The community started to use it more, learn how to use it, and develop new skills. What was thought to be a bad weapon by many was actually good and became meta later
@@mexicanhonokait's because both it and cooler were buffed, and then cooler became the meta special that every team needs to run 1 of. Pencil and cooler at launch were terrible.
I love how Pencil went from this "Garbage weapon", back when Chill Season 2022 dropped, to this op weapon that needs a nerf because it's too good lmfao.
I dunno...after the nerf it got with the advent of technology and the keyboard, it's taken a big hit. I've even seen top writing players prefer the pen over pencil in the academia meta. It still dominates low level school meta though. The the mechanical pencil has even taken a lot of space there in the western servers though. Nerfing pencil again seems like overkill to me, but interesting to hear your opinion!
i’ve found the pencil to be better in terms of expression, but the pen is much more efficient, but is less expressive due to the high skill floor; you can’t make too many mistakes with it
Nerf: make the pencil more realistic: -When you charge your shot, there's a 40% chance your pencil comes out of the sharpener unsharpened (your charge simply doesn't work and you have to charge again) -When you fire a shot, there is a 20% chance your pencil tip breaks (you lose the rest of your shots and you have to charge again) -When you superjump, your pencil gets rattled, the graphite inside might get damaged, (increase the above numbers by 10 each, stacks until you die) -Compensation buff: tacticooler is now 180p (for legal reasons this is a joke)
because it doesn’t have any oppressive options with its kit to help defend itself. sensors are good for hitting people over walls but it’s not going to change the rabid bloodthirsty splattershot barreling towards your location at 1000 mph. what’s your next option in that scenario, oh! an ink storm. you throw it down and he runs straight through it and splats you. explosher needs a kit where it can actually fuckin defend itself not only against frontline weapons, but backlines and specials as well. chargers and splatlings have a quicker TTK and just delete explo because of how much slower it is at splatting people. the weapon is instantly invalidated when an enemy is in the air (inkjet) or on grates and the fact that a direct hit doesn’t 1 shot makes it so sluggish to use. it just gets constantly beamed by every special in the game because it does not have the speed/damage to deal with them
Bamboo needs bugfixes badly. Explosher, Bamboo, and Naut need competing, good, team-supporting kits. The reason 5H rules right now is because the semi-mobile backlines from 2 ain't got anything to do in S3
@@Flame_from_HR Naut's kit is strong but Naut flexes between anchor and Frontline due to how the main weapon works. And it doesn't compete with 5H in terms of paint, nor is storm anywhere near as strong a special as cooler. It's not a "competing" kit.
@@stevieie2837 naut doesn’t really anchor unless it’s the slowest weapon on the team and sensor and storm support the team well, but, yeah, they aren’t very strong on their own. I do, however, disagree about how the kits should compete with things like zap and edit for soda because having an insane main weapon compete with worse main weapons for the niche those worse mains have kinda kills weapon diversity
honestly I think the main issue here is that cooler is broken as hell and snipewriter is able to perform role compression with it. "support" (as the community defines it) will only ever be cooler spam in this game until cooler is nerfed into the ground
I'm so glad someone addresses this. Pencil is so ubiquitous because it is the only long range cooler option, and most supports outside of cooler spam bots aren't really considered.
I think if you do that then the support roll collapses, Z+F stocks bounce back. I’d say a very slight nurf and large buffs to other support specials would probably go over better.
Explosher with a good special (crab tank) would add a lot of diversity, help it immensely with its bad matchups, and be a strong back line that can hold its own well It’s such a nice weapon to use, this needs to happen
@@greyiscarrotI think Crab is more likely a long with sprinkler or a random new sub. because some baller weapons in Splatoon 2 such as splat dualies and l3 nozzle nose was replaced by crab. Also the fact that crab only has one new kit and there are only a few 2nd kits left to make it seems very probable that custom explosher will get crab + sprinkler. Maybe they would give it a different sub since sprinkler already has way too many kits so I'm thinking they might give it squid beacon or angle shooter. Angle shooter would actually be really good with explosher, it likes to be at a distance perched up and angle shooter could be a combo tool for explosher
@@greyiscarrot I would take that as well I think zooka would really help it stay alive since it’s one of the only specials that can act as a panic button (that is also good)
@@QwertyS3Yeah dart is fucking nuts on it, I’ve felt this way since RPD came out It would easily have the best synergy with it out of all the dart weapons in the game
I think a paint nerf would be a good way to nerf this weapon. It might need another small nerf on top of it (like maybe a charge time nerf, or just a nerf to Cooler), but nerfing the paint would be a great way to encourage more active gameplay and less of the paint bot playstyle.
