The NFL is 100% about maximizing profits right now. Everything else is a distant second. That includes quality of players, quality of officiating, and player safety.
Totally agree. I see guys like Trevor Lawrence for example throwing to receivers across the middle right into the defender and the defender literally unable to do anything about it and gets flagged for 15 yards. Are you kidding me? Don't make that throw. They're punishing defenses for offensive mistakes to quote Brady again. Then they're throwing stupid flags for taunting. Gimme a break
Brady always said he tried to protect his receivers. Against the Ravens Tom Brady wouldn't throw across the middle of the field because of Ray Lewis. He didn't want one of his teammates to get injured.
Not every backup QB can be as altruistic as Josh Dobbs and Taylor Heinicke. Those guys are ballers, but they realize it's not worth it anymore to push for a starting job. So they choose to settle for a 7-figure annual salary while not being as banged up as the guy ahead of the depth chart.
It’s also a transition out of an historic QB era. With 8 of the Top 11 All-Time Passing leaders either retired or probably gone in 2-3 seasons, here’s a snapshot of them from 2019 - just 4 seasons ago Brady - 16 games, 4057yds, 24TDs Brees - 11 games, 2979yds, 27TDs Rivers - 16 games, 4615yds, 23TDs Ryan - 15 games, 4466yds, 26TDs Rodgers - 16 games, 4002yds, 26TDs Eli - 4 games Roethlisberger - 2 games It’s a decent vacuum that is very difficult to fill. Every Patriots, Saints, Chargers, Hawks, Steelers, Packers and Giants’ QB will be compared to Tom, Drew, Philip, Matt, Ben, Aaron and Eli for a LONG time !!!
I love stats and data 📊. Thanks for putting this up. So now the question is, who’s going to replace those HOF’ers? Granted, it took each one of them to become as great as they are.
1972 - The 17- 0 undefeated Dolphins QB's threw for a grand total of 14 TD's all season 2002 - Brady led the NFL in passing TD's with only 28 And DOME QB's vs Non DOME QB's have a massive advantage. Brady played 90% of his career 8 times a year at cold and windy Foxborough Manning and Brees played almost the same amount of games under the DOME I can only imagine Brady's numbers if he played his entire career at home under a Dome. I told a buddy to try this. Play pass with a football in a warm gym inside in December then go outside and play with the wind at 36 MPH and -6 degrees. I respect guy's like Brady, Rodgers, Favre .. Not so much Manning or Brees.
@therotten6152 Look at around 2009 or 2010. That was a damn golden era of QB play compared to now. Old guys like Favre and Warner, with lesser old guys like McNabbb, Delhomme, Hasselbeck, Then you had the 'new guard' of Peyton, Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Roethlisberger, Rivers, Ryan, Stafford, Flacco, etc. And then the 'Serviceable or better' group of QBs like Romo, Palmer, Schaub, Dalton, Cutler, Orton, Alex Smith, Fitzmagic, hell even Mark Sanchez made the AFCCG at that time. Thats like 2 dozen QBs who ALL had pretty damn good careers aside from maybe Schaub and Sanchez, who both had a handful of really good seasons. Nowadays you have half of the league with a horrible QB situation. Mac/Zappe, Fields/Bagent, Pickett, Wilson/Boyle, Watson/DTR, JimmyG/O'Connell, Minshew/Richardson, Jones/Devito, Love, Dobbs, Bryce Young, Ridder, Levis/Tannehill, and even Stafford has sucked. That's half of the league with no chance against a good roster. Pretty sad that Minshew and Dobbs are 2 of the best on that entire list
I noticed for a few years just how poor the tackling is in the NFL. It has to be the worst of any contact sport and this year has been particularly awful.
Defenders get their hands and arms on a ball carrier and they slip through with ease when they should have been tackled for a loss. When a defender has his arms all over the player they should not be able to get away and gain 20 yards. But it happens all the time. I see it every game. This would not have made Vince Lombardi happy. Butts would be kicked.
