She ascended the throne in 1952 and for the next ten years, Kenyans were brutalised, tortured and killed during the Mau mau uprising. India might have gotten independence before she ascended the throne but African colonies still suffered for many more years. Apartheid in South Africa also happened under her rule and she never once acknowledged and apologised for her empire's actions. Some of our heritage sits in the British as "art" pieces. Centuries worth of culture has been reduced to mere "art" in order to stroke a few egos. I also want to mention that Britain didn't leave the colonies out of the goodness of their hearts. It was getting increasingly difficult to keep the colonies in line with all the uprisings popping up all over plus this was a weakened Britain from it's initial glory. You simply can't respect someone who doesn't respect others.
@aamnahere6250

Being someone's grandmother does not automatically make a person worthy of respect. Queen Elizabeth is being mourned by her grandchildren because she was kind to them. However, she carried on the legacy of her ancestors and never once apologized or paid reparations to the nations they inflicted enormous harm to. Only 22 countries in the world were never occupied by the British empire. That should tell you the scale of their crimes. Millions of people have died in the subcontinent and Africa because of the greed and racism of the British empire. I know it doesn't impact Americans but it doesn't have to in order to be considered indefensible.

I'm South African and 65. When I was young, our country was ruled by Britain. We even used their £ and pennies, with her face on them; we used measurements like feet, yards and miles etc. Most importantly, their rule was the precursor to apartheid. I agree with Trevor, we commiserate with those who are mourning but we as a people have no reason to mourn at all. She didn't pioneer colonization but she definitely didn't stop the pillaging of our country's resources to enrich her monarchy.

@@keir100 South Africa only became fully independent politically from the British Empire on 31 May 1961. It became a "fully sovereign" nation state "within the British Empire" in 1934 which made it theoretically as "independent" as Canada or Australia at the time, yet politically, British interests ruled the show. Many of the seeds of the Apartheid system (such as hut-tax, native lands act, etc) were planted under British rule and the extractive benefits remained in British hands for decades. Claiming that the British did't support such a "pluralist" policy is ignoring that Rhodesia was ever a thing.

You correct, apartheid South Africa is a great example but as I’m sure you already know, there are many other countries that suffered and still suffering as a result of the direct influence stemming from the monarchy under her reign. But where most ppl are coming from is that the Queen, who represents the Crown, has never apologised to any of the nations that they “the British empire”have colonised and that’s a real shame and disappointment, especially being the reigning monarch. The same will apply to the present King, he won’t apologise.

I actually found it interesting that some of the strongest voices against the Queen and Monarchy actually came out of Ireland. They were making celebratory memes and singing songs like "Lady's In A Box" at football stadiums. For the people of Ireland the memory of empire is still very fresh and real. The institution she represented is still very much alive and well, perceived to be continuing with things that past generations have learned to loathe them for. I have had an Irish person tell me that Northern Ireland is actually Occupied Ireland, for example. I think a major grievance for everybody else though is that there has never been a formal acknowledgement of what the empire represented at any stage in its long history. Some even suggest that were it not for the scale of WWII's impact on the British economy, there might not have been any incentive to break up the empire. But that is a debate for another day I guess, and one for smarter people than me.

Not sure why everyone keeps saying that Queen Elizabeth the ll had no power. The Queen of England had huge global influence. She was the head of state for Britain and 56 commonwealth countries. The dictionary definition of "influence" is " the power of producing an effect, especially the unobtrusive effect of power exerted." No one would expect a monarch to go out and personally subjugate other human beings, however, these acts were being carried out in her name and 2. She accepted a throne which for at least 300 years had engaged in chattel slavery, colonization and genocide and constantly celebrates the fact that it benefited greatly from those activities. By accepting the role of monarch and the throne and all that it represents, she basically said to the world that she accepts everything that was done. (She could have abdicated) But by doing nothing to right the wrongs throughout a 70 year reign also tells the world that you agree with what was done but have no culpability. In fact, your role actively perpetuates and promotes the inequalities, the prejudice and the criminal injustices. Easy to see why some people would have a problem with that.

