Italy 2019 was pretty wild, wasn't it? In this video I'm going to look at why drivers are so tempted to go wide at Parabolica and how we try to stop them.

You always have to keep MotoGP in mind, a lot of these circuits also want to host their races, so FIM has a say when it comes to kerbs and run-off areas. They tend to (understandably) push for less risky designs than the FIA.

6:00 The problem with the sensor/low power idea is that it, in my view, would be likely to incentivise dangerous and unsportsmanlike driving, as well as unnecessary risk taking. Great advantages could be gained, for example, by forcing someone off in a duel. Equally, it would discourage drivers from bailing out or avoiding potentially dangerous situation, leading them to take greater risks, as they might consider the loss of power penalty from dodging off the track to outweigh the risk of collision from remaining within the lines during a dangerous situation.

A simple solution would be to a 'joker' route like they have in rally cross. Set so that the penalty route is opposite the pit lane. This way they can run wide if they want but they have to then take this alternative route. If they finish their current lap before they have the chance to take the joker route or the joker route is behind them before the offense occurs, time penalty for that route will be added onto their previous lap. If they set a fastest lap record before they are able to take this route then the same applies as above.

The sensor inn The track idea is already being used in supercars Australia with great success. It's used in one chicane where cutting the second apex gives an advantage. During qualifying and practice if you pass the line your time is removed During the race you get 3 warnings the 4th time is a drive through penalty. It seems harsh but it makes for great racing in the closing laps as one car may be on his 3rd warning and the other car in the battle hasn't had any so can push passed the limits once or twice to make it work.

Disco lights on the rear wings would be glorious. Anyway the most sensible approach is a grass strip as you said, or any other kind of more slippery surface (but not too slippery to completely lose control and go nose first against the outside barrier). Or they could rework the curve slightly in order to fit the fasted trajectory within the track limits, although I doubt they would do such a thing

On-topic: electronic detection and iRacing style slowdown penalties that you must serve before the next few corners or you get black flagged would work just fine. Penalties automatically handed out in a safe fashion. You don’t need any fancy sensors installed in the track. All you need is a wire underneath the white lines.

Even Australian Supercars has a track limits sensor for kerb hops at some sections of track that can be abused for gains. It works really well in my opinion, do it it quali and your lap gets deleted, do it in a race and you get a few strikes until it’s a drive through. It’s simple, not a judgement call by the stewards and leads to tense moments where one driver whose been clean all day is chasing down a driver on their last strike who’s having to be careful.

I think there should be a half car width of tarmac next to the outside line. Two wheels on the inside the line is on the course. Right at the edge of the half car width you got the grass and put back the gravel, and an escape/ penalty/zig/zag road at the fence for Hulk and Ham. This way there is a bit more track, and a possible passing groove on the inside. Plus a higher speed in that turn. Means on party mode one might outsprint the outside car on the "slower" groove.

What if a driver is run wide? Like Leclerc did to Hamilton in Monza, or Verstappen to Leclerc in Austria? The idea sounds great, but it would be disastrous without steward intervention.

Automatic (as stewards, too) may make mistake or may be tweaked in some way)
@cabelovlie784

@@perp1exed Could be as simple as it's only added to sections that are abused for better lap times (Parabolica, Pouhon or Stavelot at Spa, etc.). Or make the system automatic, and the drivers get a slow down penalty they have to serve within a lap or two. This would give the teams time to contest the penalty with the FIA. If they driver doesn't slow down, they face a harsher penalty (think of iRacing).

I disagree with all of you, and am 100% against any automated system. Not that I love the constant FIA meddling during races... but I can guarantee that an automated system will be worse. There are just too many variables to account for. A better solution is to use removable track materials like grippy astroturf, to simulate grass on corners. That's an analog solution that does not interfere with racing in any way. It's much better than stewards or sensors policing track limits. I guess you guys are arguing the issue from the perspective that stewards are generally not as "consistent" as they should be. I'm arguing from the perspective, that policing is bad... period. The less drivers are policed, the better racing we will see imo. (P.S: I do think the FIA is vital to motorsport and the safety of drivers, stewards and fans. My issue is with the over-policing of the racing itself. I support all safety measures, as long as the FIA shut their mouths and let people race, once the race has begun. )

The sensor idea is good if it's connected to the lap timing meter. E.g. Add a 1 second penalty for each infraction rather than power reduction.
@DM0407
@DM0407 4 года назад
I like the track limits sensors. Put them 2.2 meters beyond the white line, if they are tripped than all four wheels were off. Give them a few seconds of warning on the steering wheel that they will lose power down the straight, or alternatively give a delta they need to hit. If another car is closely following they need to move off line, similar to qualifying. If they try to block while on low power they are given a second penalty.

The electronic detection is probably the best idea. The penalty could be as simply as missing out on your next DRS opportunity. Obviously the leader would need some other penalty; maybe no electrical motor boost available on that next straight/DRS zone.

Like they do in France ... make a strip that has a tremendous high friction coefficient .. so that when a car drives over it , it will not ‘loose’ grip.. but instead gain a lot of resistance so the car slows down... and in case needed , reach the tarmac strip and brake normally to avoid a collision with the wall...

Chain Bear, I think the Silverstone solution has merit. However, I would change the grass or gravel strip to a STRIP OF POLISHED TARMAC. If a car runs outside track limits, the lack of traction produced by the slick tarmac would impede their progress, and ruin their lap time. The area outside the slick strip could remain tarmac, as it is at Silverstone to allow cars to regain control before continuing... Additionally, the slick strip could be painted a color to designate it as such. An added bonus with slick strips would be the elimination of curbing altogether, which could save the bodywork on the cars.

High abrasion surface could also work, people would be less likely to accelerate hard on it but it would be safer than gravel

I think the grass or gravel strip sounds like a good idea, though I'm wondering if having different pavement types in different parts of the corner could also work in the long run, with degrading amounts of traction towards the outside.

They could get the sensors for when you go out of the track with instead of a power dump make the car maximum speed be 300km/h instead of 340km/h, you still accelerate fast enough to not get hit by other car but you won't be able to match the speed of an incoming car...and it can last till the next lap with a drop on the maximum speed acumulating by a fixed amount (not less than 280km/h for example). So, if you go out of the track you get a lower maximum speed without loosing power to avoid colisions and it will last till the end of the lap.

Powercut makes sense. It doesn't have to be brutal. Just a small reduction in rev limit for a lap. Enough to slow you by 10 MPH at the end of the straight.

What I’m always curious about is that ex-drivers like David Coulthard and Mark Webber are always demanding more gravel/grass instead of run off. Do they a) not know that tarmac is safer, or b) not care? Great video as ever!