@@HungryH1951I’d like to see what Vince Lombardi would say to his team trying to tackle monsters like Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf or even Josh Allen. 6’6” 250lb QB’s who can run over or through anybody on the field didn’t exist 70 years ago…they didn’t even exist 30 years ago. The game is played by the biggest, strongest, fastest humans on this planet.
Tackling is bad because no one actually tackles. Everyone runs around trying to do collision hits with their head and they never even attempt a real tackle. They all draw in their little T-Rex arms and launch.
except he lacks critical thought. The media and people like Eisen share blame. If a QB is drafted round 1 and they don't look like a future HOF by mid season, the media and Rich pan them as terrible, then the team cuts the player leaving no development.
@@beargrills1290Well that’s not on Rich or the media though. You can say the backlash from the media can cause players to lose confidence which could then lead to poor play but if players get cut that’s because of their own poor play not because the media paned them as terrible.
And he doesn't dismiss what others who know what they are talking about say. Cowherd actually had the audacity and inflated self worth to get up there and say, "I disagree with Brady", and go into some idiotic diatribe like he's the expert. Like he knows more about any aspect of football than Brady does? That's why players and coaches get annoyed with the media. You get these guys who instead of listening and maybe learning something, think the coaches and players are idiots and they know better.
Games just don’t feel like a battle the way they once did. Every other play is a penalty, hitting the quarterback is a capital crime, finesse has usurped physicality.
i hear what is being said. However, these athletes are beasts- if you let them hit the QB as in the old days you will not have any starting QBs left- it is that simple. In addition, low score games are not in vogue now-
@@wiplash123987Bears are the same stage of rebuilding as Lions were last year. So hopefully we can turn things around. But yall have much better coaches. Much respect to Campbell, dudes awesome.
Thank you for saying this Rich. It’s an important conversation for the league’s future and you nailed it. You nailed basically every point eloquently. I do mostly blame the owners. They’re the ones most vested in this product and they allowed the players to continually water down practice. They’re also the ones who don’t think a minor league is worth the investment. They’re also the ones who keep voting on these rules changes. Please keep talking about this.
Everyone in the mlb thought minor leagues were stupid, until Branch Rickey (when he was with the cardinals before bringing in jackie robinson with the dodgers) started them to tons of criticism and skepticism. Those cardinals dominated until every other team made their own minor leagues
It was the NFLPA who got the change at the players request. It has zero to do with the league or the owners. Practice is shorter because that’s what the players wanted and got it in the NFLPA agreement.
@@LilSebastian_I'm not saying you're wrong, but from listening to players talk I don't think they like the NFLPA. Some of them make it sound like it was just a hill they chose to die on for bargaining power.
@jlrick98 It is a hill, but it's the only hill the players have. Without the NFLPA owners definitely would demand more from players, without added bonuses or pay.
I don't discount CTE and head injuries but there's gotta be way to split the difference and keep the game tough like it used to be, at this point just put flags on the players and call it flag football
I recently watch a game of the Steelers vs the Oilers from 1978. And it was the most entertaining game I ever saw!! By the 3rd quarter, the score was only 3 to 3 but the game was loaded with action!! So many fumbles and turnovers, 2 guys from each team left the game with broken ribs!! It was a nailbiter till the end!! Both teams hated each other and there were so many on field fights!! Real feud, real Football!!
The worst team of today would win any Superbowl in the 70s tho. Remember when we thought Refrigerator Perry was big? Todays O-line would truck ANY D-line, and today’s DE’s would be unblockable.
What keeps me from watching the NFL more are all the commercial breaks. Like a cartoonishly insane amount of commercials. The reason why I only watch NFL Redzone anymore
I record every game. I fast fwd through all the commercials. The game has usually been going about 1/2 hour before I turn on the recording. I never watch even one commercial.
I either watch redzone or just catch the highlights of games on RU-vid after that fact. I am not sitting through 3 hours of commercials and horrible refing to watch the 20 plays in the game that actually mattered.
