I suspect more Vietnamese born US citizens will make a similar choice as it's becoming very difficult for most retirees to afford even the basics of life [here in the US]. It would be nice if VN implemented a retirement visa program like Thailand has as it would bring in some foreign investment which is always nice. While one's life could be a bit shorter in VN than the US due to the limitations of the VN healthcare system _“It does not matter how long you live, but how well you do it."_ In VN the quality of daily life is simply better than in the US. Nothing beats walking out of your home in the morning and having a bowl of soup made by one of your neighbors followed by a glass of coffee made by another while playing a game of cờ tướng.

Brian : Much more importantly , in Vietnam , the aged are still respected , while in the US , they are respected less than women , children and then dogs ! Donald Trump is respected for his billion-dollar wealth , but I’ve never heard that he’s respected because of his 70-plus age ! Americans even donate more to young beggars than old ones !
@brian-beeler
@brian-beeler 4 года назад
@@phamducmau Completely agree, One of the many things I enjoyed about living in Viet Nam was the respect given to those older than you. When you said "anh" and "chi" you were reminded of your place in the world. I wish this was a lesson Americans would learn. When I taught English in Viet Nam I told my students that for many years Viet Nam was a student to the world but now it was their job to be a teacher to the world. You come from my favorite place I've ever been. =)

Brian Beeler : Americans don’t have the longest lifetimes in the world ! That honor should go to the Japanese , then residents of several Northern European countries ! The average lifetimes of American have been continuously drawn down by addition to drugs (both the illegal and the legal type). It should be realized that Donald Trump is healthy at the same age as me , because he never consumes alcohol (he has dabled in more women than known of any other American Presidents , on the other hand !). The lifespans of many Vietnamese have been severely reduced by tobacco and alcohol (including those of nearly all my cousins , either still living in Vietnam , or have immigrated to the USA !). The lifespans of Vietnamese who avoids tobacco and alcohol can greatly those of average Americans ! My father lived to 96 (he abstained from tobacco and alcohol when becoming an at-home Buddhist monk , tu tại gia , at age 70 , while living in Virginia ). My father-in-law in still healthy at 97 . He eats healthy while living in my house (but when he travels to Vietnam or Texas , his relatives pile delicious but unhealthy food on him to show their respects ). My mother’s elder sister lived to 102 in San Diego , California ! My father’s sister has reached 97 years old living in Vietnam , and visiting relatives in California almost every year ! (She used to work at a pharmacy in Đà-Lạt. She’s never smoked tobacco nor drunk alcohol !
@brian-beeler
@brian-beeler 4 года назад
@@phamducmau I completely agree with what you said. My thought on life span in comparing VN and the US was about the treatment of serious illnesses like cancer and not average life expectancy hence the use of "could" and not "will." Tobacco use is a serious problem in VN due to its low price. I think a price increase and encouraging tobacco users to switch to vaping would help a lot. Recent studies have shown that there's no safe level of alcohol use so abstaining from it will help one live a longer and healthier life. As your father's wisdom showed meditation and following the path of Thích Ca Mâu Ni Phật và Quán Thế Âm Bồ tát (Ông theo Phật giao là Phổ Minh. Ông xin lỗi. Ông không biết nói tiếng Việt giỏi lắm.) can lead to a longer and happier life. Your father sounds like he was both good and wise. BTW Đà-Lạt rất đẹp. =) Thank you for your reply.

I hate hearing about all these vloger from America saying how bad life is in Vn and all these vietnamese wanting to get out of vn to go to America, they look pretty happy to me!! If you wish to go to America feel free to but its not heaven like everyone thinks! Not everyone gets rich and become successful,Life in vn is less stressfull, vn have everything that you need and want, from internationsl schools ,international hospitals, internatinal food, vn have the best to offer, I've been a US Citizen for over 30 yrs, been living in VN for last 18 yrs, believe it or not you have more freedom over here, you can be successful in any country if you have the will and desires to succeed.

Meh. Vietnam has international schools, international food, etcetera. But you need cold hard cash to pay for it. And the money is not easy to come by for people who don't have opportunities. That's why all those Vietnamese got smuggled into London and died in that truck. They had no way to avail themselves of the resources in Vietnam. If you have money--sure--many things are available. But that is also the case in Paris, London and Los Angeles.

I have been dreaming of retiring in Vietnam and made more than a dozen trips back there for the last 25 years but could not make me stay there for more than 3 months.. Just like Ky Le ,I was educated and lived in the state more than 2/3 of my life so i have no problems of adapting living in US . My problem of living in Vietnam by myself w/o relatives or friends from the state made me feel boring and lonely.. But the most my enjoyment in Vn is plentiful breakfast and morning exercise together with many locals . At night we can go to cafe to listen music and got some coffee to enjoy the bar atmosphere . To me retiring in Vn is ok but not permanently until i can not make trip back home..!!!
