You know though also if you're offered tea and you really actually want a cup you can say straight away eg "oh I'm gasping, I'd love a cup" ....that's acceptable also and makes host feel like they're giving g u a pot of gold!!😅

The playful splash of the tea as it hits the bottom of the cup. The thrill of adding the milk and watching it settle for a moment, before it filters slowly down to the bottom of the cup changing the colour from dark brown to… a lighter brown. Perching an optional jaffa cake on the saucer like a proud soldier standing to attention beside a giant… cup of tea!’ Magnificent. Mrs &@?!+$ Doyle.

That discussion about tips is particularly interesting. I learned once that "tip" is actually an acronym: To Insure Promptness. According to the account I read, hostelries used to have a wooden box bearing those words, and guests could place coins into it to reward servants for having dealt with them promptly. If that is true, tipping therefore began as a means of incentivising rapid service. Incidentally, regarding tipping in the US, I remember my Irish grandmother forgetting to do so when we were visiting Las Vegas. The server returned her change with the words "God bless you, Ma'am" in a somewhat pained tone of voice - it took us all too long to realise how we had wronged him... Here in the UK, one increasingly finds card machines that will show you the bill and then bring up another screen: "Do you wish to add a tip / gratuity?" If you select "Yes," you can then input the monetary figure you're willing to add. Apparently, under such a system, at the end of the day all tips are added together and shared equally between all the staff. The business of declining an offered item can be (but is not always) based upon the self-interest or wishes of the host. "Would you like that last biscuit?" may supposedly be shorthand for "I really want that last biscuit, but I'm going to offer it to you." I don't blame Ashton for his bewilderment here; I share it with him! Tea... There's a subject I love! It doesn't surprise me that most Americans don't care about it ( Boston - and we might note that on both sides of the Atlantic three centuries ago, tea was one of the most adulterated products ever traded, with up to 50% of a typical shipment potentially comprising sawdust or worse, in order to improve the merchant's profit margins) but on the matter of the Irish appreciation for it, I reckon it may tickle you to learn that one of my favourite tea shops in the town where I work has an Irish Breakfast blend. It's like an English Breakfast blend (Keemun, Assam and the like) but it's stronger: "not quite so strong that you could stand your spoon up in it," but satisfyingly bright. If the two of you ever make it to the UK, I would gladly treat you to some. (Perhaps I could send a packet over, if I can get it through the red tape of international delivery from post-Brexit Britain?!)

I've only stumbled on your channel & I'm enjoying the content ,tipping in Ireland isn't as important as the hospitality service is well paid ,in the USA the waiters & waitresses depend on tips , but I like to leave a tip ,my Canadian friend told me she was visiting Ireland some years ago & left a tip after enjoying her meal & the waitress followed her to give it back , Tea is hugely important in Irish life , it's just part of our culture ,of the house falls down we would put on the kettle 😅. And yeah we all say bye bye bye bye bye bye .....😅

There were 3 topics in this video that could be seen as disregard for time in the Irish culture. As a hobby anthropologist I think it's just related to how urban and metropolitan a culture is, because in those, time becomes more precious, whereas in more rural cultures with a lower population, bonding and social interactions are more important in comparison.

In the south in the US, it's definitely like Ireland when trying to end a phone call or go your way after visiting. It could take from 15 minutes to over an hour. It would be considered rude if you try to leave before the other is finished telling a story or explaining a subject.

Oh, this is been a tradition in my family as an after dinner you would have like coffee and dessert, or for some people would be tea and dessert and we would also prior to eating if you wanted to have like a snack and they would usually be like unhealthy options and healthy options, available before dinner wizard And my family always does. This just was a ongoing thing. This wasn’t just holidays. It was done not so much anymore now that my grandparents and my great grandparents are no longer with us the families don’t get together and do this anymore like they do on a regular basis when they were around, but there’s also was passed down for those in the family to do that as a tradition in their own homes in their own families lives, but not too many kept that tradition going. Just like family reunions, they happened like clockwork and if my great grandparents or my grandparents had to personally come drag your butt to the family function and get together, they would be dragging you by your ears. Literally they wouldn’t be too happy and neither would you and that would remind you that you would not do that again you would have to be seriously sick or in the hospital not to attend every single year year-round Family get together/family reunion truly it was studying sudden stone always passed down through all generations that you were to meet up every year as a family unit everyone and when I mean every single body, I mean their kids, their kids, kids, any of your kids, kids, etc. no exceptions and less that you were hospitalized or really sick. It was mandatory to be among family for a family reunion every year and I miss that immensely so much but since the generation before her us have passed, no one is even doing that anymore. We can barely get everybody together during any major holiday, which is extremely heartbreaking. It’s like families now are treating one another like acquaintances when it’s just not how things should be don’t give me wrong for the most part we always get together on either Christmas Eve unless like everybody’s having a rough time in something like major happens in and around everyone’s lives, we would always get together every year during the traditional American Christmas holiday which in my opinion there should not be a holiday for you to ““want to spend quality time with family members like every year is not gonna hurt nobody and I know that siblings can get on siblings, nerves, etc. etc. it’s just how it is and no one’s perfect come on families family and you know darn well if anything would happen to them you would be running real quick to make sure that you do anything and everything to make sure they’re OK I think everyone can agree on that one.