The problem is that when these young QB’s don’t develop on the team timeline, they are quick to be called Bust by the media who then encourage their team to move on from them. We live in a disposable society and the qb is the 1st to be disposed of. On to the next.
100% true. It’s happening currently with my Bears. Justin Fields has a skill set that few QBs in the league possess but because our doofus coaching staff can’t build an offense for him, now we’re in the Caleb Williams sweepstakes. And guess what? We’ll probably ruin him too.
@@SunShine-xc6dh Funny, they used to say that about Lamar Jackson and then look what happened when they decided to build an offense around him instead of forcing him to run the Joe Flacco offense.
Rich's knowledge and level-headedness is like no one else in NFL media. He's willing to tell it like it is even when it's criticizing the product that it's his job to promote.
the only part where I feel like the product is bad is inconsistent reffing that cant have quick reviews for major calls and the miniscule amount of contact it takes to get a roughing the passer call. I think defenses have just gotten a bit smarter about stopping explosive player the last two years and guys are getting more injuries as other guys get bigger, faster stronger but tendons and ligaments simply dont.
The number of penalties has gotten so bad it's left the live game unwatchable for me !! The frustration of EVERYTHING being called has forced me to tape games enabling me to fast forward to see if the play counts !! I dont watch football to see middle aged men tell me why that perfect tackle was wrong !!!
Most of the time, the best way to watch a game is using the NLF You Tube game highlight videos; no filler plays, no TV ads, no long penalty discussions, not time outs or half time stoppage. Just all the important plays condensed in a 10 minute video. You can watch 6 games in 1 hour.
Agree. The only time I watch a live game now is if I'm bored and can't find anything else to do. End up just watching the game highlights on Hulu. The league has fallen a long way from where it used to be, and I couldn't care less.
Rich, I love the idea. These owners should get together and help develop these QBs. I'm with ya, this is ridiculous that seasons are thrown into the trash bin because our backups blow.
It’s also leading to the increase in player injuries. Joint and soft tissue injuries are increasing every year. They’re blaming it on the turf fields but I think it’s more related to lack of contact in practices
Rich is right - if I was a depth-chart player in the NFL, I would absolutely spend my spring in the XFL. In addition to staying in game-shape, the ability to take the opportunity for more coaching and additional eyes/feedback on your game. Might find a magical golden nugget that completely transforms your game and turns you into a high-demand starter in the NFL.
I have to disagree with Rich Eisen 100% and call BS. Look average size QB isn't even close to the 80's, 90's or 2000's. So you want to talk about QB's going down because of physical size. Also I never ever seen a backup QB outside of Steve Young or Aaron Rodgers that could take over for the starting QB and give you a chance to win. Backup QB was lucky to get 6 wins in a season if the starter went down. This offseason workout another BS call. Most players worked 2 a days or 3 a days before heat exhaustion became a problem.
@@Henderson1011won't be an issue for depth guys cause they hardly get any snaps and they're all usually getting cut at the end of the season. Totally worth it to just go play some Spring football.
Imagine not realizing that we are undergoing a shift from crazy hyper offense to defense. The pass rushers and corners in the league nowadays are insane. It’s a shift that’s been going on for almost a decade now
QBs also don't process a defense like the ol' days anymore. Most of them are too focused on being a dual-athlete with running ability that they never learn to stand in the pocket and deliver a strike while taking a hit. Instead they use their speed and shiftyness to try to gain a few yards, and don't gain as much experience as a true passer. Nowadays they are learning on the fly and it can make for a worse on-field product. I will give credit though, I think Lamar especially has shown dramatic improvement as a passer. Obviously Allen too, who had a totally jacked up throwing motion when he entered the league, but still doesn't have great decision making. Colleges also just use these athletes in this manner more, because they want to win and don't care about development as much as NFL teams obviously.
