Don't undermine Dave Bautista, who really has shown a more nuanced approach to acting. Loved him in Blade Runner 2049, can't wait to see more of him in Dune: Part Two, and don't forget the depth he had for Drax in the MCU
Bautista seems very willing to take small roles for the chance to learn from great filmmakers like Villeneuve or Rian Johnson while the Rock just chooses yes men and always has to be the leading man. If any of the 3 wrestlers were to get an oscar I'd bet on it being Bautista
True. While the fights are fixed and story are pre written the moves and pain is real. Just look how much they rack up in medical bill. They’re not even compensated for it or insured.
Honestly, I’m not sure. I watched wrestling when he first showed up. He was barely a wrestler - even acting wise. What John Cena has always been is willing to work harder to improve. No ego - he’ll get so aches, take lessons. But he won’t stop improving. When he put THAT part of him towards acting, it was game over. He’ll succeed. He needs to.
I'd consider doing a follow up on this video with Dave Bautista next. Dudes got a bit more range compared to Cena, but they both can push their limits with their characters.
I wouldn’t say Dave has shown more range more than the fact that John hasn’t picked more diverse projects, but it’s a general rule of thumb that an actor who can do comedy can do anything and in that respect John is a whole bunch better than Dave
Bautista is a better actor for sure, he's actually become a very interesting and competent "character actor". But Cena has the charisma and likablity of a legitimate movie star + he's got way more range and depth than say, the rock. For me Bautista is a way better actor but Cena has that It factor that's rare among actors.
Dave is by far the best actor of the trio. He has a wide range of acting chops. John Cena has expanded his reach and is getting a lot better but the rock generally plays the same character and everything he's in.
I think Cena is a combination of both. While Batista is the better actor and Dwayne has charisma, Cena has both. He is charismatic enough to keep yourself glued to him but doesn't rely on playing himself so he gets self-absorbed on his persona and he can act
I always like to remind ppl that it was Bautista's choice to wear those glasses in Blade Runner. Such a small thing but it shows his insane instinct for acting.
I don't think you give Dave Bautista enough credit. He can absolutely play emotional roles, and has shown he can play comedy and action. He's Cena's equal, if not his superior. Both are really great.
Agreed 100% Bautista has proven he can play characters who are serious or dramatic the entire time. Cena hasn't done as well when he tries the same thing.. he really needs a good mix of humour and seriousness to make it work well.
Batista, as an actor, shows the most range, easily jumping from comedy and action roles to more dramatic and even sombre ones. Cena, on the other hand, is a great entertainer, especially in comedy
Nah, they got it wrong: Cena is the better entertainer, he isn't afraid of making himself look like a dweeb in order to get a laugh out of the audince, and Bautista is the better actor, dude has range and can actually pull both drama and comedy.
@@studentNEET319 that's more thanks to Gunn's direction and writings. But Cena, he simply is more used to comedic acting. He simply has lot more funnier moments than Bautista. I mean he literally spawned the invisible and chinese speaking meme which are significantly larger and more legendary than the drax meme. Like even Drax has meme that is derivative off Cena's invisible meme.
I 100% agree with this one. Bautista has more range but Cena simply knows how to have fun and is very good at grabbing the audiences attention by entertaining them. Even in bad films, Cena can still be the highlight for simply being fun. Meanwhile Dave is straight like a chameleon, you might not even realized it's him despite having a very recognizable figure. It took me a while to realized that Bautista was Sapper until I rewatched the film again and actively looked for him.
Dave Batista, it’s actually the best wrestler turn actor today, did you see his work in blade runner 2049, glass onion, dune , he is taking roles that demand more acting range , than Jhon cena or dwayne.
wrong, he's been in so many films that were pretty mid or bad, once he found his comedy action roles, that's when he took off. The Rock shines in comedy action blockbuster. Cena's serious mode movies were pretty amateur and bad, which is why he took so long to breakthrough
I'd take Batista over John Cena any day. Outside of Peacemaker, there wasn't another piece of evidence of him turning his acting into success. Whereas without Batista's fine work in Knock on the Cabin and the latest Knives Out movie would have fallen flat. I like Cena , he's funny and charasmatic, but from a pure acting point of view I think he's a bit behind the work Batista has been doing. I'd even go further to say that Cena plays a variation of his likeable goof character with a heart of gold in most of his movies if not all. Just like the rock plays the rock in every movie. But batista's role from Guardians to Knives out to Cabin are 3 completely different people.
@@FriendofWigner Wow, the fact i forgot about these two shows that this video should have been about Batista, not john cena. None of these roles are generic action roles. Even with Guardians, he took what could have been a bland one note character and added some extra character elements.
@@nathanmichael167 Agreed. I kept seeing Batista tossed in as a 'generic' wrestling actor, and I was getting a little miffed. The guy has taken some interesting roles, done well with them, and seem like he is all-in on becoming an actual actor.
I'm all for dunking on Dwayne, but this piece could have shown Batista a bit more respect. He's more than just Drax, his work in Blade Runner, Knock At The Cabin and Dune has been phenomenal.
