Why Not All Felt Is Equal - Looking At Different Varieties Of Chess Felt 

I'm using Jonathan felt 80%wool/20%poly,1.5mm for the wooden sets,and 70/30,1mm for the plastic ones.

I recently was doing this project on a cheaper set i had, I used a cotton velvet and it worked beautifully. I sew clothes and make leather shoes so I am handy with the knife and scissors. Thanks for the look through the pieces and comparison. After my son’s years of chess lessons and clubs we play together now that he’s older and it’s quite fun again, so he “gave” me one of his older sets. Which i bought for him when he was 9, lol! #parentsarecoolagain

There is another reason the silicone sets have no felt. Many people use them because they are the only kind allowed in prisons. You can sharpen a standard plastic piece and use it as the tip of a spear made of rolled up paper. The lack of felt means that the guards can see that you haven't hollowed out a piece and are hiding drugs in it.

It is interesting that you have not mentioned Baize
