I just had thyroid surgery last week. In March my physician's assistant kept telling me that there was nothing wrong with me despite a large lump on my neck and problems breathing and swallowing. Between march and april I went to her at least 4 times. She finally did an ultrasound. It showed multiple large nodules on my thyroid. At my post op Dr's visit yesterday my surgeon said the right lobe of my thyroid was about the size of his fist and wrapped around my trachea. Advocating for myself probably saved my life. Thank you for all of your videos Dr Kaveh, tbey really helped me leading up to my surgery.

I have experienced that more than once. It is sometimes difficult to stand up for yourself when you are being told that there is no evidence that there is anything wrong. I had a carcinoid tumour in my lung for two years before it was found. During that time, many, many tests came back negative. Some would make it very clear that they thought that I was just bored and looking for attention!!

I was diagnosed with adult onset asthma and put on asthma inhalers. I got worse. I asked the doctor if it could be a food allergy. He said, NO, and refused to test me for them. As soon as I could afford to, I paid out-of-pocket to go and be tested at a Naturopathic clinic. They discovered I had a severe allergy to eggs, and that I'd been experiencing mild anaphylactic shock, NOT asthma!!!! My decision to go to the Naturopathic clinic probably saved my life!!!

My Dr friend says I'm a "bad patient" 😅😂 I asked why, and she replied because I know as much as doctors do 😂 well, I wouldn't say that, but I do have to admit I do my own due diligence by listening to my gut and researching possible reasons for whatever is going on, and then present that to the Dr. She said she wished everyone would talk more about what they truly felt was going on in their bodies, not just leaving it all for a dr to figure out. After all, nobody knows better their bodies than people themselves do, they should just pay more attention to any changes going on 😊

Dr I have been honest with my doctor and it doesn’t help. I have extra skin from losing over 100 pounds and I have break out under breast, stomach, thighs, and buttocks skin folds and the doctors I’ve seen doesn’t advocate for me properly with insurance to get skin removal covered. I am 66. I have friends in their 50’s and younger that insurance paid for their skin removal. I think past 60 we seem to be written off. I still work full time and take care of myself. It’s depressing that I have friends that have been helped but me… no help. I’m a medical biller. I work hard but seem to be disregarded while insurance covers others not only for skin removal but also for gender change. I’m losing my faith in some medical professionals. Thank you for your information. You always make sense.

I recently had an appointment for a surgeon because I was told I needed surgery. His staff was so rude and sarcastic. Then my appointment got canceled the same day! Yes, Friday before Labor Day. I called the following week, tho my instinct said if his staff is rude, he most likely will be. Sure enough. Rude, sarcastic, and God complex. Fortunately, I didn't need surgery because I wouldn't have gone with him. I didn't feel my health care was his priority, and I was not looked at as an equal adult. Thank you for educating us!

Sometimes surgeons cancel appts because other surgeries need to be done like a patient getting diagnosed with cancer. My colorectal cancelled 3 appts before I got to see him. I was always sad when he cancelled because I knew that meant the patient he was operating on was so sick they couldn’t wait. Clinic days would get converted to surgery days for patients like that.

Dr. Kaveh, thank you for educating us! I wrote a very long comment and lost it. Short version: A scientist in almost your area (San Diego) Stephanie Venn-Watson has brought an amino acid, C-15, to the attention of scientists. She has been studying dolphins for the Navy off the CA coast and another pod off the FL coast. She found major differences between the pods and attributes them to C-15 amino acid. This C-15 has always been there but no one paid it any attention once the omega threes came on the scene. Turns out the C-15 is very important. Our bodies don't manufacture it, we must ingest it. I have asked my Dr. to read up on C-15 so we can discuss next month at my visit. You may find the papers out there interesting too. I think I feel very comfortable communicating with my Drs. I'm diabetic, have severe spinal stenosis and have afib. so, I've been around Drs for a while. Thank you for encouraging people to stand up for themselves!

This video is spot on! Couldn’t figure out why I was suddenly feeling worse as each day went on in August through today. I had a prescription filled in August, same prescription I’ve been taking but noticed it was a different manufacturer. Thus far, it seems I was having an adverse reaction to the manufacturer of this specific medication. I’ve been reading up on how manufacturers fillers can differ & cause an adverse affect on some of us. From my previous research, they have been consistently changing. I went through all my meds & manufacturers, they’ve only differed with certain medications. My roommate keeps saying just go to a different doctor, I will but I need the information to know what to discuss with a new doctor, even my current doctor. A doctor has switched an anti anxiety med a few years ago, it gave me an adverse reaction, I had a seizure in the ER from that one.

