This is why you start your own business, even a few clients is what I make more than in a month being an in-person PT at a gym. Wasn't a fan of not having my own schedule outside of my other job b/c it's just too busy and isn't financially worth it.
Just wanna say i love you guys. This channel has been a life saver for me just starting out. I just started at a gym 10 days ago. They are paying me 45% of what i make. 35$ 30 min sessions (trust me i know 30 mins i barely get a good workout in). I have yet to get my first check to see what it'll be. I quit my full time job right before going into training full time with no experience. Leap of faith I see the other trainers in the gym take clients back to back. Done with one 30 min session and the next jumps in. I told them i don't want to do it like that because i want to be able to talk or show more individual attention to my clients. Plus I'm so new at this. I'm trying to figure out how to organize my clients with paperwork and i use an app but it's all time consuming. So much to learn it seems overwhelming. Scheduling and everything. Oh and im planning my wedding next month too lol. All at the same time. Your videos have helped so much already. I use some of your forms as well. Thank you for what you do and man do i wish you guys were closer to Atlanta so i can just learn. Be taught. Keep cranking out these videos !
Thanks for the kind words and support! It sounds like you’re getting a pretty fair split there! Stick with it! All of that work stuff will get easier with time More videos on the way soon!
I can’t tell you how I went into personal training with the false expectation of over $20/hr. You consistently make that only if you have clients that often but it takes a while to build to that
Same! I've been a trainer for close to a year and my base pay is $15.50 per hour. I like the hard work that's involved but wow, I wish it wasn't so hard to make a decent income in this field
Hi! I work at a fitness studio in chennai, india. I work roughly 7 hours a day, and see 4-6 clients a day. I get paid 30k rupees a month, while theycharge 10k a month per client. For the amount of work we do, including some administrative and floor management work and overseeing sessions between 45-90 min per sessions, I feel we need to get paid better. We work hard and have unpaid breaks. My boss charges about 50% of what other studios charge in our city. The S&C community in India is severely underpaid in general, so for us freelancing is the best option.
It sounds like you’re doing a great job overall! It also sounds pretty similar to what happens to PTs here in the US as well. I would consider finding a different location to train clients, or like you said, consider going off on your own.
This is a great video Jeff. All your content is super useful. I was just wondering if you can make a video about fitness coaches working on cruises. I have heard that these trainers generally have a packed schedule and have to conduct personal training in addition to pilates, Yoga, and even conducting seminars related to health and wellness for guests on the cruise. I would like to know the limitations and advantages of working here.
I became certified in the early part of 2023 in the UK through Virgin Active and was shocked when Virgin Active were offering PT roles at their gyms to newly qualified trainers at a rate of £16 per session. So I set up my own studio space and converted the garage to train clients at home with no overheads at my rate.
I got hired at the ymca start Wednesday . The Pay seem better than La Fitness And Mountainside fitness in Phoenix. Mountainside was 16.00 on commission And 9.50 fitness floor . I think La fitness is 16.00 too in Phoenix I get paid hourly 14.00$ for clean equipment , Meeting, FitnessFloor And Assessment training 30 Min 14.50$ And 60 min sessions 26.50 tie 1 . Tie 2 Is More around 32$ for 60 min , 30 Min 20$. I am not sure if ymca consider a big box gym like La Fitness And 24 Hours fitness
Im 54 and about to try p.training. i could lose another 15 lbs or so but i take no meds, cycle 50 miles regularly and can run for over an hour on the treadmill. Hopefully that will be enough to get myself a job.
Subscribed :) Question for you though: I live in Switzerland, and am sending applications out to gyms with the hope of being a personal trainer. I have a BS in Exercise Science (Kinesiology) and speak English and French (not yet fluently but am getting there). I was in the process of weighing pros and cons regarding different contract. One gym contract requires me to "rent" the gym for 530.- per month while being paid 480.- (admin/other tasks) per month. So no clients means you actually pay the gym while working for them as an employee. Also I do not believe anything is put aside for retirement/pension. Any other advice/input is welcome :) Thank you.
Every gym or studio works a bit differently. I would keep applying and find one that works for you in terms of what you’re looking for. Depending on whether you’re an employee/renting space/independent will determine how much you’re getting paid or paying the gym.
The company I used to work for was a separate company to the box gym. So where’d all those expenses go to??? A once a week package for a month was almost $2000 and trainers were paid at most $23/hr.
So, that company could definitely have been screwing you over on pay. In fact, it sounds like they most likely were doing that. That said, they would still be responsible for all of the overhead that I mentioned. Social security & Medicare taxes, unemployment, liability insurance, etc. I’m sure they had other overhead as well that I’m not aware of. So, there’s a very high chance that their expenses were higher then you’d think.
