The company I work for has an outstanding mechanic helper apprenticeship program. For those strapped on cash it is a good viable option. Another route that gets overlooked and isn't for everyone is joining the USAF who will pay for everything. Thanks for putting all this information out there Bryce and keep the videos coming!

Good info for the kiddos. Thank you! My employer and my customers both struggle to find A&Ps, much less good candidates. Solid resumes are few and far between. For young A&Ps, be prepared to work hard and strive to be the troubleshooter rather than the minimal-effort light bulb/service check guy! Or, if you like making things with your hands, seek experience in advanced composite and/or sheet metal repair. We always need people who can travel and perform large repairs involving working closely with Engineering as they design the repair, shoring, skin changes, stringer/frame sector splices, and major wing plank and/or wing damage repairs. 1. Stay curious. 2. Stay humble. 3. Seek the root cause. RD, A&P, IA

Hello fellow Bryce. I completely agree. I attended school for 6 years (dual enrollment in HS). However, I graduated in 2012. Aviation has dried up around me, with massive closures around the time I graduated (TIMCO and Bombardier to name a few, both of which I worked at). However, plz let it be known that for some areas, relocating is required. As I take care of my 2 grandmother's, I cannot, so had to settle in a different field unfortunately. But good vid. I still love aviation, but it's just not viable in my area any longer.

If you haven’t started a career path yet I think you would be much better off going to school for engineering. I’ve had my A&P for thirty years and spent a decade working for a major US airline. The pay is just ok at best. You will spend thousands of dollars annually on boots, work clothes, tools, and toolboxes. So, be ready to spend weekly on the Mac, Snap-on, and Matco trucks just to be able to perform your job. Also, 90% of all maintenance activities are performed on the night shift. So, you’ll be working overnight and sleeping during the day and you’ll most likely be working weekends for years. It’s a limited industry. You’ll have to live near a maintenance base. I’d advise to take anything in the STEM field over going for your A&P. They are in higher demand, pay much better, much higher likelihood of working days & during the week. Almost every major industry in the US hires engineers. Good luck!

I’m a little nervous going back to school after doing manual labor jobs for about 7 years after HS, but exited at the same time. Before becoming an aircraft mechanic, talk to working mechanics who are doing GA work in a local hangar. Get the real story. Over 25 years ago, I had four ASE master certificates with L1 and L2, basically the top of the industry. I talked with a man who ran an A&P shop near me. He said, "do yourself a favor, and stick with your current job. You'll take a big pay cut, have more hassle, and never achieve what they promised you." I took that to heart, and when I became a flight instructor, I saw why he told me that. I dodged a bullet. The industry is not prepared to pay you for all of that hard work. An average pay mechanic in a union shop at American Airlines makes $67,131 a year. Top pay is a little over $80,000. How many mechanics can get that pay? Maybe 4% of the industry? That means that 96% make less. Do you want that?
@brycebuildsit
@brycebuildsit 24 дня назад
American is currently starting their mechanics at $35 an hour, and they top out at something like $80. I agree GA is a sham, and there is precisely no money in it. But most all my students who go to the major airlines are averaging over 125k in 2 to 5 years
@arthouston7361
@arthouston7361 24 дня назад
@@brycebuildsit That's great if you can get a job at a major and make that money. That is terrific, but my point is most kids that graduate from an A and P school will never make more than $55,000 a year. Might be a good idea to get to know the people at the place where you want to work and let them get to know you, and what you're learning, and stay in touch with them, so when it comes time for hiring, you would have a better shot. The guys that I talked to didn't even suggest that I work for an airline. I'll tell you a funny story really quickly. I was going out in a 172RG to do some commercial work with a student, and when it came time to do the run up, I couldn't clear the engine. It was terrible, so we taxied back to the ramp. It was a great safety learning experience for my commercial student. I went in and I told my boss, and he got all huffy and went outside and played with that engine for a 1/2 an hour, and finally went into the hangar and got the lead mechanic....and an hour later, I learned that the mechanic had found 3 defective plug wires. Later, I found out that that man made less money than I did. Sad.

Move to a state that has free community collage for residents. Most won't care about your residency because they want to keep the enrollment stats up and most 147 schools have a 70-80% dropout rate.... so they need bodies to complete the course and get certificated and a job. Those stats are more valuable to the school than your true residency status.

Depends you can make a lot of money as an electrician. If aircraft maintenance is something you are passionate about, then it may be worth it. It's another 19 months of school, though. @@brycebuildsit I know, I heard 1st shift was difficult to get onto. But once I gain more experience (maybe 5-10) what pay should I expect? And would you recommend taking field trips if the company offers them? I currently don't have a family or anything else to attend to when I start.

I don't have a good guess, but Bell should already have their pay ranges pre determined, so they might have an answer if you ask. Also, YES take every single training opportunity you can not only is it a feather in the hat but you get a little mini vacation just for you.

If I graduated A&P school 4 years but never got licensed is it too late ?

There is no expiration on your certs of completion. It may be easier after 4 years to go to a crash course but you could wait 10 years and we have students who did and finally got their a&p

The link is on my channel page and should also be at the bottom of the video of the description. It's basically just a private chat room/forum for the channel. It's not super active, but people have shared lots of incredible study resources
