@@keylavenosa9990 well, it depends on where do you come from and where do you wanna go. For example: Bilbao airport has international connections with mostly all European Capitals. But, if you come from overseas, you'll probably have to connect flights. 🤷🏻♀️
Asturias is my favorite region of Spain when I want to get back in nature.. That's why I highly reccomend the Camino de Santiago northern route or the primitive route which passes through many of the places you showed in this video.. Incredible cintematic content! Puxa Asturies!
I visited Spain 30+ years ago--San Sebastian, Madrid, and Alicante. My husband has *never* been to Europe, and Spain is our likely destination in a few years. This lovely video just put Asturias at the top of our itinerary. Muchas gracias!
Not moving to Spain, but I always love these videos. James has all the ingredients for the ultimate travel tv host. Approachable, humorous, and knowledgable!
The Picos were our introduction to Northern Spain before later exploring Galicia and the entire North Coast - apart from the Basque Country, which I need to visit before it's too late ...
It's striking how all these Atlantic-facing/Western European regions & countries look so much alike, with their own unique feeling, of course: Asturias, Brittany (I'm from there), Wales, Ireland etc. The rolling hills, if not outright mountainous terrain; the diffuse, gentle greenness of the land; the oceanic climate (with some nuances, depending on the latitude); the ambiguity in the sea's color (grey? blue? green? the three at the same time?); the rugged coast; the feeling of being at the very end of the world etc. Still, Asturias is a beautiful region. Hope to visit someday, why not... Ah, so many countries and places to visit!
I'm from Yorkshire in the UK and have visited a few times. It reminds me of the Western facing parts of the UK but the Asturian coast also reminds me a little of the Yorkshire coast around Whitby with the same little red roofed fishing villages hidden in little coves. And the people really are so friendly even if you don't speak much Spanish like me.
Hi James, Yoli and Lucia! Thanks for this.I moved from England to Asturias nine years ago and have loved every minute. The countryside is green and beautiful, the Picos are a must. Next time you should check out the fishing towns and the spectacular beaches. I settled in the ancient city of Oviedo. What really convinced me to move here was the friendliness of the people. I was not wrong. and here English is not spoken by many and I am dyslexic . But nevertheless within a couple of months I made dozens of friends, some who have moved on but many I have retained. I am retired but age doesn't seem to be a problem many of my friends are half my age. Living in Asturias is in may ways living in a time that time forgot, most bars, shops and restaurants are privately owned and there is hardly a multinational chain to be seen unless you count Zara, which comes from the neighbouring region of Galicia. You forgot to mention that the seafood is also spectacular. Love your channel. All the best.
That was the most enjoyable video I've seen on the region. I was laughing and smiling throughout. When we first came to Asturias in 2010, we fell in love and came back year after year. We now make Oviedo our home and we couldn't be happier. I have mixed feelings about people discovering this region. I selfishly want to keep it a secret, but on the other hand, Asturias should be experienced. Saludos desde Oviedo.
I’m with you. Don’t let this secret out. Lol. Only half joking. My wife and I have been visiting Spain, from the States, for 20 years. 10 years ago we “discovered” Asturias and Cantabria. We come every year for 2-3 weeks at a time. It’s our home away from home. But, lucky for us, we alway visit in Autumn and Winter months. We don’t see many tourists from outside of Spain. Cheers on your retirement. You’ve found the loveliest place to live.
@@mistreated, I agree about Cantabria, too! Excellent food and gorgeous nature. Very nice people. Fuente De was like an alien landscape and so beautiful. We stayed in Potes and it was a lovely experience. Most of the tourists are Spanish and Autumn is a very good time to visit. Thank you for the kind wishes. Retirement here is more than we dreamed.
@@j.n.sloane You’ve said it all. Our first stay in the region was, Hotel del Oso, half way between Fuente De and Potes. Incredible! Theses days, we mainly stay in Suances, then just drive all over Asturias and Cantabria. There’s nothing like it. Here’s to a happy and healthy new year. The wife and I are also retired and looking forward to moving there soon.
You went to Covadonga, Lake Enol and Cangas de Onis! These are some of my favourite places in Spain. Thanks for highlighting them and showing that Spain is much more varied than most people think!
I’m in Cangas de Onis, Asturias.. My father was a shepard, and his father before him.. Glad you got some fresh sidra.. It’s a treat!!! I’m just surprised we didn’t run into you, as you hit a few places, we are at daily…. And El Polesu is owned by famila…. Fantastic sidra bar!!!
