Marvel's Phase 4 has seen a divisive set of movies and TV shows that have drastically expanded the scope of the MCU. But how do all of these various threads connect? Is the MCU just throwing random IP at us? Or is there a real plan behind Phase 4, setting up the Multiverse Saga? We explain.

#Marvel #Phase 4 #Connections
I want to talk about Phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, I want to prove to all of you that this phase-which may seem like its made of random projects-is actually telling one cohesive story that is united by single theme. Like the MCU always says, it’s all connected.
So, Phase 4 has been a weird one. It’s the first time Marvel studios has fully incorporated TV shows into their storytelling. Now we’ve previously had shows like Agents of Shield incorporated the movies into their stories, like the brilliant follow up episodes to winter soldier [clip, hail hydra]. But Phase 4 is the first time that any cinematic universe fully incorporated TV shows.
Doug: Well, Ezra Miller’s Flash did show up on the CW.
True, but as part of the multiverse, so that [obi wan, aotc, doesn’t count]. And anyways, we’ll get to the multiverse in a few minutes. First I want to address why people feel like this phase has been aimless.
I started really seeing this complaint after Thor: Love and thunder. Most of Phase 4’s projects up till then told solo, stand-alone stories. For instance, Black Widow, the Eternals, Shang Chi, and What If.
And there were also plenty of stories that dealt with the repercussions of Phase 3, like Wandavision, Hawkeye, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki.
These projects defined the Phase’s first year, 2021. But 2021 ended with a massive multiversal crossover, teaming up Doctor Strange with spider-man, spider-man, and spider-man. So fans are ready for 2022 to feel more connected…they wanted to finally get those sweet-sweet MCU connections we all love.
And instead…we got mostly more standalone stories. Moon Knight, She Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Mutiverse of Madness, Werewolf by Night, The Guardians holiday special, and Thor: Love and Thunder are also all standalone projects that tell a singular story about their main characters.
There was an expectation that thor’s movie would kick us off into high gear. Because he’s an OG avenger in a major motion picture, we thought he was gonna meet Dr. Doom, or something. But that didn’t happen, did it?
Doug: No, it didn’t.
So, after the intricate setup of the Infinity saga, where every element serves a purpose in the final story, it was hard to see the connective tissue between all of the projects. How does She- Hulk connect to Thor: Love and Thunder? Well we’re going to explain how, but first, I have to say, that we should not be holding phase four up to the same standards as phase 3.
Phase 3 was a culmination of like 20 movies. It earned its crossover and connective tissue. We should really be comparing phase four to phase one, or even phase 2…and those phases were not very well connected, in hindsight.
Marvel studios did not have a plan set in stone when they started out. TonySstark’s cameo at the end of the Incredible Hulk makes no sense [clip]. They recast two main characters. Crossover moments were conceived of, and then cut out, like Hulk breaking loose the ice where Steve Rogers was frozen.
Even Thanos was included as a post credits sene after the fact, because joss whedon wanted to tease him for another movie. [clip, him explainign this, third movie]. Even Selvig being mind controlled by loki at the end of the makes no sense, in hindsight, because loki shows up to control him in the avengers.

There's been a strong through line about grief and loss, as well. Almost every project has seen the characters grappling with some form of loss and the grief associated with it. Which makes sense, as we lost a lot of characters we'd grown to love at the end of Phase 3. We, the audience, needed to move through their loss just as the characters who remain did. Not saying that was the focus, but it has been present.

And the survival guilt associated with it. 1)Hawkeye with Black widow 2)Bucky with his old neighbor who’s son he killed 3)Wanda obviously with having to kill Vision with it meaning nothing 4)Loki learning that his path causes the death of his mother & father 5)Spidey with Aunt May Examples are everywhere & the stories are about what choices they make to deal with the guilt of causing the death or not being able to prevent it.

