Why Naboo ships were SO different

I never thought the N1 felt out of place. Most species have their own designs in SW.

Naboo shipbuilding was basically Rolls-Royce: somewhat niche, mostly handcrafted while incorporating some factory-made parts underneath an aestheticly pleasant chassis, and closely associated with the top of the social hierarchy (i.e. royalty). Oh, and let's not forget that they have always been capable of manufacturing high-quality war materials (Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, anyone?).

I will forever lament the lack of new starship designs in the Sequels.

In the Darth Plagueis novel, Darth Plagueis himself says that at the time of the Republic when he was alive, starfighters had ceremonial functions rather than combat, unlike the starfighters of the old Republic, which were more similar to X-wings or TIE Fighters from the era of galactic civil war.

No mention of Lucas’ love for classic 50’s cars? Chrome finish, elegant artistic design, precision-built, etc. George was just digging into his past & interests as always. Similar reasons we have podracing (hot rodding … American Graffiti)

This is what I liked about the Prequels was the unique planetary ship designs like the Naboo starfighters or Geonosian starfighters etc.

The reason why i feel the ships look somewhat out of place in the star wars universe is because they acually look futuristic whilst most other ships look like they are from the cold war

Padme's gigantic silvery ship always reminded me of a Whale, and in that opening scene of Clone Wars, it was a Whale being escorted by two Sea Scorpions. Loved it.

As a kid I was fascinated with the Naboo Police Cruiser, an atmosphere - only ship from the Battle for Naboo game, that came out with Episode I. It was a miniature N-1, with limited capabilities, blue, with cromium finish, in essence an armed police "chopper", since it had no room for transporting suspects. Liked it a lot in its missions in the game.

N1 Starfighter (TO ME) is as iconic as the X-Wing. Such a beautiful and just „realistic“ looking design. Simply beautiful.

What makes them so different is design direction by Doug chaing and the art department iterating hundreds of designs to land on one that feels true to Star Wars, but also fits the feeling of Naboo, and while still beinng something new. The vehicles in the phantom menace are soooo under rated in my opinion. The lucrehulk space station is a really cool design, the MTT, AAT, all of it was extremely well designed imo

I always loved the looks of these ships! A nice contrast to the usual angular designs. They feel like classic planes here on Earth, and feel more organic, which makes sense for a planet that focuses on their environment and nature

I love the Naboo designs, they straddle the line of being possible and impossible, like you said that they have a striking resemblance to the SR-71 specifically along with having the engine layouts making them appear like some real world aircraft. They're really cool, and I wish we saw more Naboo ship classes.

Very high procurement budget per fighter. Personal shield, personal droid, personal FTL, personal torpedo launchers(x2). Probably leather interior too. Meanwhile TIE Fighter looks like a scooped out droid with expendable pilot crammed in.

The N1 is among my favorite starships in the whole franchise. I was absolutely fanboying when they brought one onto the Mandalorian.

i really liked the beginning of EP2., it made the World feel more real! If you think about it, in most other shows the Starship comes out roughly above the equator of the Planet with the "northpol" up and IF they land, there is seldom an overcast, and the Skyscrapers sticking out of the Cloudlayer looks cool and gives you a sense of heigt of these buildings. And while the Gatekeepers try to make everything new seem bad: the Ship Design of the Prequells have a certain "interwar" and early 50s vibe to it, while the OT have the contemporary 70/80s look and ye, while it seems a bit dull there aren't much fancyer Designs in the Sequels ... well the F-18 Design is also around since the Time of the OT

note: the SR71 had also a R2D2 Unit, to navigate with the stars

Something really interesting about the episode 3 skiff is that it actually has weapons. They aren't used at all but the fact they are there is a pretty big departure from Naboo design philosophy. But considering that it was built during the clone wars (one is seen in a clone wars episode), whoever designed it probably realized that Naboo philosophy needed to change a little so that in a galaxy at war, the queen could have at least a little protection.

The sheer sleekness of the N-1 reminds me of Howard Hughes designs.

The Naboo ships were the Duesenbergs of Star Wars interstellar travel IMO. Duesenberg also had a Model J (luxury automobile), although I imagine this was most likely coincidence.

What jumps out to me with these vessels as inspirations are art deco design and supermarine racing planes from the interwar period

I would love a ucs lego series of any of the naboo ships I also find them very appealing and unique compared to other ship designs I believe it would make a true centerpiece of beauty

These Naboo fighters are just the most sleek awesome ship design ever and also the first space battle I ever seen was Anakin taking his first flight too so I feel a real strong connection to these ships.

I hate the yellow but the Mandalorian sleek silver chrome? Chef's kiss.