I just got home from surgery. Been listening to you for weeks before and I want to say thank you. I explained the confidence, certainty and control thing and they allowed me to have some control in holding the mask. I already had the confidence in them as a team. The certainty was impossible under the circumstances but… I did speak to the anesthesiologist beforehand and I told him that if there was any wiggle room or if a judgment call needed to be made, which way I wanted him to go. And he did! I could have woke up with a sternum to pelvis incision or a laparoscopic robotic surgery with 6 small incisions. Bc of comorbidities I was at high risk for not having the robotic surgery. But the advocacy and the prayers of myself, my PCP, my family and friends, all made it happen. Thank you for your part in helping me be strong enough to advocate for myself in strength and respect. I do have more control over my health care. Thank you for helping me realize that in my life.

I have learned the hard way to always listen to my instincts. My neighbor was in a very bad accident and his arm was being held together with a halo and pins. The whole arm. I was helping his wife take care of him and cleaning it etc.,,, One afternoon I was home and thought I heard a yell, but thought I was just nuts. He had fallen and I don't know how I heard him yell. It was winter and my house was closed up. I did consider him for a sec but just thought I was hearing things. It happened again but I was in the shower and thought I heard a yell, but faint like the other time. My husband was outside and had fallen. I will never ignore what I think I've heard or felt again.

This just happened to a wonderful friend. I am 71 years old and have known her since Under Grad days. When she had a clean colonoscopy at age 60 her physician told her she would not need another. When she turned 70, with no symptoms what so ever, she decided to schedule a colonoscopy. Her insurance covered it, so why not do it? She was diagnosed with "invasive" cancer. She is about to have part of her colon, etc, removed in two weeks.

I had a hysterectomy a few days ago at a teaching hospital. I advocated for myself.. told everyone who would listen that i wanted no students in the room.. asked for senior staff only. because in michigan it is legal for students to do vaginal/rectal exams on patients without their consent or knowledge. I begged everyone. plz dont let this happen to me.. when i came home and logged into my patient portal later on.. My surgeon had put in my notes that i did verbally consent to exams.. I never saw him that day.. at least not until I was under Versed.. and they had me in the OR for 90 minutes under Versed before they anesthetized me and began prepping and positioning my body. So Im curious what they were doing to my amnesic body for that hour and half because I dont remember.. there is no accountability in an OR.. advocate for yourself or dont.. it doesnt matter cuz they are just unethical immoral jerks. They consider it a win win if you make it out of surgery alive.. doesnt matter if not knowing what happened to you in there makes you want to shoot your self.

There is a difference in you saying no to med students and you saying no to your surgeon. I doubt they had a med student touch you after you said no. I’m not a doctor but all of my surgeries have required something similar to what you mentioned. My colon surgery required a cystoscopy and two sigmoidoscopies. My myomectomy required a cystoscopy and she did do some kind of pelvic something or other. You should ask your surgeon if you are worried about what they did. I’m confused about the 90 minutes in the OR without anesthesia. Why would they have you in there that long before starting the surgery? OR time is insanely expensive and hospitals don’t like to waste the time. I remember going to the OR and once I was on the table anesthesia started preoxygenating immediately so they could knock me out.

I always forget what I want to say at appointments, especially if the appointment is a month away. Knowing myself, I'll write down a list of bullet points and sometimes write out the issues in full so I don't forget at the doctor's office. I made a list one time of irritating issues for a therapy session, and I told my therapist this. She said, "Well let's go down the list you have." At first, I was caught off guard, as we always exchanged a few pleasantries first, but I recovered, and we did address my list. I was disconcerted, but I was glad it happened that way. It pointed out a few things: first, writing down issues and even keeping a health diary or journal is useful. Second, it can be scary to discuss issues with my doctor even though I know I need to for the best care. And third, sometimes the care can be as disturbing as the disease.

I've done exactly this on paper and on notes on my cell phone. The bullet points, underlines, bold fonts are key - in my case it's for medical appointments; for therapists, I end up changing them because most I've met tend to want to go down one track and can't get switch topics. I've been through about 10, so many are wounded healer archetypes.