@@unluckify1the range gives it less power over other back lines, and it would be by a very small amount, just make it splat charger instead of splatterscope
@marisstaff7019 Nah, the paint nerf is enough, we don't need 210p. (especially on top of a range nerf, too) All 3 of those combined would definitely be overnerfing the weapon
I loved this weapon since it came out and have loved to see it be used competitively. But I agree it’s over centralizing, if I had to nerf it I’d probably reduce its range to match other unscoped chargers
I love anchor, I love long range, I love providing paint support, and I love giving chip damage for teammates to play off of. But I'm awful at pencil. This meta is a terrible purgatory for me.
How do you suggest it gets nerfed? Because many backlines have fallen off, and we see more backless comps because of that. I personally think they should buff many other backlines instead.
Nerf the range to make it less than splaterscope and nerf the width of its paint bands (or increase the points for special to reduce the Cooler output).
@@crashur3600 cooler is bad for the game, but as of now fixes most things bad with the game. Also, if we do nerf cooler, it has a terrible kit, and a mediocre kit, with both kits having the same paint bot play style.
I think that a nerf that could be done that deals with it pretty well while also keeping the good aspects it supports (frontline diversity in team comps) would be to add a automatic charge time to each shot that affects the range. If you spam fire, youre getting a bunch of shorter range shots, but if you wait around half a second (or whatever amount of time) before each shot you get current pencil range. Also the first shot in a charge is instantly max range. This makes it have worse burst paint and cooler output, while still maintaining the ability to paint and use cooler, just slower, while its damage is relegated to chip and duels with other backliners instead of a quick 2-shot if youre good at aiming.
i'm a midline slayer for my team (primarily 96deco, fsqueezer, and rapid deco) and i can say that i have the luxury of choosing what i like but my support players are struggling rn
As long as these considerations are in Zones only, then I'll regard them as flawed because it takes only the very best environment in which Writer 5H works: as a charger main, I'd never bring it outside Zones or, if I'm feeling particularly confident in that moment and the map rotation allows it, Clam. At best you can either apply two changes: - raise its ink consumption for a full charge to 45-47% of the tank so that while its strengths are basically unchanged, you increase the amount of carefulness and ability players need to apply to effectively be useful to the team, otherwise you are just wasting shots and increasing your downtime; - increase special points to 220p so to reduce the amount of Coolers you can deploy. Generally speaking I'd focus more on Cooler instead, which is an argument more game relevant (and that was talked about already): yes, it allowed for more variegated teams, but it needs nerfs on some aspects that basically remove the punishment for getting splatted. You want to limit Writer 5H? Stop playing exclusively Zones. That or we start talking about nerfs to other weapons that set the terms in other modes.
@@flango348 Because he has ranked all the weapons, subs, specials and stages referring to a competitive Zones only environment, so clearly we have a baseline of his point of view; furthermore outside of Zones, Writer 5H usage drops because other backlines are more useful especially in Rainmaker and Tower. Of course 5H remains a solid option even outside of Zones, but you can't say you need to nerf it because it is not nearly as dominant as it is in Zones. As I said in my comment, at best you can increase its special points to reduce the special output, but outside of that, 5H is fine as a weapon. Nerf Cooler instead.
@@flango348 4:56 "Vjet could also be a thing for Zones" (talking about possible alternatives if 5H couldn't be used). 5:59, 6:08, 6:19 "I'm gonna paint the *zone* and shoot at people" said multiple times while comparing weapons. 6:45 "But it's really good at painting" (referring to 5H). And not a single mention to other modes.
I'd love to see chargers as a whole reworked in a similar way to your suggested video, but as for weak backlines (and two midlines), I have some buff ideas! Explosher - Lessened endlag after a shot, and slightly faster projectiles (maybe a small paint nerf to the explosion if it ends up too strong, say 5%?) Bamboozler - Just let it actually paint a solid line up ramps Nintendo please... Tri-Stringer and Reeflux - +20% increased paint droplets on fully charged shots, with a 10% increase on first-ring shots and increasing the paint output as it charges like Chargers do instead of decreasing it because of the narrowing the spread for some reason. Basically every backline except Firefin and Vpencil - Give them actual kits please nintendo :) And for fun, Midlines: H-3 - +10% increased shot speed, and a universal buff for accessibility both Dash-3's should get hold fire like Blasters have, while on Squeezer and brushes tapping the button twice in quick succession (3rd of a second window, maybe?) then holding the button will cause the tap shot mode on Squeezer and the flick mode on brushes to happen in auto fire at the max input speed (maybe slightly reduced fire speed on Inkbrush and Squeezer, the latter especially) Tenta Brella - Lessened endlag and white ink after a shot, plus a change that'd be nice for all brella class weapons would be less endlag and being able to cancel shots and go into squid form without getting major white in frames.
I would say just nerf the max fire rate of Squeezer, adding an accessibility fix but then still making it worse than fully mashing just sounds really crappy.
