Have you ever hated a level so much it had you hate the entire game? Well then you're in the right place because I hate Sirena Beach. From the Manta Storm Shine to the Mysterious Hotel Delfino Shine, Sirena Beach makes really knows how to get my panties in a bunch. Sirena Beach has some of the most frustrating shines in the entire game and with a game that has shines like lilypad rid or the chuckster stage thats really saying something. Let me take you on a ride now so you can see for yourself just how bad Sirena Beach can get.

The main reason for the jank is that as a result of time constraints Nintendo just ported over a lot of SM64's codebase to build Sunshine on top of, meaning both games have the same underlying technology and physics.
@Beefnhammer
@Beefnhammer 2 года назад
If that's true, there still were obviously some major upgrades to the engine even it was based on 64's. The water physics and the way it interacts with the sludge would never be possible in 64. For 2001, the mechanics were honestly pretty ambitious.

My only complaint with Sunshine is that it's got only 8 levels including delfino plaza. It's got the same number of shines, but a piddly number of levels, so all the shines are stuffed into the levels in huge numbers. Dude, you don't need to do the toilet to get the pineapple, you need to go to the roof and ground pound through the ceiling. Even then, you can just jump on the toilet, you don't need to sideflip.

Also, when you speak to the npcs in the hotel , they drop hints about there being a pineapple around.
@klop4228
@klop4228 Год назад
Also the fact that you absolutely have to beat the first 7 shines per level and you have to do it in order. It just defeats the purpose of making it doable in any order if you still have to do it all and the order doesn't change how each individual level plays out. And it also defeats the purpose in having bonus levels at all. It's pretend open-ended design, basically.

@@klop4228 exactly! On top pf all the other flaws THIS is the main reason I dislike the game. Essentially all the other shines that aren't shine 1-7 of each level are unnecessary, unless you intend to 100% the game. Which only a madman would do because of blue coins being hidden in the most obnoxious places and scattered within the acts. Which means the entire game is you playing act 1-7 of each stage in linear fashion. And a good amount of these shines suck.

Sirena Beach is still my favorite level, I love the manta ray shine a lot, it’s super cool and really hectic and over the top, gives me bullet hell vibes and I’m glad they eventually chase you because I wouldn’t like it if I had to find one last ray across the map. The mystery of hotel delfino is my favorite shine in the game (besides the random start I agree) because it has so much personality to it, I loved the puzzles and character of it. Sirena Beach (and definitely Sunshine in general) wasn't that bad. I agree, felt frustration when I first played it in 2002 looking for that pineapple, especially in a time where things like gamefaqs did indeed exist but internet access was nowhere near as easy to come by as today (was wifi even a thing at that point??) But that was part of the charm of gaming back then - getting stuck was a thing that would happen sometimes. If you were at a friend's house with no computer or on vacation somewhere with your family, you would either have to accept defeat and put the game down, or if you had nothing else to do/ no other games to switch to, really buckle down and try to figure shit out. Which meant meticulously talking to all the NPC's and trying to work out which dialogue was flavor text and which could be cryptic hints, combing all the nooks and crannies of the map looking for small visual indicators, etc. Especially for that mission in particular (wasn't it called "the mystery of the missing pineapple" or something?) the struggle felt immersive, really made you seem like an investigator questioning everybody and searching the entire hotel, lol. Not saying it's bad that games today are generally much easier, but that is something which is much rarer to come by, I mean the feeling of finally getting past a part you were stuck at for the longest time. Because at that point (remember, RU-vid was far off from being a thing) that meant unlocking the rest of the game, and feeling like "oh nice, I get to finally see what else this game has to offer!" Call it bad game design, but stuff like that had it's own charm.

