In the wake of the massive release of Oppenheimer, we are going to explore what it is about Christopher Nolan movies that delivers above so many of these other Hollywood releases when it comes to making his movies feel "big".
In this video essay, we are going to walk through his visuals, soundscapes, and storytelling from films like Oppenheimer, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and the Dark Knight, to find the answer to unlock the answers to how Christoper Nolan makes his films feel so big.

WHAT A BRILLIANT VIDEO. Hey Scott, i'm telling this over and over too: using Film has subliminal psychological effects, a) on shooting on set of a Movie, because it's a limited and costly act, real Film is running through the Camera, Performances have to be on piont b) on presenting in a (5/70 or 15/70) Cinema, it's the feeling of a limit, you have to pay more attention because real film is running through a projector ...hard to explain, it's all very subliminal, but for me that feels very different to digital where you can reshoot/delete or scrub any time. Agree in all your Points! very smart Video, wish you the best!

Thank you so much! And love this. Totally agree. I actually think and hope that a return to projection on celluloid might actually be the thing that draws audiences back to theaters. W crappy digital projection that's not all that different from our home tvs, there's something commodified and special about having a skilled projectionist put on and perform a film for a captive audience

@@ScottJeschke Cheers Scott, i'm actually in talks with the only 5/70mm Theater in town to finetune the projection system and do more any repeatedly screenings in future! Digital can be very clean but dead. I think celluloid presetetions are possible for a few highlights of the year, in future. I'm also motivation a non operating IMAX Theater Owner to re-opening. let'do what we can. The Crowd will enjoy it in the end, they will feel the experience when it's back again and done right

@@mixdown78 Wow! Super awesome. Hope to see more of this kind of thing happening around the US. Special 35mm and 70mm screenings were one of my favorite things about living in LA while I was there. The sound of the projector, the flicker, richness of color. Nothing quite like it.

Let me know what you guys think of this thesis! Also, apologies for butchering the maestro Ludwig Göransson's name! Not sure where the "Van" came from when recording this 😂

Scott, apart from your great images, what really drew me in on this video was your rhetoric and storytelling. I was in a real bubble with no outside "noise" for the last 12 minutes. Thank you for that.

What a great video, a very good analysis of Nolan’s storytelling and the way you use images and music makes it a very engaging watch. I did actually think the extra "van" in Ludwig’s name was a deliberate reference to Droog Alex’ fondness of "a bit of the old Ludwig van". 😅

Valid points regarding using longer focal lengths to make things feel bigger but that's not something that cant be done digitally on a sony alpha camera. As for film and practical effects, its just purely marketing. Like you said it is rare and in that sense special, kinda the same marketing technique of NFTs, but from a sense of actual measurable qualities, there's not much meaning to it.

Another amazing video Scott, thank you once again! I was wondering if you get any copyright strikes or annoying warnings, or the fact that you use really short clips of these big movies goes unnoticed by the gods of RU-vid? lol
@ScottJeschke
@ScottJeschke 11 месяцев назад
Thanks so much, man! The whole copyright thing is always tricky. In this case it's educational, but I don't know all the specifics of the rules. I know some of it is like clips shouldn't be longer than 5 seconds. Music is the one that they pick up on really quickly though. When I play the Oppenheimer theme, I kept it really brief, sped it up by about 2%, and mixed it with my licensed to music to obscure it a bit. The music copyright thing of the frustrating part of RU-vid, because I have lots of video essays that I would love to make about movie music. But there's kind of no way around that.

@@ScottJeschke I've always wanted to know about this and all the creators who I've asked about constantly dodged the question and I understand why, but you finally gave me some really valuable tips on the matter and I will keep researching, so I don't get screwed by the algorithm. Thank you so much, man. I really appreciate all the help!😄

Almost everything I shoot is in 24mm lol. But I think what makes videos/movies “Big” is the mixture of shots. Showcasing your environment while also focusing on the story and subject. Just my opinion though

Ha I like wide lenses too, and lots of directors have made wide lenses work for big scope movies when used intentionally. There is something about that longer lens compression though, that definitely shows us scale. Whereas I think wider lenses give us a better idea of scope

So if those are the full frame equivalents to iMax, would that make the APSC equivalents 16mm and 25mm to the iMax’s 50 and 80mm?
@ScottJeschke
@ScottJeschke 4 месяца назад
Yeah, pretty much. About 16.7mm and 26.7mm Although the T stop would need to be really low to look equivalent. I don't have the exact number though. I'm guessing you'd need like T1.0 lenses for a similar look
@-austinsmith
@-austinsmith 4 месяца назад
@@ScottJeschke gotcha, I have bmpcc6kg2 and a sigma 18-35. Crop on that is 1.6 compared to full frame so it looks like I would have to make it like 18 and 25mm and keep the lens wide open at 1.8 to get in that ball field. Eventually I will go blackmagic full frame 6k. Thanks for the quick response. I’m a Nolan fan boy
