Rolex watches are some of the most sought-after timepieces in the world. Last year, a vintage Rolex Daytona worn by Paul Newman was sold at auction for $17.8 million. Cara Barrett, editor at Hodinkee, fills us in on why Rolex's are so pricey.

Following is a transcript of the video:
Cara Barrett: There is a rumor that in order for a Rolex to actually leave the factory or be a Rolex design it has be to recognizable from 20 feet away.
Hi, I'm Cara Barrett, editor at Hodinkee, the leading online watch publication. Rolex is one of the few brands, if not the only brand that has a very specific aesthetic. They are sporty, they are active, they are tool watches that's kind of their main DNA.
In the 50's they came out with the Submariner, the Explorer, the Milgauss, the GMT and they were all watches that were designed and made to be used as tools. And so that's their bread and butter and it still is today. It kind of evolved into a luxury brand later in life which now is what they're known for. So that's kind of the interesting thing about them is they initially were tool watches which have now become luxury. Rolex is kind of one of those brands that sits on the lower end of the spectrum as far as luxury watches are concerned.
The Submariner's $8,000. The entry-level watch at Rolex is $5,000 with the Oyster Perpetual. Their three qualities are self-winding, waterproof and precision. And they really focus on quality. It takes one year to make a Rolex. They go through extensive testing. The accuracy, the chronometer, the timing, it's all about telling the right time, keeping the right time. They also have extensive service work after, so if you ever have a problem with your Rolex, you can take it to them and they'll fix it.
The clasp is opened and closed a thousand times before it leaves so you know that when you get it, it's not gonna break. The whole point of a Rolex is you buy one now, it will last you for 20 years if you take care of it. It will last you for 100 if you really take care of it. That's ultimately why they're so expensive because you're buying something that will last you a lifetime presumably. And something that you can pass down to other generations as well.
In the collectors' world, there's the vintage Rolex market. And there's a whole underground of different nuances and you know there's a GMT with a matte dial, a GMT with a gilt dial and there are all these tiny little details that change and they make a watch more or less valuable.
There's the Paul Newman Daytona which sold for $17.8 million last fall and that's the most expensive Rolex that's ever sold at auction. The Paul Newman Daytona is a really good example where they came out with a Daytona back in the 70s and they put these exotic dials on them and they couldn't sell them. And now they're the most collectible watches on the vintage market.
No one knows how many Rolexes are produced per year, no one knows how many Rolexes are produced per model. But there are specific ones, like the Rainbow Daytona that came out this year, rumored to have X amount made, but very small quantities. You don't ever know exactly what the number is, but you do know that there aren't that many. And they're hard to get.
One of the best things about Rolex is anyone can wear any of them. They're very unisex and I think that that's refreshing 'cause a lot of times brands put a lot of diamonds on watches and kind of brand it as a woman's watch. Whereas Rolex does the same thing, but it's kind of unisex. I wear a lot of men's Rolex. But the ladies Datejust is actually, in two-tone, is actually the most sold Rolex model of all time. Which is a really fun fact.

@@THEREALZENFORCE Because these are veblen goods. They have no value other than the perceived notion of value. What makes them expensive is their brand and "exclusivity." I mean, you will see women justifying a $2,000 purse made of Canvas. What gives that canvas bag value is that it has Louis Vuitton stamped on it. Note that Louis Vuitton's revenue didn't decline much with the market crash of 2008. I guarantee it probably cost $500 or less to make a rolex priced at $5,000. Furthermore, the strangeness of these goods is that a good portion of the middle class buy them.

MY father grew up with Rolex . The Daytona lacked a 24 hour dial , that most car drivers preferred , the one that had a dial purposely for the 24 hours of Le Man's was the Dan Henry , a super elegant sports watch , maybe more elegant than the Daytona. The Pepsi Gmt II was the one I kept , for comfort , not bulky but inconveniently sharp at the end of luggs, but later after 2 years it needed a rotor and the luminosity was gone , done with ! it never glowed ever in the dark , and a high percentage of them get internal corrosion and are ridiculously without sense, more expensive . the other I loved was a Seiko skx 007 which had a bright glow and never needed repair or overhaul after 17 years ! So to my opinion Rolex is super overpriced for its funtionality.

@@Batman-jc8to that's how the world works. Rich people don't know what to do with their money. So they pay for anything that they cannot make themselves, and because they are rich, people want to get the highest price for the dumbest sh!t. That's why auctions exist. It's to get the highest price from the richest person for the most basic product. Some people have found memories of those items, so they end up paying any price for those memories rather than the product itself. Note that the Rolex that was sold for 17 million was sold at an auction rather than a shop. Therefore, in a rich area, people will generally pay more for the basic stuff. But in those poor countries, the demand for their products is from the middle class and the poor. They also produce in bulk, so they are catering for a different market. They say that it takes one year to make a Rolex for example. In those poorer countries, a year on a tiny product means a year without food. But if they produce products every month, then there's food every month. Hope you get a picture of what I'm trying to say. The mindset of poor people is not the same as the mindset of rich people.

