Why Playing New Games Feels Impossible

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth jus came out and it looks amazing! ...but I don't think I'm gonna play it. The reason for this is because lately I haven't been able to play new games and often find myself returning to older ones like Masterduel and Valorant. I'll explain why AND how to fix it!

For me it's been the overwhelming amount of amazing games but also how much of a time sink they are. Persona 3 is 80 hours, Banishers is 25-30, Granblue Fantasy Relink is 15 (but the post game is where it's at so that's 40+ hours). So learning new mechanics while you tackle a full time degree, part time jobs and all that makes me want to play Fortnite cause it's easy (I knew what to do and don't need to worry about anything). It's a tricky situation Side note, shout out to the AC tunes in the background 🥹

It may just be better not to buy a new game until you’re ready to play it. I’m guilty of not doing that myself, but I think the reason so many of us do is because there’s this mindset now that we have to buy the latest game to keep up with others, and by “others” I mostly mean influencers/journalists/marketers who play games for their jobs. When gaming is treated like a chore, it stops being, well, gaming. And the business people who market games don’t care if you actually enjoy the game, just that you buy it and keep buying whatever they put out. So we shouldn’t have to treat games like movie releases, where it’s in theaters for a time and then that experience is gone, but instead like something we pick up when we’re in the mood for it (I’d say like a book, but book marketing has made that industry also suffer from mass hype culture and fomo-influence).

Yeah I think it's easy to fall into the trap of seeing game reviewers, who get paid to play games, and thinking your own life should be like that (when you're the one that pays to play). It also doesn't help that the gaming landscape has broadened a ton over the last 10 years and there's new games coming out every single day. You just have to accept that you're not going to play everything, nor should you

One of your best videos in my opinion, great content, packaging, and it's not clickbait in the slightest. Also the idea of playing a game and not having to learn it totally makes sense. I can play generations ultimate while reading stream chat and having a very intense debate with my best friend, only like 5% of my attention is on my gameplay yet I'm still able to clap cheeks with anything I happen to be hunting, it's kinda weird how much muscle memory I have for the game and other mh games

As someone who needs to learn and work on coding projects in my spare time, in addition to attending grad school and having an internship, I've found that the same part of my brain that helps me complete those projects also enables me to pick up a game and finish it. I avg about 1 a month. It's not really that I don't have time to play all these games. It's just that playing a story-driven experience with a beginning, middle, and end, like FF7 Rebirth, is more mentally draining. So I really empathize with people who don't play new games. But Id say it's worth it just so you don't regret not commiting to a game you wanted to play.

I never understood why my friends would just keep defaulting to the same games over and over despite them saying "they hate it" or "I'm tired of this game". Saying things like "I wanna play a different game". I would then suggest a whole slew of different games and genres they could try out, but they would never give any thing new a chance. I guess I can see why it's this way now. It was just a bit confusing in my head, especially since I am someone who constantly searches for new experiences in general.

I'd say for me personally over time my taste in game just shifted. I was a huge jRPG fan (and still am kinda), but the most excited I was for a FF game in the past 10 years was the Crisis Core remaster. I've been really digging cRPG games lately, when Rogue Trader dropped I already sank 200 hours into over 3 weeks. So for me, I can still really get excited about new games, but the type of game is different compared to, lets say, 10 years ago.

I dont feel the analogy of staying at a job translates to playing the same game because of diminishing returns. If i work the same job, i get either the same pay or raises brings me more money. I've had this exact problem and gave myself a similar approach to trying out new (old) games. As I got a MM+ (emulator), whenever I finish a game, I force myself to play a game from a different console for a few games before finally returning to a game on the same console (e.g. rotating between GB, GBA, GBC, Genesis, NDS, NES, SNES, Pico, PS1). Granted, it takes some fun out of it, knowing I'm just trying to get through the enormous backlog of games in each console's history, but I do at least force myself to experience something new that I write myself notes on after each one. The main problem with my goal of playing as many good games as possible, arises when I start getting into Pokemon and various other rpgs, as those take forever because I "unfortunately" enjoy them too much.