It's also worth noting that many Naboo weapons and vehicles were made by the Sullust-based SoroSuub Corporation, including the ELG-3A blaster pistol (Padme's sidearm), the Flash and Gian military speeders and the S-130 Shelter speeder. The Sullustans seem to share a similar taste in aesthetics as the Naboo, with SoroSuub producing many elegant designs throughout its history.

Funnily enough, the N1 is the most aerodynamic starfighter in atmosphere. I've seen aerodynamics tests, and they were the most stable starship.

My gripe with the Mando scene os that the set designers clearly never visited an auto-shop. We need lights EVRYWHERE so we can see what we are doing in those dark places. Sigh.

I’ve always wanted to see a larger possibly capital ship class Naboo or Nubian ship, all their products just feel handcrafted.

6:17 I still say this fighter is a complete mismatch for Dinn, it would be ok if he also had some other craft that the fighter could dock on/in but as a bounty hunter a fighter severely limits the type of jobs you can take, no cargo movement, no prisoners you know the largest number of jobs available to a bounty hunter as most jobs want targets brought in warm I mean it’s not like you can just strap a prisoner to the outside of your fighter (though it would be funny if they had an outtake/deleted scenes of Dinn strapping a guy to the nose of the fighter and landing with the bounty at the location “”oh….. well he was alive when I took off! That has to count for something?””

The fact that Nubia exists and isn't just rolled into Naboo, thus making us have to call Nabooians that monstrosity of a word REALLY irks me. The two planets are basically clones of each other.

The N-1 supplanted the X-Wing as my favorite fighter. It's just perfectly designed.

The J-type 327 looks like it had holes for laser cannons in the photo you showed before the SR-71 It's also one of my favorite ships

The N1 Starfighter would have been a perfect Jedi Starfighter in the pre clone wars period. Even the philosophy behind it would have suited the Jedi. They would have just painted it red instead of using Chrome. It ticks all the boxes in terms of capabilities, and having a inbuilt hyperdrive instead of needing a hyperspace ring is far more useful, and removes a severe vulnerability when doing remote investigations and missions to potentially hostile territory. While not as manoeuvrable as the Delta 7, it still was capable and had stronger shields and weapons. If needed, the _N1-J_ could have had instruments stripped out to save weight for a Jedi pilot. It would be a ideal craft for Sentinels style missions. But then the Jedi Order should really have used a bunch of highly modified Corellian Light Freighters... when suitably upgraded they are apparently the most powerful ships in the Star Wars universe...

I love how the royal skiffs and yacht have that ample, wide, gliding elegance that fits, say, the long trailing dress of a monarch

The footage from the old Starfighter game gave me a serious nostalgia trip. I've played that so many times.

With so much of the planet being water, I wonder if the ships shared designs from pre-space flight ships and subs.

Just noticed that the Nabooian's large Starship looks similar to the real-life German Ho-229 and B-2 Spirit Bomber. While the medium starship looks more like an artistical Me-262 German Jet fighter due to the engines being lower to the fuselage.

Man, seeing those super stylish atmosphere entry shots really makes me want to go and do another rewatch of the prequels!

Naboo starship maintenance crews must be some of the highest paid people in the galaxy. Imagine having to polish those things all the time

I've always suspected that the manufacturer for the J-Type from Phantom Menace was specifically picked by Uncle George to make a Star Wars -specific answer to the question "What's a Nubian?" from Kevin Smith's film Chasing Amy.

Me: Casually draws a 100m Nubian Super bomber with a 1000 proton bomb payload and Interceptor level speeds because the Sequels MG100 bomber dosent make sense Also me : Draws a Mainline(not frontline) new republic capital ship based on mc75 but more efficient (militarised design) and end up with a ship both as powerful as a 1\4 of a ISD and A Venator combined

The point not touched on is the Naboos Ships sound. There is a running thread between atleast the large ships. They sound like large, multi radial engine powered aircraft. Radials have a distinctive sound, so Amadalas ships always sounded like DC-3s or B-17s to me

I think the bigger Naboo ships were all 1 of 1 because in book of boba it was mentioned the n1 was hand built insinuating the other ships were as well and every time you see one it seems to be a different ship.

Naboo is just build different. Love the design of the N-1. And also the Naboo Bomber from Battle of Naboo. I wish Naboo ships, and not just the N-1s, were in more Star Wars media. They are just so cool.

Fun fact, the Blackbird had a bomber variant. Two were made and used but due to costs they were canceled for further production. They also made one the had a drone that would launch off the top lol. The SR-71 family was very interesting and an amazing piece of aviation history.