Another job well done. Love your glimpses into Irish vs American culture. The etiquette items were great to know. The Irish I've met seem too nice & hospitable to directly point out mistakes to yanks like me. I do make an effort to learn basic local etiquette wherever I travel. Plus learn a few courtesy words and phrases in other countries where that's warranted. Looking forward to any "Part 2" videos you may care to do plus new topics in the series. It's fun seeing you and Ashton learn and laugh-it-out together as you explore various subjects.

The reason the center lines on the roadway in Ireland are white and not yellow. The street lights in Ireland comply with European standards and are yellow as are the head lights on vehicles. So having yellow centerlines would make the more difficult to see.

My older Irish female relatives would never want anything to be too successful because then they thought they'd end up having to to pay some kind of penance for it. And when they complained about something, the worst thing you could do would be to fix it for them, because depriving them of the thing to complain about was far more burdensome than the original problem, and your carefully fixed or specially bought item would never be touched!

There are some similarities between Irish and Southern USA etiquette. Over using the word sorry and initially refusing something that is offered are very Appalachian. So is bye bye ping pong (great description). Not as much as when I was younger but it's still a thing. It makes sense considering how many Irish emigrants settled this part of the USA. I think the traits probably lasted longer here because of how isolated this part of the country was until the latter half of the 20th century.

Some places it varies like some places will take it out automatically out of your bill, but there’s also other places that you would tip the waitresses, but I’d rather tip them like personally from my hand to their hand because I wouldn’t want anybody taking it off the table, I would never leave a tip behind on a table too high of a risk of somebody yanking it off the table, and the waitress not getting it, and sometimes at certain restaurants, the owners of them Will tell the waitresses to get all the tips and put them in a jar or certain area and then they’ll divvy it out equally among all the waitresses I know of a quality places I have done that which I think is that I think if the waitress earned those tips, especially let’s say they busted the table that was over 100 people And did a really good job and got a really good tip. It shouldn’t be W down towards other waitresses because I would really be there but there’s restaurants that actually do that they will take all the tips and gather them from every employee and then half them equally across-the-board, which I don’t think is right, but there’s restaurant owners that do this, in my opinion, a lot of waitresses are working those jobs so they can pay towards tuition or as a secondary job to help pay their bills, etc. so keep that in mind when a waitress is tending to you when she’s taking you’re order and is really a very nice pleasant waitress and will take care of anything that might happen. That is not the waitresses fault that might be on the end of those that cook in the back etc. because that happens from time to time to where it service will be somewhat not great and technically will not always be the waitresses fault. You’ll be somebody that messed up your order in the back and read the receipts wrong whether they’re printed out or written out and make a Wrong Mill for you I put different items on that you didn’t order or for example mess up your order immensely by over cooking something or just having everything cold because it’s been sitting for so long because they didn’t make sure the waitress knew right away or the way they manage which is the minute management side of things is not managing how their system works properly which can make orders drag behind, etc. so keep in mind those things that have to do with other parts of the business that can trickle down to the waitress being affected by it and that most of those that are waitressing or doing this for extra money, whether it’s to pay for daycare or pay for putting towards college etc. it’s more likely a secondary job and there’s some it’s a full-time job for them and tips alone is not gonna pay your bills so like truly be kind to your waitresses specially, if they go all the way in the the best waitress they can along with all the things that I explained in the comment that do player role sometimes in the way restaurants are run improperly, and it starts with management and other groups of people that are part of the service that you do get taken affect your service. They have nothing to do with the waitress at all which is a brings your food to you make sure that your drinks are refilled etc. they can’t help if staff and other areas drop the ball when it comes to either the service of your food getting out on time that’s a management end of things, or when it comes to the running of the kitchen stuff and what might transpire and fail on that side of things

No, yes, some restaurants we can leave tips for a waitress on the table but I never like doing that considering anybody and their brother can just walk up to your table that you just walked away from and just take the money that’s meant for the waitress off the table can’t trust nobody And also I like paying the bill like directly at the register even though some restaurants now or lowering you the pay at the table but there’s to meet people like right around you and next to you they can be like trying to skim over and see what your card number is and all that shit I don’t like that There’s too many thieves nowadays along with pickpockets, etc. on the list goes on

Do you know what I kind of agree with her on the whole taking somebody’s dishes away from the table before someone else that sitting with them at the table is done is kind of like whatever you were in mid conversation and had a really intense engaging conversation going on and then all of a sudden waiter just walks up all thee sudden grabs only one person’s dish that’s done dishes away cause you’re done an others around you were not done. It just seemed a little offputting And I kind of agree with her. Why don’t you just come gather up everything once everybody’s done but I will let you know not all restaurants will take your plates while you’re eating and the other person is done because I’ve been to restaurants where they have waiting till everybody has done either meals and been finished with everything so I get it from both ends, but I’d rather have somebody take all the stuff off the table when everybody’s done and they’re up and ready to leave and paying for the bill Especially if you are out with a business dinner, and then waiters keep on interrupting regional over grabbing peoples plates they consider it a polite thing to do to try to clear the table but unless you feel that there’s too much stuff and it’s cluttered where you can’t move around while you’re at the table that’s one thing but it’s not disturbing anyone. Just leave it until everybody’s done and then come back when everybody gets up and pays for the bill and there’s Already gone then take the plates and silverware and all that away