For me it probably has something to do with my age. I mean, when I was a teen or early 20's, I had no problems getting into a new game or experience, but as I got older, I prefer sticking to what I'm comfortable with. I've been going back to old stuff recently. Old stuff that I grew up with, or even old stuff that was a bit before my time, and I've been enjoying that more. It's also the fact that old games were just shorter experiences, but at the same time, more replayable.

I am still holding my controller, when do I stop holding it? In all seriousness, this was the same thing for me when learning a fighting game with a new controller there's a lot of commitment with learning something new to the point were I just go like eh I don't feel like playing today and play Valorant instead. For me the main dopamine I get is from learning or practicing something and applying it to a situation that I had just learned or practiced for, its a sense of immediate achievement that gives me satisfaction how long it takes me to learn or practice something is a different story but I think a lot of it comes from motivation and actually trying out new things. I think you pretty much hit the nail on the coffin in explaining why we seem to stick to games we already play instead of trying out or playing new games, its just because we're used to them and its just comforting to us.

guess i'm not human then, because i'm the exact opposite. when a game is always the same, rinse and repeat (valorant, overwatch, heck even FFXIV endgame) i'm just bored, frustrated and if i dont play something unique and new to explore and invest dozens of new hours into, i even get angry sometimes. i NEED change, i need a fresh experience each and every time. and its very hard for me to understand how people STILL play the same game over and over and over non-stop. but i'm also a nostalgia kind of guy, so i return to old games from years ago to replay them, sometimes.

I feel like if you don't like the style of game to begin with, you're just forcing it out of the feeling of "well, everyone's playing it/talking about it so I should do it to be part of the hype," but if the genre or if the style of the game is not to your liking, you will eventually abandon the game. If it's a new game, you like the style/combat/genre, etc., you'll finish the tutorial in no time; In fact, you will pay more attention to it. So at the end of the day, buying a new game because it's currently a topic of conversation is a big bait and once the hype dies and you play it, you'll be like, "Uh... oh, I am not having fun, i'd rather play an old game I like." Because it's going to feel like a chore.

For me, the opposite has been happening. While I used to only no-life one or two games and forget about the rest, I've been finding myself doing the total opposite as of late. My two main games used to be Overwatch and Rainbow Six Siege. I played those games every single day for a couple of hours, but about half a year ago, I kinda started to get really bored of online PvP games. I always found myself getting frustrated playing these games and just not enjoying myself as much as I should while playing games, so I took a prolonged break from any and all PvP games and started focusing more on single-player experiences. Since then, I've been playing a large variety of games, some that were right up my alley, others that weren't, but that was fine. I was enjoying gaming to the fullest again. Now, I started playing some online PvP games again, but I keep them to a minimum. If I start to feel myself getting frustrated, I switch back to a chiller experience. Currently, I'm playing Final Fantasy Rebirth and it's been AWESOME. Funny thing is, I've only played my very first Final Fantasy game about 2 months ago with Final Fantasy 7 Remake. So yeah, gaming should be for fun, and if you don't find yourself having fun anymore, it's time for a change, and I'm glad I did because I'm no longer gatelocked behind having to play and grind my online PvP games anymore.

That subscribe button bit may just be the best one yet I run into this video's topic a LOT. For me personally I think it's less a time issue and more of a lack of mental energy issue. Learning how to play a game, even if it's fairly simple, uses up brain power that I just don't have anymore. So I'll keep playing Slay the Spire, Inscryption, and other games I don't want to admit to liking. And I've found that when I DO finally venture out into something new, I'll still with the entire series until it's over because playing Game 6 of that series is still fresher than going back to the same things I've put so much time into. And once it's totally over, I'll go back to not trying anything new again for a while.

I think a lot of these points are pretty accurate. For me I think having a "main" game and so many other games I enjoy doesn't help. I play competitive Pokemon and it was hard to balance that and playing FFXIV alone. And it was even harder trying to play other games that I wanted to try. I took a few years off from having a main game and played a lot of backlog and new games. But now that I got back into competitive Pokemon it's hard to balance my main game and the other games I want to play. Especially the comfort aspect and wanting to play what feels like home. It's hard finding someone that feels like how I do with my situation lol. I even set up a system where I only focus on my main game and one-two rotation games that I beat and swap out. But even then it's hard to find balance. Especially when I like and enjoy and interest in many games.

