Regardless of how hype the 550 has become, if you can get them at retail or close to retail I think they’re definitely worth it! I’ve got two pairs and I’m not even a “sneaker guy”! Great vid buddy

I like my black/grey/white 574s for casual milling about. Cheap at $80 comfortable and look good imo esp with slim selvedge. Great vid as usual.

Great video! I do have to say, to give you hope, Stridewise did a video on chrome tan leather, and the process has become a lot better. According to him, the factories making chrome tanned leather is much better than it used to be.

These are cheap leather with a polyurethane coat to make them so tanky, definitely not pigskin. Better leather quality on the ALD 550s and the made in USA ones coming next year.

I had the ALD Evergreens but personally I didn’t find them very comfortable. I wear my Jjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjound 990v4 Navy all the time. Those are hella comfortable. Either way, love New Balance (and screw SNKRS).

Actually, Weston at Rose Anvil cut them in half and the leather isn't that great. It's heavily coated split leather with no grain. But yes most gym shoes have crummy chrome tanned leather

i bought darn tough a while back (they were actually really expensive, because of import duties when shipping to EU) for a hike in northern sweden. two pairs had holes in them only after 100 kms... not really a fan

I wear all sorts of new balances, but found the 550s to be so narrow for my wide foot. sad. maybe I have to get past the break in process but not trending in a good direction :(

I wear a size 8 in most shoes and went down to a 7.5 in these too as they're very mong in the toe box. I could actually go down a full size to a 7 which would be perfect length wise, but it would then be too narrow.

Wicked video. hm, So, the question; "Why are these so popular?" You 100% provided one answer that answers that question - but in a very inside baseball way. The product knowledge you just schooled us on - no one freakin' knows and I'm sure not many care to know. I'm a huge NB customer and the 550 is by far my least favorite shoe. As sad as it is, the endorsement and collaboration marketing gimmick is as old as time and really easy to execute, replicate, and generate superficial momentum. That is what happened here. A subpar shoe and profile, made by a great company, that a designer picked up and took the path to least resistance in pumping up his own profile while NB feeds from it. It sucks and it's sad. Unless it's an original design and profile - I think hype collabs deteriorate the brand and only service the collaborator. Time will tell.

I'm not sure what's so sad and sucky about it. It's literally a shoe that was forgotten about and would have never again reached the light of day unless it was re-marketed. I admire what Teddy did, even if it's "played out" or whatever now, I think it's remarkable that he was able to take an almost irrelevant and defunct reference fro decades ago and make it the most popular silhouette of 2021. And I disagree about it being subpar, I think it's incredibly versatile and a beautifully proportioned shoe, that's not something that just "hype" creates, if everyone in the world is wearing them.

@@Sturnburn772 remarkable is a fairly strong word. I'm a designer as well and "remarkable" is a rare word in this industry. It's okay for things to be forgotten as that's evolution. The qualities and attributes Michael speaks to should be why these are popular again, unpinned by that, but unfortunately, it's entirely centered around the collab. I don't agree that it's versatile - I find them to be heavy, slow, and not as comfortable as others. I own a pair of 550's so these critiques are not unfounded. What's more; I think that it has stolen unwarranted attention due to it being basketball and nostalgic skewed.

I like the shoes quite a bit! That being said I really don’t want to scuff them up because I think they are gorgeous. I will say though, out of all the adjacent styled shoes I’ve had to these these are the most retro feeling!

If you don't wear sunglasses they might see the light coming through the seams of your human costume. ... chromium, whatever. not worse then plastic. there's plastic in the air, in the water, and in peoples blood. ... sometimes when a place runs out of a thing they just replace it with a different thing. the driver just picks up the order and hands it off, better to keep them out of the loop.