I have been asking this question of radio personalities and fans for 2 years now. I thought it would take more effect in 2022 but this year you see it. We went from 50pt shootouts in the Goff/Mahomes uprising to the literaly two best teams in the league struggling to score 20 on each other. And good coaches, like Bill and Tomlin and Reid, saw this ahead of time and tried to build their lineups to it. For some it just isn't working but this big debate in NE and PIT about QB play and play calling and "not exciting football" is quite literally a sign of the times whether it is working or not.
No. The League is a pendulum of D and O. It swings every decade or so. I am remembering the Bears and Ravens, and LT. If the rules and The League are going to make QB paramount? Good coaches and organizations say, How can we defeat this? Edge rushers are crazy gifted athletes, and should get their due. From a fan who enjoys defense, who enjoys great play from each side of the ball.
Totally agreed, great segment Rich! The NBA is finally putting more emphasis in its developmental league and I think it is paying some dividends than just drafting guys after one season of college ball, or even two seasons in college. You need to improve your depth in this day and age where guys seem to get hurt so much more often than in the past for a myriad of reasons (faster, stronger, less technically sound) players overall. I just caught Brady's interview with Stephen A. Smith and he said something that you never hear anybody around the game say, especially not from an offensive player, and that is that with all these rule changes that penalize the defense for hits or contact, how about the offensive players take some responsibility for being better at protecting themselves. He's right! There are WAY too many guys who have no clue how to get down at the right time, get out of bounds, or simply lower their pad level, things that guys were taught to do for GENERATIONS prior to this one in the last 10 years. My favorite thing about what he said was when he talked about playing against Ray Lewis and that vaunted Ravens defense. He said, "I didn't throw over the middle to my receivers because I didnt want to lose that receiver the next week. I had to find another way to beat them." Just the level of respect and fear he had for that opponent, and those defenses back in the day, MADE him have to adjust his game and be a better player. THAT is what's missing in today's game, that 'appropriate fear' teams have when facing each other because the level of physicality can end your season at any moment on any play. You couple that with Rich's point about developing talent in different leagues before guys come to the NFL, and it's no wonder we're seeing a lot of really ugly, low scoring, offensively and defensively inept games out there this season
It doesn't help that the most interesting play is a glorified qb sneak, that reffing is inconsistent, the defense isn't allowed to play, and players aren't allowed to have a personality.
We'll see where it goes from here--it's possible that this is just a period of transition. We lost Brady, Brees, Roethlisberger, Rivers, and Ryan all pretty much at once, much like 1983. That was the year that Howard Cosell had declared the NFL a "malignant bore" and quit Monday Night Football, and a lot of the stars of the '70s had either retired or were washing up. The Cowboys, Steelers, and Vikings were in decline. The rise of the Bears hadn't happened yet. Joe Montana and the Niners won a Super Bowl, but then finished 1982 with a losing record and just barely scraped into the '83 playoffs, so they weren't seen as legends yet. And of course there were the bad vibes of the '82 strike itself. The NFL was perceived as in trouble in '83 and a few years later that was all forgotten and the League had a new crop of superstars in Marino, Elway, Rice, LT, and others. Is that going to be true here? We can only wait and see.
I think you might be into something. I mean despite the mediocrity around the league, I have been very happy with how the Lions have been playing. They are winning games in all kinds of fashion. Plus the storyline of Goff being rejected by every and taking the team that no wanted to play for to the SB would be an insane one.
Grady Jarrett had an awesome sack on Tom Brady in 2022. Beautiful textbook sack. Put the Falcons in position to win. He was flagged for it. Bucs ended up winning. The NFL is not for me anymore.
And just in case you have selective memory keep in mind Brady's been sacked an astronomical NFL RECORD *564 times* about twice as many times as Montana was.
Very good points and very well said. The NFL should have no say what teams can do regarding THEIR off season to get BETTER. They start every year, learning on the fly, and preseason is a joke to starters because they just don't want to get hurt. Thanks for this video.
