I'd make the argument that leaving Anakin to die horribly on that lava bed was one of the most hateful, cruel, and messed up things anyone in the series ever does. The proper action would have been to mercy kill his opponent, or take him as a prisoner. But the slow death? No, that's just wrong. In war the two worst ways to kill are gut shots and thermal/chemical burns. Why? Because they're slow, they're agonizing, and if you manage to survive them you're messed up and broken for life. That's why we banned weapons that have a high probability of maiming without killing. It's also why the Jedi banned those moves. Both of the foes he uses them on survive and come back as worse people from the trauma. Now, where is the wisdom in that?
@xxxthwagdrakexxx4672

@redwizardmatt tbf the former person murdered his master in front of him while also not looking like he was going to survive getting cut in half along with anakin mauling a bunch of children for the sake of power. If he hadn't have done that then the galaxy would be far worse off
@redwizardmatt
@redwizardmatt 26 дней назад
@@xxxthwagdrakexxx4672 Bull. As the video makes clear, he could have actually killed Maul. Instead he merely wounded him, leading to Maul killing the woman Kenobi loves, among many other people. He could have put Anakin out of his misery, but instead he left him to burn which lead to Vader murdering dozens of Jedi and presumably billions of other people. If your argument is that anger made Kenobi stupid, I agree. If you make the argument that he behaved like a Jedi, you are wrong.

I honestly think he's kind of misinterpreting it. You're not supposed to use it on living beings if you have a choice. Remember that the Jedi during this period weren't used to fighting other Jedi. Banning these techniques is perfectly reasonable normally. It's just not a good look, beyond the fact that certain moves are more of a channel for anger than others. Before the Sith returned, nobody could really stand up to Jedi in combat so there just wasn't a need. I think they're more than willing to overlook it when the Jedi is literally fighting for their life.

I’ll just point out that against Maul Obi-wan did try to disarm him on Naboo, and even destroyed half of his weapon. On Mustafar, Yoda sent him with 1 goal: destroy the Sith. The only reason he didn’t finish Vader/Anakin is because he left his fate to the will of the force, which in many ways was him learning from the mistakes of the Jedi of the past era and learning from Qui-gon about following the will of the living force. Against Maul on Tatooine, he is facing down the single most tenacious opponent ever, who has just discovered that he’s there protecting the Chosen One Luke Skywalker. He has no choice but to end Maul’s life to protect the fate of the Galaxy. He even tried to reason with Maul first, telling him that he shouldn’t define himself by his ability to destroy and take life. He tried to make an appeal to him to not continue down the dark path, even after all that Maul had done to him, and then comforted him when he died!!! If this isn’t the Jedi way I don’t know what is guys. They’re not pacifists. As far as any “forbidden moves” all of these point towards a Jedi taking as little life as possible and doing as little harm as possible. I think that when you weigh the totality of Obi-wan’s life and choices, he follows that directive. Even in the legends book “Kenobi” he tries to get Orin Gault to turn back like 5 times before his final fate is sealed. I mean come on. If you want to claim Anakin crosses lines I’m here for it, but these moves are taught so they can be used in extreme circumstances, which is only when Obi-wan uses them
@shkotayd9749
@shkotayd9749 28 дней назад
Well freaking said. And I agree. The totality of Kenobi's life is dedicated to the spirit and rules of the Jedi. And when he had to break them, he only did so at the last. And that is why they are there.

What Obi-Wan did to Anakin by leaving him to the will of the force is also in line with the likelihood that even though Anakin was maimed, he could still have put up some kind of fight, enough that to land the killing blow, Obi-Wan would probably have either used dark side power or be consumed by it. It's his misfortune that Palpatine was arriving at the scene and he had to get to Padme ASAP to try and save her children.

Obi Wan understood how hypocritical the jedi code had gotten. It was more about following hard rules than actually upholding the ideology and values the rules were suppose to represent. Even the rules were being disregarded by the council often depending on what was the most politically advantageous as well. He saw it and didn't allow it to dictate his actions in critical moments.

In a ideal combat scenario the Jedi will be disarmed or disabled their opponents with the more careful strikes, however we must remember that the Sith were the Jedi equals or their superior when it came to lightsaber combat, and in a really life or death scenario no move is beyond use. The fights that Obi Wan was facing throughout the Clone Wars were against some of the most deadliest lightsaber combatants in Galactic history and that means that he had to use every trick and ability he had when it came to these duels for him to survive.

Yeah, thats why i think the council didnt gave Obi-Wan shit for the Darth Maul thing. Decapitations are nigh Impossible to pull of in real fights, in fact, in a Sword duel its actually kinda hard to cause straight up lethal damage against an enemy thats on the same skill level, If you check some hema or kenjutsu tournaments, most duels end with a side slice, a thigh slice or some fuckup with the hands.

