Why Naruto Battles Never Lost Their Strategy (Even In The War Arc)

People claim that in Naruto Shippuden, especially in the War Arc, that Naruto battles lost their strategy. In fact this never happened, the Naruto battles remained highly strategical even though the power levels escalated. Madara vs 5 Kage, Guy vs Madara, Juubito vs Naruto, Sasuke, Minato, and Tobirama, Obito vs Kakashi, Naruto, Killer Bee, and Might Guy, Madara vs Hashirama among many other battles were highly strategical during the War Arc.
In this video we will analyze these battles and prove that they had a lot of strategy involved in them. Also, we will show that not every battle in Naruto part 1 had a ton of strategy either. Take Rock Lee vs Gaara for instance, that fight wasn't the peak of battle strategy by any means.

One of the most underrated High IQ moments that I love that not many people bring up is the Naruto vs Pain fight.....I LOVE the moment where Naruto is held by the chakra-absorbing Path, and Naruto uses that moment to simply hold still to absorb Nature Chakra, allow it to absorb that, and make it petrify! Absolutely outstanding! And then him using his Clones at the end to bolster himself against the Almighty Push??? AWESOME.

While I agree that naruto didn't lose anything in terms of strategy, I think that what people really like is the fact that ninjas could do a lot using very little. And when they used an op ability, it usually came with some king of repercussion. Late series has none of this.

Boruto takes this to a whole other level. At least in Shippuden there was always the thought that something could be done to counter the overpowered characters. In Boruto you have characters who’s abilities can’t be countered simply because the single ability or set of abilities accessible to no more than one or two characters that will counter them hasn’t been written yet. This only happens in Shippuden once 10 tails Madara appears. This was a great take though and my exact thoughts as well. There are plenty of other series that have crazy jumps power scaling in a similar way Naruto does that don’t get any flack for it. The ideas built in part one were really cool and I liked the idea of weaker characters winning from time to time. It pushed the idea that you could turn your weaknesses to strengths in a battle which fit the themes so much better in my opinion.

Yup, also blasting beams and shit like dragon ball does not look cool. Also the way the fights in the war arc were choreographed seemed like they lost this sense of foreboding that they had in the chunin arc. or Zabuza arc. The stakes are very poorly handled in Shippuden. So we're left disillusioned about the fight scenes that we got. Also, OG naruto is supposed to be much light hearted while Shippuden is supposed to be the mature version of it, so people had their expectations high on the fights having more thought put into it.

@@itachi60001 how do the tides of most of the fights actually end up shifting? It's not strategy it's usually one of the demi gods or other assorted hax being activated. For example the haku fight. If it wasn't for the fact Naruto has a demi god inside him they'd have all died. The fight on the bridge with 4 tails and orochimaru, orochimaru is getting absolutely bodied and non of his strategy and tactics do shit. The pain fight, Naruto did basic strategy to take out a path of pain but how does that fight end again? Did you say the same demi god that gets every fight won pulled up? Cause that's what happens. Sasuke fights pretend to be tactical but they aren't. Sasuke just spams the chidiri and amatarasu until the enemy stops moving. Dadera is so nice he even blows up for him. To reiterate: fights in Naruto generally just pretend to be tactical and strategy based but in reality they are just less obvious dragon ball fights.

The problem I have with Obito's and Shinobi alliance's “strategy” is that there are too much unnecessary actions. For example, Tobi's declaration of war was very ambiguous. Instead of fighting in large open battlefields like a complete noob, what if he had simply started a guerrilla warfare against the villages? Gone after civilians to anger the Kages and Shinobi? Convinced smaller villages like Otokagure to join his cause? Laid siege to weaker villages? Attacked infrastructure? Infiltration of military command (espionage and sabotage)? Asymmetric warfare? Real ninja shit?

@@haikazumadesu36 One who wants to wipe them out in one swell swoop… because a war as ugly as it is serves a purpose for a result that you can reap the benefits from. Like colonizing, resources, political conflict, beef between nations. A common threat. Obito’s goal was the moon eye plan, in order to do that he needed the last 2 Jinchuriki, the 5 nations had a summit to determine what to do about the Akatsuki and what to do with Naruto since they were under the impression that Bee has already been captured. They argue what to do with the last remaining one, whether to hide him, kill him, seal him away etc. Then Sasuke and Obito crash the party. To make things simple he simply says, give him to me 🤷‍♂️ I only want what’s best. Every nation other than Konoha has lost their Jinchuriki. So he simply asks, and they refuse. They also needed Bee because they need to be sealed in proper order. That’s when Taikage calmed down and was like oh shit my brothers alive!!! Grrrr!?!? So in order to bring them out he declares a “war” to force them to put the 2 in hiding and to gather all their battle Ready forces in a single spot. So either 1 of 2 things will happen A. They can kidnap an unguarded Bee and Naruto Or B. Drag them out into the fight and capture them there. They already know they can win 🤷‍♂️ so either way doesn’t matter. Obito will get what he wants, which he does… and he completes the mission… which happens 🤷‍♂️ They won, just a change of heart and 2 surprise twists and a last minute villain came into play.