"Why can't you play newer games?" 1.Too many intrusive cutscenes & walking segments that keep interrupting the gameplay. It is annoying. And replayablility value of these games is zero 2. Too much handholding. Feels like a chore when you don't have to apply your brain & the game just gives you a checklist of "go here, go there, do that, blah blah blah". Like I would wanna play the game & figure out on my own but most games these days don't trust the intellect of their consumers. 3. Too much bloating & dragging with repetitive side missions. Games back in the PS2-PS3 era used to be like 15-30 hours experience. But now we have 80-100 hour games that have no business being that long tbh. They are intentionally dragged out with BS so that the devs can boast about how their new game is "bigger & better" when it's really not. It is worse. 4. AAA games having too much budget like 200-300 million dollars. They don't take risks anymore. They play it safe. So ofc when they are not taking risks, the creativity & innovation has stopped. All these AAA games feel very samey cuz they are. You are not playing anything groundbreaking. Elden Ring & Baldur's Gate 3 are the only good AAA games I have played in past 5 years.

To me as a slight offshoot of the commitment section I'd add time to the equation, not simply time I have to dedicate to games but the amount of time a game wants me to dedicate. More and more these days it has become a red flag for me whenever a game touts itself as having 100+ hours of content. Like sure that's a ton of content and bravo to the devs for putting the effort in (provided it's good content and not endless padding). But even if the content itself is all phenomenal just looking at that is just automatically exhausting. Even with games I previously played and know I love thinking about going back and replaying gets hampered when I think about just how much of a commitment that will be. More so with longer series. Just recently I wanted to get back into the Yakuza games. I love the series, I've enjoyed the games I played, but I somewhat burnt out over time on them. But now wanting to get back into it I looked at the remaining games in the series and they are just so long and there are so many. Lets be generous and say someone has around 4 hours a day for gaming alongside work/family/other responsibilities. That's almost a month to make it through a hundred hours worth of content. That's a month just dedicated to that one game not factoring in other hobbies or the fact that people don't always have time to play every day or that many people aren't necessarily going to have 4 full hours a day for gaming. Now multiply that by all the games in a series or all the games you want to play and it quickly becomes more and more of a task for something that was supposed to be fun. As a result at least personally my response isn't necessarily to go back to one infinitely repayable tried and true game but that I just gravitate towards smaller indie titles. Games that I can get in have fun and finish without the massive commitment. Big massive games are very quickly losing out to short crafted experiences with the exception of the occasional specific title. Like for me when Silksong or Dragon Quest 12 eventually comes out I know I will happily sink a ton of time into those games. But most of the time it's just becoming preferable to stick to the smaller indie games rather than another giant time sink of a game, even if that game is great.

Very interesting upload. I myself play em all but I have a ton of time to play and love both multiplayer and singleplayer games. I think one big factor is the skill ceiling. Take apex legends for example. That game has a very very high skill ceiling. Much more so than a single player jrpg like ff7 or most single player games. After dedicating hundreds of hours into it and seeing your skills continually improve makes you want to keep playing and see how far you can go. As you rack up more wins and continue to learn more and more as new maps and characters are added you are further learning and improving. This is a very addictive feedback loop. before you know it you have dedicated so much time and improved so much and YET see how much more room there still is for improvement that the game has its hooks in you good. Its the push to be better. To win more. To be better than the rest. This leads to thousands of hours on a multiplayer game. Also real people keep every match fresh as opposed to a single player game against AI. I love both but they fill very different roles in my life. One is a high stakes heart pounding competitive rush for the victory putting all the skills you have acquired over thousands of hours to the test leading to an amazing sense of accomplishment as you rack up more victories and the other can be a game with amazing music and worlds and stories and characters and fun gameplay and all sorts to get lost in and enjoy. There is room for both but it will eat up a lot of your time. (Its worth noting I always stop whatever my current multiplayer game is for a new souls game. They take priority over all other games for me ever since demons souls stole my heart back in 2010)

For me it's the opposite. The more familiar I get with a game, the less interesting it gets. There are few games that can hold my attention until the end. I need stimulation in the form of variety and fresh experiences, and if that includes learning new inputs or different mechanics, that is some of the greatest fun I can have. Elden Ring is the first game in many years that hasn't had this effect on me. I'm 600 hours in and I want to keep playing it. There's so much variety, so much to experiment with.

