Why Obi-Wan was Actually a lot Colder than MF’s Realise: Star Wars Tactical Breakdowns 

Obi wan is a prime example of how the worst days that life throws at us doesn’t have to break us down. This man lost his mentor, his lover, his brother and the order he devoted his life too. Yet none of these things destroyed him.

Obi-Wan is one of the most popular characters in Star Wars, even topping Luke Skywalker on some lists I've seen.

Why did Kenobi always offer his opponents a peaceful surrender? Because he had the moral high ground.

Hard to believe such an ideal Jedi was trained by a maverick of that order.

Another good point that shows off his pragmatic side, but also shows how he still doesn't compromise his beliefs is seen in both the Citadel arc and the unfinished Utapau arc. In the Citadel arc, when Master Peil died, they took time to have a funeral for him, while Obi-Wan did say they had to be quick because they didn't have much time and Peil would have wanted them to complete the mission, they still took a bit of time to give Peil a proper funeral. And on Utapau, even though he and Anakin were trying to escape with the giant Kyber Crystal, they still took time to bury the dead enemies they had killed, even when Anakin disagreed, Obi-Wan pointed out they were still living creatures who deserved some form of respect. Obi-Wan was willing to kill and sacrifice if it was absolutely necessary, but when he did, he always did so compassionately and gave the dead the respect they deserved. He did care greatly about living creatures no matter who they were.

Obi-Wan was basically perfect example of Jedi, he was not emotionless, he felt like everyone else, but he was in perfect control of those emotions. This is how he could be both kind and coldly pragmatic at the same time. Basically realizing that kindness trough most efficient manner.

Obi-wan went from being unable to properly duel against Darth Maul even with Qui-gon's help to being confident enough to jump down in the middle of an enemy base and face a cyborg wielding four light sabers.

Id like people to talk more about how they treated kenobi and skywalker as celebrities it gives new context to alot of things in the shows

Note that Sun Tsu warns that an enemy will fight harder if cornered. Offering foes an opportunity to surrender is a useful way to undercut the enemies willingness to fight. Even if the leaders refuse, the offer gets the enlosted folk thinking that maybe they dont need to fight.

Master Kenobi was a dark master of negotiation. He was so skilled he could even negotiate legs and arms off commander Skywalker.

Dude his venator being named "The Negotiator" was one of my favorite things from the clone wars! That animated series did a lot more narrative building than the prequals as far as characters are concerned.

That is how you right a good man that is also incredibly deadly. They attempt to find every alternative to fighting first, so that when the moment comes for violence they go into it with absolute ferocity and moral clarity.

Maybe it's just me, but I see Obi-Wan as a lesser version of Revan. A great strategist but on a smaller scale, a cold general willing to sacrifice but to a lesser degree. Plus he never fell to the dark side

You get a sense of this during the battle of Coruscant when he called Anakin off from helping Oddballs squadron. "They are doing their job, so we can do ours."