My only issue with Tom Brady's comments is that the rules allowed him to extend his career. But as soon as he retires, he calls the league soft. So, he takes advantage of the rules until he's done, then he ridicules the league for being soft. SMH
Man I love Tom and Bill, can't wait till Bill does his post-retirement Football Life type thing and has his own quotes like this. That man is the most persecuted guy who is good at his job and he has been a saint in patience never blowing up about it like other coaches.
Glad to hear Rich say this publicly. Staffs need year-round contact w/the roster. OTAs need to be mandatory and they have to play in at least one preseason game. Most of all, more padded practices during the week. Expanding the rosters would help a lot. Go to 60, dress 60 on Sunday. 3 QBs, 3 LTs, an extra corner, etc.
If you wanna make a change like that the NFLPA would have to agree. Since you add work for the player they would ask for something in return, maybe more days off during the season or higher share of the revenues and the owners would probably say no.
After the season you need a month to decompress and recover minimum that right there puts you at mid March, most of the guys in the NFL train and condition on they're time like Rice, Owens, Payton etc. it ultimately comes down to how bad do you want it?
Glad Brady said it .....the product is pretty abysmal for many games. It is clear the first 4 or 5 games are actually the pre-season and then injuries hit....but many teams want to bet on a rookie QB maybe being almost decent so they can field a team and not overpay for QB....so rookie QBs get rushed into starting where many could use a couple years to understand the game
You have to pay so much for your "franchise qb" who might be in reality just above average, and if you don't win a sb in the first few years you'll be screwed further down the line...
the NFL is diluting the game on behalf of corporate interests and casual fans. the league is okay with neglecting its base if it means maximizing profits at the expense of a quality on-field product. this generation of players is soft bc that's all they know.
I know I'll probably take crap for this, but I also think having quarterbacks rely more on their athletic ability has also been good for highlight reels but overall a net negative.
@@Enzo575 Yes, but that's because he's a thrower, first and foremost. There are a lot of guys in the league who are the opposite, and it does hurt passing games.
Yeah in everything there's going to be outliers like Patrick mahomes is awesome and I will not ever say otherwise. I also actually think Lamar is developing nicely as well, but that's probably because of all the reps he's taken.
Nah you are dead on! In college they don't gain the experience to stand up in the pocket and deliver a dart. They rely on speed and escapability, and broken down plays now instead. Not many guys with the playstyle of Jared Goff these days. Brady had the most insane pocket awareness of all time and could change the entire pocket with 1 small, subtle sidestep or step forward. Most guys today just don't learn that skill
It’s a reflection of a world that is softening everywhere. Tell me one industry that isn’t way more mediocre than it was 10-15 years ago. It’s much bigger and broader than the NFL. It’s a society wide issue.
There have always been a lot of bad teams in the NFL, they started changing the defensive rules back in the 70's because as Gil Brandt (GM of the Cowboys) said: 'the NFL got tired of games ending 10-3'....nobody wants to go back to a time where the Atlanta Falcons could give up 9 points a game and finish 7-7 like in 1977
70s,80s,and 90’s football was amazing. This product now is unwatchable. Protect the QB but it’s gone overboard. Every other play is pass interference or holding. I’m tired of seeing refs make horrible calls. Making RBs irrelevant is hurting the game also.
NFL players take their opportunities for granted. You get paid MILLIONS of dollars to play a sport. Take it seriously, like someone who gets paid millions of dollars. I make less than $50,000 a year..
Owners dont care cause there is no penalty for sucking other than bad press. Whether they finish first and everyone is healthy or last with 2 or 3 career altering/ending injuries they make money.
@@SunShine-xc6dh well yeah but theyre all outrageously wealthy regardless. And most of the owners have investments in so many other businesses, etc, these teams are just a part of their portfolio. As long as their ROI is decent, they’re happy
This is the first yr in over 20yrs i haven't watched the nfl officials has ruined the game flags every play giving teams wins that should lose sick of it not watching anymore until officials are held accountable for bs calls
Blame Peyton Manning’s crying in the early 2000’s for much of defensive rule changes. It really has become hard to watch with all these flags that shouldn’t be. Football is a contact sport, so don’t cry when contact happens.
