Why Qantas Didn’t Choose The Boeing 777X For Project Sunrise

Like many things across the aviation industry, Project Sunrise came to a temporary but sudden halt this year. The ultra-long-haul flights were to revolutionize the way we traveled. Before the project was put on hold, Qantas picked a modified version of the Airbus A350-1000 to operate the flights. The alternative option was Boeing’s 777X. In these things, we always hear about the winner. But why didn’t Qantas choose the Boeing 777X for Project Sunrise?

Qantas have said that they also chose the A350 because of its compatibility with the A330. Currently (or at least before the pandemic) the A330 is the aircraft of choice for the airlines flights to Asia, and the airline liked the idea of having crews able to switch between the two types. Also QF have been looking at their short-haul domestic fleet as a refresh is near due. Following the QANTAS Group’s recent order of of some long range A320’s (most likely destined for Jetstar, although they haven’t ruled out using them in the Qantas fleet), there is speculation that QF may be moving towards a majority Airbus fleet for the future. The A220 would also make an excellent replacement for their ageing 717 regional fleet.

Boeing's latest delay in the 777X meant that Qantas' decision to order the A350-1000 is absolutely the right decision. It will be easier to transition A380 and A330 pilots to the A350 as they share the same type rating. They just need differential training. As the Qantas fleet evolves in future, it is good that pilot pools don't cause too much of a headache for them.

The A350-1000 takes significantly less payload so you need to compare the figures as fuel used per seat. No, larger 779 is not capable to fly even PER-LHR. It would be 778 to do the flying, and it’s almost as large as 35K. But the problem is 778 efficiency would be horrible compared to the more modern 35K.

@@steinwaldmadchen Whether or not the 778's efficiency is horrible or fantastic is still unknown, because it hasn't even flown yet. Qantas picked the A35K because it's already available. Also, the 779 is too big for this route.
@steinwaldmadchen
@steinwaldmadchen 3 года назад
@@electric7487 But the fuel burn of a 77W is known, and A350's advantage is ~25%. GE9X would bring ~10% improvement over GE90, while wings and aerodynamic tweaks minus weight penalty a few more. That's still a 10ish gap, which 779 matched by stretching the frame, therefore lower per capita figure. If everything go right that could put 779 ahead of A350 (which is difficult imo), but not 778. Meanwhile, sharing the same wing, engine and MTOW, meaning 779 would never replicate 778's payload-range capability, as the former is heavier, burns more, carry less fuel at MTOW and therefore can’t fly that far.

Your assessment is flipped. The reason why the A350 won was because Airbus was giving them about 75% off for the aircraft. (not to mention they didn't even require them to sign off on the plane) About a week before they made their decision, Qantas said they had a winner, but they wanted the price to come down. When they made the announcement, they had indicated that they had flipped choices. According to one of your own videos, the 777X is pretty pricey, at somewhere in the $400 million range, were the A350 is in the upper $300 millions range at list prices. If anything, the 777 has the better track record and is more fuel efficient that the A350 because it can pull off these routes at full capacity with no need for an optional tank. But, in a bit of irony, it was probably also the fact that Qantas made it clear they wanted the 777-8 not the -9 which could make the flight at MTOW, but that option is indefinitely delayed.

@@chrismckellar9350 Yeah, Airbus has been doing a lot of those deals, however right before the Pandemic the legality of these deals came into question because they were using unfair grants and zero and negative interest loans given to them by the EU. They weren't even trying to hide that fact anymore. With the Pandemic, I wonder if the EU will be able to back these. @@jhmcd2 It's similar to what happen with Hawaiian and their A330-800neo and Boeing's heavy discount for their B787. B777X doesn't have any track record yet, since it's brand new. A350-900, A350-900ULR and A350-1000 have few years of a great track record. There are tons of modifications boeing had done to B777X., from engines, wings, cockpit, higher percentages of composite materials used on the production and thinner fuselage thickness. It would be quite different compared to the first-gen B777. So I wouldn't use first-gen B777 reliability for comparisons.
@jhmcd2
@jhmcd2 Год назад
@Roger Actually, according the Reuters they were giving them 75% off the aircraft. In fact, Qantas even stated that it was the fact that Boeing didn't want to meet this which was their final factor in choosing the Airbus. Also, I've flown Airbus and Boeing jets back to back, the 777 and an A380, the 737 and the A320, and the A320 and the 777 and 747. In each case, the Boeing jets were actually quieter, including the A380. Ride quality is irrelevant because that depends on weather, but then again I would expect someone with a brain to know that, and they are not more efficient. Traditionally speaking, Airbus jets have fewer seats in their seize class versus their Boeing counterparts. On the surface, Airbus jets are about 10% more efficient in certain cases (and I mean certain), however, when you break it down to a per seat basis Boeing jets are nearly always more efficient, usually as much as 15%.