The Obi-Wan Thesis: or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the high ground Obi-Wan doesn't need to be on the high ground, the high ground just needs to exist within the battle; Obi-Wan knows that when he has the low ground, he really has the high ground, from a certain point of view. Look at his battle record: Maul: Has low ground, wins Dooku: No high ground, loses Dooku rematch: No high ground, loses Greivous: Has low ground, wins Vader: Has high ground, wins Vader rematch: No high ground, loses Obi-Wan with the high/low ground is canonically the most powerful Jedi. This is fact. Had Yoda not denied his request to battle The Senate with typical Jedi arrogance, Obi-Wan could have defeated Palpatine in the Senate building, which housed a variety of different altitudes; this was designed so that the Chancellor could always have the moral high ground in political debates. But Obi-wan didn't fight The Senate, and Yoda soon learned that you can't cleave the Sheev in a normal 1v1. It took the Tusken Raiders years of conflict against Old Ben Kenobi to grasp his superiority in terrain advantage, as you see them visibly flee in A New Hope when they realize he holds the low (inverse-high) ground; this was the optimal strategy against a near-invincible opponent. Yoda is shorter than virtually every other fighter, which gives him a permanent low-ground disadvantage; however, his saber-fighting style utilizes a flipping-heavy technique in order to negate this weakness for a temporary window. You'll notice that, after falling from the central podium in The Senate's building, he immediately retreats upon realizing he is on the lowest ground. You'll also notice that, while training Luke, he rides on him like a mount, to gain the intellectual high ground and accelerate Luke's training. Obi-Wan's defensive Form III lightsaber style synergizes with his careful military maneuvers; as he only strikes when prepared, he can always hold the strategic high ground. (The business on Cato Neimodia doesn't count.) You'll come to realize that this is why Commander Cody's artillery strike failed against Obi-Wan, when hundreds of Jedi were killed in similar attacks. Cody failed to grasp the strategic situation, as the Jedi Master's elevation was superior to his by hundreds of meters, making him virtually unkillable. (You'll notice that all the Jedi killed in Order 66 were on level ground with the clones, thereby assuring their demise.) Had Cody taken his time and engaged the Jedi on even terrain, he would have succeeded. Obi-Wan subsequently retreated under the surface of the lake, so that he could maintain the topographical low/high ground. This is why Obi-Wan is so willing to fight against impossible odds to the point where he thrusts himself in immediate danger; when your probability of victory is 1-to-10, you have the statistical (and therefore strategic) low ground, a numerical advantage when you use your point of view to flip the value to 10/1 . Almost losing is, in Obi-Wan's case, certain victory. As we all know, spinning is a good trick. However, only the Chosen One can spin outside of a starfighter. Palpatine tried spinning, but he lost due to this technique (but this was intentional, as losing gave him the emotional high ground when Anakin arrived). The reason for this is that spinning provides a yin-yang approach to combat (based in Eastern philosophy on balance), giving the spinner the high ground from above and below. Only the Chosen One can master the spin, as it is their destiny to maintain balance in the universe. This is why Obi-Wan was so emotional after defeating Vader on Mustafar; he expected to lose the high ground to the spin, but Anakin fell to the dark side and could no longer use his signature trick, becoming the very thing he swore to destroy. Additionally, Anakin told Obi-Wan that, from "[his] point of view, the Jedi are evil". This broadens Anakin's mind to the concept of relativity in the context of the moral high ground, a mere step away from tactical comprehension. Anakin doesn't hate sand for the reasons he told Padme; all Jedi hate sand, as the battlefield can rapidly change between low and high ground on multiple vectors, so your perspective must be from a certain three-dimensional point of view in order to comprehend who holds the high ground. This is the only reason why Obi-Wan killed Maul in Rebels. This is also the reason why Obi-Wan hates flying; there is no gravity in space, therefore there is no high or low ground from any frame of reference (This also negates the spinning trick). In ANH, Vader proves his newfound mastery by engaging Obi on perfectly even ground. However, Obi-Wan intentionally sacrifices himself on the Death Star, so that he could train Luke from a higher plane of existence, thereby giving him the metaphysical high ground. Why was Vader so invested in the construction and maintenance of the Death Star? Because he knows Obi-wan can't have the high ground if there's no ground left. As seen through the events of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan was known to be on friendly terms with Senator Organa, whose homeworld held large quantities of mountainous terrain, the perfect habitat for a Jedi Master. Grand Moff Tarkin was already in position to destroy Alderaan as a first target, as the distance from Scarif to Alderaan was too vast to reach between the escape and recapture of the Tantive IV, even at 1.0 lightspeed. Alderaan had been the initial target all along, as Obi-Wan with the high ground was the primary threat to the Death Star. How? Because a moon-sized space station would have some form of gravitational pull, thereby negating Obi-Wan's zero-gravity weakness; Obi-Wan with the perpetual high-ground in a low-orbit starfighter would easily be able to fire proton torpedoes through a ventilation shaft, although the Empire was uncertain of the specific weakness of the Death Star planted by Galen Erso (who was a good friend). In Return of the Jedi, you can see that the Throne Room contains a variety of different altitudes; Palpatine placed these there to ensure Vader's defeat. However, Sheev failed to realize that his weakness was no ground, and should have covered that useless gaping pit which does nothing. A common misconception is the idea of a 'prostrate position' version of the high ground, wherein Obi-Wan lies flat on his back, giving him tactical superiority from his point of view. However, this strategy is futile, as for the high ground to come into effect, there must be a differential between parties on both the x-axis and y-axis to a moderately significant variation from both absolutes (Angles only a Sith would deal in). For Obi-Wan's high ground powers to be in full effect, he must stand between 15 and 75 degrees (π/12 to 5π/12 radians) diagonal from his opponent(s) on any quadrant of the area circle; this has been dubbed the Trigonometric Perspective Diagram. The total effect for conventional high ground advantage can be calculated via the MetaComm Equation, or f(x) = lim 0→x π/12 | 7π/12 5π/12 | 11π/12 Ʃ(x) (2tan(x) / 3sin(x) + (log10Δ)) * cΦ Δ = distance on hypotenuse (meters) Φ = Surrounding Force [c (variable) * β (Earth Gravity) * (pressure (psi)/2.2)] 'x' refers to the angle of contact between the two parties on, with advantage being based purely on position on the Y-axis, as the vast majority of force users base their perception on elevation rather than spacial relativity. The power of gravitational force has great effect on the high ground; too weak, and the high ground holds no traction; too strong and the ground becomes the real enemy. Experimentation has proven that the high ground typically holds significant value between .8 and 1.4 β (Earth Gravities) with maximum impact standing roughly equal to 1.05. Pressure is equally important, as it is a surrounding force attached to gravity (the high ground has famously low impact in aquatic environments). Pressure(λ) is measured in pounds per square inch (psi), to be used as a gravity multiplier (or division if pressure is sub-atmospheric; Φ (Surrounding Force) is a variable defined as β * 2.2λ , with no metric value assigned due to its singular application in the MetaComm equations. In situations regarding Obi-Wan and his relativistic point of view, you must substitute the Quadrilateral MetaComm Equation (the Jedi Master function), f(x) = lim 0→x minmaxƩ (2tan(x) / 3sin(x) ) * (1.2)cΦ [min = (|cos(x)| = 1) | (|sin(x)| = 1) + π/12 ), max = (|cos(x)| = 1) | (|sin(x)| = 1) + 5π/12 ]. The viable Φ field is expanded, as Obi-Wan has taken advantage of the high ground in so many different environments that he simply uses it more efficiently, and the min/max values apply due to his multidimensional point of view, evidenced by the Trigonometric Perspective Diagram. Additionally, the distance factor does not affect Obi-Wan, as spacetime can be perseptively compressed, giving him the ideal Δ value from his point of reference. In conclusion, Obi-Wan abuses spatial relativity and Taoist doctrine in order to always invoke his high-ground powers. To properly analyze the strategic genius of Kenobi, one must hold advanced knowledge in Philosophy, Mathematics, and Calculus-based Physics, and be able to integrate these topics together.