@@patrickmoylan5983 Don't worry though, the Brady haters are all here making sure you think it was all that darn Tom Brady's fault. The rule changes were all to help them win, er, I mean cheat! (dripping sarcasm if you missed that)
What an awful take. There’s a difference between arguing that existing rules weren’t properly enforced versus the creation of modern day safety rules that defy logic and the concept of a contact sport that have completely changed the game. You are conflating the issues.
Couldn't agree more with you and Tom. I also think teams are going into the season not fully prepared because of the new schedule and fewer preseason games. And, with all the new technology, it disturbs that there are so many season ending injuries across the league. If the NFL really cared about player well being and safety they would eliminate artificial surfaces and go to natural grass. Also soccer games are on grass and they do not have anywhere near the ACL injuries.
Agreed but also soccer players aren't 6'4" 250 running a 4.4 40 and asked to bend and move the way NFL players are on every single snap. Not a jab at you but huge difference in futbol and football. The biggest soccer players are what, MAX 170-180? If that? I'm 6'1" 180lbs, I can tell when I gain some weight how much it impacts my joints. I run every other day, been military and sports my whole life. Big difference on your joints when you're bigger and asked to do intentional physical push pull contact. Soccer it's mostly running around in the open and nowhere near the level of contact of American football. Again, not a knock on soccer but just not an accurate comparison.
So do you have any ideas how to keep the injuries down. I don't mean injuries caused by contact but ham string and ACL. More conditioning during the off season? So many young players out this year. It seems to get worse each season.
@@elaineres1 it depends who you ask. I've heard some trainers and physical therapists say it's just too much size on the joints. Someone 5'10" isn't naturally supposed to weigh 220 and run and cut like an NFL player does. I'm 38 and the physique of these guys over the years has changed radically but the short answer is muscle isn't very flexible and lack of flexibility can result in muscles not being stretched out and put more strain on tendons and ligaments to pickup the slack and eventually boom injury.
CTE is very real though. One of my high school buddies who never played past community college sits there and acts like he’s trying to bite his own ears randomly. It can be worrying but other than that, he’s a normal family man working a 9-5.
@@173jaSon371 Why wasn’t he flagged then? It was a turnover so you know they reviewed it. They could have thrown it at any time if they felt it should have been thrown. Dobbs was a running back and therefore not protected as a QB on that play. K Jack has been playing like this since he entered the league in 2010 and only now does the NFL have a problem with it. They want revenge for bounty gate since it tarnished their image and they are taking it out on K Jack and Sean Payton when the hit wasn’t malicious.
Excellent video. Tom Brady is correct. The NFL is flat-out atrocious. Too many games are unwatchable. Teams' offenses are horrible. Where are all the good quarterbacks now? Boy, do I miss watching the Magnificent One, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Big Ben, Drew Brees, and others! The NFL golden age is over!
Overall I think he's right. I was watching Zack Wilson against the Bills. Even Josh Allen as good as he is, is so sporadic. Russell Wilson vs. Josh Dobbs. And Dobbs is a great story, but just not very exciting play overall. Seems the defenses are better with all the focus on protecting players.
I’ll never get the Dobbs push it was a money grab to keep the Vikings relevant. Worst sale on defense I’ve ever seen. Rigged as all getout. Low quality way to sabotage Heinicke.
Talking about bad divisions what about Peyton Manning in the AFC South or Aaron Rodgers in the NFC North. The bills Jets and dolphins all made the playoffs when Brady was with the Patriots. When was the last time that the Lions made the playoffs? How many times was the Titans jaguars and Texans in the playoffs when Manning was with the Colts. Don't say it's just AFC East that was mediocre.
