🎯 I'm ditching onboard sounds from physical keyboards and sound modules and playing LIVE with 100% softsynth virtual instruments!!!
I recommend the Mac Mini (2012 Version) NOT the newer models from 2014/15...
Mac Mini VS Macbook:
1. Dollar to Dollar the Mac Mini + Monitor + keyboard + trackpad is less expensive than a comparable Macbook Pro with similar specs.
2. If something happens to my monitor/keyboard/trackpad, I can easily and quickly pick up another one from a store nearby... If something happens to the screen on a Macbook, I'd be without my entire computer until it is repaired.
3. For some reason, EVERY Macbook I've owned, I have to buy multiple power cables (strange, but I haven't had this problem with my Macbook Air... also, EVERY Macbook Pro that I've owned (3 different ones) all have had to go to the Apple store for one reason or another, from a faulty screen to the motherboard, to the keyboard keys being stuck, or popped off...etc....
4. I ONLY prefer the Macbook over the Mac Mini in the area of "convenience"... You can simply turn the Macbook and get started on your work, without any cables or wires... The Mac Mini has to be powered up via a power cable at all times... So, I only travel and use it at home and at church - what I did was I purchase an extra power cable, 2 monitors, 2 keyboards and 2 trackpads... One stays at home and the other remains at church, so I just grab the box and throw it in my back - no cables, nothing but the Mac Mini!!! ;)

"They can do a whole lot more" the same phrase we heard when digital synths killed off analog synths but now we all want our analog gear back hence the huge market for remakes&re-released gear. I run a hybrid rig with 3 keyboards linked tomy laptop but find myself reaching for my analog boards more often because of the real user interface...

I'm tired of lugging around a MOX8, so I'm more than intrigued by your setup. I've already started pricing all of the hardware you use although I'll probably go with the laptop for portability. I have to say, the first time I watched this video, I had no clue what you were talking about. But since I've done some research, including other software options, I've come back to this and each of the 10 times I've watched I learn something new. Thanks bro, can't wait for Part II.

I agree.. i used mainstage and addictive keys.. but sometimes i still use my rack modules (mks20, motif es rack, jv-2080). Because i notice tha warmer sounds of the real hardware synths.. so in short, depends upon my mood. im a fan of both and i used both.. thanks alot sir for your reviews😀👍🏼 God bless

Thanks for the video. I currently switched over from using Native Insruments Kontakt directly to use MainStage in order to combine Kontakt Plugins with FM8 and some AUs from apple. It's really interesting to see how different people are using this software and hence how flexible it is. Your approach is more the way I used to have in Kontakt where it loaded every plugin at once and then I could select through the midi channel wich one to user from there. In MainStage I prepared some patches that define one layer on each of my two keyboards. I then build up a set where I reference patches as an alias into the patches I define inside a patch. So I just have to define two buttons that move up and down inside this set and a patch for every song that will come up in a concert.

The LDP controller comes with software that can change the mode of the pads to toggle mode (light on pad turns on/off on press). Might be useful with this setup :)
@martinocando3072
@martinocando3072 7 лет назад
There is one huge advantage about soft synths vs hardware synths, particularly for me. In my case, I can simply carry my Laptop whenever I go, and just plug in any controller, and I can perform with all my sounds, not having to carry around heavy gear. And with just a Korg nanokontrol, which is super light and small, I can have all the program changers, faders and volume controls on the road.

"if you get a solid computer ..." - it will still crash from time to time :-D I played live with 2 different macs for a couple of years - one was the plasticky white first-gen intel core duo 2, later upgraded to the unibody metal macbook pro. and i still got problems from time to time. not often but let's say one in 80 shows SOME problem would pop up, ranging from "hanging key", to hung plugin, sound card acting up etc... usually a restart would fix that but that's not something you wanna do mid-show. So i switched back to hardware synths for live (on the other hand i go almost 100% soft synths in the studio) One more story for ya - I play in a backing band for a (minor) pop singer here where i live. She has 2 keyboard players, the other guy uses a combination of analog gear and previous-gen macbook pro with a frikin 1100EUR RME Fireface UCX audio interface and guess what - last gig, around second song - a wild latency issue appeared!!! all of his notes were audibly late - looked like he can't play! :-D we laughed our a**s off with the drummer. of course a restart of the whole machine fixed it but there was only enough time for it after like 4 songs that he had to suffer through. so yeah - it's MOSTLY reliable, i'd say around 95-99% but those 1-5% hurt when they come... and if you play more than 100 shows a year, it means that once a year, murphy's law says that it'll be the biggest show of the year, your gear will cause you some rough time.
@kenhimurabr

That's why you should have a second computer as backup ready to go (or even a third one), as the majority of "blockbusters live bands" does.

2 Options for the controller Guy's, you can have 1 midi controller + A cheaper backup Hardware keyboard or if you wish, you can have your standard macbook and an old iphone 6 or SE with nothing else but just Sampletank. That is the nearest thing to real hardware I've tested in terms of stability. Very powerful and very light.

Luca Mattioni It also sounds like a pain to hook up computers, move mouses, and the worry of computers clashing etc. You’ve gotta bring your laptop chargers etc. It’s not for me, but I love there’s other options for live sounds.

Even though may say to use the Roli instruments as an additional device, we are going to try it a our main instrument (for my wife) and also supplement it with Roli Lightpad M to add some beats. Love to hear your thoughts as I have a large learning curve helping her get started. She has been just singing and playing a Roland full length weighted for 10 years. No software of effects.