His stint on Melidaan shaped him and his tactics. He had experience with war and was pretty skilled at it.

Video idea suggestion: Could you take a look at the various times the Jedi High Councils in different known eras made a call/decision on something major, and how many of those times their call was either the right one, or the wrong one, plus examining why they make said call. As one such person who has that kind of vibe about them, I get the feeling a lot of other people also think of the Jedi High Council as being at times rather stupid/making many serious mistakes that even at the time of making them were done with rather flimsy reasoning or any lack of basic deductive or reasoning skills. So thus It would be interesting to see how much the Jedi High Councils of various ages are actually batting, and how many balls they in reality dropped. Is it just a misconception that they were a buncha ulta orthodox bafoons, or were they actually good at their role when Sith hit the fan and an important ruling had to be made?

Ok, Just had an interesting idea re the idea that Yoda paired them intentionally (I could totally see it) from another comment. So there's the whole arc/idea that Yoda knew the end was coming via visions etc. but still let it happen. And he's also gotten a bad rap for presiding over the sith endgame and not feeling it coming sooner and or being too rulebound and old-school in the running of the order. But what if he had long since seen how it would play out (i.e. canon) vs what would happen if he did everything "right" and the bane sith were defeated and wiped out. (In legends, at least) you would have had a bureaucrat nightmare of a govt, still very divided and pacifist,with no large scale combat experience or standing military force, carrying on as usual. Enter the vong. The galaxy would have been done in maybe a year. No battle hardened (if slightly backsliding) new republic. No imperial remnant. Who knows about the other factions, hapans, etc. Maybe he saw it all, and took the path that was both jedi in its intent, and sith in its execution. (To spin it out even further, that would maybe make him the first to go back to the true je'daii path. Willing to balance the light and dark internally.) That would make the act we see in empire something like a third layer of deception. Damn. What's the world come to when you can't trust yoda?

