My ex (sadly) wasn't sure so we started off canoe camping with our small group of friends. That worked out very well. She was ready to try flat trail. But she was mesmerized, at one camp (National Park) where she took a walk through a green tunnel down to the lake to get some water. Wonderful surprise, a hummingbird decided to come up the same tunnel at the same time. They both were in unexpected shock came to an abrupt halt and stared at each other, then the hummingbird darted off. My wife came back as excited as a little kid. I was over the top excited for her. Wonderful memory.

Thanks mom! One thing I’ve found that puts my noob backpacking buddies at ease is to create a detailed trip plan with safety information, weather forecasts, “no later than” times, etc. and talk them through it. “Nothing like an old school safety brief to put your mind at ease.”

Yes to all of this! That’s what someone did for me. Introduced me to backpacking with an easy one nighter. 3 miles in, with just enough challenging elevation. Had a comfortable nights sleep. They carried a heavier load. 3 miles out back down to the trailhead. And drove to the nearest burger joint to celebrate. Such a fun experience! I’ve been hooked ever since. 😍

shoutout to Mom. I'm about to try a 105km hike solo (a week on the trail), and both my mother and my partner are worried sick. So thanks to all the moms (and all our loved ones) for having our back when we strike out into the wilds. Also, thank you so much for this video. My own partner is very much in the "interested, but hesitant" category, and I'm working on building them up to doing some longer hikes, because I really love it and want to share that with my partner. One other thing I would add: pay attention to your loved one's pacing for other physical needs, not just distance. One mistake I made on a test hike was that my partner gets low blood sugar much more rapidly than I do, so needs more snacks along the way. Likewise, drinks a lot more water than I do. So not just taking breaks to rest from the physical exertion, but planning your snack and water breaks accordingly really helps.

I love talking to long time mountain goats and backpackers when I encounter them on trail or camp site. Almost everyone told me that they’d rather be with a person they can live with in peace than insisting on that person loving what they love doing. The seniors I met tend to hike or backpack with like minded people, leaving spouse at home. It is great that the couples allow each other the freedom to do what they enjoy doing be it hiking, golfing, shopping, or cruising.

Personally I like hiking alone. I like to be able to go at my own pace and not feel like I have to keep up with someone or someone else has to keep up with me. It also gives me a chance to just be with myself and clear my mind and reset. I like to be able to just pick up and go when I want to. I guess that's the upside of being single 😊👍. I'm sure there's also times when it would be nice to just go on a easy hike with someone or a group but for me that's pretty seldom. Usually when I go hiking it's a pretty hard hike and like I said I like to be able to go at my own pace. Definitely a lot of great points in this video though. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

I think it would be awesome to see a video about how you plan your trips . Where you park, or how to get there. What goes into planning, I.e. elevations, distances between stops for the night, distances between water sources. I’d like to eventually get into backpacking and I know this would benefit me, and hopefully others wanting to get into it as well

It's all about the views and the destinations for newbies. You're so right that the hike has to be short, but it has to end soon at a great spot and have something to see at spots along the way. A great spot could be a waterfall, a lake, a mountaintop, or a spot near a backwoods loo (that my wife's one request). Also, I take along HEAVY fresh food for the first night, a real steak with onions and peppers give a different feel to the trip, and fresh greens are good. Tell your mom thanks from me!

I backpack 3-4 miles with my kids, spend one night, hike back the next morning. Fits easily into our schedules, and everyone has a blast! Since all our trips (so far) have been so short, I don't have to worry too much about weight. Most recent trip had no water source so we had to pack it all in, and my pack weighed in at 32 pounds. Easy to carry for the distance we're going.

Re: fit person struggling with starting hiking I recall a story from my first martial art dojo, where the teacher brought a group of really athletic expert students to a tournament in a region where skiing was a thing. A couple days before the tournament they arrived and decided to do a little skiing, which they had never done before. Again, these are super flexible, strong, tough people. The next day they woke up in AGONY because they overdid it skiing. No injuries, just exercising in a way they hadn't done before, probably focusing on certain stabilizing muscle groups that normally don't see much use, possibly difficulty related to exercising in the cold. I don't remember whether they did well at the tournament, sorry :P

Got a good friend to begin backpacking just a couple of weeks ago. She's travelled extensively and keeps very fit, but not really hiked or camped before. Hearing me talk about how much fun it is got her interested so I proposed a low-stakes walk around Leith Hill in Surrey, on top of which is a small tower providing a focal point to visit. I assured her of easy terrain, only modest elevation, well-documented trails, mild weather (which I checked every day leading up), and we can easily adapt the route or cut short if she wanted. We discussed clothing selection, navigation, contingency plans and equipment, so she could make informed choices and see everything had been considered to ensure we had a great day. We covered 16.5km (just over 10 miles), smiling all the way, and even made it back an hour inside our target. On the way home she was already enthusing at me to plan the next trip for the following weekend.