Coming to the comments seeing Dave get his flowers is my favorite thing about this video existing. Dave Bautista is by far the best actor out of the three, shameful people only acknowledge Cena and Rock. Dave has the most talent as he labels himself an actor, not movie star.
Worth mentioning in his so far only stint hosting SNL (which needs to be addressed ASAP!) he was FANTASTIC. Showed a ton of range, charisma, and incredible comedic timing.
I feel like it was implied too much in this video that Bautista doesnt show the same range as Cena when id argue has shown more range than Cena so far. Not much, but more as Dave's niche has been Drama whiles Cena's has been comedy
I think it's great wrestlers are finally getting utilized properly. The skills they bring with their ability to tell a story with more than just their lines is something that we get to see more and more through guys like Cena, Batista and I bet Roman Reigns could be fantastic someday too.
Roman Reigns is already fantastic. HIs current run as the "Tribal Chief", an emotionally abusive yet deeply insecure and paranoid mob boss is probably the best "bad guy" WWE has had in years. He took acting lessons during the pandemic and it really shows
@@playz8538 hating it? I had the exact opposite experience and found overwhelmingly positive comments about Peacemaker. Which is great, because I really enjoyed watching Peacemaker.
I will forever defend Dave Batista as the best wrestler turned actor. The man has range! But John Cena has been able to turn around and become a very close second. I’m glad we can all agree that the rock is getting lazy
i guess getting lazy ist the right term. cos in the beginning of his career he showed his (comedic) talent. I LOVE his performance in "Be Cool" for example. but getting bigger and bigger roles he decided to play the same and same persona again and again. probably for his big paycheck. I really would like to see him in a decent role or in real (not just physical) comedy.
I want to mention the gem that was “ 5 questions with the champ” with John Cena. There was a weekly web episode where he would answer five questions in some of the most hilarious ways.
I remeber when John was on wired for that Q&A thingy. There was a question about why wrestlers shave and he went into detail about how people could grab body hair and how that hurts, went further into detail about using body oil and tight outfits and it ended on him having found another method because "People are scared of the very presence of a grown man wearing something from the 90s"
I was watching Peacemaker and my wife walked into the room during his big emotional breakdown scene. Just stood there and went “damn I had no idea he can act.”
I think Cena said it best himself in a Savannah Banana video, "we're all in the entertainment business." So he clearly knows his strengths and weaknesses but ultimately does one thing constantly and that's entertain audiences in the ring, on the screen or on Banana League diamond striking out.
Pre-2010 rock actually showed potential. his role in walking tall and gridiron gang gave him layered characters that he played pretty well. but then he sold post-2010 lol
I've been watching John Cena on WWE since I was a kid, and I already had a feeling that he was gonna be a movie actor. The only question was when it would happen. The best part about him is that he has a surprisingly quick mind. He's very aware of the moment, and he'll answer every question with confidence, no matter how random.
I was very sceptical with Cena first. He was ok in Bumbelbee and Suicide Squad. But when i heard Peacemaker is getting his own show i was so confused and i was doupting Cena can carry show himself. And boy i was wrong. And im glad i was wrong
After seeing Pain and Gain I'm reminded how much acting potential Dwayne had before his ego got worse. I'm glad to see that John Cena and Dave Batista didn't go down that path and improved upon their craft.
He’s freaking funny, I remember his cameos as himself and then his transition to actual acting I was confused but impressed. “You can’t see me” was a joke for middle school back in the early 2010’s lol
I love how you highlighted Kevin Nash! He may not be a leading man or get many roles with more than a minute or two of screen time BUT... Kevin Nash's role, somehow, seem a lot more dignified than most of the roles wrestlers find themselves playing
I like how you just breezed over The Marine, a movie with witty comedy, but Cena plays the character very seriously and straight man That was the very first film I saw with him and I saw he can act, I didn’t even know who he was at the time and he still impressed me
I agree. I followed none percent of his wrestling career. But I will go see a movie or show just because he's in it. I have fun when he's acting. People forget that sometimes you can go see, and wholly enjoy a movie because it was just fun for you. Not everything has to be a masterpiece to be exactly what we need it to be. Not every performance needs to be Oscar worthy. I will note that Bautista is a solid second place for me. Not only have I enjoyed Drax.......but he has shown some chops in Bladerunner and Dune.
I like Cena a lot, he was incredible in Peacemaker, especially the moment on the piano. But the video seems to reference Dave Batista negatively, which feels unfair given his brilliant cameo in Blade Runner 2049 and some solid action performances in Guardians and Spectre.
I would argue that Dave Bautista has demonstrated greater range in his acting career and is better than Cena. He's spectacular in Blade Runner 2049 and Glass Onion and shows off some pretty impressive acting chops in both. Same with Knock at the Cabin and Guardians in many ways. Both he and Cena have done great things for themselves.
I feel like this video is unfairly down on Dave Bautista. He's actually shown some superb range outside of Drax. His turn in the short prequel for BR2049 was outstanding. Recognise!