For the Jedi there’s a real risk of being corrupted and turning to the Dark Side for some of these, Jedi were meant to kill only as a last resort, droids not included of course. Irl though, war crimes are a thing, and that’s because certain weapons and types of weapons are considered either inhumane or too dangerous to non-combatants.
@ethansanders5706
@ethansanders5706 28 дней назад
I think it’s a perfectly reasonable guideline. Especially when you hold such power you need to be able to restrain yourself. In real life it is illegal to intentionally take non lethal shots to inflict pain, however tactically it makes sense in war as it will take more than one opponent out of the fight as someone needs to care for the wounded. Chemical weapons apply here too. They are hard to ward off and are extremely effective, but dying to them is a slow horrible experience. War isn’t a pass for cruelty but some see it as such. Therefore rules must be put in place, even in personal self defense, otherwise it is simply evil men torturing other men with a thin veil of justification.

From a biomechanics standpoint, the slice makes more sense than the stab in this instance. The problem with the stab is it leaves your saber motionless and without momentum, so if you need to block you can't. You can't really do this safely against an opponent who isn't at least staggered. And Maul was not staggered, only surprised, and his lightsaber was in a position that could have slashed him if Maul just spun to the right. By slicing instead of stabbing, Obi-Wan took the quicker route to killing him, a route that also would have allowed him to follow through and intercept any blow in progress. If you look at the angles involved, the slash would have impacted Maul's lightsaber blade AFTER bisecting him. The slash was the right choice from a combat perspective. I don't think the Jedi look at it quite as strictly as the moderator implies. I think they look at it from the perspective of, "Don't do this. It's bad. It can serve as a channel for rage and just generally generates bad press. But if it's the only option to save your life, you got to do what you got to do." The rules were put in place when the Sith were thought to be extinct; they weren't factoring in combat against comparatively-skilled lightsaber users where you need every technique available as long as you don't channel the Dark Side.

Kenobi's guilty pleasure is "breaking" the Jed Code.. Cuz apparently its only "breaking " if the enemy is sufficiently dangerous OR you get caught. REMEMBER the WHOLE Order basically used this to dismiss Dooku's execution with a Force handwave... Besides these "forbidden" specialties his "hello there" apparently is his Dun Mok attack... seemed to work on Grevious. Looked like in Ep 1 was ALSO dismissed like Anakins seeing as Young Obi was in heat of the moment an cutting him in half WAS the only real move an it was even displayed as instinctive over deliberately. Its even Maul's fault.. Even Sideous said so there.. in Mauls arrogance he lost half his body.. So apparently if its desperate enough, serious enough, or convenient enough for the Jedi/Force The Order outright ignores, or foregoes, or forgives moves like theses even accepting they WILL happen intended or not even. If it suited them

if i remember correctly from a legend novel, obi wan also somewhat befriended one of the tribes. there was one setler trying to blame the tribe in question multiple times (think it was the tribe aniken killed a lot of or one closely related to it, but been maybe 10 years since read the book in question and i cant remember the name) obi wan managed to prove the tuskens was not behind it. but i might remember things wrong.

Obi-Wan did right things during fights. He had to do this,it was battle to survive. To win. It's great he was so good with lightsaber. He used Mou Kei as mercy on Anakin. It's great how he handled Tusken Raiders. Real Jedi moves. May the Force be with you too always😊

It's interesting to note in that Tusken story that Obi-Wan showing mercy is almost a contradiction, as the Tuskens now avoided him and the Lars homestead out of fear, not respect.

Soresu is theoretically the perfect lightsaber form through which to use any (if not all) of such forbidden attacks. After all, with a near exclusive use of blocks and parries, the implementation of ___ can perfectly replace form 3's inherent occasional counters without contracting the tactics already implemented by its practitioners.

My head canon is that Kenobi was guided by the Force to use all those forbidden moves. Even if Kenobi was giving into rage, as Qui-Gon’s apprentice and a devout Jedi, Kenobi was trained to more easily fall into the Force and become a true agent of its will.

On the one hand, I get the requirement to focus on peace, mercy, and when truly necessary, a quick end, but it almost feels like every Jedi must have a few moments-glimpse into the future, or such heightened reflexes, and awareness, to always be able to analyze, plan, and execute such moves? In other verses, we'd hear things like "if you draw your weapon, you had best be ready to use it for its intended purpose", and "if you ever try to half-ass in a duel, and don't take every opportunity you have to survive, I'll kill you myself", so it seems weird for thecJedi to be SO worried, and have such almost ritualistic tenets about how to kill with a lightsaber. As a pointless aside, it's always nice to see art, and scenes, of the more Sir Alec Guiness-style Obi-Wan. So much of his content now was the Ewan McGregor motif, and as the nostalgia nut I am, it's still nice to see Kenobi as he was first introduced to me, all the way back in the 80s. 😊

It makes sense in respect to his fighting style (after he switched over from Ataru anyway), honestly. The idea of Soresu afterall is to constantly defend, waiting for the opponent to tire or make a mistake, and then take advantage of the resulting opening created and end the duel in one strike, 2 or 3 at most. Those forbidden moves, as gruesome as they are, definitely meet the requirements to finish a duel in one strike.