There are two main things that stop me from coming back to Sunshine, particularly in regards to 100%ing it again or even playing around on a 100% file" 1: No freedom. Sunshine brought a lack of freedom with it's mission mode. With Mario 64, you could go into any of the worlds and barring only a couple of selected stars, you could complete virtually any mission at ay point in any order. It was often fun to go into an area and see how many missions you could complete without collecting any stars. Sunshine heavily restricts this. 2: Blue coins. In Mario 64, collecting 8 red coins was sometimes irritating, and in some courses getting 100 coins was annoying, but the coins were not hidden from you and they were often clustered, so if you found one you found them all. Blue coins, however ,are in obscure, out of the way locations and they have no checklist for them anywhere. They also don't provide a reward right away when you get them, requiring you to trade them in batches of 10 per Shine. Woe to anyone who puts the game down for a bit then picks it back up without writing down which blue coins they have and haven't got.

All you gotta do is lay into the giant Manta at the start with Jumping Shotgun Water Blasts (where Mario sprays heavy blasts of water right in front of him), and then when it splits into all the tiny ones, just spam the Sprinkler Spray (where Mario spins like a top and sprays water in all directions). If it seems like you're about to be backed into a corner or trapped by the Mantas, just jump and Hover Nozzle to safety. Alternatively, you could avoid the Manta at start while it's gigantic, slow and easy to avoid, and clear away some of the electric goop to create a more stable fighting area before engaging the manta. And in the event you somehow run low on water, you can withdraw to the beach and refill. In the event the Manta knock Mario around too much, you can hit up the tiki bars in the middle of the map, grab those coins and get some HP back. All told, the battle shouldn't be so hard that Mario will have his HP depleted or run out of water before the Manta is defeated.

I also love Isle Delfino; it feels so alive compared to most 3D Mario worlds, which are essentially floating obstacle courses and the way you can see glimpses of one area of the isle from another is the icing on the cake. I also like a more story-driven Mario game with actual more voice-acting than usual, hopefully we'll get another some day. There are missions that seriously piss me off though; Blooper Surfing, The Shell's Secret, The Watermelon Festival, Red Coins of the Pirate Ships, and the Manta Storm to name a few. The over-reliance on Fludd can be a serious problem, especially since Mario can't jump nearly as well as in SM64.

Ok I don't know what the hell happened but I was playing episode 2 of Sirena Beach and it seemed alright. I was struggling to get into the Boo's mouth at the top because the platforms were being stupid but I had eventually made it to the top. I think I was standing on the railing and when I tried to jump the janky slope physics did what they do best and I slipped to just about the bottom. I ended up on one of the platform Boos so as Mario jumped on it in frustration I ground pounded. I have no idea what happened but there were a lot of stars and *a lot* of Mario sound effects (so much so that it was probably one every frame). If I had the chance I'd show you the recording, because I was playing on the All-Stars version and got a capture of it. It was... odd.

Sunshine was the game that got me into mario. i had ignored the series as a kid in the 90's. and i still think it's one of the best in the lineup.

The game not telling you all the little secret moves is a major plus for the game not a negative in my opinion. It encourages experimenting with flud, I remember being thrilled when discovering something

I didn’t mind that level it would be worse to have enemies constantly to look out for when you’re trying to get the puzzles to line up. Honestly during the beginning of the video I thought you were going to say getting to that island because to me getting to that island can be lot worse than the challenge you wouldn’t want to know how many Yoshi‘s drowned just getting to that island!

My biggest reason for hating Super Mario Sunshine is that they put it on the Gamecube and not Nintendo 64.

6:14 These are much, much worse in the Switch re-release of 3D All-Stars… if you play with any of the Switch's controllers. The GameCube had analog L and R triggers, and Super Mario Sunshine was one of the few games that took advantage of this. Basically, however far down you pressed R affected FLUDD's water pressure. On Switch, because the ZL and ZR triggers on either the Joy Cons or the Pro Controller are digital, the game assumes you're spraying with the highest amount of water pressure… which not only affects your aiming to some extent, but it means that flipping these switches takes MUCH longer than it needs to. I 100%'d this game BEFORE Nintendo patched in GameCube controller support. I do not recommend playing this game to 100% completion in general, but I especially don't recommend doing it with any of the Switch controllers.