@@SuspiciousTemmie Maybe I worded it poorly; the overall fire rate WOULD be nerfed, for both tapping and holding the button after activating it. Same goes for Inkbrush, though I don't see it being as bad as everyone running around with max tap speed squeezers.
Slap higher special points on it. Like highest or second highest. It'll either be forced to get involved in fights, or be dropped for another easier cooler option.
I mean the only reason people want it nerfed is because it's got a good kit. When the first pencil came out people weren't complaining about how fast it could get storm. It's not the pencils fault that Nintendo gave it the only good kit. Even if they nerfed it's paint it can still shoot 5 shots which is 4 more than every other charger and automatically more paint anyhow. The movement speed nerf could do something but like you said in the video people play it because it can paint well. So it either ends up staying where it is and nothing happens or it gets nerfed to oblivion and there's point in playing the weapon at all.
I feel like the best way to take care of this would be a painting and range nerf: - less paint = less Cooler - less paint = less “paint zone and maybe hit people” mentality - less range = V-Charger doesn’t just lose because of range Even if this kills pencil, I feel like the meta would be healthier as a result. If we wanted to keep it viable but shift it to a more healthy playstyle, I have a diffferent, albeit pretty drastic idea: - keep paint/special output the same - significantly nerf range (somewhere between V-charger and Squiffer) - give it the ability to hold charges (holding the button would retain the charge, releasing while swimming would refund the ink as normal) I feel like a mid-line support that paints decently but still loses to backline would be a lot healthier, for the meta. This is actually would I initially thought Snipewriter would be when I first heard of a high strafe speed charger that charges several shots at once
I remembered the days when this weapon came out everyone threw it out the window as a bamboo clone with a terrible kit that can't push it's advantage or protect itself. I mained it just cuz of that, and it has such a cool design. And just like the bamboo, it chips and combos (with more reward of getting more shots in because of its mobility.) (For some reason I found that an amazing design for a sniper lol) Of course, tacticooler would be buffed as well as the writer in later patches 👀 At the time, I thought snipewriter would be a sniper that "tried" to play more aggressively as a support and rush in with tacticooler for itself to take shots with its already combined movement speed. Snipers too already have much more ease taking shots with the map design especially E-liter (of course, Tacticooler would later influence the speed of the game, several backline weapons would see less use). But id never imagine it would develop such a cheesy and oppressive playstyle 😔 (not the weapon entirely itself, but when it comes to comps). Oh well. (Btw, I made this comment before the video. So I could be incorrect about somethings. I just play the weapon)
Yeah as an ex e-liter main I dropped it cause not only is it's kit useless but e-liter at this point, is straight up designed for a way slower game. Every time I try to go back to it I feel like I'm trying to force Splatoon 2's slow methodical gameplay in Splatoon 3's aggression favored ecosystem. And this honestly just applies to every non paint-bot backline right now.
I remember being so happy to see people start using pencil for the first time months back, but when I see it… in every game… and it’s the reason people aren’t picking other weapons… it kind of gets repetitive…
Maybe reduce the per shot damage down to 65 or make the charge time take longer. Or make cooler cost more. I think Hydra Splatling should be buffed tho bc I think that could compete with Pencil as a backline support weapon.
Just reduce the Cooler output by increasing the cost to 220p: outside of Zones, this weapon isn't as good as they say. About Hydra, I think that along with Heavy Splatling and Tri-Stringer (the latter if they don't intend to introduce a longer-ranged bow weapon), they'd need a range buff on their second charge level, so that they can become alternatives to Chargers and Ballpoint.
Pencil recieved +8 damage per shot in 3.1.0, a 13% ink efficiency buff + 13% movement speed buff in 4.0.0, and cooler was giga buffed. Pencil is arguably the most buffed weapon in this game other than maybe wiper?
@@zoninkspl6597 90% of the value it gets is in cooler though. It got a second kit and I feel like no one even acknowledges its existence because it's so aggressively mid.
Okay I was about to be like NO PLEASE NO because I’ve mained pencil pretty much since it launched but I do think that the paint needs to be toned down a bit. It does get pretty boring playing this in comp because I really just don’t do much outside of paint. As long as the buffs are minimal and make the weapon more fun without completely destroying it I’m fine.
Pencil still needs a sense of identity- but right now, it has too many identities. It's running as a backline, long-range painter, AND support. I think it could keep the long-range painting, but it should maybe get an increase time delay between each of its five shots. This is coming from a pencil main btw, and while I'm perfectly happy standing in Narnia while painting the zone, it does get a little boring.
Random thought, but on rainmaker and with proper set up, v blob is op. This thing is dps. Sprinkler isn’t great, but it’s extra, storm is ok, but it’s extra and big. And we all know blob’s dps once it gets going.
Another random thought, but I think pfs should be mapped to kits, not just main weapons because maybe a weapon doesn’t have a sub that paints well, or it’s special is so bad it could get more. Main is better than the special itself because more diversity and easier balancing.