It's just a lack of inherent cohesion that alienates fans though. You can say there is strategy, but it doesn't always make sense. When Sasuke is given an all-powerful ninjutsu like Amaterasu but then simply doesn't use it or it is no longer as powerful for no good reason, all strategy goes out the window. It's really engaging to see how Shikamaru gets out of tough spots using his very limited but potentially powerful techniques because he has to work well with what he has. When you introduce ridiculously obliterating jutsus or some of the space-time ones, it just gets kind of silly that there even is room for strategy sometimes. Amaterasu should insta delete most things for example, even if you come up with reasons for it no to work on specific targets etc.

The reason why it felt like no strategy was in the war arc is because raw power overcomes strategy, quickly devaluing it. That's why we don't remember all these strategies. Shikamaru vs Hidan strategy was well remembered because there is value behind the strategy, it worked. The 5 kages trying to seal Madara, executing it flawlessly, only to not work just because it's Madara and well nope, the strategy easily gets devalued and no one remembers it because it didn't matter in the grand scheme of things. While I see your point in there still being strategy in the war arc, the fact that they don't matter anymore in face of overwhelming power is probably why most people can't remember them and felt like there isn't any more strategies.

That argument falls apart when you realize 3 things. 1. Minato was shown sealing the Kyubi (effectively defeating it) chapter 1. This makes him more powerful than the Kyubi, at least in one aspect. 2. In Hokage battle royale the Kage use very strong techniques that can compare in scaling to Gamabunta and Shukaku attacks. Hiruzen is also the one to seal Orochimaru, rather than his summoning 3. Tsunade no diffs Manda, showing that the summoners are typically stronger than what they summon. In other words, it was never sensical to assume that the strongest beings in the show would be summonings or tailed beasts when we had seen humans defeat them or seal them. Humans were always at the top of the food chain in Naruto.

I don't think most people felt the series lost its strategic element, quite the opposite, what drives people mad is the powercreep, it reached the point that visually Naruto turned into DBZ with all those explosions. Back then Kaiju type events like the ninetails destroying the village where treated with the respect akin to a natural disaster, a huge catastrophe that took the lives of thousands included the 4th Hokage(considered the strongest back then) but in the war arc Madara can just blink and spam dozens of huge susanoo clones like it's nothing, that's the type of shit people can't stand about late shippuden, not the lack of strategy.

@Mango Makaveli It also is a good example of visual storytelling. You can show that fight to anyone who has no frame of reference about Naruto and they'd get the context of Obito and Kakashi; two friends/ rivals now enemies. Also, the music choice was fantastic for that fight, alongside some slick editing.
@Meekmillan
@Meekmillan Год назад
Explained: Obito not only matched Kakashis legendary fighting style perfectly but he led Kakashi to an emotional conflict by letting him pierce his chest with a lightning blade just like Rin. This was primarily intended destroy the curse tag in his heart so Obito could have complete freewill and become the Juubi Jinchuriki. It was also supposed to have the secondary affect of throwing Kakashi off emotionally and affecting his moral, breaking Kakashi and justifying Obito even more so in his belief that this world is only pain, suffering and futility. Allowing Obito to defeat him once and for all, not just in combat but in ideology too. Considering Kakashi was his last link to his old self (excluding Naruto). This would let Obito complete his plan with less immediate guilt & distraction and even proof of his claim that this world is rotten. So pretty big brained, in theory. But you might just think I’m reaching and it’s irrelevant since it didn’t allow him to complete that plan.

Lee's strategy was amping himself (mainly his speed) in order to get past Gaara's sand and do some real damage to him. Also, Gaara's sand was protecting him at first, but once he saw that his auto block could no longer from Lee, Gaara went on the defensive. Not only did he have to use the sand armor, but he watched Lee like a hawk for the moment he could substitute himself and capitalize on Lee's weakened state. There was strategy involved in that fight, it's just harder to see because Lee's fighting style is so straight forward and Gaara's is so subtle

"ah man, this opponent good. better power up real quick." fighting (in anime) in general isn't something really strategic imho, since you're bound to acting or reacting on the spot. sure, there is something like wearing your opponent down for example. but it always boils down to who is hitting harder or faster, which then in itself would be the strategy: disable the opponent before he disables you, which from my point of view would be the "strategy" lee was going for.