He's the perfect example of "Keep your sword sheathed, but know how to use it"

Kenobi was absolutely ruthless when he felt it was needed. Notice in his final fight with Anakin, that he is the aggressor he ends the negotiation by staying "I will do what I must" and ignites his lightsaber first. While he does offer Anakin a chance to surrender when he has The high ground, after he severs Anakin's limbs he makes no move to save him, to bring him in for trial and justice. This is a reflection of Mace skirting the same appeal to Justice when he had the emperor at his mercy. Keep in mind that his opponent is like a younger brother to him, they have fought and bled together and Anakin has saved his life on numerous occasions. Kenobi is unfortunately the perfect Jedi he has no attachments and so there is no hesitation, no other thought than to complete the mission.

Wartime changes people, I believe Obi-Wan was a man who wanted peace over bloodshed, but he was a leader, and a Commander on the battlefield. Like many Jedi, they had to learn millitary strategy and warfare, to command both fleets as an Admiral, and a General on the field of battle. So they had to develop strategy and tactics, and for these warrior monks, that was a big thing. For Kenobi, the greater good required some grey areas to save lives. "Appear strong when you are weak, Appear weak when you are strong." - Sun Tzu.

I still have a problem withe the false surrender tactics he and Anakin used several times. I mean, yeah it saved lives but what we tend to forget is the CIS army was lead by a buch of tactical droids taht used algorithms to predict the GAR's strategies. For a few well-executed victories, how many times did those droids take real civilian or military surrenders for false ones ?

It is worth noting that in addition to forbidding his men from killing civilians or destroying their homes… but seeing a perfectly viable alternative to destruction, Kenobi opted to instead lock up the poor, unarmed droid that was tasked with cleaning one of the holding cells.

Obi wan Kenobi set the basic personality standard for how I handled situations when I was in the service and later working as a bouncer. Use absolute minimum force, try to understand people and speak with them, come to terms or solid agreements. If an agreement is not forthcoming than execute swift and brutal force in order to bring any physical altercation to an end quickly so that other people are unlikely to get hurt .

So I know it's off topic but I just finished listening to several of the ancient sith stories, where you've mentioned many different sith rituals, could you go more in depth on those? Maybe talk about why they weren't utilized by Palpatine, they seemed so useful but we don't see them enough to really know about them

I want to see a tactical breakdown of count dooku since he is regarded as a brilliant tactician and a master of makashi. I want to see how that played into his overall strategy throughout the Clone Wars.

After seeing General Grievous engaged the Jedi like Obi-wan in combats time and time again, it made me wonder why the Republic never considered invading Grievous' homeworld like at all, especially after the Battle of Coruscant. I know that the Jedi will objected, deeming this as nothing but revenge. But those like Tarkin and Yularen may be completely fine with launching an invasion of Kalee to make a payback for what Grievous did to Coruscant.

The prequels showed the Jedi in such a pathetic light that I really didn’t care when 66 came down. I viewed the Jedi as centurions of greed and not much else. They weren’t just, they weren’t smart, hell they weren’t even motivated. They were apathetic mercenaries of the status quo regardless of what that status quo was. Obi Wan had drive, curiosity, and vision. He was the perpetual student. The Jedi remind me of a Rick Rubin saying when it comes to business, “Pigs get fat. Hogs get slaughtered.” The Jedi we’re definitely hogs.

This was my favorite thing about TCW and the prequel trilogy. Obi and Anakin were stone cold military generals. Ordering deaths by the thousands. Also why I like the movie Solo. Real, adult stories of warriors and politics. As opposed to the clear cut good vs bad.

i think ahsoka was one of the most grounded characters in star wars, she had equal parts anakins tenacity and obi wans cunning . That blend of characteristics was something wholly unique in the student teacher relationships the jedi possesed up to this point. Ahsoka having her assigned master anakin who was rash and quick to act on his feet playing against his own master obi wans teaching of a more subdued tactical approach was a great dichotomy for ahsoka to see first hand and then for her to try to use both jedis teachings in tandum. Ahsoka and the collective masters had a great deal of internal conflict recollection and resolution that never felt forced it always progessed in what felt like a natural manner, the clashing teachers and an open mind trying to see why both sides could be useful is exactly why ahsoka went gray in my opinion since the start ahsoka saw the lawful good and chaotic evil of the force no wonder she hit the center.

I still think that the false surrender was a stupid idea. It looks smart and cunning at first, but this would make Separatists hesitate to accept surrender next time, which would cause many future battles and propably the whole war to be much longer and bloodier.

Can’t help but wonder in all of kenobi fights with Maul Maul respect Kenobi as an warrior despite his hatred for him.