A hike with accommodation in a hut or hostel or similar can also be a great way to get into it. You get the outdoor experience, without the camping part. This way you don't need expensive sleeping gear right away and you can focus on footwear, trekking poles and appropriate clothing before needing an expensive sleeping bag and pad.

I still remember well when my wife and I asked her sister to join us for a weekend hike. This was her first hike and camping trip. The first day included a 10 mile hike in a hilly forest and just as we were about to arrive at the tent area, my sister-in-law burst into tears of exhaustion. We got the tents up and the rest of the evening was spent comfortably cooking and swimming in the lake. The next day was a shorter hike and all went well. Afterwards, the sister-in-law laughed about the trip and said it was fun, but we haven't seen much of her on the hiking trails with us since then.👀

Agree with all this. I took my wife backpacking for the first time a few years ago to the Black Hills and she wanted to do all the touristy stuff first and I was anxious to get on the trail. After being on the trail and realizing that we would get to see WAY MORE WILDLIFE on the trail, she understood why I enjoy it. I just enjoy the views in the wilder and less crowded areas.

Thanks Mom! Great topic Steven! We took a first time 14 year old on a hike a few weeks back here in the Canadian Rockies. Hike was flat, 12 km one way and high in views, especially the resident moose at the campsite. All in all, it was a great hike except for the grizzly we saw on the way out. The boys had to pepper spray it and my wife and I had to bushwhack our way around it. It was a great lesson for them, the bear was really only interested in eating berries and grubbing along the trail, not at all interested in us, it had no care or concern about our noise or our presence. It wasn't moving unless it wanted to. To your point, you can control a lot of variables related to hiking with first timers, but you can't control the wildlife. Being prepared goes along way to helping the first times be comfortable with the hikes. I have hiked a lot and had never seen a bear on trail, only when taking a first timer. I do need to try a satellite device though. Great topic and advice. Thanks again to you and Mom!

99% of the time I hike steep, far and offtrail on long two week+ trips. most of my friends can't do it. I have accumulated enough gear to fully outfit another person and for several years have been able to introduce several friends to Backcountry hiking and fishing. I agree with your advice. keep it to 4 miles a day, make sure their feet are not destroyed, that they can sleep well, stay warm, eat well and they will have a great time. teach them to catch a fish on the fly, even better!

I used to use foam-filled air mattresses, but every one sooner more than later developed a leak and I was sleeping virtually on hard ground. Back when I was able to go on multi-day treks, my biggest problem was that I had only 2 types of friends, the hard core folks with whom I went caving and the kind who think camping in a Forest Service campground is roughing it in the 'wilderness'. The former will only backpack if it leads to a cave or else I'm too slow, and the latter won't go on multi-day trips at all. So I went on these challenging treks alone. Bad idea, I know, but what was I to do? Today, I go car camping at isolated sites, most likely hunters' campsites off dirt roads. Yes, I'm still alone, but I'm near my car and sometimes even in cellphone range.

