Why Northern Pacific Airways Has Chosen The Boeing 757

Northern Pacific’s choice of the Boeing 757 could be seen to raise a few eyebrows, given that it’s an older technology aircraft. However, the airline’s CEO Rob McKinney has made it clear that this was a decision driven out of necessity, and that new technology aircraft are certainly on the roadmap for the startup airline in the future.

I flew both the 757-200 and the 757-300 eight years. I have been retired since 2016 and last flew the 747 series. When I was trained on the 757 it was my first glass cockpit having transitioned from the steam gauge DC-8 and I had ten days to get it down before the type ride. It was a lot of late nights studying but I got it done. The big change for me at the time was how little fuel it burned for a long leg compared to the 4 engine DC-8. I'm an old dinosaur but its hard to believe the 757's are obsolete. I loved my time flying them. I wish Northern Pacific Airways a successful endeavor. The 757 is one of my favorite aircraft. But to say that it is a 20-year-old technology is understating the case considerably. 22 years ago this month, December of 1999, I got my type rating on the 757 (and the 767), which was 17 years after it entered service in January of 1983. It is more correct to say that it is basically a 40-plus year old design.

I seem to recall there were some design issues with the 757 that made it expensive to manufacture, so it was more expensive relative to it's abilities than the 737 or 767. There's also the drawback that such a long single aisle takes a very long time to load and unload. Especially now, it would make sense to make a new aircraft that serves the same size range - the NMA Boeing has been hinting at for a very long time - but at this point with everything going on at Boeing I'm starting to doubt they'll be able to make a new aircraft, or that the new aircraft will be designed and built right. For now they seem to be trying to stretch the 737 - a 1960s regional jet - into this role, and it will be very marginal at best.

They keep talking about making a "NMA" that would fill the same niche, but with all the issues they're having I'm doubtful they'll ever manage that, especially to make an aircraft that is designed and built right. They really need to shift their entire corporate mindset to get back into making good airplanes. It might not get the gas mileage of say the 797 (which hasn't even been built) or a A 321Neo, but they have to be dirt cheap to acquire, maintain, and they remain some of the safest aircraft flying. If I'm not mistaken, other than the intentional crashes involved in 9/11, there have been only two 757s that have crashed, and both were due to pilot-computer input error, never mechanical failure. I get the early flt out of LHR over to DUB, clear US customs there, join those in the know for the Guinness en route. Evening hop to GSO and home for dinner. Just love the 757.

I like the 757, I've taken it many times domestically, and was the plane I flew on from Newark to Berlin. It's a reliable aircraft, and I'm sure it's a great business move to get them in a startup situation. Maybe once they have established themselves in the market, newer aircraft models will make financial sense, but nothing wrong with starting with this.

Unlike a lot of commenters, I'm going to put my affection for the 757 aside. We're talking about a new business here and the choice of the 757 was a huge business decision and somewhat of a gamble in terms of profits, given the inefficiencies of the plane compared to others. As with any business selling a product or service, if the price point is right then there's a good chance of success. The people at Northern Pacific will have done their homework in terms of costs and will have looked at other long term operators of the type like Icelandair. In the UK the low cost holiday airline Jet2 are still using 30+ yr old 757's successfully. Although the design is nearly forty years old it still stands up to scrutiny today. And passenger won't know any different anyway. As the saying goes, 'A coat of paint can hide a thousand sins' !!

At least for a little while, if they are successful they will probably buy A321NEO XLR's once they have the capital. Agree though that the aviation world is getting boring with the vast majority being six-wheelers (meaning 737 and A320 series), no variety. Just look at what it was like say 30 years ago, when we saw a wider variety of things, not just different models but entirely different looking airplanes. Some with underwing engines, some with tail engines, conventional tails, T-tails, 2, 3, 4 engines, and so on. Now it's just a question of how big your underwing-engine conventional-tail twinjet is, and most of them are 737 or A320 size. Granted that's what everyone uses because it's been found to be the best design, most practical and efficient. But it sure is boring.

@@quillmaurer6563 Their CEO did mention they are looking at next-gen aircraft once their operation matures, A321 LR and XLR being one of them. Only us avgeeks and plane spotters think it’s boring, but if it’s making airlines money, what can we say?
@quillmaurer6563
@quillmaurer6563 2 года назад
@@magnustan841 To me it seemed heavily implied in the video that they would get A321XLR's or something once they had the money, the 757s are just to get started. They don't have the capital or available aircraft to use A321s, while 757s are plentiful and cheap, but less efficient. Very true what you say about boring aircraft. Airlines want what will make them the most money, that which is cheap to operate and reliable. Most passengers want that which is comfortable, quiet, reliable, and facilitates cheap tickets, they don't care if it's the same type they've been on a million times before. To both airlines and most passengers, aircraft are best described as appliances, the same way a lot of "boring" but reliable, economical cars (most Toyotas are the best example) are. If for whatever reason there were to be an airline flying 727s, avgeeks would love it, but they would be more expensive to fly and thus more expensive tickets, more likely to break down, and noisier, so most passengers would prefer instead the company with the A320NEO's. Well unless the 727s have 1980s vintage seats in them that provide actual padding and legroom, I think a lot of people would tolerate the noise for more comfortable seats than the modern "high-density" stuff so many airlines have gone to.

Iceland Air used the B757-200 as well. It was a great plane to fly on. I do hope that Boeing makes a 757 with crescent wings and rear mounted engines, so it can go closer to the sound barrier and have better fuel economy. A crescent wing is a wing that has a large sweep back for the first few dozen feet from the wing root (> 45° sweep relative to straight wing) and attaches to a less swept back (25-30° sweep back from straight wing). That means the aircraft can benefit in both lower subsonic speeds, and higher transonic speeds.

It's nice to see good business sense being used for a startup airline. Not a thing really wrong with the 757, it'll suit their needs without as much investment giving them a good chance rather than being seriously upside down financially before the first passenger boards. The aircraft is well known by pilots, well supported as it's still in common service, and easy to pass on as the airline grows into newer planes. Glad to see a CEO actually taking a common sense approach, and as he said, it's not so much Mr. right, but more Mr. right now. Good choice.

Its interesting how airline industry is actually turning a full circle. It was popularized in the 60s with medium-long haul services by narrowbodies like the B707 and DC8, with capacity up to 240 seats( DC8), and then moved on to widebodies, double deckers and whatnot, but now the airlines are turning to the A321 XLR for medium-long haul routes, which is ironically a narrow body plane!

I would agree with all the commentators who like this bird. Considering they are chopping them up now, why not build a brand around it. You can probably get 5-8 of them for one new 787, which allows you to add routes more easily. I must have been on over 100 757 flights on American in the 90’s, and it was a great flying plane…built like a tank 35 or so years ago. No carbon fiber here, and on those oceanic runs where there is weather, the plane is fast and can get up high fast if needed. And it can handle short fields with a load because of those big engines. If you’ve ever seen one jet off from Orange County, it’s pretty cool…😉👍

Makes sense. As the CEO said, they can start TODAY and don’t have to wait. Furthermore the 757 still has decent efficiency, costs nothing to acquire and the cabin can be easily upgraded to modern standards. Zero interest vs. high efficiency is a model that works for hundreds of small operators, why wouldn’t it work for an airline?
