I've fished jigs for 45 years. They are my number one go to bait for bass. I find myself in agreement with all you say in this video. Most fishermen don't detect the strikes. The most common take is the one that feels like the weight on the end of the rod is gone, so you're feeling nothing. The best takes are that solid thunk. That's the one that makes me love fishing jigs.

Jonny, i have to tell you this. i am 64 years old, fish out of a 1954 Alumacraft jon boat. I've been watching your videos regarding offshore fishing, and videos about fish finders. Feeling encouraged, i purchased a Lowrance Reveal 7 tripleshot system. I was on the water setting up the finder and completely amazed at the bottom structure in Smith Mountain Lake. Within 100 yards of the dock i came across a secondary point drop off from 10 to 25 feet. Well, just like you said, I looked for structure and looked for white dots holding just off the structure. So i pulled up on that spot and BAM....15" BASS. I adjusted my bait and threw again....BAM another 15" bass! I've never been an offshore type jig fisherman, and cant remember EVER catching a fish on a jig. But just like you said, football jig with a Misslebait trailer and I'm in business!!! Thanks for all the videos and advice. I cant wait to actually get to the area I want to map. I have a feeling im gonna boat some huge fish......thanks to you!

I’ve been throwing 3/4 football jigs for years. Caught so many good fish on that bait. I always have a 3/4 football jig tied on, love them. I’m a line watcher. On occasion I’ll cast my jig out and I kinda know how long its gonna take to get to the bottom. When it doesn’t do that, I set the hook! Bass will on occasion catch it on the fall also. Again great videos, keep them coming.

I learned by cutting the hook off of jig getting into a small creek or pond and casting the jig closing my eyes and feeling what the jig was doing. Feel the rocks,sticks,or wood it was a real eye opener now it second nature just like your method. I would also force myself to use jig only leaving all my other baits at home. I really like the videos you put out they are really good information for all thank you for your expertise.

It's good if you not sure gently jerk rod a couple times. If pull gets aggressive an rod tip dances up an down. Reel line parallel to water. Once rod I'd parallel to water stop reeling drop rod tip say phrase I'm going to set the hook then set hook by pulling rod up an back really really hard an keep rod tip high. Let fish drag out line, reel in some line. Then let fish pull out more line reel in some. Soon as it slows down line letting out line fish is getting tired an reel that bad boy in. If you use flipping jig use no more than 1oz if u get a bite or not sure gently jerk rod tip if rod dances an pulls back reel line parallel to water stop reel drop rod tip an say I'm going to set the hook an lean back keep pressure to reel fish in

Great information on jig fishing. In your video you talk about the jig feeling stuck but you are not sure and you lift the rod to try and detect what it is. One thing that I learned to do over the years jig fishing is when I feel that it may be stuck I will lightly shake the rod tip. Many times when it is a fish that will cause them to bite. If you shake it and nothing happens then it is most likely stuck on something and you are not feeling a fish. Also make sure you watch your line if you pause the jig. Many times you will not feel the bite but your line will be moving, and the fish already has your jig even though you felt nothing.

I was doing ok while the waters in lakes Mead and Mohave were warmer, but now that it's finally turned cold and the fish have gone deep -- which can mean anywhere from 40' to well over a hundred feet deep out here -- I'm not pulling them in as consistently as I was. I blame this almost entirely on how much I suck at fishing jigs deep off the bottom, but I feel like this vid has given me a huge head start in the right direction. Thanks!

If you're unsure another way is gently jerk the rod. If you get pull back an the pull back is aggressive an rod tip starts bouncing up an down after jerking rod gently it's a fish. Reel down til rods parallel to water, once rods parallel to water drop rod tip angled down, say phrase I'm going to set the hook an pull rod tip back really really hard with the jig. If you use a flipping jig in grass lean back as you raise rod tip to 12 oclock.

Great Video, Jonny. Very informative! One question that I have relates to bottom composition. I hear a lot of jig fishermen referring to "Painting Rocks" or "Counting Rocks" with a jig. The problem being that the lakes that I fish here in West Tennessee actually have very little rock in them. We have some hard bottom, but it's usually harder soil, not rock. Do you still find the jig to be effective in these types of lakes? Or is having rock sort of a "Must" for fishing a jig effectively? I have friends in other states that swear by the jig, and they all talk about dragging across rock, but I struggle to get the number of bites on the jig that I would like to. Is the lack of rock killing the effectiveness? Or can dragging a jig through dirt, mud or sand be equally effective, in your experience?

