A Photoshop layer mask can only support shades of gray. Therefore, if a mask is targeted, any color that is chosen via the Color Picker will be converted into a shade of gray.
To target a layer mask, click once on the mask thumbnail within the Layers panel. To target a layer itself, click once on the layer thumbnail within the Layers panel. A border around a layer thumbnail or mask thumbnail will indicate which element is targeted.
With a regular layer targeted, colors chosen within the Color Picker will not be converted to a shade of gray.