One thing the Prequels really amaze me are their ships. TPM: N1, Padme chrome ship, Republic Consular Ship, TF landers, Darth Maul's ship. Now I play Starfield to try to replicate the experience of flying one of those ships.

I had an idea for my own Star Wars OC where his father came from Naboo and his mother came from Alderaan. In the battle of Coruscant he would steal his father’s N-1 just as Anakin did years earlier and would join the fight alongside the clones. Eventually he would make it onto the Invisible Hand and brush shoulders with Anakin and Obi-Wan as they fought Dooku and Grievous before being apprehended by an IG-100 Magnaguard. Then the entire invisible hand would start to come apart and him and the Magnaguard he had been fighting off up until that point would have to join forces to get off the crumbling ship so they would make it back to the hangar and fly back home where he would be in a world of hurt for his dangerous stunt. In that time he would make friends with his droid companion and come to realize that the Republic is rapidly becoming an autocratic police state. This would create a divide between his mother and his father. As the Empire formed his father would become a staunch loyalist while his mother would lament the old republic and desire more democratic reforms. He would go from spoiled rich kid to smuggler and scoundrel, doing whatever oftentimes illegal smuggling activities for local Hutts and criminal gangs to make a quick buck which he would almost always invest into his ship, now a heavily modified Gazonti class cruiser. He would also come across a valuable business partner, a Trendotian bounty hunter who would become one of his crew. He would also find a young Twi’lek girl whom he freed from slavery and together they would join the rebel alliance to fight for the Republic they all long to return.

I always thought Naboo had a kind of 'Roman' aesthetic, and their spaceship designs look to me exactly like what the Romans would produce if they had the technology.

N1 Starfighter is always a favorite of mine. The ship is so much form follows function but also a work of art. Small, fast, agile, with a decent amount of weapons on **centerline**.

I always loved the yellow fighters. Very stylish. I remember a GameCube game though we’re then being so fragile was so frustrating

When I think of slick spaceships I still get the Naboo royal cruisers in mind.

I love the N1, it might even be by favourite Star fighter in all of Star wars. It reminds me of the Spitfire. It's a simple, yet beautiful little interceptor that will absolutely tear you up if you get on the wrong side of it. Little side note there, the Spitfire started out as a floatplane believe it or not.... And the N1 has a boat shaped hull. Nothing in that in sure, just a little observation that occurred to me.

The Mandalorians N1 beefed up was pretty cool 😊

The Star Wars Starfighter PS2 Game made me appreciate the N1. It was my favorite of the 3 player ships in that game.

I haven't read the Darth Plagueis book, but I've read Queen's Peril/Queen's Shadow/Queen's Hope about Padme from pre-Episode 1 to pre-Episode 3, and there's a lot of talk about Naboo being a very artsy planet that cares about not only its own environment but that of other worlds. Makes sense that their ships would be so environmentally friendly and aesthetic.

When I saw Episode 1 for the first time, I instantly fell in love with the N1. And I still consider it amongst my top favorite starfighters in regards to design alone. But yeah, Nubian ships just hit differently for me in comparison to the obvious classic fan favorites. Their sleekness, those curves, those engines, the addition of chromium as a means for symbolism of royal affiliation. Hell, even the N-X (Naboo Police Cruiser variant seen in the Ep.1 Battle for Naboo game) was a delight, even if it was painted blue. Even the Bomber variant (NB-1) from the same game was oddly visually appealing.

The N1 is my number one favorite Starship in all of Star Wars. Hell even in other sci-fi fictions as well.

The N-1 Starfighter is as pleasing to look at, as it is deadly. They're the equivalent of a Koenigsegg in Star Wars.

If I had to pick one thing that I thought the prequels did exceptionally well, it'd be the general vehicle and droid designs. They're all sufficiently different from the OT to convey that this is a different time period with different technology and factions, but they don't feel out of place in the universe, plus they did a really good job showing how all of this technology transitioned into the technology seen in the OT. The N1 starfighter in particular was always a great example to me of the prequel's interesting design philosophy. Comparing the N1 to an X-wing feels like comparing a '60's Sting Ray sports car to an '80's Delorian and it just feels right to me as a natural progression in terms of design aesthetics. The fact that the Disney sequels didn't bother doing something like this in order to keep them feeling familiar is a big part of why they feel so soulless to me.

The richness and diversity of the ships and such in the prequel/clone wars era vs what we see in the OT really conveys a sense of having lost culture under the Empire. its really cool

To me the Naboo Ships from the Republic are kinda like luxyury cars, The N-1. The N-1 Naboo Police Cruiser very underrated from Star Wars Battle for Naboo the Game and of course the J-327 looks a lot like a flying limousine. By the way love the new intro you put in the videos.