The nfl insists on creating rules that not only make little to no sense, they have made the games nearly unrecognizable from just 10 yrs ago. Plus its boring.
Tom is right, but that's not why I stopped watching. NFL started getting too vocal and in-your-face about social issues. I watched the NFL to escape from the day-to-day, not listen to a black national anthem and get politics shoved in my face. I watched the NFL for over 20 years, and still catch NFL content here and there like the Rich Eisen show, but stopped watching games entirely.
The NFL was a beautiful game when I started watching in the late 70s and 80s. There was good balance between offense and defense. Free agency and the salary cap, I hate to say, has robbed the league of true dynasties where the team lineups stay together for years. Now, all you need is a great QB and a few all-star players and the rest is interchangable. Younger, less talented players make rosters now in place of solid veterans just because of the salary cap. Less practice time in training camp and the regular season has hurt player development. Too many rules against defense has robbed us of truly "great" defenses. I'm fine with outlawing head shots but there's too many calls against simple hard hits. I won't say the league is "soft" but it's much softer than before and it's just not a beautiful game anymore. Oh, and the new uniforms are hideous (Rams, Titans, Falcons, Dolphins, etc)!
Finally! Thank you Rich and (something I'm almost loathe to say) thank you Tom Brady. It's a combination of factors: Too many games, too little practice, poor officiating, rules that devalue defense, and (dare I say it) too many teams. I've all but stopped watching the pro game because of it
You mean playing September, October, November, December, potentially into January and February. Sooooo 6 months of the year with games not to mention training camp in August.
I remember years ago when McCarthy would run his QB School with Packers QBs long before anyone else reported. And whenever Matt Flynn stepped in for Rodgers, he looked like an all-pro.
He’s surprised me forsure. Going into the season I was thinking man dolphins got a really good team but there’s just no way tua stays healthy. Before it seemed like anytime he got hit he would smack his head on the ground super hard, it was odd it was like he didn’t know how to fall and anytime he did he took maximum damage. Hell that 1 doctor that first discovered and gave a name to CTE had an interview where he recommended retirement for tua so I thought a couple hits and he’ll be out by like week 3 or 4 but he proved me wrong so far
So there is a team that 1-9 and another that's 9-1. We didn't just see an ancient scoring record that could have been broken if the coach Said kick a field goal instead of take a knee
Under the salary cap and the idea of parity, every team should have a record between 10-7 to 7-10. Expansion has diluted the product. I think the lack of true practices is hurting the league. The excessive dropped passes is just inexcusable.
@@SunShine-xc6dh True, but overall decline can have a lag effect. Why the poor product? Kids leaving college early, coaches are having to go soft on the players, NFLPA has too ouch power?
@bradg.5253 the rules have been drastically altered with more changes each year. Games are decided by refs as much as players. Can throw no problem a flag will bail you out
What drives me nuts is that teams will hold onto and recycle the same mediocre at best QBs. Any other position where they don't perform they get replaced by a kid out of college, cut, and they're out of the league. But NFL teams will stick with a QB for years and years knowing they're mediocre at best. There are plenty of QB's to pick from in the NCAA each year, go out and get someone who can perform. Case and point: Zach Wilson. Three years now, zero development, no signs of improvement.
Um... not so much. he played for 22 years and the first 12 years were a bloodbath He lost an entire season from what would likely never happen today Now, I totally get it, Beadyw was a complainer and was always in the Refs ear... But he took a beating for a long time before the NFL got softer
@@Andrew_M_WardEvery quarterback has always been looking for a flag not just Brady Peyton Manning was the biggest one of all. I've seen many receivers complain about flags not being thrown for PI or defenders complaining about OPI so it's not just quarterbacks complaining.
The other side of what Brady said is college players aren't nearly developed to the level that Brady's generation was. So to Rich's point, the backup QBs aren't developed enough out of college, and they aren't developed in the pros either. Brady had a year with the Patriots and learning the playbook before Bledsoe's injury provided his opportunity. He didn't have a great arm, but he knew the playbook and had the game sense to protect his receivers.