I'm from Yorkshire in the UK(a beautiful region itself if you ever visit with some stunning coastline) and stayed in Covadonga a few years ago. It's such a beautiful area with a completely different pace of life. The owner of my hotel Casa Rural Priena was so friendly. She gave me a cider apple as a gift. I never realised how big they are. In the UK cider apples are much smaller. I thought it was a cooking apple at first. What we'd call a Bramley which are very sour. I visited the reconstructed shepherds hut up by the lakes. I didn't realise people were still living like that. You'll see old abandoned shepherd huts on the moors of Yorkshire. I'll definitely try that bar next time I visit Cangas!
We discovered Asturias about 3 years ago and have been going back every year since! It’s my favourite part of Spain and can’t recommend it enough! We were lucky enough to visit Covadonga Lakes on Asturias day and you should definitely visit then 😊
Oh James and Yoly - BEST video yet! EVER. I actually cried. So beautiful. As ever your enthusiasm and eloquence combine to provide us with an amazing experience, Thank you.
That's so much food. I would be in a food coma too. Every thing looked tasty. Not a aroz con leche fan because I am not a fan of sweets, but that soup with the green herbs would be great.
Candamo, Spain has been calling my name since a child. My Grandfather was from there and left to Cuba in the early 1900s and then to the USA. He was the oldest and I believe the only one who left to find work. I was able to research and find my heritage that goes back 5 generations that are on record of what they found for me in Candamo. Thank you for sharing. One day I would love to go and meet remaining cousins and learn of the history. I do know land was taken from the government to build a road through it in the 30s I believe. The land definitely calls for my name.
A very different soon to the sterotypical sun, sea, sand and sangria of the south that most of us have visited. I have been to San Sebastian and Bilbao and know that there is another, so to speak, out there. I would love to visit this region. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Asturias is the best place in the world. Probably I'm biased Since my father and all his family were from there. Probably I'm biased because since I was a kid till I was like 23 every single summer were the best in my life when I was there. The nature, the people, the food... everything. Now that I'm 53 and not so often I can go... maybe once every 2 years, but once I'm there I breath propely.
I stopped at Pajares to stretch my legs once on my way to Oviedo. What an amazing view from the top of the mountains. It was a good idea taking the scenic route to Oviedo.
It's better primitive way, starting in Oviedo (11 days from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela). Renember The rugged and irregular ascent and descent between the mountains.
happy to find this video, i've been following your channel for some time! and i agree - we appreciate individual visitors, but don't want mass tourism. saludos desde mieres/los valles mineros from an austrurian couple (my husband is asturian, me austrian)
Great introduction to Asturias. My favourite place is Tapia de Casariego, a great little coastal village nestled along the coast of Asturias toward Galicia. It is the birthplace of surfing in Spain where two Australian brothers brought the mystical art of dancing on the waves in the 60s. Highly recommend this part of Asturias 👍
Thanks for another great video James and Yoli! Wow, that wind was crazy. The north is Chris´ favorite part of Spain. We did the Picos de Europa drive in 2015 and it was so dramatic! We had a little mini cooper and fell in love with that cute town at the end of the drive. It´s the banner to my personal facebook page and has been ever since!
Really enjoy you guys, so full of the joys of life, unfortunately being South African i can only arm chair travel because of the weakness of our currency, my favorite part of all is the food and you showing the cost, best wishes to the three of you, Arnold.
user-ww6hw7tv4u, your always will be welcome to Spain, is not very expensive a flight to Spain either, South Africa I have been 3 times, and what an amazing country!! and very friendly people!! Best regards from Malaga!!
I lived in Asturias for nearly 20 years before moving to neighbouring Galicia a few years ago. I think you both did a really good job of showing off eastern Asturias. Tip: The beauty of Asturias isn't confined to the east and in high season the east 'el oriente' can be very busy, so don't overlook other areas of Asturias. A particular favourite of mine is the region of 'Los Oscos' in the west 'el occidente' of Asturias.
Ive just been to the coast and heading back to the UK tomorrow, I'm in Segovia today, I really enjoyed travelling in the heart land of Spain, I stayed in Oviedo and really loved it and the people! I'm coming back as Im looking to buy a house there.
