Let me know if you have ever noticed how often precast concrete steps sink and fail. It is mainly due to poor installation but they just seem to fail more than any other step options for your home... I always auger two 18" holes to beneath the Frostline under all my steps and then build on top of that!

It would be nice if more people did that... or at least some kind of prep other than laying blocks on dirt, then setting the steps on them....

I wish I had seen this video before. I was just at the landscape company and bought two precast hollow core steps with 2 fillers to make two steps from our patio door to the paver patio that I hope to finish in the next month. I bought the 4 foot steps because they were only 220lbs so I could move them without a machine. Have you ever installed them? I'm wondering if I should just install them on a 7" base of gravel or if I should make a 4" concrete pad with rebar as a base. These steps are hollow in the center but have approximately 2" of concrete lip all around the base. Any suggestions before I install them?

It was a very fun project. I have done quite a few sets of steps in my career, certainly a challenge, but awesome sense of accomplishment when your done. ✌