I agree with this video. Especially giving us a heads up about what to expect. My first hiking/trail experience was this: Me, completely indoors, overweight, sciatic issues. Him, allegedly experienced, skinny (not thin, skinny). I went head first into the adventure. Agreement was separate sleeping quarters. 6 miles almost everyday for 2 weeks straight, living on the road, and day 3 he crawled into the camper because bats (yes, I was annoyed and upset). I wasn't warned about coming prepared for all sorts of weather. In my inexperienced brain "deser = hot" so I brought all my stuff specifically made to stay cold. I came with leggings, thin socks, camping boots, a spaghetti strap tank top, a thin bedsheet designed to keep you cool and a sleeping foam pad 2inches specifically engineered to suck heat from you. Oh yes. You see where this is going. I remember we stopped by a Rei before our adventure. First time in real life I ever visited the store, and in my gut, I felt moved to spend the cash on a winter sleeping bag and a winter down jacket. But, did I listen to my gut? No, because I decided to trust my buddy that he would provide. He was so excited to have someone hike with him for a change, it was strange to me, ngl. Then, we went hiking in the desert, hot, wonderful, sweating, awesome... Then, the night hit in the desert. My goodness it was COLD. And, I had to shower every day, the solar shower was useless if we came back after dark, we used his propane stove to boil water, but then all I had to wash with was peppermint soap, designed to keep you fresh. It was miserable. Not a single time did he offer, "Hey, I see you're not doing so well, what's something we can do differently? We can catch a store if you like?" Nope. It made me feel people who hike enjoy watching people suffer (now am I saying he enjoyed watching me fail, no, I am not. But, it did make me feel that this is why y'all are lonely as hell and no one wants to go with you). For 4 days straight, he talked about himself, would interrupt my conversations, and turn it around to make it about himself. Now, I know he was only trying to relate, but after 4 days of that, I got annoyed as he didn't ask me a single question to get to know me better. Which led me to believe he had no real romantic interest, what he wanted was a female who could do what he liked. Mood killer for sure. Then, we went to Colorado, absolutely beautiful...until it wasn't. Lol. One night, the weather got down to 40°, the tent he had was meant for summer, he didn't bring gear either, which struck me as odd since he had previous hiking adventures. I was so, so cold, all I had on was leggings, a tank top, a windbreaker (from him), wool beanie (from him), and wool socks (from him). And, a the bedsheet and foam pad I mentioned earlier meant to suck warmth out of you. That sleep was so terrible, and whenever I tried to get sleep, he'd wake me up to look at random things like a pile sand, which made me more mad as the days went by. I wanted to learn from this experience, so I didn't want to quit. But, after two weeks, I was ready to go home. I was cold, uncomfortable, tired, in pain, and emotionally exhausted from listening to him talk. Every day after 6 miles, I was in pain, sciatic exacerbation, self massage, pain medicine. And, I learned quite a lot about myself. I learned that my top priorities out there are: 1. Sleep & warmth. I found out I could care less about how magnificent the mountains and scenery looked if I'm tired or exhausted, which affected my appetite. If appetite declined, so did my energy. No energy, no hiking. And, being warm is top priority otherwise I cannot sleep. 2. Cleanliness- I learned I enjoy being clean, so I at least need to wash the important bits to feel good and keep going. 3. My own space- Unless it's an absolute emergency, I don't like sharing my sleeping space. Even though we made arrangements to sleep separately, because of how cold we got, we had to share, and that made me annoyed. I will now also bring my own rig so if I'm done, I'm done and can leave whenever I want and not feel trapped or kidnapped by my friends. Living a mostly sedentary lifestyle, I realized we need to ease ourselves into it because our minds may be willing, but my body said, "Yeah, no." Everything else was 2ndary to me, slowly upgrading all my camping gear, learning to make my bag lighter, best head lamp, being more active to be physically able to walk long distances, try camping events if interested, etc. And, now, because I know my experience could have been better, if I want to bring someone along, I don't push them to be where I'm at. If they say no, I move on without feeling any sort of way. I like to warn my buddies ahead of time what to expect. Currently, they are at "perfect summer weather camping with no chance of inclement weather." And, I am ready to test my gear in rain and high winds. I enjoyed learning a lot about myself during those two weeks we went camping, but I would definitely take the time to check in with my mates and ask them how they're doing and definitely giving them a break when they start breaking down either spiritually, emotionally, or physically. ❤️

One is up for short introductory trips because she works a lot like me and is a weekend warrior, so a short trip fits our schedule. The other friend, who does big backcountry trips with groups, told me when I told her I'd gotten all my gear, "Oh, you won't like it". Uhm, ok, whatever. Good thing I'm stubborn and don't take no for an answer. So, I've found another very experienced friend (used to lead big backcountry trips) who will go out with me to get me started. He likes teaching so I think it will be a good fit.

An obvious one but I'd recommend being very picky for good weather. If your new hiker is very cold, hot or wet, chances of success are slim.