Another etiquette thing is manners we always seem to give better charm to those who say thankyou my apologies your welcome another is we wait for someone to compliment us when we have something extra also another of tea is to offer a snack also in snooker we tend to put 2pence on the side of the table as a marker to know it's your turn when the other two have finished but prime example of etiguette is the historic manners in parliament

The point of the tip is silly in my opinion as if your job is dependant on their work or the way they treat you then you shouldn't be the one to pay them extra. That's the point of them being employed. They are working for money and their boss should be paying them. If someone is above and beyond then sure yeah you could give them extra but that should never be on you.

And anybody that goes to Restaurant and maybe heads up to the bar sometime just to hang out for a minute and grab a drink or something make sure to tip the bartender they put up with a heck of a lot of crap. They have to be peoples babysitters counselors and a lot more especially at places that are grandfathered in that are open a lot later, at night they get the rest of what everybody else got prior to end or even more intoxicated and more belligerent, and if I was them, I would not service people more and more than a custom to be OK with allowing somebody to just go on their merry way being, and never rated past the point of liberation And restaurants bars, especially those that run. These establishments should have better policies in place because it really doesn’t fall on the employees so much as it does those that run these restaurants and bars the reason why I say this is because they usually have to go to be the rules of how a person that’s running or on the restaurant flash or bar wants it to be run but morally most bartenders will not feel comfortable serving anyone that is highly inebriated already, but as a business standpoint owners managers will be like no you’re serving them but Morley you know you shouldn’t. It’s either your job or you serve them. My problem is what that is allowing them to leave your establishment. That way there should be a mandatory hate your keys and wallet if you’re going to really drink, it’s mandatory to handover your drivers license and keys and if they feel that you are not inebriated or toxic Kaydet to drive and even then even like three or four drinks is over the limit it’s always best to bring somebody that’s sober along to hang out with you or make sure that you have arrangements for a ride home whether that be someone that called to come pick you up or you have a Uber or Lyft driver come get you but I think it’s absolutely should be unless that every establishment especially when they know people are drinking past the legal limit should be automatically handing over their licenses and keys, and will not get them back until they know and a red shirt and can see physically with your own eyes that there’s a neighborhood a person is getting into a vehicle with a responsible driver or Lyft Uber or cab know I understand that like well, a waitress can’t sit there and watch every single person and make sure that they are getting into a sober ride that’s where management and owners play a role in this where they hire security guards and other extra stuff that will make sure ones that person is getting ready to pay off their bill that the waitress turns over the keys to the person that will be responsible to make sure this person gets into a vehicle with someone that’s sober or a rideshare vehicle or cab tell me what you thought about the shit are in the comments below 👇🏾

I’m bringing these factors up because I know personally how this can affect a whole entire family or generation of family members lifelong by them, losing a loved one due to their bad decisions that can cause them and others their life and also personally my father was killed by a vehicle While crossing the road, so some of these things are a little bit personal and there’s not many people in this life nowadays that are responsible grown adults and it’s hard to put measures in place unless somebody that runs establishment is going to put the time and money into doing so because bartenders have a lot on their plate. Just dealing with those that get an levirate is past the point of a liberation and most that are smart cut them off immediately when they get way too out of hand, but it was definitely the factor of after the fact that they were liberated you don’t want somebody like that getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, but staff members that are there or not gonna be able to serve people babysit people that are still hanging out in the bar on top of trying to make sure that they’re not getting into a vehicle driving intoxicated They would have to be other extra staff including security, which an owner and management would have to put in place so it could be regulated that you know somebody’s getting into a silver persons vehicle driving them home or getting into a car share ride such as Lyft, Uber, taxi cab

Well in the United States waiters and waitresses don’t get paid the minimum wage. They live off their tiffs this is from when slavery ended and most servers were African-American black. They weren’t paid I would rely on their tips and it still here in 2022

I am completely against the U.S. tipping culture. I refuse to participate in a system that allows businesses to offload the burden of paying their employees a fair wage to the customers. It is wrong that these businesses who make more than the average American salary, pocket all the money and not pay their employees fairly. I think that anyone that participates in the tipping culture is only perpetuating the problem. The only way these businesses will ever be held accountable is for the general public to stop enabling them by tipping. The less people tip, the more pressure they face to actually pay their employees a fair wage. The employees also need to play their part by quitting and going to other jobs that pay a better wage instead of taking their outrage on the poor customers who are just trying to pay for their meal and nothing extra.

20% tip!!!!! That’s kind of extortion. I really hate that the explanation is there, even for average service.