Doesn’t matter what she personally was involved with it’s what she represents if an individual police officer kills someone unlawfully then you can’t say hey don’t be angry with police be angry at that individual officer no it’s an institution an individual police officer represents an institution especially the person at the top of that institution.did the queen make a personal speech about slavery and the lives lost by the crown in the past no she didn’t where was her humanity, to not mourn the death of someone you didn’t personally know is not evil that’s being sane as far as I’m concerned i have no respect for the queen or the crown and don’t care about the royal family, hate maybe over the top going to far but the crown did damage to my family in the past and the queen represents that her crown has jewel’s in it that where stolen from other countries during the colonial past so to excuse the queen from all that wrong doing is kind of ignorant in my opinion she wore the crown she proudly represented something that destroyed entire societies around the world that still have not recovered.

Elizabeth became queen in 1952; the killings of millions of Kenyans, all torture, rape, destruction and looting by the British happened between 1953 - 1956! She was queen and she’d be lying to claim no knowledge of what her subjects are up to. She ought to have known that diamonds on her throne were stolen with one worth 460m USD stolen from my homeland of South Africa, where millions more plus gold amongst other resources continue to be taken to this day! They have the largest gold reserve yet they have no gold mines! That gold comes from South Africa, Zimbabwe and some west African countries such a Ghana (they called it the Gold Coast)!!! She really can’t claim to be that ignorant! She’s just as cruel because she didn’t act, neither did she ever speak out!!! Just like France is doing with its former colonies who are supposedly independent, the British continue to loot. France (to elaborate)…they ‘gave’ those countries their independence however, those countries may not have a reserve bank of their own. They bank their GDP with France, they’re then entitled to only 15% of this money when they need it, charged at interest as if it’s a loan!!! They placed their military in these countries to intimidate whoever speaks out!!! The people the British killed in Kenya, didn’t get any sympathy from the British so why should Kenyans show sympathy to the passing of ONE (not millions) woman just because she’s a grandmother!! Those were our grandparents too!!!

@Bongolala909 Год назад
never said you picked a side. I do appreciate that you try to see all sides, but this is why it comes off as apologist. 1. at around 7:30 at the beginning of the commentary, you place some emphasis on the fact that India gained independence in 1947,before the queen was in power. 2. at around 11:30 you emphasize that in your opinion, the crown isn't even politically powerful. 3. At around 11:45 onwards, you reiterate that people should have some reverence and/or respect even if they don't have to mourn. 4. at another point you say that death is always sad, unless the person was completely evil. but from what you've seen of the queen, she was a positive person. If you look at those statements from Trevor's perspective, someone who well remembers apartheid, or from the perspective of millions of people around the world who've seen the impact of British rule on their parents, their communities, and their cultures. do you see how your words may come off as apologist? For example, point 1 above conveniently avoids the fact that India was not the only British colony, that Trevor is not indian, but south African, a country that was under the queen's rule for over 4 decades. then, point 2 above becomes an even greater justification, "the queen had no power so don't be mad at her!" kind of thing. these reinforce point 3, making it valid, but only from your perspective. millions of others hold a different and more negative experience of the crown rule that she exercised. And then point 4 is actually the one I have the biggest problem with. you draw a line, that there are people who are so evil that their passing would actually be a benefit. but then you completely dismiss the very real lived experiences of millions who were ruled over by the British, just because your perspective of the queen doesn't match theirs. and then because you have no knowledge of what British rule actually was like, you suggest that we, who do have that unfortunate experience, should have reverence and respect. I normally love your reactions and thoughts on stuff, but this was not it fam.

Nick its is very sensitive and complicated. You will not get to the bottom of it if you were to try. The Queen was the image and symbol of an authority that goes several centuries back and that symbolism is still very much alive in the minds of everyone that had or still has something to do with Britain. Am Nigerian🇳🇬; the Queen gave my country Independence but I feel all that happened with Princess Diana was rather unfortunate. Somewhere in the back of my mind I feel the demise of Diana was ochestrated to protect the crown. Many people in my country and the world at large were very affectionate towards the late Princess Diana. I feel sober that the queen has passed on and am to some extent feeling her loss but I also have this mixed feeling that a lot of sad things happened to protect her interest. May she Rest in Peace nonetheless. 🙏

Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952. Many of the allegations and propaganda against her was for a system of government that effectively came to an end post WWII. Not that the Queen actually had anything to do with government anyway, we're a constitutional monarchy which means all the power (with some notable exceptions upon government dissolution or disarray) is in the hands of an elected government... There is a lot of residual distain for the UK when really we had little to do with it. Apartheid in South Africa has often been blamed on the British, when in reality it was local politics and the architect was Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd - a South African politician, a scholar of applied psychology and sociology, and chief editor of Die Transvaler newspaper. The UK was blamed for the rise of Idi Amin (the Butcher of Uganda) but Uganda gained independence in 1962, and having learned that Obote was planning to arrest him for misappropriating army funds, Amin seized power in a military coup on 25 January 1971, while Obote was attending a Commonwealth summit meeting in Singapore. India goes on about how Britain stole $45 trillion in trade from 1765 to 1938 but no one bothers to actually explain how India actually created that much wealth to be "stolen" or how much more it had because it obviously it wasn't squoze dry? We're talking almost three centuries ago and they believe one country created $45 trillion over and above it's own needs to survive in trade alone? Where from, how, using what - tea stolen from China creating the Indian tea industry? Cotton/Textiles stolen from the USA creating the Indian textile industry? Technology from Britain to be able to produce volume to make sales in trade, and infrastructure to move product to create trade... None of that matters... Even if we believe the hugely inflated trade figures they quote...

First of all she may not have directly caused all the atrocities that the British empire has done but things to consider are: Was she actively fighting against it or trying to fix the damage that the British empire has caused countless of countries? Not to mention the damage done in loss of wealth or lives but also in things like culture, heritage or languages. Did she ever acknowledge, apologize or take responsibility for the crimes? Was she still actively representing the organization that had done said crimes? Also if you think about who benefitted most from said crimes and stolen wealth it would have been her. Very concrete examples of the stolen wealth are the crown jewels but did she return them? Or do anything to try to return the thousands upon thousands of stolen artifacts from all over the world that now sit in British museums and that the British are still very tangibly benefitting from.... Answering those things makes it quite easy to realize why people have even hatred towards her.

Not even gonna go into more details, further information ect... and her legacy as Queen. Slavery was not enough on us as africans, slave trade was not enough, concentration camps were not enough but approved a new oppressive regime. Remember that there is so much they never teach on purpose.

Nick, I'm from the U.K. and even though I was born and raised in England and have never visited Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland for me to hear you keep referring to her as " The Queen of England " is very annoying. This seems to me like a very common thing amongst far too many of you Americans, doesn't it? She was the Queen of the U.K. and now her son, Charles, is King of the U.K. but unfortunately far too many Americans tend to either overlook or ignore the other constituent countries of the U.K., don't they? The full title of my country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, where Great Britain is comprised of England, Scotland and Wales - it doesn't mean that Britain is great or superior in the way that most non-British people would think of it as being, it just means that it's the largest geographical land mass that makes up this country. On a similar subject most people from the U.K. have heard it out of the mouths of a lot of Americans that when we tell them that we're either from the U.K. or that we consider ourselves to be British their immediate go-to is to refer to us as being English rather than to ask us which of the four constituent countries of the U.K. we're from. While there are a lot of people over here that don't mind you referring to us as being British to simplify things there are also a lot of people who take offence from you calling them English - most notably those people who consider themselves to be either Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish. Personally speaking I'm in agreement with both yourself, Jodi and Trevor Noah when it comes to H.M. The Queen's death in that while most of us from over here did mourn her passing we've now gotten over it and are looking forward to the future rather than dwelling on the past. That being said, just because she was buried 5 days ago doesn't mean that we can't remember her with affection for the good things that she did over the past 70 years or so, does it? It was her physical body that was buried and not the memories that any of us have of her that were interred with her last Monday, wasn't it? I wholeheartedly agree with Trevor and yourselves when you were talking about celebrities and them dying and the way that far too many people tend to continuously mourn them. It's not that any of us are any different when it comes to death, is it? While this might sound a bit callous of me to say this there are two inevitable things that happen to all of us irrespective of who we are, where we're from or how famous we happen to be and those two things are being born and dying and it's just up to all of us to make the most of the mess that exists between those two inevitable events, isn't it?