The commitment to required session time for worthwhile enjoyment is what intimidates me. For roguelites or matchmaking games - you can have a fun run or fun game in a reasonable amount of time. Big story driven games need at MINIMUM a couple of hours per session to get something out of them. With the video game medium you want both satisfying gameplay and satisfying story progression, which means longer time session. It doesn't have the efficiency of either a movie/book or a roguelite/platformer/shooter

I do not really play multiplayer or roguelites but yes, definitely. I feel like it is not even worth it to start a jrpgs, if I do not have at least 3 hours or the whole evening. Indie Games have been better in that regard for me, especially games which can be completed in around 20 hours max or even shorter.

I'm too old for this" (I'm 28 lol). Meanwhile when I see a SIMPLE game that looks fun, I'm very much drawn to it, just as the Celeste example you mentioned. There's something so relaxing and rewarding about a simple game with simple mechanics that rewards your skill and wit, not your ability to study textbooks of lore and learn complex mechanics. And of course I always go back to cozy games from my teenage years like Monster Hunter, Dark Souls 1, Pokemon, just to name a few. As you said, they feel comfy because I already know the mechanics, the monsters, the levels, the world, the ins and outs. So it feels like going back home for vacation. I think when we were younger, our minds were not so overloaded with information (today we are bombarded by youtube, twitter, instagram, tik tok, etc) and we had some room left to fill with game stuff, to have fun learning new games and mecanics, and we also had much more time. Nowdays, with our adult responsabilities and the state of our world (absolute stimuli overload), there's much less space left. Yeah I'm totally in the same boat as you brother lol.

I have a unique reason for this problem. I need to have "perfect conditions" to play a big new game (enough time, good mood, enough sleep, etc). While waiting for those conditions, starting the game feels more and more like an obligation, and the longer it sits on the backlog, the more I resist playing it.

Video games that want to be more accessible introduce mechanics bit by bit, they don't throw everything at the player right away. They give you one mechanic to learn and build the first section of the game entirely around that one mechanic. Then they introduce another mechanic in another section. This continues until all the mechanics have been introduced. Many of the Metroid games work exactly like this. That's one of the many reasons why they're so popular.

Crazy watching this video during a time where I’m in game limbo. My comfort game in nba 2k but they do money hungry, I’m turned off. I just beat LAD: Gaiden and need a new game. I’m no business consultant but I work 40 hrs (50+ during the first week of the month), starting a game dev hobby, still planning on finishing my mba in finance, and I also jus had a kid. Fingers crossed Tales of Arise is worth the risk I’m about to take🤞🏾😂 Might have to do method 1 for this and if that don’t work. Gonna try method 3 but with a slice of life game

I retired at 25. I can play games all day but I don't. I do have exceptions. One example is Palworld. I played that for 125 Hours in 2 weeks and never played it again. Only FFVII, GTA, and games similiar to No Man's Sky have that effect on me. Even with all time in the world I game an average of 6 Hours a day. That may seem like a lot to some but I am replacing the average person's work time with gaming. The rest of our lives are about the same.

Ok, now for a slitghly different situation, what if I can't play an OLD game? A game that I already played for a bunch of hours but I never finished. A game that I loved while playing it, that some day for seemingly no reason at all I stopped playing and I just didn't come back to. A game that I like, that I know I'm gonna enjoy every minute that I spend playing, but that I can't play for no reason. Sure, the solution is the same, just force myself to play it one day and I'll finish it in a week, but what's the reason why I don't play it? It's a game I already know I like. I don't have to learn the controls or the combat mechanics. So why can't I just come back to that game and finish it? It's happened to me so many times. I have a lot of games that I wanna finish but for some inexplicable reason I just can't do it.

I don't know if this will compare to your situation but I've had this issue with certain games I love (Divinity Original Sin 2 in particular) which is that I know the game too well. I've tried over and over at various points to play the game again because it's amazing and I want to go through it again but then as I start the game up and find myself going through the intro areas I know by heart it just ends up feeling like a slog not because the game is bad but because it feels like I'm just going through the motions. No surprise, nothing new to discover, just trying to push through hoping to get invested for the long term.