One reason Rolex watches are so expensive is they make so few each year that you can never find them, even at their certified dealers, for the MSRP price. If you want one you have to be on a waiting list for at least a year, and usually more. Which means if you really want even their cheaper models you either have to wait or pay a 2 or 3 time MSRP premium.
@smashexentertainment676
@smashexentertainment676 2 года назад
From all Swiss luxury watch manufacturers Rolex is producing a million watches per year, which is twice more than Omega and 20 times more than any other popular brand. It's that people overhype popular models like colorful variations of Sub/GMT and Daytona and that's where waiting list goes crazy and greedy gray market takes a chunk. The rest of the models are fairly available. To satisfy the demand they would need to either invest in expansion, or in transforming existing production lines to produce specific models. Which is time, money and energy consuming. That way Rolex gets its cut and keeps existing clients happy, as long as bubble holds its value.

As a watch person, I can tell you that for $8-10,000 with a Rolex you are getting no precious metal or jewel content whatsoever, just a steel watch with a self-winding movement similar to what other brands sell for roughly half. The extra cost of a Rolex is entirely attributable to the fact that the movement is made by Rolex and not bought from an outside supplier. This means that Rolex has some additional pricing power and essentially a monopoly on the movements. However, for a Swiss-made mechanical watch with an in-house movement, it is on the bottom of the class, not the top. All other Swiss watches with in-house movements cost more, not less. Rolex is entry-level and accessible by most ordinary people with a credit card, and that’s also a reason why they can price aggressively. Too bad this vid could not shed any light on these demonstrable realities.

The reason Rolex keeps the number of any model produced per year is a core part of their marketing and sales: intentionally reduce supply or give the market the impression that there is an under supply to increase price/demand. De Beers utilized the exact same sales model to fictionally give the market the impression that there was an under-supply of diamonds when fact is they just stockpiled them to raise prices and demand.

In 1994 while on vacation in Hawaii I purchased a Tag Heuer. I was looking at a $5,000 Rolex.. beautiful but for that price..no chance. The jeweler showed me Tag divers watch .. very similar in appearance. He asked... do you want a superlative timepiece and a status symbol that will last 75 to 100 years.. or can you be happy with a merely excellent timepiece that will give you 50 to 75 years... $900.. vs. $5000? I went with the Tag... except for two occasions to have it cleaned and checked, I've worn it every day. I've never regretted my choice and I have always respected the advice and the integrity of the sales person.

By no means. My Citizen was only a few hundred, keeps good time, looks better than all the Rolexes I've seen, and is powered by light, which I love.

No matter how good quality is, you are not paying for quality, you are paying for that brand and some prestige that will not bring you happiness in life. Helping others that are in need will bring you real happiness.

Unboxing Sve you’re paying for legacy, you’re paying for construction, you’re paying for the ability to hand it down for your kids, you’re paying for the way they lose virtually no value over time (and often go up in value the more time passes), and you’re paying for the artistry. I think it’s a horrible idea to buy a watch for ‘prestige’, and I don’t think that’s the reason most people buy them. They really are well made and long lasting pieces.

Seiko watches are not as comfortable nor do they have screw down crowns to make them into a dive watch. Rolex are a unique watch in that they can do almost anything and be worn on almost any occasion. Grand Seiko watches are really well made, look fantastic and are reliable but they are not a do anything watch. There simply are no other options on the market place to Rolex.

so basically the reason is useless fluff, got it, love this series because it unmasks the stupid overkill production decisions companies make just so they can try to justify ridiculous prices, there's NO reason why in this day and age a watch should cost as much

Forever watch? LOL. They require EXPENSIVE servicing and repairs are OBSCENELY marked up both in labor and cost of parts. And before you think you can buy it second hand and just take it to your local watchmaker think again. Rolex have begun a move towards using parts that are too expensive for watchmakers to purchase independently. It's a clever push towards roping you into a long term commitment into Rolex servicing which will cost you a bundle. I expect you'll see a lot of watches sold before the owner has to do a major servicing. And the resale on their best selling models is nothing spectacular, you're losing money the minute you walk out the door. Rolex make a quality product that has a reputation established through very aggressive marketing, 50 years ago they were quiet affordable. But were never in the league of Breguet, Patek, Vacheron, Audemars Piguet and most recently A. Lange & Sohne. My big gripe with Rolex is that these watches at the end of the day are mass produced timepieces.. over a million a year are made, there really is nothing exclusive about them. You're paying for a mass produced watch as if it were a limited quantity. And there's little if any innovation like we see at Zenith where they really are trying to move the ball forward in horology and not just offering "ground breaking" bezel colors. Honestly I'd rather have a Grand Seiko Spring Drive than having another ubiquitous Submariner on the street.

jim g. Rolex service depends on what they have to do. Usually changing parts, oiling, polishing and precision tests it costs you around 500-600€ which is pretty fair

Andromeda Spectrum the only reason why they‘re doing this is because of the stability of the used market. Rolex are some of the most stable watches you can own. It depends on the model, but because of the waiting list, the used prices are even higher than the listing prices. I bought an Explorer 2 and had to wait 3 months (which is completely okay) and I could sell it any time with 1.000€ profit 🙌🏽 You can‘t do that with your Seiko ;-)