Thanks for making this. A lot of people seem to miss that the phases work as acts of a larger story. Phase 4 is act 1 of the multiverse saga so it's slower and setting everything up. Phase 5 or act 2 will see the stakes raised. I personally thought it was obvious that 3 phase stories was clear 3 acts. This is why Phase 3 is everyone's favorite because it was the climax of the Infinity stone saga

I don't care what anyone says. I liked the "reveal" in WandaVision. Yes, it was obvious, but Kathryn Hahn's delivery makes me get goosebumps every time. It was the first time in a long time that the actual mechanics of the MCU were used as a plot device... This is kind of like revealing how the Elder Wand works in Harry Potter. You have a seemingly insignificant object become the focal point of a prophecy that eventually leads to some exception to the rules of the universe. That moment in WandaVision was monumental.

I believe that will be the difference between casual fans and the more hardcore fans. The casual fans have fallen by the wayside from phase 4. Personally, I feel phase 4 should have been slimmed down because there is way too much content for casual fans to understand moving forward. And that is especially true if they are going to continue the trend of not talking about the events of the shows in the movies where they are relevant. This severely hampered multiverse of madness, for instance. The boxiness of the stories are just a little too much. Sometimes it worked (moon knight), other times it didn’t (multiverse of madness and black widow), and most of the time it was meh (Thor, Black Panther, eternals, Shang Chi, etc.). And I think that’s where a lot of the trouble for phase 4 lies (lots of meh movies).

You're absolutely wrong. from the very first Iron Man and all the other movies built up before Avengers Infinity Wars were standalone and pretty enjoyable on their own and yet were progressing the story forward. There were hardly bad movies before phase 4 begun and EVERYBODY enjoyed it and they did infact build up so well to the Endgame event. But phase 4 tried to move to fast and pushed way too many things to the audience and they weren't that great titles standalone either, with the exception of Loki, Shang-Chi and even Wereworld by Night and that's just three titles which you can watch over and over without getting bored. @awashington8447 Год назад
There's a reason why the Infinity Saga worked: the audience wants to feel like it's a part of a *Narrative Journey* and the first 10 years of the MCU gave them that. They were having the cinematic experience of watching an incredible story unfold in real time, that's why a cinematic universe works-the audience feels like they are a part of it Phase 4 didn't do that. Nothing seemed to connect to anything else, every character was trying to be the comic relief, and there didn't feel like there was a plot or even a direction the franchise was heading towards -the abundance of shows were basically to flesh out the Disney+ library, nothing more. Fans aren't stupid and they see right through that 🎯

Honestly I hope they change very little going forward. The people complaining aren’t right (not saying they are wrong) this time. The only thing that can solve the issues that people have is time. The identity struggle has always been the center of superhero stories. Whether it's balancing the demands of the "real" self and their alter egos, or trying to make peace with the destructive potential of their superpowers, the quest for finding one's self and locating one's self in the grander scheme of things have been point and center in MCU. We can see this from Iron Man trying to keep his normal life afloat amidst his public identity. Thor had to learn humility before taking on the identity of the Asgardian king. Cap had to create a new identity after waking up in a different era. And of course, Bruce literally fighting with another identity The multiverse saga really just made the identity crisis a lot more literal

While I agree with your assessment of Phase 4, I also believe Marvel and Disney used it as a sort of experiment. Like you said, it was the first time movies and shows worked hand in hand in the telling of a major story, and Disney wanted to know exactly how to best use the Series format. Some shows worked and some weren't a big hit. How do you introduce a new character, tell a decent story AND keep viewers hooked for a 6,8 or 10 series run? You introduce the Special Presentation. WBN was such a fun and incredibly detailed show that focused on a very specific tale. It worked perfectly as a "short movie" but probably would have lost fans as a series. I believe She hulk would have been better received as a Special Presentation rather than the series we got. With phase 4 done and the reviews in, I think we'll get a better balance of movies, series, and special presentations.

To my understanding, this is how many newer fans got started and lucky enough to have all the movies at their fingertips. In my opinion that is a different viewing experience affecting perception of storytelling. As a person who is not really into this batch of content after Infinity Saga, Thank you for pointing out that I should be comparing phase 4 to phase 1. This breakdown was really awesome I’ve tried to listen to other creators, but Ryan is the best.