Been following you for years. Check out the Montaña Central next time! Un abrazu, amigu!! :)
5 years and i will be staying there for good. And 45 minutes from one of my favourite cities oviedo....glad you guys enjoyed, they are so friendly people up there and food amazing❤
This beautiful area is also home to two Camino De Santiago pilgrimage routes. The Del Norte passes through along the coastline. And the Primativo starts in Oviedo. They are amongst the most beautiful Caminos. Thanks for sharing Asturias with us!
I'd like to point out that "horreos" in Asturias have 4 legs. The ones that have 6 legs, are called "paneras" (3:27). If this has been pointed out thoughout your 302 comments, disregard mine. Beautiful video by the way. Thank you for sharing in it on youtube. Best!!
Please, don't promote the north of Spain. As the 75 year old grandson of Gallegos, it would kill me to see American fast food restaurants on every corner
With the average age encroaching 60 in Asturias (up from 48.5 just 2 and a half years ago) there needs to be some promotion. The key is to target those interested in nature preservation/permaculture/agroforestry, not those wanting to pack city apartments and streets searching for tapas bars.
Looks like we are now adding more places in Asturias to our must visit spots. Will definitely help with the new fast train to the area. Thanks for the great video guys. (as usual)
Ive been as you know in previous videos, in spain for 17yrs. When i first arrived spent first 5 yrs getting to know all of the country, but felt drawn to the north more than the rest of the country. So after spending 15yrs in madrid, we moved to Santander, mainly due to a bereavement! And after a good search, bought a place!! My wife whose from Ceuta, wants us now to share our time between Santander+ Ceuta!
Asturias is Spain's best kept secret. Amazing countryside, unique food, friendly people and Sidra is better than beer for social engagements. Asturias will change you... For the better
Hi James, Yoli and Lucía, What an amazing video. Thank you for sharing it with us. I love Spain and have visited, lived and worked in many parts of it. I must say though that nowhere has left such a lasting impression as Asturias. It is a truly magical place unlike any other part of the country. Can't wait to get back there. Saludos.
Great video. It brought back memories of visiting Oviedo in May. I went to Los Lagos de Covadonga, Gijón, Cudillero, Luarca, El Parque natural de Somiedo, Barayo beach, Cangas de Onis. There is still so much to see. So I will go back.
I’m about to move to Santander and I’m super happy that not only I’ll be living in beautiful Cantabria, but I’ll be only one hour away by car from both Asturias and the Basque Country 🤩🤩🤩 On another note, sometimes in the middle of the video I wonder 💭 where is Lucía??
What a wonderful video! Looks like a lovely, but cool, part of Spain. I assume it was shot in October/November. Beautiful area and it looks like well worth a visit.
Hi John, it is a cool part of Spain indeed. Also very different from the stereotypical imaginary of Spain (sun, dry climate, paella, bullfights or flamenco). Asturias has a moderate Atlantic climate been one of the most rainy places in Europe, with fresh summers and temperate winters, when you can find the whole mountain range the separates Asturias from Spain covered in snow and actually do some skiing. Because of its climate and rugged landscapes, that slowly fade into the Atlantic Ocean (in its so called Cantabria see), there’s an amazing dramatic scenery from valley to valley and from the coastline to the high mountains. Also because of its landscapes it has been barely invaded, only the Romans managed to conquered the area after decades of war against the mixed celtic tribes living there. These people brought there own cattle, sheep, goat (all of them different from the Iberian breeds) and for millennia shaped the environment they were sorrounded by. The cuisine is second to none, you can have all the fresh fish the ocean and rivers can provide you with, you can have some of the best meats in Europe but Asturias is synonymous of cheese as it has one of the most varied cheese footprints of Europe. Because of how well protected the wild environment is you can still fish wild salmon, observe wild bears roaming across the mountains or hike through unaltered forests. As most of other Atlantic regions, cider is part of its culture as well as the sound of the bagpipes, tradicional mythology or the welcoming attitude towards others.
The views are awesome, so all that healthy greenery means that the air quality has to be amazing (which is something that I love). I've seen enough photos of this area to know that this is a must see.
Apart of the sea, Asturias looks pretty much like my home country Slovakia 🇸🇰 those mountains and lakes look similar to High Tatras mountains 😊 but yeah, we don't have a sea in Slovakia 🤷🏻♂️😂 anyway, nice video and that stew looked gorgeous 🤤
Oh wow, the cliffs triggered my vertigo, but they were beautiful none the less. And that cider looked delicious, especially with that cheese. I'm going to have to practice my cider drinking skills before I get there. Wow, that wind. It's all so beautiful.
