The Panasonic S5II was the camera body we finally NEEDED from Panasonic. While in certain ways, they've been outperforming and outpricing other camera brands, their poor AF was always getting in the way. In this video, I talk about how the S5II is the beginning of a new rise for Panasonic and how their history can show us insight into where they are heading.

I gotta disagree about canon falling behind to Sony, considering the recent releases of the r8 , 100-300 2.8 and if ya go back further to the r6 ii and r7 and r10… other then that pretty cool video

As soon as the S1H mark 2 with phase detect comes out I'm on it. Love my g9. Panasonic ergonomics are perfect. Firmware upgrades are frequent and useful. Menu system is intuitive and perfect. Now with phase detect there is nothing better in my opinion.

It’s hard to beat now! I feel exactly the same with everything you said. AF was the only big thing frustrating about them for so long. Now they feel unstoppable!

Panasonic may be the dark horse that will surpass the bigger brands! I have the Sony a7IV; the a1 is way out of my budget. I’ll keep my eyes and ears open. Thanks!🤞🏽👍🏽

I agree!! With the new S5II they have proven themselves a big player. Sony is amazing too but can always be pricey 👌

I have a G85. Do you think I should spring for the S5-II for wait for a more wildlife centric full frame body from Panasonic? Alternatively, should I wait for a G9 replacement and stick with micro four thirds?

It depends if you can wait! The S5II is plenty capable, for it's price point, you'll really be pushing it to get any better. What Panasonic comes out with next may take a little while and definitely will cost more but it might be worth it. Personally, I think if you have the money you should go full frame, but if you need something more affordable a G9 replacement may be right for you :)

Currently the cannon r series smokes everything else in value. An r8 which retails for 2000 CAD will out preform all but a flagship from any other brand (unless you need high mps). It’s good to see more competition but Panasonic is still way behind the big 3 in terms of lens selection.

The S5II outperforms the R8 on a sheet of paper and in real life, I’d encourage you to compare them side by side ☺️ but yes in terms of lens selection, Panasonic is behind in the wildlife photography industry, but honestly Canon is a little behind at the moment too for their mirrorless mount (their EF to RF adapter is too slow to use for wildlife photography). Nikon has produced more, and Sony definitely has the best lineup for wildlife photographers.

The current cannon mirrorless lineup is the best in nearly every category. Dual pixel af on even the r10 or r8 is better then all the other brands af. Lowlight performance on the r8 will match/beat the $500 more expensive s5ii. Only real advantage of s5ii is ibis and 3fps faster mechanical shutter. The r6 would beat the s5ii in both of those category for the same price and you only lose 4mps. Also, native ef glass can be adapted very well onto the rf mount (you will run into problems adapting smt like the sigma 150-600).

S5ii autofocus with sigma 100-400 dgdn is very bad. I regret this purchase and will switch for another brand asap...