So far Bautista is the actual best ACTOR from WWE. Obviously Rocks the biggest star. And Cena has always been my favorite! Except the weird china thing. I hope he does great! But Dave in that cabin in the woods type movie was fantastic
The thing about Cena that is interesting is that he is a student of transition, and it seems he learned the lesson well. He took a VERY 90's-style path into fame: start in low- and mid-budget action -> score some work as a punchline in some full-strength comedies -> supporting roles in RomComs, usually the handsome new boyfriend to be overthrown, or some superhuman competitive suitor -> comedic relief with dramatic parts in something GrimDark, usually a horror film or an arthouse piece from Cannes or SXSW -> ensemble lead in a B-movie, adult-oriented genre film -> breakout lead in an auteur-driven passion project, usually some kind of Oscar Bait needing lateral stunt-casting to stand out -> Stop typecasting into Action and only do action movies that support their artistic body of work, not their bankroll The path was invented by Arnold, and just about every Hollywood muscle-god has either tried following the path and failed, or failed because they DIDN'T take the path; the Rock included (he just can't get a dramatic breakout that doesn't default into some kind of action premise.)
Just watched The Bear S3 and never expected Cena to come as guest actor, but it was awesome, he's so funny and goes so good along with the other characters we already know, he's just so good of an actor now and so likeable.
I thought he was a joke in his earlier career in movies (The Marine, etc). I can't recall the exact point where I thought "I like this dude. He's funny and seems super cool", but his performance as Peacemaker is what sealed the deal for me. Also, his work with Make a Wish is super impressive and should be noted.
Loved the vid but also kinda felt like Batista was undercut. Dave is on the same level- and I do understand that this particular video has to have a theme for the clicks. But also, you gotta S/O Dave.. could been a video people watch after this video. Double views. …..lol
I agree with a lot of the things this video says about John Cena. I actually think he's pretty funny. But the way they ignored the work Dave Batista has been doing is outrageous. He has done a lot and you can tell Batista is truly trying to be a great actor.
I think the elusion to Dave Bautista being one of the “other normal” wrestlers turned actors is inaccurate because Dave has made it his mission to stop being typecast as the big dude, and hes been very successful in that mission. Sure to a mainstream audience, being the dumb muscle in Marvel movies didnt do him any favors but he even had some very good deep emotional stuff going on screen, his roles in Blade Runner: 2049 and Dune also help his mission.
Paramount dropped the ball by not passing the Transformers film to Cena as the new protagonist, it would have been fun to have a skeptical character as the companion while the Autobots remain sincere.
So, because a lot of people are mentioning Dave Bautista here. I think its from Maven's own youtube channel. Maven said when Dave was 'popping off' in his very first run with Evoloution (Dave, HHH, Orton and Ric), there was a WWE party. And one of the female wrestlers (I think Stacy as he mentioned) husband/BF was a hollywood actor - and for most of the night Dave did was talk to him. And after that he was already going to acting school part-time when he was not on the road. Even John said he him self went to acting school for a long while. Peacemaker is the show that solidified him as a proper actor by getting a complex role. Both of these men committed worked hard, did the grind from the bottom. Its why they are doing so well today.
of the 3 (Dwayne Johnson, Dave Batista and John Cena), Bautista blends into more roles. Dwayne did some of his better acting earlier on, in Snitch, for example, that does not require him to take off his shirt. Cena is funny, and he can cry. However so far, his physique makes all of his acting memorable. seeing a giant muscular man cry, seeing his wide mouth and eyes complaining about the Decepticon, He is still John Cena in the roles he plays. Perhaps we'll know him more as the Peacemaker as that role fits him like his uniform.
Oscars and Naked John Cena!!! (Humiliation Ritual) Humiliation Ritual used to prove dedication!!! Humiliation rituals goal to elevate puppet that just sold out!!!
Batista is probably a better "actor" as far as range goes, but Cena has charisma and great comedic timing. I guess whoever you prefer simply comes down to what movies you prefer. I like silly, quotable comedy movies that arent meant to be taken seriously, so Cena is my favourite of the trio.
Excuse you, but Dave Bautista has worked with Denis Villeneuve (twice), Rian Johnson, and Zack Snyder. He even does a great performance in Knock at the Cabin from M. Night Shyamalan
Totally agree, during the suicide squad movie, John REALLY surprised me with how believable his character got at the end, even though it was a complete genre shift. And it was only better in the tv show !
John and Batista are honestly good actors. Hope they do more in Hollywood. Also recently Edge has done well on Percy Jackson as Ares, he was a solid villain, and I think if Edge takes notes from John and Dave, he could do well in Hollywood.
Rock tried to get out of his comfort zone with films like Be Cool, Southland Tales, and The Gameplan. Then, he just decided one day to get super jacked and get this money, and that he did.
Dave Bautista is way better as an actor than any other wrestler turned actor John just does the same as the rock playing themselves overall when has John played a actual Character and not just a goof version of the same dude he had been on the mic
Trainwreck was definitely the performance that convinced me that Cena could be more than just another wrestler. Check it out some time. I do think Dwayne CAN actually transcend those trappings too (watch Snitch) but his PR department is too obsessed with maintaining this invulnerable image to let him branch out. As others have said Bautista has been getting more serious roles lately as well.