Going through this now. I love my doctor but a 15 minute appointment was far from enough. These are the highlights. I have been having significant pain since two falls in January/Feb. Second fall broke both ankles (one a spiral break and one only a bone chip). Fast forward to May, sciatica, and a diagnosis of early degenerative scoliosis. So last week I saw the doctor because I still have so much pain in my legs. She distracted me from my lovely pen and paper list and started with my low resting heart rate and flow murmur. Then it went sideways. She ended up diagnosing the pain as IT Band syndrome. I don’t think it is for many reasons. It could be, but it doesn’t make sense and doesn’t explain the pain in the other leg. It might be that and something else. Then I forgot to ask what pain meds I can take. Now I’m surviving on large doses of Tylenol. It takes a month to get even a phone appointment. Honestly, I cry a lot. I don’t know what to do at this point. I think I’ll wait and see if the office phones about the MVC result. If they don’t call (it was only one point out and the bilirubin was 1 point under - probably the Tylenol) I’ll go to urgent care and cry some more and see if there’s a different painkiller that will get me through the night (it’s worse at night). Sorry so long. Thanks for the encouragement!

15 minutes? I've never received even 5 minutes each time, with two (work comp) surgeons. After reading all of your post? It sounds even more familiar. Sometimes I feel like they're just waiting for something else to kill me because the don't like to treat pain. It's too risky.

@@terrilynn6039 I’m so sorry that’s happening to you… to us! I’m in Canada so it is different here. Normally my doctor is really good. I keep going over what went off the rails and I think I figured it out. First, I had a telephone appointment in May that was handled by a resident doctor (my doctor works with the medical school to help foreign doctors get Canadian credentials). I should have declined! 🤦‍♀️ The resident was fine but kept having to go back to the doctor to figure things out. She seems to have got stuck on my sciatica and not my hip pain so I may not have been properly entered into the history. Second, when I saw my doctor in person last week I had my list but that got derailed because of two other problems I went to Urgent Care about (I live an hour and a half ferry ride from my doctor). Next time I’m going to hand her a copy of the list so we both have a list and can get through it. I think that might work. My daughter also suggested an “imaginary friend” who told you something and you are wondering about it because it makes sense. This is if you’re shy to say “I don’t think you’re right”. I have a friend who is a nurse with a kinesiology degree and a personal training certificate. It’ll be easy to say she doesn’t think I have IT Band Syndrome (usually a sports injury elite athletes get) but might have Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome. GTPS is really a perfect fit. It often results from a fall. I hope you get some help too.

I've had moderate to severe pain in my upper left abdominal area for over 8 months now, and I've had MRIs,CTscans, and ULTRASOUND, & they can find nothing. Absolutely NOTHING WRONG!.My nurse practitioner has now sent me to a GASTROENTEROLOGIST after I asked her for a 2nd opinion. I really hope that they will be able to find SOMETHING. I'm in pain constantly. And I wonder why the other techs can find nothing.?

I don't think you can train instincts. You can train to recognize fishy patterns, though. Perhaps it's this pattern recognition that spurs doubt, which can get you to ask questions and research a bit? You can train to be a pest and ask questions, though that might take some therapy. Or you can practice being assertive. You can't really do it at command and according to the concepts of being assertive.

@KxNOxUTA
@KxNOxUTA 3 дня назад
@@AlexM-jd2roThere's more nuance in between "not doing anything" and "dtag ppl before court", Alex. First, get support and have a mature talk with the doctor in question. You'll be surprised how often they're actually able to improve and show to have been unaware of the problem. They're people. We know that people react poorly to extremes. Nothing gets better by showing all of society that "You're either perfect or screwed". In order to get teachable doctors, it must be safe for them to make mistakes and have a safe conversation about it and a solid chance to improve. It's an absolute fairytale, that anything improves in society by jumping to rage. Not how humans work. Ofcourse there are humans who have very solid psychological struggles, suchbas narcissistic behaviours (we're not even speaking of clinically relevant degrees and diagnosis). But not all people making a blunder are automatically that. We must put in the effort as societies to do the work of checking what we're working with, person to person, instance to instance. There's no shortcuts when it comes to individual humans, Alex! And "easy answers" tend to have poor long term outcomes. We gotta stop running away and equip patients who got mistreated, with SOCIAL experts to do the advocating with the aim to help not just the patient but also the doctor. That spectrum of help can include reaching the conclusion that some doctors aren't safe to work as such asnd hurt others AND themselves that way. But that should always be the last step. Not the first response to an issue. Be kind! Be what you wished they had been for you!
