You don't know what you're talking about. When Putin said; "the collapse of the USSR was a catastrophe"; what he meant was that millions of Russians had ended outside Russian borders, in the 14 other countries that came out of the Soviet Union. Putin does not want to reconstitute the Soviet Union, that is what the west wants you to believe, and you have fallen for their lies and propaganda. You're just a brainwashed westerner!

He's just helping to complete the Collapse of the mighty Soviet Union. He didn't experience the momentous event because he was stationed by the KGB in Dresden, Germany, at that time. In his mind, he isn't convinced that the former Soviet Union has really been collapsed forever. I, on the other hand, did remember buying $0.68 for a gallon of gasoline ⛽ in 1986. It was cheap so the "gas station" with a nuclear arsenal was probably suffering. I don't think that the Saudis were actually aiming directly at collapsing that "gas station." The high oil prices already jacked up many times by both the Arab Oil Embargo and the Iranian Revolution spurred much oil exploration. Both the North Sea and Alaska started producing a lot of oil by the 1980s so the Saudis had to lower their oil price to avoid losing their oil market share. The all-out arms race of the Cold War and the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan didn't help with the finances, either. The Saudis might have been using exceptionally low oil prices to help the Afghanis to drive out the Soviet Union, too, because of their shared religion of Islam.
