Djibouti, a small but extremely strategically located country in the Horn of Africa, has become the focal point for various foreign military powers since 2002 including the United States, France and China. They have the remarkable distinction of being the only country in the entire world that plays hosts to both US and Chinese military bases. In fact the two bases here are so close they could play footsies with each other, only separated by 11 kilometers or a quick 17 minute drive.
Both the United States and China are now competing for favor with the nation. Since 2009 China has been Djibouti’s largest trading pattern. The nation is now heavily indebted to China through their belt and road initiative.

Key concepts from this video: -Djibouti is small and weirdly shaped, but strategically located. -The French were the first to penetrate Djibouti. -The United States is currently all over Djibouti. -Everyone has to pay if they want to be in Djibouti. -Everything passes through Djibouti. -The Chinese have been doing naughty things in Djibouti.

Is it possible that Djibouti got its name inspiration from the musical "The Music Man"? Buddy Hacket sings these lyrics in "Shipoopi" (sounds like Djibouti) : She's the girl you're glad you found She's your shipoopi Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi The girl who's hard to get Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi But you can win her yet Shipoopi is the hard to get "Girl" (Djibouti) that many major national militaries are tying "to get". Major countries are trying to "win her yet"..... This is a great episode, illustrating how much I should know about geopolitics and yet are completely clueless about. Thank for helping me become a bit less clueless.