(Kinda) Those weren't fights where they simply outpowered the opponent, they were where they needed to use the tools within their arsenal to either gain information on their opponents & act accordingly, or to exploit weaknesses/opportunities to use abilities that seem hard to take advantage of at the moment. @@TheGloryXros yeah those are very good examples. i agree. especially naruto vs pain was amazing in my book. i think "strategy" in itself is a hard term to nail down really, because i.e. in the pain fight, naruto had his clones prepared, and as stated in the video, threw his second clone into the air when he used the smokebomb. but for me this translates to a strategy only being available to the one who has the upper hand. i.e sasuke vs raikage. sure, that amaterasu on his susanoo sounds great, but its not a strategy per se, its just a on the spot idea, a reaction tho the raikage stomping the snot out of him. but maybe thats just me. good examples though, thanks for the clarification. i still think much simpler strategies as in the gaara vs lee fight also count as such. maybe not from our standpoint, especially given after the later battles. but if you think about how they as ~10-12 year olds would concoct a strategy, i think its also valid. they basically are doing the polar opposite things. lee trying to oneshot the other guy, while gaara was waiting for lee to get tired.

@@chrissyweikoop7931 The term "strategy" really isn't all that loosely defined as you're saying. Like DygoKnight said, would you say Choji vs Jirobo was a strategic fight? Obviously not. There's clearly a difference. Strategic fights require at least one of a set of things they use the tools in their arsenal to do: 1. Manipulate the situation to their favor, despite being at a power disadvantage or being restricted from using better tools in their arsenal 2. Figure out someone's strengths & weakness(es) and learn how to exploit them 3. Make use of prep time to properly counteract their opponent based off previous knowledge I agree, the Amaterasu on Susanoo wasn't strategic. However, Sasuke vs Itachi & his setup for Kirin IS an example of Sasuke using strategy.

I loved the video and your content! I have a few notes tho: I think that to say that the war arc lost strategy entirely is wrong, but the strategic aspect was far less important in that era of the show. Before the war arc, there were countless examples of a fight where the strongest fighter lost because the other fighter was able to use strategy to determine their weaknesses (ex nature vs pain, Any shikamaru fight, team 7 vs zabuza). That aspect was completely forgotten about in the war arc. Sure there is strategy, but you did cherry pick all the best examples. Where was the strategy in all the pre Madara war fights? It didn't exist. Also, it's frustrating that in the war arc, the winners of fights were usually whoever had the best magic eyeball, not the smartest character.

A great example of this was Naruto vs Pain with the Shadow clones. Most people don't care about strategy. What they are trying to say, is they want the fights to be tense. That's all stories are, right? Problems and resolutions to those problems. Gaara vs. Lee. Sasuke vs Gaara. Little strategy involved. But who cares? Lee had a great character showing, and Sasuke fought nobly against Gaara even though he wouldn't win. Why are these fights okay, though? Well for one, Gaara is still a wild card. We knew he was some kind of monster, but we hadn't seen the extent of his powers. What's more, we figured that Sasuke (to a degree) was up to the task of taking Gaara down. Moreover, it showcased their GROWTH. Little strategy. But, tense fights because the battles felt fair. Naruto didn't need an Izanami level asspull or some random powerup to beat Gaara. He and Gamabunta did so just fine. Same with Sound 4 fights. While these do indeed have some elements of strategy, this is not what makes them good fights. It's that we thought neji, Lee, gaara, choji and Kiba could've literally died in that arc. The fights weren't just strategical, they were genin fighting to the bitter end, using every ounce of their strength to succeed against WORTHY opponents. Now do you see? It isn't strategy people want. People want consistency. They want the fights to make sense. When Madara just undoes ET or flies (literally) and takes Kakashi's eye like he's superman, or when Guy survives the Gates or when other stuff like this happen, people aren't missing strategy. They're missing the fights making sense and being fair and grounded in what we already know about the characters involved.

The only thing i truly dislike about naruto fights is just how many of them end with sudden power ups. Some people really loved every time naruto turned into the 9 tails to beat up his opponent but I always just sighed. Naruto turning into the nine tails to beat pain felt like it stole narutos victory, it felt like pain won and then was promptly cheated out of that victory because naruto had the nine tails. Every time naruto should have lost by his own merits he's saved by the giga fox. Naruto literally gets killed by madara, and is promptly revived shortly after. The series basically sets it up so that naruto can never lose and thus every fight loses some tension because why would you ever worry about him winning or not? if he's on the brink of losing the literal god of the manga will come back to reality to give him a huge power boost.

