Why Russell T Davies Is Transforming Into Doctor Who VILLAIN

It's concerning how many things RTD is now seeing that... just aren't there. Like the Davros thing, where most just assumed it was before the life support system (a little lore breaking but hey it's just a CIN short,) until his comments, which seemed completely _bizarre_ to most people, this pew issue at 26:38 is... unhinged. Something people were just assuming was some dodgy new design becomes another "Russell... no one was thinking that" moment. Paranoid and completely out of touch _and_ with unchecked power? Yeah, not a good combination. When I heard his words, I just thought of all the kids that brought their sonics to the theatre showing of the 50th & how much _absolute joy_ they got from zzzzttting them, and RTD knocking them out of their hands "Noooo they're like gنns!!" And everyone just looking at him like ????? Completely divorced from any semblance of reality.

How low-key racist is RTD to assume a sonic looks like a guun if a black man holds it? Never has anyone thought it looks like a gun when all the previous white Doctors held one.

So fed up with RTD & Gatwa force feeding us their views and opinions on everything. Never been less interested in NuWho than I am right now.

Very thought provoking piece. I can always depend on you for a balanced and informed opinion. The facts speak for themselves. In my eyes RTD has transformed from Saviour to Saboteur. As a fan since 1963 this is a sad day for me.RTD certainly is a Monarch However i am also NOT going away. I am (somewhat optimistically) hoping there is something for me in this new series.

I am now far better prepared for what is to come, a series that is Doctor Who in name only. During his first run, I wondered if Russell really likes the show, or likes it in the same way that most of the rest of us do. Now it's as if he's never even seen the show, if he worries that the sonic screwdriver looks like a gun. Bananas look more like guns, so is the Doctor never to eat a banana in all future series? It appears even clearer that those in control of the show understand neither the show itself nor its fans, with an attitude bordering on contempt for both. I would be interested in hearing from your teaching experience, Brendan, what sort of Doctor Who you believe would appeal to children. Might that be a topic for a future show?

The interview with RTD shows us that he doesn’t give a damn about the Doctor being an outsider an alien and just wants to humanise the Doctor and to hell with the characterisation that worked for decades. RTD is causing more problems for minorities by signposting their differences. His clunky inclusivity is laughable. What’s wrong with Doctor Who just being about good stories and leaving the politics to allegory? Fans say that Doctor Who has always been political but Classic Who was never concerned with sex appeal especially from the main character. If there was romance it was from the companion not the Doctor. The first 7 Doctors would never be interested in romance or relationships. I like the Doctor being aloof and closed so this new era isn’t for me as it sounds terrible. Excellent video. I agree with everything you’ve said. I can only see Doctor Who as a parody these days.

Greetings from Australia. I hate to say it, but Doctor Who is a lost property. As far as I am concerned it ended in "Twice upon a time" I love your dedication to Who, but maybe now is the time for us all to just go back and enjoy the last 55 years of great Who we got, and not give the attention to the dumpster fire that is current Who. Giving it attention, even negative, is giving it what they want. We can be better than them.

I guarantee "The Sonic Screwdriver looks too much like a weapon" was a note from Disney and RTD acted on it.

I'll be honest.. I stopped watching Doctor Who in 1984.

A very professional analysis of the sorry state we find ourselves in with the current iteration of Doctor Who and the words of RTD and Ncuti are used to back this up. Great stuff! 👍

This might be the most thoughtful and interesting Doctor Who Channel out there at the moment... I don't feel as hostile to this new relaunch as some do, but neither am I seeing anything to look forward to exactly either. It most certainly the slowly building air of negative-Promotionals and personal activism of the people making it that is tainting expectation, and probobly the series content too it seems. One aspect to what you were reading out and observing is that the outlooks and words that both Davies and Gatwa are using in these promotional interviews are without a doubt the everyday language and beliefs being used by that clique behind the scenes - in times past it might have been confined to Davies and a fellow Producer, and kept in check by a more sensible and focused leading cast who were focused on the Job, and with no interest in those politics. But we have now an unprecedented age where all of this extreme thinking and woolly activism is not just out in front of the Production crew, but is actually shared by the lead actor!?! It is clear they are all close friends behind the scenes, all beholden to Davies, and all feel free to share his odd outlook and (frankly) his lack of discipline. When the series returned in 2005 I was collecting newspaper cuttings on the series, I had done for years, but with a parent who worked at the library, and who asked work colleagues to keep and 'Doctor Who' cuttings, I quickly found myself being inundated with envelopes sent from the county libraries, all sent through the internal mail, and it seemed everyone had joined in on finding and saving all sorts of newspaper and magazine related material for me - Someone kindly sent me John Barrowman's very first 2004 interview in 'Attitude/Gay Times' for example, someone saved me cuttings from 'The Stage', and someone saved cuttings from newspapers as far away as the Manchester Evening News... and, err The Daily Sport(!). Someone even kept aside bits and pieces from toy catalogues and the like. This all went on until the end of Matt Smith's time, and it had become _impossible_ to save them to scrapbooks as was my previous preference, and so they went into Box-Files for the easiest. And there they remain today. The point I want to make here, it that from all of this media in those white-hot years between 2005-2014ish, there was virtually *no* reporting or comment on the series' or casts sexual/race aspects. The only two I was aware of were a newspaper report or two on Barrowman's personal life and an antic or two in the Daily Star, but back in those nine years all of the language and the publicising we are seeing now attached to the series simply... weren't there. All there was was the focus on the series, the new monsters, the cast for the new series, and just newspaper gossip. Family friendly gossip... ------------------------------- I do wonder - did this focus by Davies and Co on promoting the series, rather than their politics and activism, play a good part in helping that series reach the mass audience in those years, and making them all feel involved and a part of it? Because by definition the publicity and promotional content seen today is the _opposite_ of that approach. It isn't inclusive, it is divisive. It is promotion and wording that isn't going to engage EVERYBODY, just a relatively small niche who actually sympathise with that sort of niche thinking. It is the thinking and outlook of a Producer and crew who live in a very different world to what the mass audience and public live in, BELIEVE in. And while it seems that ratings are no longer a measure of success, might it be that what will be the measure, will be whether the public and mainstream media even find Doctor Who _worth_ talking about anymore...? Because in the end - who is it being aimed at anymore?

The sonic screwdriver doesn't look like a traditional earth gun (have to say that, 'cos out in sci-fi, guns look like all sorts). But from Tennant onwards, The Doctors started to wield it and pose like it is a gun.. 007 James Bond style! I cringe at comic cons, when i see a whole generation of fans who can't `be The Doctor' without (a) holding a sonic screwdriver and (b) posing like James Bond! (This is why I lug my trusted K9 about.. ). Brendon, like you and many others here, am `getting a bad feeling' about our ol pal Rus.. ever since that Davros fiasco happened at Children in Need (well the statements afterwards - That was the real public launch point where TRD's agendas were given legs to stand on!! I hope this RTD2 revoltations burn itself out like all dangerous forest fires.. but I fear only after it decimates the show to within inches of its very Vortex!! - Mani
