Platform screen doors (PSD) are a set of barriers that divide train platforms from the train tracks. They are widely used in newer Asian and European metro systems, although they can also be found on metro systems in Australia and Latin America. In light of recent incidents where people have fallen onto the train tracks from platforms (many of which were fatal), many people have been wondering, "why aren't there PSDs?". This video explores the reasons why don't more metro systems (particularly those in North America) have PSDs.
Side note: While I'll mostly be talking about North America, the points in this video can apply to just about any metro system in the world as long as they don't have PSDs. Also I'll be using "metro system" and "rapid transit system" pretty interchangeably throughout the video.
Edit 24 September 2023: I changed the title to "Why Most North American Metro Systems Don't Have Platform Screen Doors" since the Montreal REM and Honolulu HART (if you consider Hawaii North America) are now finally open and they both have PSDs.
