"Millions of fans have grown up with Taylor Swift since she released her first eponymous album at 16 years old. But many people are beginning to see through her wholesome pop singer image, and her new single, "Look What You Made Me Do," is catalyzing that reaction. But for survivors of domestic violence, the song isn't just an anti-feminist pop jingle: "Look What You Made Me Do" utilizes a vocabulary of abuse that for many people is deeply, traumatically familiar.
I will admit that I have never been a Swift fan, however I do like to give all women the benefit of the doubt. When I first heard about the song I thought perhaps the song's catchphrase, "look what you made me do," was a diatribe against Swift's supposed victimization by the media, or other musicians, perhaps a clever tongue-in-cheek trope, because how could a woman write it any other way?”*

As a musician myself I totally understand why, there was deeper meaning to this, I know what my music means to me, not all artists just crap out songs and videos, some of us actually put thought and emotion and creativity into it, we plan it all out in our heads before we do, all of my songs have a personal meaning to me, what ever meaning other people derive from some of them is another thing though, but in the case of other songs the meaning is so clear most wouldn't miss it, as a musician I enjoyed the novelty of this video because I analyze music as well to see what kind of creative image is being painted.

J B Too right! I don't think it's fair to hijack certain phrases, apply the most negative connotation to it and then say that the song is triggering. You could do that with anything. It's a bloody metaphor. She is both the killer and the victim in the video. She had to kill the old versions of herself. I don't even listen to her music or like her at all, but I watched the video and I got it. People hating on her are just looking way to deep into it. If youd don't like the words then don't listen that song. Eminem writes about domestic violence all the time, and people does not complain. I really don't think she was making a jab at domestic violence victims. She could have chosen other words, but she didn't. After all this the song just broke records in RU-vid, so you just helped her to earn more money, so all the hate didn't work the way they wanted.

Being angry for being abused is not a bad image to portray and I think Taylor Swift deserves a little bit of leeway since she just sued that groping DJ for $1, not hundreds of thousands or more. So, I think everybody needs to back off and let her express herself in the genuine way that she usually does. "Look what you made me do", is a classic abusers line. It doesn't have to be a trigger for anyone who has lived with abuse, like myself.

Freedom of speech, she's an artist and that's what artist do, they entertain. She's been blessed with talent, country, pop, what ever she does she seems to make it work. I really don't see how someone can be offended by the title unless they're a more reactionary person who only read the title and didn't read the lyrics or watch the music video. The songs clearly not pro domestic violence and you'd understand that if you understood what she was talking about in the song and what she was referring to with the symbolism in the video. You being a victim of domestic violence doesn't validate you're wrong assumption(s) about the video. You can only be offended by the title in that way if you take the title out of context.

What I find interesting is that, when an abuser says, "look what you made me do" they are shifting blame so they don't have to take responsibility for their actions. When Taylor Swift says it, she's essentially doing the same way. The phrase is the utter antithesis of empowerment. Rather than saying "*I* have *decided* to do this", it's " look what *you* MADE me do". As if to say she was manipulated into doing it, and had no part in the impetus. I would have expected a tagline that was more assertive than that from her.

I love the idea of the song, though the title did bother me. Not for the angle of domestic violence, however. The phrase "Look what you made me do" is generally just a lack of responsibility for a reactionary measure that one either regrets or that gets them in trouble. An excuse to be as bad as the people who harmed you. I get it, however, and in the context of this, I understand her use of it.

I agree, the phrase does remove responsibility, and she's the queen of that. The issue with the Kim/Kanye situation is that she got caught lying and then wanted "to be removed from the narrative". She had no moral ground for that. She keeps saying that this person or that person wronged her and it's like, wait you hired Katy Perry dancers knowing she was on tour. You gave Kanye permission for the lyric then claimed you didnt. She made herself a victim. That being said, I had major issue with the she's dead line. It made me highly uncomfortable and like the song title, could have used some more thought. All in all, she needs to own up to the things she did wrong, not use it to push the I'm not a goodie goodie anymore.

I agree that the coming of age trope is overplayed but what are the alternatives? If a young pop star came onto the scene already as this edgy/badass singer (think JoJo, for example), they would get trashed for their attitude, their personal life would be scrutinised to explain why they put on this persona and ultimately their career wouldn't last that long because people would get bored. The alternative is that they never shed their innocence and stay young and sweet forever. Eventually people will get bored of this too because they'd be doing the same thing over and over again. Whichever way you look at it, there's no winning and people will always find something to complain about.

I don't think this song is honestly about taking revenge on anyone. I think it's about taking back control of the narrative that has grown around her, and co-opting all the negative things people have said into a position of strength. And I don't understand the comparison to rappers.... by and large they are NOT criticized for dropping diss tracks. People tend to eat that sh*t up and rap "beefs" are practically standard practice. That comparison is ill fitted to Ana's argument. And on a personal note, I love reading and writing about pop music. To me, it's art and it's important. People who "can't find it in them to care" should just not comment.... You don't have to care, but you don't have to arbitrarily shit on something either. My two cents.

As a survivor of domestic violence, I'm not bothered by the song's title because I know she doesn't mean it that way. If anything it's like she's throwing the words of those who mistreated her right back at them. While being understanding of those with PTSD triggers is important, I don't think the world should be censored for us. I think there should always be easily accessible options for us to avoid those triggers but if society censored every single topic or phrase or image that may trigger or upset someone out there then our society would suck pretty hardcore.

Our Song was from Taylor Swift's album that was released in 2006 she was 17 years old. She is now 28 years old of course her musical style has changed in the 11 years since our song was written. It's not entirely as the female host claims "I was pretending to be sweet and innocent and now I'm pretending to be a bad ass." She was probably more shy and quiet at 17 when she was new to the industry then she is at 28 years old with life experience. Yes I agree a lot of the "fights" are for PR. I feel like the Katy Perry thing is completely staged. But her acting sweet and innocent and the changing is a part of her growing up and maturing as a person. I wasn't the same person at 28 that I was at 17. I'm guessing the female host also wasn't the same person at 17 that she is now. So I feel her claim that is all an act for PR is a bit unfair.