Hey Johnny, Great video as usual and so informative. Jig fishing as well is one of my favorite techniques year around. Quick question though......I wouldn’t consider myself a pro fisherman by any means but definitely an average to slightly above average fisherman. I can find fish on graph, rock/brush piles, and get bit most of the time some way some how with the occasional skunk of course with no bites. I have been really focusing last 3 years on Graph efficiency and finding active feeding fish and just in general trying to figure out fish movements and patterns throughout the year. As well as trying to figure out local forage patterns/habits and when and where they are mainly being pray for the predator fish. Im having one huge problem though. I want to fish some bigger tournaments here in S.C./Georgia/N.C but I just don’t feel I’m there yet. I do really well in small tournaments or club tournaments or on days at the lake by myself. Where the problem is my weight at end of day. I feel I can catch 5 fish and get Bit through out the day, but to be honest my average weight is between 7-10 lbs. I can not seem to figure out on my graph when I’m looking at a good group of fish or not. I will get a good solid hard return with the particular color pallet I use at 20’-30’ (which is a Green to yellow to orange to red return) and it will only be a 1.5-2 lb fish. I even dedicate days to only drop shoting on these returns on certain days to try and figure out what caliber of fish I’m looking at. I’m really trying to key in on more quality fish with fewer bites. I even try to fish smaller groups of fish (4-7) that I see on graph thinking these might be larger more mature fish. I can NOT , to save my life, figure out when I’m looking at 1-2lbs fish verse 3-6 lbs fish. Is this even possible first and for most. Second, do you have any suggestions. Thank you for all the time you take to make these very informative videos and share with us the public. Your a very Humble man that is a Great Angler. Keep up the great work man.

Awesome video, I usually throw 1/2oz jigs on my favorite rod that Max’s out at 3/4oz, is it better to throw a rod with a 1oz max or heavier for 3/4oz jigs?
@ejzabojnik834
@ejzabojnik834 4 года назад
I throw jigs on a rod with a lure rating of 3/8-1 oz {4 power rating} for 3/8 and 1/2oz jigs. For 3/4oz jigs I use a rod that has a max lure rating of 1.5 oz. All the jigs I throw either pitching style or football head have a stout hook and I want to make sure the rod is stiff enough to get a good hook set. I don't use light wire jigs although they do make them. If you are getting good hook sets on the rod you are using then stick with it. I would use a rod with a 3/4 lure max rating for 1/4-5/16 oz jigs. To me those are finesse jigs and would be more difficult to throw with a heavier action rod.

I'm looking to get into off shore fishing with a jig. But when you're describing the feeling of lifting up for the 4+ seconds because the bass has it sitting in its mouth. You don't feel like when the bass feels that pressure of the line that he won't spit it? I feel like it would be the same as using a rubber senko and on the initial drop you have a suspended bass and he just sucks it in his mouth and still sits there. That way when you go to play the bait you feel tension on the line and the bass lets go of the bait

@stevevoelker2733

Great info Johnny. A couple things.....it seems I am missing some fish while loading up to set the hook. I will put tension on the line when I think a fish is there and if I think a fish is there I will reel down while lowering the rod. When the rod is "low and loaded" I will set the hook. Is this poor technique? Should I set the hook with whatever leverage I have as soon as I feel it? Also, you demonstrated your 4 side sweep retrieves but it seems most of the time in video clips I see you forward facing using vertical techniques. Do you do both and just side sweep more often. Why the apparent discrepency?
@FishtheMoment
@FishtheMoment 4 года назад
Hey Steve. I plan on making a video about how to set the hook next week and that should answer your first question. As far as the retrieve, I sweep to the side most of the time. The only exception is when I'm fishing around tall pieces of cover like brushpiles and rock piles. Then I move my rod more vertically to pull the bait over the cover and not get hung up. I didn't mention this because I thought it would cause confusion among new anglers watching this video.

If you have enough room to effectively set the hook, then set it. If not, reel down fast & set then. If you feel like you had a soft set, give another medium set to sink it in. You may be taking too long & the fish spits it out. Using a bait scent can help fish hold on a few seconds longer as well as enticing a bite.

Question for the group. How do you fish a jig in heavy vegetation? I try, but its constantly covered in weeds. I would love to become a better jig fisherman

Depending on length and density of the vegetation, different jigs can be more effective than others. For heavier, longer weeds, a swim jig or flipping jig will be effective to skim across the top of vegetation. For shorter, more scattered vegetation, a football, flipping or swim jig will work as you can hop the jig easily out of the cover and back down with minimal snags. If you’re consistently getting weeds, make sure your weed guard is intact and in position. Texas rigged plastics also work well for the thick stuff. Tight lines!

Pulling fast is like throwing a square bill on the bottom out deep. 70% of time is a lot. And your other best fish Cather is a crank bait