I play game to relax so quick play limited time session is ideal. But new games are grand and big. I just don't have time for that. Also the cost of the games, the console/computer to run them. I also don't like some game play loop. Like some RPG where the only thing you can do is level up but the game play involved no real skill.

Luckily valorant isnt fun for me if i play alone so iam not that addicted.

My method of starting playing other games again, not necessarily new ones, was very simple: unisntalling league. Jk, but seriously it was because I bought Metroid Prime remastered on chistmas. At first i had this problem, but I kinda forced picked it up because I didn´t want to waste yet another game I bought not to play it, and I was hooked, I hadn´t sunk this much time in a single player game in years. It made me long for more experiences like this, so i comitted to playing more diverse experiences both on gamepass and older games that I´d bought. That + unironically unisntalling League which took me out of what had been my comfort zone for four years at that point has pushed me to trying to find and play more games that i enjoy. Right now I don´t have that much time due to finals but I´m really getting a kick out of No Man´s Sky and Slay the Spire for instance.

I think you may have found my main road block with many new games, or at least one of them. I cant for the life of me use a controller. Main issue i regularly come to are my inability to use triggers and shoulders together and anything to do with the right thumb-stick, usually used for camera. I simply have no muscle memory for it. And it seems like an increasing number of games are using the same HUD and controls layout that is adapted to a controller. I am not saying its a bad thing, heck most times i can adjust the keyboard and mouse and play just fine. Its just something i noticed, and that something makes me feel as if i am not playing it as i am supposed to. Admittedly i am playing an increasing amount of older JRPG ports rather than new releases, some of witch don't even allow you to bind the camera to your mouse. Its why i bought an XBOX one controller and am trying to learn, so far Racing games i clearly prefer on the controller and cant go back, Persona 4G and 5R i had no issues on either way and Tales of Zestiria was the hardest to adjust myself so far, nearly dropping the game twice because i kept missing some imputs and forgetting buttons. I definitely need to learn how to use a controller more.

Damn another banger video and yeah the subscribe button bit was genius lol. But I kind of agree with you when it comes to learning new games. Recently I’ve been trying to bring down my backlog and I’ve started to realize shorter games (10-20 hours) are definitely my go to if I want a short experiences. I still like my JRPGs but since I don’t have much time they’re pretty far and in between. That’s why if a game can grab me in the first 2 hours like say Granblue Fantasy Relink I’m in there like swim wear. Also FF7 Rebirth has been so good so far hopefully you play it one day. it definitely falls in line with the points made in this video but does a good job keeping you invested some how. L

Hey I love all the games you mentioned sticking to! (Expect valorant that game is horrible) You know it isn't that deep right? You can buy a game and not play it. It's really up to you as an individual..noone is making you play new releases at gunpoint 😂 also no one is even making you buy them. So it doesn't have some deep crazy meaning, it's literally just a case of , you don't feel like it right now and you will play it when you feel like it

I had this experience with FF7 remake. The reason is simple, the game was boring AF and had trauma HUD from FF13. also combat was a mess. they could have gone with Nier Automata formula instead. And FF15 lost me at tutorial...couldn't bear it. Plus, if new games are properly made, they can ease you into it.

My personal advice, set up short and achieveable goals within the games you play. For example, gaining a lvl or 2 on my characters Recently I used this to get into elden ring, in that particular game I set myself a goal of killing at least 2 bosses esch day, by the time I knew it, I was in. Also watchout for predatory BS GaaS model games that reward daily play, these games are often a time sink and use daily rewards to form a habit in its players, you know trash like genshin impact and honkai, games like these can easily it up time you could be investing in other games.

This doesn't seem to apply to me. I do have the problem of not wanting to play some new ganes even if I'm actually enjoying them. Mario Wonder for instance is very good and fun, but I drop it within a few minutes. I'm enjoying FF7R but I can't help but want to stop playing pretty quickly too. Yet, I just finished sinking like 100 hours into the new Like a Dragon no problem, and I'm around another 100 hours and counting into the Granblue Relink. Could just be ADHD brain being picky, but I really do want to finish these games I'm clearly enjoying a lot but can't keep my attention for long