Incredible analysis, bro! You hit the nail on the head! The younger RU-vidrs lack a broader vision and always spend their time (and mine) nitpicking their childish, and often misogynistic, confusions. No wonder so many people (like me) respect and admire your work. You bring a lot of objective clarity to your reportage and reviews. And you can be sweetly funny too. Ryan, you are a class act! Kudos... um, I mean... EXCELSIOR!!

Minor correction. They DID have a plan when they started. The entire venture (MCU) was based on a plan - starting with Ironman, to create movies protecting their IP. They had to use B and C team heroes because the others were all taken. Blade gave them hope that the plan could work. This was all covered in an HBR Case Study back in 2006/7. I know because we covered in in Grad school and I still have that case study.

This phase is amazing to me...I'm writing before I watch Ryan and Doug talk. The reason I like it is because it's so unpredictable...even more so than the first phase...when it all comes together it'll be jaw dropping. But the thread I see is Gods. With Wanda, with Thor, with Moon Knight. Maybe even She-Hulk with her seeing godly power in breaking the forth wall...Loki is in that same vein.

It's so strange. I vividly remember the complaints about Phase 2 and 3 about the movies feeling like nothing but filler that tried too hard to be connected. Now people are acting like Phase 4 is bad because the movies aren't connected enough? Hmmm, I guess what they saw about the casual audience is true...

As always amazing job researching and writing this and a BEYOND great take on finding the connective tissue between all these projects. While you're 100% correct in this, I also think you're 100% wrong. Here's why. MARVEL DIDN'T INTEND THIS! ...@least I don't think they did. If people have to think this much about connective theme then it's not really there IMHO. Phase IV is the cinematic V bomb that covid hit us with. Shut downs. Delays. Reworks and cancelations. Plus after Endgame I'm sure everyone, especially our robotic overlord Kevin, was exhausted and just wanted to sit back and enjoy the success they managed. Who knows if they even had another big connective direction for these? Doesn't seem like they did. It wasn't even named the multiverse saga until after Loki was it? Anyhoo, again, amazing work on this video and I'm sure Marvel appreciates it but with multi billion dollar projects theme has to be obvious. It should've been called the C19 Scrapes Saga.

Identify being a running theme is interesting, but I feel that it's not new or limited to play four, since it's sort of required for a hero's journey narrative. The original Avengers cast for instance had very obvious themes about identity, from becoming a hero (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America), inner struggle (Hulk), or coming to grips with haunting reminders of the past (Black Widow, Bucky). Hawkeye definitely needed time to bloom though!

Okay, it looks alright - but lets be honest - ALL the MCU stories, movies and TV shows are all about identities. And I do mean all of them. It's easy to pick in Phase 1, every hero finding who he truly is (it takes Iron Man two movies to get there, and the struggle of who he is now keeps on appearing on the third film). Thor is all over it, 3 times in a row, Captain America also, and when it kinda settle down the question goes to Bucky. Ant-Man is also there, think about it - even as he goes into Antman and the Wasp, the flashes and conversations of Scott been possessed by Hope's mom, it brings us back to an identity crisis. Also there's Ghost with her own identity crisis. Even Thanos goes through it with IW, choosing the stones over his daughter(s). The identity thing is NOT unique for phase 4. It is just a common theme for every hero-journey-themed story, which of course will included all if not most of the super-hero franchises out there. The same can be spoken about DC films - Man of Steel is Superman finding who he is, Suicide Squad (both of them) are them finding out they are not just villains. BVS is all about what makes us heroes and who we are underneath (and if we can bleed or something, that movie is a mess), Aquaman, Shazam, Harley Queen, Black Adam, they are ALL about heroes (or anti-heroes) finding who they are, or at least who they are from this moment on. So nope - I'm not buying it. I love most of Phase4, but saying it's all about identity is misinterpreting the genre imo. Hero-journeys are ALWAYS about identities. That's an inherent part of it. It's harder to find a super-hero movie which is NOT about identity or the struggle about it, actually. Maybe some of the Blades movie, or the weaker X-Men movies, even Deadpool 2 is about finding who you truly are. So sorry, it's not the one thing that connects all Phase4. I tried to find a cohesive frame for this phase but there's none. Maybe it's because there is too much content. Maybe because they just shot so many shots, some of them stick and some didn't. It wasn't grief, though it was apparent from Wandavision to Wakanda Forever (because Shehulk and Strange weren't about it at all, and Loki touched it only barely), and it wasn't about motherhood though it did have a strong theme going (and again, skipped in Doctor Strange and Shehulk, Loki and F&TWS among others). But the identity thing? Nope, that's was always there. And always will be.