As a formerly garbage weapon now buffed into meta, I feel like the devs are gonna take the Trizooka route and nerf it *slightly*. Rather, maybe what the devs should do is to buff other weapons or introduce new kits that'll just be too appealing.
Tbh, pencil feels great. We need more backlines to be buffed and have good kits. Eliter doesn’t have a good kit, Jett squelcher doesn’t have a good kit, hydra can’t compete, neither can explo. I wish we had burstbomb with a usable special on jetsquelcher again. I miss s2 jet, that was fun.
It's funny how people were calling this a really bad weapon when it came out and now it needs nerfs. How times have changed. Realistically I think the most I see the devs doing is nerfing the paint. Maybe not much, but it's still something.
If I had to give my opinion on pencil nerfs it would be these: Make 210p Decrease range to unscoped splat charger (maybe more if still too strong) Increase charge time slightly to reduce paint spam Give a charge hold that removes shots in the clip either over time or after entering and exiting squid form
Nerfing pencil also makes my team backless with squeezer and hedit so much nicer to play so i don’t care if the weapon get the Splatoon 1 top tier to splatoon 2 treatment
what if we fix other backlines and anchors instead? make other anchor/backline options the meta amongst main weapons. seriously now it feels like pencil is the only anchor that really works. heck even other chargers have problems like painting (bamboo). or if hydra actually worked competitively.
@@df63vu3f73k I'm not saying it's good, I just said decent, it's not the worst thing ever. Also mine helps reduce the amount of hits you need for it to kill.
I believe the issue with pencil isn’t so much the main weapon as it is the special weapon. The buffs that the main weapon has received between release and now weren’t enough to make It powerful, we see this in the alt kit which is just kinda mediocre. It was really the buffs to cooler that made this weapon meta. If nintendo kills pencil we’ll just see the next best cooler weapon be placed on every single team. Similarly to what happened to Kunder when it was broken in splat2, Nintendo killed it and everyone switched to zap because it was the next best armor weapon.
As a midline and backline player, I couldn’t agree more. I also don’t want to nerf weapons unless it is absolutely necessary, but in this case Pencil is just too good. It completely ruins backline and support weapon diversity, and even though there are other good weapons that serve a somewhat similar role to Pencil like Z+F, Bamboo, Liter and Ballpoint, they’re all weapons that you CAN use, not weapons that you would pick over Pencil in the vast majority of situations. It’s certainly possible to use other backline weapons, but they’re very rarely actually better than Pencil. I play quite a bit of SendouQ, and whenever I play I never ask “should I go Pencil or Bamboo”, it’s always “Are you fine if I go Bamboo instead of Pencil” because realistically speaking Pencil is the better option nine times out of ten. Bamboo is a weapon I would rather play, but unfortunately it just gets mostly outclassed by Pencil. I would love a Pencil nerf because it would allow me to play the weapons I enjoy more, without having to know that I could be playing a better weapon.
but i dont want my favorite weapon to be nerfed i love being a cooler bot quick serious edit: i was a bp 1trick for as long as i could remember. i ended up dropping bp about a month ago due to how awful it feels in the current meta. as much as i absolutely love the weapon, i just cant play it anymore in comp. as of now, ive been a pencil/ntri 2trick (mostly playing ntri bc backless is fun) and it makes me really sad bc i honestly dont have as much fun as i did with bp, even if pencil is currently my favorite weapon
I left the game in the end of sizzle and it was trash came back end of drizzle and it apparently like op now and I’m just like “huh????” Cause I’m use to it being trash but now it’s like OP DPS WITH GOID COOLER OUTPUT and I’m just so confused lol next thing you know undercover is gonna be like quad undercover like what happened
I feel like the biggest reason there's no other backlines being played isn't because pencil is too good, it's because the devs just refuse to let other backlines be good, refuse to give them more kits, and refuse to let the kits they have get support options that are as easy to build around as pencil. E-liter, hydra and explosher all somehow still only have one kit, explosher and tri-stringer are just doomed to be gargbage forever, and no other backline has tools to support three hyper-aggro slayer weapons as well as pencil does (its the only one with cooler and none of them have beacons either which I feel would be just as good). Admittedly I also just don't like playing pencil, so it's hard for me to really see it being that absurdly good that it needs big nerfs. But I feel even if it did get nerfed, backline variety would still be awful until other backlines get buffed or get better kits. You don’t pick pencil because it's this insanely oppressive sniper, you pick it because it's the only backline with cooler, and unless we do something about cooler then the main weapon will still offer than no matter how you nerf it.
Keep in mind this video comes from the competitive scene, which relies on Zones only rulesets: outside of it, counting every other mode, Writer 5H is not as good as they say and other weapons can fit way better than it. It doesn't need all these nerf because it doesn't consider the full picture.