No, it was going that way because of the league and the further corporatization of the product. Brady complained on the field, sure, but the reason it is the way it is today is way above his paygrade.
@@scratchpennylet’s be honest it wasn’t just Brady that complained on the field so let’s not make it seem like Brady was the only one doing it. U don’t and never see Brady tapping his helmet looking for a flag when a defender hits it
Brady isn't wrong, but he's also part of the problem. He is one the of the biggest reasons the game is as hard for defenses as it is today. I don't ever remember him sticking up for opposing defenses when he got free first downs because a lineman breathed on his shoulder pad.
Wrong! The Colts GM who was in charge of competition committee had rules on defense changed because he was tired of loosing to Patriots and Tom Brady. No one on Patriots asked for rules to be changed. Nice try spreading a lie !
The Tuck rule was called 12 to 15 times a season until it got eliminated. The Raiders had a chance to win that football game but they didn't do it. Don't blame the Raiders failures just on one call
@@Dennis-nm1jm Ok, who brings out a snow plow so any team can kick a winning field goal. Yes, that was a fumble and yes clearing the snow made a difference in the Patriots winning as well. Yes , Yes Yes that was a fumble. One play does make a difference in a game. Brady would not have lasted in the Montana era
Rich thank you for the in-depth take instead of the low-hanging fruit of "Bah Tom this, Tom that." Thank you for explaining it so well and in-depth. Had no idea this could be a factor of why new players look so unprepared now.
I agree. I think the more they are doing to "protect" the players like less practice, less preseason, less hitting, the more we're seeing players get hurt cause they're not ready.
Amen and just like Eli Manning, when he first started I said it will take him 2-3 years before he gets the swing of it and we all know the story after that.....
Fantasy, Gambling, Analytics, Rule changes, Cuddling players, The Offense Show, 400+ yards games, 4th down plays, 2 point conversions, not kicking field goals, no extra points, limiting the defense capabilities with penalties, protecting some players over others, social media, DEI, ESG, etc, etc! Pick one or a bunch of them! They're Destroying The Game! They're turning it into a Show!
If anyone doubts Brady on this - the man dominated the NFL in his 40s? Was it really because he was so so much better than everyone or because the opposition was not as strong to compete with a man that played against all-timers
I bet Tom Brady is referring to the NFL starting Desmond Midder over the qb who outplayed him twice when they matched up. Arthur Smith and Arthur Blank need out of the NFL.
@@litedawg Combine that with the obvious tankjob the Falcons team did to get Ridder back on the field and I think the Tom Brady criticism is warranted. You can't tell me ATL didn't sell the Vikings game to Dobbs, signed, painted, and sealed. He was undeserving of the push and so were the Vikings, but because they're a blue chip franchise the NFL wanted to keep selling tickets and jerseys they opted to keep pushing Vikings so they could lose in or narrowly miss the playoffs. Miss me with your shite script writing NFL. Just let the teams play or have the FBI shut down the whole gambling circus. There's no integrity in the sport it's no different from the WWE with football. ATL has both Arthur's as McMahon now that Snyder is gone. It's not good tv it's how you lose a franchise and have to sell it.
It’s the ownership greed during the bargaining with the players, where they give the players all this time off to make sure they still maintain financial security. I made a comment at the outset of the video and appreciate that you mentioned it as well .
Brady is FOS . You'd tbink if the NFL he left last Season was so Mediocre this season that Brady would have jumped at the chance to take advantage of it , and be the Raiders QB . He could have gotten Number 8 Ring .
The regular/playoff season ends by the middle of January. It's ridiculous these players are being paid millions upon millions and they get to sit on their butts partying for 4 months. After one month of relaxing they should be back at the facility studying and getting reps in. Especially the rookies and backup QBs!
The NFL is a mess right now, the quality of the product is bad!! Players are overpaid and do not tackle in practice during the week!! Today's game is horrible!!