My opinion is that it was both the will of the force, in the case with his duel Anakin on Mustafar, and the built up stress and hardship of the Clone Wars. Witnessing how much the Jedi had changed from what he's known all his life, losing friends and loved ones and the likes of Maul goading him into unleashing his rage could also have been factors.
@Meravokas

These were moves, rules and techniques taught for peace keeping, against the value of life of others over their own. A jedi saving one person via their own death over killing to save that one person was an accepted mentality for the greater order at that time. However, when the goal is much larger, much broader, and for your own survival. These "Point" moves should be tossed aside as they only lowers the odds of their survival. In moments of great strife or desperation they are in fact, acceptably moved away from. I also believe that unless Obi-Wan told the council HOW he killed Maul in detail, that they'd know the manner in which he'd done it in the first place.

Every time Kenobi used a Sith technique in dueling it was because he was facing a superior opponent and was close to being killed. So out of desperation he reacted with a Sith technique in order to win. But I did often wonder, who trained him in those techniques. Jedi padawans were not permitted to learn them. I’m not sure Qui-Gon Jinn did. Though he was known to be a rule breaker from time to time. If I recall correctly, during The Clone Wars Kenobi fought against Durge and used the Shi-Ak strike technique. Durge just laughed after getting pierced through the chest. And slicing off his arm was no help either. He just reattached it to himself.

Lessons and rules dictated in a controlled enviroment where the worst you will suffer is a trip to the infirmary does not compare to real life or death scenarios. If your life hangs in the balance, you'll do anything to survive. Throwing sand, strike below the belt, "forbidden" blows. None of that matters if you're fighting for survival.

So i use to think that the idea of "Forbidden moves" was nonsense, being in war and everything but as I studied my Faith IRL, i actually grew to love this. The Jedi weren't suppose to be a military unit (look at the mental toll taken upon soldiers and the moral compromises they struggle to live with), the *Jedi* are a religion, one that has values, afterlife and apostasy. So the idea that the most important thing isn't, living or dying but your nature, who you are and the will of the force. The idea of the Jedi learning that there are things that you can do that draw you to the Darkside or aren't inline with the lightside of the force, they would naturally teach them and instill them as any religion does. So its actually subtle nuances like this that make the Star Wars lore stand out.

Obi-Wan had part of Qui-Gons teachings in him. It doesn't surprise me that he would use unorthodox methods and moves to finish a fight or avoid one altogether. Let's not mention Mace Windu, whom Yoda worried about constantly due to how many of Mace's Padawan's fell to the dark side.

I always felt that obi wans fighting style and general appriach to cinflict was based on Love. Sounds cheesy, but the man truly loved everyone around him, and at many points durung his time this extended to complete strangers. It also drove him to vengeance in the fight against maul, and even in the way he struck down his own apprentice, it was always out of love. He couldnt bring himself to kill Vader, and lived wirh it for the rest of his life. Even at the end, he chose love, allowing Vader to strike him down, causing the steady buildup of doubt that Vader had accumulated in his years as a sith to boil over and cloud his judgement, and eventually return to the light side. Hell he was even merciful to most droids if you look at the way he fights them. He ends them quickly, gives them thr chance to escape, or simply incapacitates them.

There are only illegal moves in monitored duels. When you fight against foes known for fighting dirty, sticking to what is "legal" will get you killed. Also if you want to get technical, him trying to take off mauls legs technically wasn't against the jedi code because maul was a robot from the waist down.

Honestly, it mostly sounds like "Because Jedi have a lot of well meaning but counter-productive rules that make them lamer fighters than their direct opposition, and defeating that opposition is ALSO part of their job.". Sure, maybe Kenobi did cut Maul in half because he was pissed, and the fact that he USUALLY goes out of his way to avoid hurting the people trying to kill him any more than he has to is one of the reasons he's my favorite. But he's also someone who recognizes the value of improvisation, occasionally even dirty tricks. One of my favorite moments in the Clone Wars cartoon is when he's undercover and we see that even though he finds blasters distasteful, he's still a crack shot. Regarding the duel on Naboo specifically, Kenobi only has a brief opening to make his strike, he has no reason to count on the guy who just killed a much more seasoned Jedi staring dumbfounded for long, and the neck is a much more precise and difficult target than the midsection. It was angry, but it was also practical. In short, because bad guys are bad, and cheating is awesome.

Such limitations in Jedi fighting was born of a era where they could afford to absolute idealists. 1000 years of almost complete galactic peace. Masters of old knew that in dire moments, sometimes the most merciful thing, is to not hold back. When death war and torment are all around. And you are all the stands between innocents, and the advance of horrific foes.. You must be both the eye, and the storm. A serene mind, with clear purpose. And a lethal force without hesitation. There is no redemption for the likes of monsters like Nihilus, Tenebrae, or the Dread Masters. Only their death ends the nightmare.

I think the best part about all the times that Obi-Wan used the forbidden moves it did not work out for the best. The first time it allowed maul to return in the Clone Wars TV Show. His strikes were either dodged or blocked during the clone wars. And with his inability to bring himself to kill Anakin on Mustafar he allowed Darth Vader upon the galaxy.