It didn't feel like pain won. Pain won. Sage Mode Naruto was nowhere near powerful enough to box with a TIRED pain, and needed 8 tails to save him. You're right, it loses tension. Like think about the Sasuke Retrieval Arc. It was a LEGITIMATE question about if Neji, Choji, Kiba, or Lee would survive. People legit didn't know if they were going to leave alive. That sense of tension comes from the opponents being very tough, but right for the characters and therefore fair. There didn't need to be an Izanami asspull or "reverse the signs for edo tensei", the characters slugged it out using their best and the chips fell where they did. I mean, imagine Gaara pulling it some new ability that just mercs Kimmimaro. It would've felt so tame because there was never any threat! In Shippuden, lots of fights (not all of them!, but many) have asspulls or random powers that came from nowhere which are broken

War Arc characters are spamming bijuus that destroy mountains and countries, and Kurama destroying mountains at the beginning of the series is not an argument for how ridiculous the power scaling was at the end of Naruto, yes Kurama destroyed mountains, but he was not human, and it took the most powerful ninja in Konoha history (before the retcon) to sacrifice himself not to defeat, but to seal Kurama. Madara, Hashirama, Otsutsuki, all that should never have happened the way it did. Rock Lee vs Gaara is a ideological debate with fists, which is incredible and it doesn't need the other clever stuff we've seen in Shikamaru fights. The problem is plot shield and no consequences to actions which would got you killed if you were a normal character. The problem is saying "look at this world, it's so structured and well-thought" and then Sasuke surviving an atomic bomb because well, he's the main antagonist basically. I've always hated Sasuke for that reason. At least Naruto had an intelligent device to keep him out of trouble, the Kyuubi, which is also a good excuse for endless chakra. I don't think people were mad with the anime later on because of how weird or explosive things got, it's just madly inconsistent and illogical within the same rules we had been believing for the whole time.

@DygoKnight a tactic is a stort term plan or method of carrying out a strategy. For example, if you do this, I do this to counter, outmanuver, or whatever. In most Naruto fights, from what I recall, they only ever think 1 to several moves ahead, if that. Which is what I consider using tactics as a strategy rather than using tactics to pull off a strategy. A strategy is when you plan out a series of events to the desired conclusion. It's a long-term plan. Think Shikimaru vs Hidan. He had the end game planned out, the bombs and pit and everything, then used tactics to get there, controlling the fight start to finish. In other words, "While strategy is the action plan that takes you where you want to go, the tactics are the individual steps and actions that will get you there." "Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat." - Sun Tzu Diedara vs Sasuke is a perfect example of this.

After considering for a minute I think it's not that there's no strategy it's that allot of these strategies often don't pay off because Madara can just use some overpowered ability to get out of whatever trap he's put into. There's allot of strategy being used by Madara's opponents but not allot being used by Madara himself because he has no need for strategy because of how strong he is.

15:07 the difference though is the 9 tailed fox and the giant frog Gamabunta are like mythical creatures/animals that are treated as a natural part of the world. The Susano is a giant energy humanoid monster that mimics the attack of the user like a mecha. I don't mind Susano and think it still works in the lore, but I can see where the Mecha argument comes from

I think us Anime fans in general get pretty emotional about our headcanons and opinions. But Naruto for me at least gets especially emotional. I think it's because Naruto is an amalgam of really good and really bad stuff coming together. You see so much potential being wasted left and right but it still competes with the likes of One Piece and FMA. It's hilarious and infuriating all at once. 😆 The rewrite series is making me realize that even more.

14:40 most people don't compare the Ninetails and Gamabunta with the susanoo beacuse both of them are entities rather than jutsus/kekkei genkais. while yes, the ninetails when sealed can give the user more chakra and gamabunta/other summoning creatures shown can be summoned with chakra + a seal, they're still not justsus themselves.

9:10 so the Rinnegan is the final form of the sharingan, but can't see through naruto's basic genjutsu? This is a plot hole tbh. If genjutsu worked that well then Kakashi would have used in with his chubby buddies against the very same pain present in that battle. Edit: it seems i fucked up on the transformation jutsu, sorry boys. Severly underrated jutsu this one.

@kachucho872
@kachucho872 Год назад
@@DygoKnight the transformation jutsu is a genjutsu, the most basic one since even naruto can use it. And the rinnegan can see through genjutsu, multiple people use it as a defense against debates like itachi vs madara/obito/nagato to downplay his genjutsus and tsukuyomi vs other sharingan and rinnengan users. Also naruto used the same plot hole against obito with his transformation jutsu yet again! The most basic genjutsu being used against mangekyo+ characters and working is outright hilarious.