@Phil_A_O_Fish Год назад
You're forgiven, @@BoringReviews, to be honest with you the reason that I give for my original comment is to help you to understand not so much our history as our geography. History is changeable whereas geography really isn't, is it? It's much better that you get your information from an ordinary Brit like myself than it is to continue believing what you've heard or come to understand from your own fellow country men and women over the years, isn't it? On the upside for you all at Boring Reviews you'll now be able to pass that information onto your fellow Americans, won't you? This will mean that those same people will now consider you to be informed on this subject and they're more likely to get their information from you, aren't they? On the topic of history all of you would do well to watch, listen and react to Al Murray and his alter ego of The Pub Landlord. A word of warning though he uses a lot of expletives in his stand-up routines so you might want to have earplugs standing by if you get offended by foul language. Everything that he says about history is 100% accurate because he has a Masters degree in Modern History as well as an Honorary PhD in Social Science. Good luck with your channel. 👍😁👍

you guys should stop talking if you know nothing about anything. The queen ruled for 70years she was there when all the killings were going in other countries. She was the was giving orders so why you sitting up here acting like people should just forget about that and empatize with what the british are going through just because they are popular? Did she apologize to the grandmother and grandfather of other people they killed base on their colonizaton. She was still in power when colonization was going on and she was the one with the ultimate power but did she stop it ? So stop this nonsense, of trying to make other people look bad because they don't have any glowing view about her. Will you have a glowing view about someone who killed your grandfather? You guys need to learn to respect people's feeling and not try to impose your view on others when you know nothing or have no type of experience whatsover. I bet if they had colonize any european country you would not here telling people to show respect.

Queen symbolizes the United Kingdom". Yes, she hasn't been in charge before 1953. Yes, King or Queen has just a formal position and Prime Minister has real executive power. But, it's understandable why some people from certain countries have different feelings about her. Like Islam. It's in charge in Iran, for example. Lots of young people from Iran hate Mohamad, Ali, and so on because of it. Why? Did Mohamad do anything to Iran? (Could he even show Iran on the map?) Of course, not. But Mohamad symbolizes Islam. We might disagree with this notion, but we can understand it. She reminds me of my own late Mom whom I do love forever. But, who said that everybody else has to love my late Mom?

The Queen was the best and always kept out of politics. Most of the royals are ok and it's thanks to the Prince's Trust that I am where I am and not on the streets or dead. Yeah the British Empire did some bad stuff but also did a lot of good. I'm proud to be English but British also. I love my country and our history. All of it. It was the British who were the first to abolish slavery. The British lost 2,000 souls at sea fighting the slave trade. The British paid $17 billion in today's money (which was only paid off less than 10 years ago) to free slaves. And who sold the slaves to Europeans? Africans. Europeans never even needed to step foot in Africa as the African sellers would leave them on the beaches to be collected. And we also put a stop to widow burning in India. But it seems a lot of people revel in playing the victim nowadays and blame all their ills on the British Empire, that way they don't have to face the fact that their own situation is down to themselves and nothing else. Either that or they're just jealous they weren't born in this green and pleasant land. The Queen has nothing to apologise for, all she did was good, and I'm truly thankful I lived under her reign. God bless the Queen, and God save the King.

Give us a break, colonisation was about stripping people of their culture, language, beliefs. Degrading them and demeaning their way of living. Taking their land, their cattle, their natural resources. The crown of your Queen had diamonds, do you know where they got them from? It's good to be proud of where you come from but please don't try to whitewash the negative impact of the British Empire. The millions who died trying to free themselves from it. The millions who were told thet were inferior and deserved menial jobs and not jobs in offices, wearing nice clothes. Millions who were forced to live in poverty stricken townships while the white settlers lived in fancy surburbs and barred any natives from buying or renting houses there. I get that you don't understand how much it impacted the lives of our grandparents and parents...even to this day we are still trying to get rid of the meddling of former colonizers in our affairs. Are they to blame for everything wrong in our countries, no of course not that's absurd. But they did make some crazy decisions which still impact some of their former colonies to this day