@Roger Hate to see which Airforce you flew with. I am a commercial pilot, I'm in these things all the time. I do not know about the a350, haven't been in one yet, but I have been in an A380 and a 777 back to back and, there isn't much of a difference. As for the 320...nope, and I can prove it. I was trying to do a full flight video on my last trip before the pandemic and flew on a 737 and a A320 back to back. The 320 was far louder and it is audible on film. As for ride comfort, there are some systems and wing designs that can yield a more comfortable ride, but Boeing traditionally uses those not Airbus. Things like gull wings, winglets and some automated features help ride, but overall, it's still up to the weather. So...your argument is dead...so stop bothering me.

@@chrismckellar9350 the A350-1000ULR is merely an increase MTOW of the current stock aircraft. I do not recall it has any additional fuel tanks and uprated engines. The current 4 operators of the A350-1000 (CX, BA and Virgin) seats between 331-335pax in 3 class. Only Qatar Airways seats 327pax in 2 class. The 777X isn't a composite plane so doesn't that mean the cabin pressure is different to the A350 similar to the 787. After a long flight you would arrive feeling much better in a cabin that has a lower altitude pressure.

Qantas currently operates 787s, so differences training to the 777 is probably reasonable enough. However the 787 currently operates their 12hr+ flights. They also operate A330s on flights up to 10hrs or so. These pilots can be up-skilled to the A350 in a similarly short time period. However, one of the components of the Project Sunrise package was an agreement with the pilots unions for such long journeys. With the Boeing crew already flying those long missions, tacking on an extra 2hrs doesn't seem like you'd need much of an agreement change. For the Airbus crews on the A330s, taking a 10hr flight shift up to a 18hr flight shift would need some negotiations. They also have A380 in the fleet mix, so there's probably a larger pool of potential pilots available for training than Boeing pilots in their ranks. This would most definitely play a factor in their decision making.
@NoRegertsHere
@NoRegertsHere 3 года назад
Adam Kellehear the Pilot deal was signed. Compared to the new 787 deal signed a few years earlier, it’s 20% more work for 5% more pay. Compared to what the 380 contract would’ve paid, it’s 25% more work for about 30% less pay. Edit: illegal worldwide to do the length of shift required for the flying, so lots of work was done there too. That’s not a pilot association thing, that’s a government department thing.
@garyhughes9649
@garyhughes9649 3 года назад
Adam the one thing I notice with the points you made is I don't see a380s flying much longer as their operating cost per hour is very very high and almost comprable twinjets are doing the a380s job much much cheaper someone last hordes of people suddenly want to make that Journey then the A380 I think we'll quit fairly soon the 747 might last a little longer well the freight version wheel but the passenger version is a little cheaper than the A380 so the 747 life might be a little longer than the A380 but that's speculation there's a lot up in the air right now no pun intended.
@the_singingavgeek3433
@the_singingavgeek3433 3 года назад
I don't see why Qantas couldn't just order both. So then they could retire their aging A330's with the A350's and train the A330 pilots on the new Airbus. And the airline could just train some ex-747 pilots for the 777 so the airline would not have to outsource pilots from other countries like they were planning on doing.

A330s are used on some domestic routes in Australia where the A350 wouldn't be cost efficient. Qantas will either order the A330neo to replace the A330ceos or they'll have a look at the Boeing NMA when it finally arrives.

There is a fundamental flaw in logic here. The Boeing 777-9 is the WRONG airplane to consider against the A350-1000. Project Sunrise ISNT about the kind of capacity the -9 offers, but range and fuel economy which the in-limbo -8 model does in spades. Capacity-wise the A350-1000 and 777-8 are similar. The weight advantage, less for of the longer, skinner, lighter A350-1000, will be hard to pass up. To take the cake, Boeing needs an all-carbon fuselage, still lacking. In doubt, we may never see the 777-8. What might be interesting is a 787-11 with most of the 777 wing as a better, lighter match against the A350-1000.

QANTAS connects to foreign cities where there is a reasonable amount of business related travel to maximise the passengers in premium classes with higher profit margins. These cities tend to be a long way from Australia and QANTAS often does not have carriage rights to intermediate ports from non-Australian cities. The medium haul, leisure markets are served by Jetstar which is the QANTAS low cost carrier which tries to operate on high passenger volumes with lower cost on shorter routes.

The choice must be a source of concern for Boeing. I understand that the Boeing contender was the B777-8. I deeply doubt that it will ever fly. With the fall down of traffic in the wide body market, Boeing is facing a lack of demand for the B777X. The cargo version will certainly be the second plane to be launched after the B777-9. Airbus won't make any profit from that project but it will be prestigious to fly for Qantas. Another blow for Boeing. The future is not so bright anymore for the US plane maker...