I think the way you described Dreykov’s daughter AKA Taskmaster is a perfect encapsulation. That’s what gave me more of an appreciation of the MCU’s Taskmaster than the others who have been boohooing about straying from the comics. Although I wish that the comics version of Taskmaster was maybe revealed later on as the original, like Hank Pym was the original Ant Man. I’m hoping to see more of Taskmaster moving forward.

I really enjoyed Phase 4, besides Eternals, there was nothing I really disliked. It wasn't as smooth or as streamlined as phases 1-3 But 1-3 was janky in its own way I think a lot of people are far too harsh on phase 4. There's more projects so there will be more people won't like. If phase 4 was only like 7 projects I think it would be even worse depending on what projects got kicked out.

Thank you for mentioning things that have thought and new would happen since the end of Phase 3. What the video says makes sense. A new saga started a new arc of a story, so the have to build the story. People seem to want these epic movies or an ending to a phase like an Avengers film to look forward to. We don't need an Avengers film every phase with the MCU being so big now. But without a foundation what people are screaming for, will turn into what the DCEU tried and failed at doing. Every other complaint I see is subjective to whether something was good or bad. I see some who say they dislike one also be loved by another. That isn't fixable. I remember the internet complaining about the first Captain America movie, but cried at him and Agent Carter getting there dance...which was first mentioned in that first Captain America film. By phase six, people may still hate phase four, (or not, who knows), but it will matter story-wise and emotionally.

The way I see it is the films and tv shows are just there to let us know what the heroes have done and how they grow to set the scene for the big "avengers" type films (I say it like that because there are likely to be different team up movies). The stand alone films don't have to constantly show it's linked to other properties, that's what the team up films are for. The stand alone films build up to the team up films and then the team up films build up to the saga end film/s. Solo films

Thing is... when they promo'ed the Disney+ shows and Phase 4 films... they specifically said that you could watch the films WITHOUT having to watch the tv shows and still be able to understand what was going on. But... if you DID happen to watch the tv shows... you'd have a LOT more information than those who just went to the films. I think they forgot about that as they were going through them.

Yes, phase 4 did some things right, but that doesn't mean it is without its flaws. Some narrative decisions are just stupid and couldn't be just explained by that it's different, some shows and movies suffering more than others. There sure were interesting details, but there was equally as much red herrings that didn't do anything, or would matter too late for people to care, i.e. even up to next phases. But overall, I would still say some of the hate is just people getting bored of the superhero niche, often not expressed as that.

Its almost like a book never starts with the climax and keeps building on that climax; It all has to start from somewhere or something. You can't establish a building without the grounds it was structured on. People just don't seem to get what this Phase is. And personally, I'd rather have a slight dip in quality if it means the bigger Phases 5 and 6 get more Vfx attention.

There's definitely plenty to criticise about Phase 4, but I think it makes perfect sense for it to have focused on the consequences of Endgame, and setting up new characters. Like Ryan said, it should be compared more to Phase 1 than Phase 3 - it's literally the start of a brand new Saga lol.

Since Jeckyll and Hyde, all narrative has asked "Who am I?" as in Who's the narrator OR Who is the main character. Who's telling the story in Phase 4. Nick Fury told us 1-3. Who's the main character as an analysis tests our perception as well as puts the action into context. Kang hasn't worked alone, for example. Loki is actually many Lomi's. The 1 that stabs HWR isn't less important than another. Are Sam and Bucky simply on a collision course or are they simply part of Steve's story? No 1, includi g Bruce, knows their purpose yet. That's "Who am I". The question that defines the foundation for all analysis. Stan Lee pulled this through all of Marvel from the Mutants (Charles versus Eric) and Peter versus Matt. Peter never saw himself as a vigilante, for example. The shio of These us is exactly this. With everything changing, with so much at stake, which version remains after everything collapses?