Yup. This is the real stuff. Don't do all the distance, altitude, ultralight, etc. all at the same time. It's Exposure Therapy and is a key for human adaptation to all new experiences; it's about progressing from tastes of a thing and then adding in complexity in doses. In climbing, we do it with indoor to outdoor-sport to outdoor-trad to alpine, etc. We also do it with fear of falling: intentionally taking bigger and bigger falls in a controlled environment. Cool to climb inside the head and have some real talk. 👍🤕

One thing I haven’t seen you cover in any of your videos is weaponry Whether it’s just a knife, machete, sidearm or even a rifle. Also, less than lethal alternatives, like bear spray or pepper ball SideArm I will always have at least a good, sturdy knife. I usually go with a folding spec ops military grade pocket knife and possibly my full thing K bar. And if I’m going way out in to the middle of nowhere, I will bring all of it. I do still need to get a good rifle that fits easily on my mountain bike though.

My issue is only one person wants to go backpacking with me and we already go tent camping and day hiking and she's like a child, I have to do everything for her and she also can't just enjoy nature, she has to constantly have a conversation or play music or something, which seems counterintuitive to the experience. I go into nature to enjoy the silence and she gets kind of annoying because she can't allow a silent moment to pass, she thinks silence is awkward, even if I try to say something like "hey I'm going to record this deer on video, let's be real quiet for a few minutes" she'll start talking seconds after I say that already forgetting that I wanted a little quiet for a minute. And she's super clingy, if she wanders off to explore I let her go but if I wander off she follows me, I have to tell her when I'm going to the bathroom or she'll follow me right away, she has to be by my side and she even gets offended when I sleep in my hammock instead of in a tent with her, even though she snores super loud and I did let her know that as politely as I could, that that's why I can't sleep to close to her and it's not because we aren't friends anymore lol. She also won't do any work or prep, she doesn't cook and sits around mentioning how hungry she is so I'll cook, even if I'm not even hungry, she won't take initiative. And Idk how she thinks backpacking is going to work when she has no equipment and I've almost bought everything I need, she has more money than me and refuses to buy practical stuff and just buys weed and burgers every day, the most expensive she can. I'm gonna be ready and she'll be like "oh wait I still need a tent and this and that". But if I decide to just go solo she'll be offended like how dare I not bring her, when she's not even prepared. It's weird, she was literally in Conservation Corps 10 years ago and did backcountry and brags about it, but she can't handle anything today and I know she's going to make backpacking a nightmare. Every time I daydream about backpacking I see myself alone, but she's gonna insist on us going together, I'm never going to know what it's like to just be in nature alone with some silence and no other people, she just won't have it. And I'd like to go with other people or even make new friends because I only have 2 friends I hang out with and my parents and brothers, all my other friends are far away or busy, or many are disabled and can't partake in strenuous activities sadly. I would kill to have my mom go backpacking with me but Idk if she would, she loves hikinh even at 65 but she's not really a camper. But that would be such a cool experience, or if my brother wanted to go, but I just never see that happening. And then also aforementioned friend will be jealous of anyone else I go with, it makes it hard to do anything. I know it's toxic but she's been my friend for 17 years so I can't just be like go away. Sorry this is a bit of a rant lol it's just constantly weighing on me rn and this reminded me how tricky it is navigating relationships around hobbies sometimes...

Think food! Different dietary requirements for each person, including health needs. If you are the leader, you need to ask folk ahead of the hike. Or ask them to bring their own. Here in the UK, a short diversion will often get you to a pub. Check that the hostelry does provide food that day. Also discreetly sound out your fellow hikers as to their affordable budget.

Great video. I mostly go solo. My adult sons go with me always when we can get together as our residences span 600 miles. My sister likes it, but only overnight, under 4 miles and not too difficult. Rest of the family/friends, nope.

I love bikepacking, but my spouse absolutely hates bikes and the outdoors even more. I, on the other hand, hate cities and going to war museums, but he love those. I just have to be content going on my trips and him on his own.

Have you tried backpacking instead of bike packing? I’m an avid backpacker but bike packing is soooo different. Try setting up a beginner backpacking trip somewhere beautiful.

Young kids: start light, 2 snacks and a small water bottle in the pack of their size. Results: my son has done the A.T. CO. Trail and spent 3 weeks in the Sierra-Nevada Mts. To stay in shape he backpacks riding 1-3 hundred miles on a weekend. He is in Kosovo with his National Guard unit for the next year. He is looking forward to hiking the Balkins area.