@@kachucho872 you seem to have a clear lack of knowledge of what genjutsu is. Also just because someone on the internet says that “rinnegan is a defense against all genjutsu” doesn’t mean that it actually is. There is no clear statement one way or the other, even if there is evidence. Also someone have sharingan (MS or EMS included) doesn’t mean they’re immune to genjutsu, it just means they see more of the illusion all at once so they have an easier time realizing the falsenesses , alongside it giving them a resistance to genjutsu. If they were actually immune what would be the point in Sasuke or Itachi attempting genjutsu on each other, they were testing to see how strong the others defenses were

I think you've lost the point of the criticism. Yes there's still attack/counterattack etc, but we are talking TELEPORTATION, truth seeking orbs that annihilate whatever they touch, giant impenetrable armors, etc. OFC there will be counters, otherwise it wouldn't be a fight, but the issue is that we went from people punching each other and whatnot to landscape altering planet busting moves.

Dygo Knight the coments you made about the sasuke/naruto last fight kinda makes sense, but sasuke was using simpler strategies there (throwing a fireball and then coming from behind to hit a Chidory, and also using Universal Pull + Flame control to beat naruto. At the start of the fight pressuring him to stop his shadow clone before they become too much for him to stop. However his strategies in that fight are really simpler compared to his fights against danzo and deidara, and theres a natural phenomenon that happens in every human being that, for me at least, explains why he was so rushed in his strategies in that fight. Wich is called Decision Fatigue. If you observe sasuke you can see the times where that hit him (after fighting danzo, he goes to fight aggainst kakashi and just pull out a susanoo and blinds himself instead of playing a bit more strategic, and also that fight against naruto) since naruto had kurama's help during the war, he didn't had to make all his fighting decisions ans strategies by homself which could've decreased his Decision fatigue. Just a theory, an ANIME THEORY, thanks for reading

Looks like somebody didnt look at Naruto v sasuke properly. There was strategy there. The whole early portion of the fight was Sasuke prventing Naruto from using his staple Shadow clone jutsu by preventing the hand sign. He was kicking his ass. Then even after lots of clones summoned sasuke used a universal pull into a inferno style attack to neutralise all at once. If thats not strategy idk what is

I know its probably Storm canon since CC2 was ahead of the anime with Storm 4 and because I legit CANNOT remember if it happened in the War in the anime💀 BUT even so The Allied Shinobi vs the 10 Tails and Six Paths Naruto and Sasuke vs Sage Madara has CRAAAAAZY big brained strategy Sinking the 10 tails in a hole and filling it with cement and drying said cement and then YEETING EVERY possible jutsu the had at it with RasenShuriken leading jt was HEAT🔥🔥 And then Naruto and Sasuke essentially combining their chakra and Anchor themselves with Susano's Swords. Then the form a Bijuu bomb and continue CHARGING it then using it as a LITERAL DRILL to pierce Madara's meteors was ALSO DOPE🤷‍♂️💯

The Rainbow Mario Man I don't know; the war arc had some lost opportunities. For example, Gaara speech was a neat idea but the concept that all the Ninja's would be able to just cooperate based on words, it's a stretch. I think what would have been neat is you have that speech but we could have seen a team of Shinobi still struggling to work alongside one another, even with the Zetsu army/ Akatsuki down upon them. I also think having the Zetsu army was really lame. One of the things I really liked about the Pain arc was the idea that the Five great nations were fighting these endless wars and these smaller villages were caught up in them, much like our world. It's why Nagato founded the Akatsuki and wanted to go through with his plan. A part of me was really hoping that the War arc could have been with the Akatsuki, uniting these smaller nations together to fight against the Five. I think that would have led the final arc to have been better in that it isn't just a generic zombie fight. Heck, you can even keep the Edo Tensei and Madara and throw in the Infinite Tsukiyomi stuff. All in all, the war arc in Naruto has its high and low points, but Kaguya for me really dragged it down in that came off as a cop out of Kishimoto. At least, the final fight against Naruto and Sasuke was good and Kakashi vs Obito was good.

He believed heavily in his own power (which without Kakashi was unbeatable) still had the two rinnegan and he was still planning on having his tailed beast paths, at that time he still had Sasuke’s full support aswell as having Kisame one of the heaviest hitters in the Akatsuki. Obito really had everything going for him, plus he only needed to grab Naruto and Bee, which he would’ve done if not for Kakashi interfering in that fight. It’s less a matter of how did Obito expect to win and more how did Obito fuck it up so bad that he DIDNT win
