Why Russia Looks So Depressing?

Life in Russia is depressing, how can we live here, everything inside Russia is so grey and not welcoming. Every day I see these comments under some of my videos, many other videos. Today I tried to think about why does Russia give such vibes and does it depend on how it's usually portrayed in the media.

In autumn the nature starts its hibernation, it is a farewell up to next spring. Some people say, the nature dies - dies to be reborn after winter. Excellent in autumn or winter: Drink some hot tea (your typical tea) with spices (cinnamon, coriander, piment, vanilla, nutmeg - only a bit each, put the spices in a sachet, will be removed before drinking), sugar or honey and a bit butter or milk. Alternative: Same spices in warm milk, sugar or honey. Or you drink hot wine, red or white or cider, heaten SLOWLY with same spices (no vanilla), a bit orange peel, sugar or honey. No milk / butter here. Spices and peel please remove before drinking. 🇩🇪

As a person from Sweden, I can totally relate to this. November is by far the darkest, rainiest, gloomiest month of the year. We have 5 months of winter from november to march, two months of spring from apr to may, three months of summer from june to aug, and two months of autumn from sep to oct.

Your streets and apartment blocks aren't really more depressing that those to be found anywhere else, even with the grey weather. All they need to make them look more cheerful are people walking and chatting outside, children playing and other signs of social life. Sunshine and a lick of fresh paint would help, but they are not the most important elements. I've seen cheerful happy scenes in very poor slum villages and depressing sterile 'emptiness' in well-tended, climate-blessed rich areas. It's the people make the place. The children you show playing outside make all the difference.

Trees with no leaves are even interesting for me. Where I live (southern Brazil) if a tree has no leaves, it's dead. There's none of that seasonal leaves falling off and then popping up again. I'm in Buenos Aires now and I feel the same thing but not only from summer to fall, but also from day to day. Yesterday was a wonderful bright and sunny day and today it's a depressing grey day (a storm is coming). Hi Zangieff, my friend. I am so happy to see you 👋. If you go to German cities they look depressive and grey as well, except for little villages with very old half-timbered houses (you find them usually in center and southern region - for tourists "Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse" is maybe interesting) or houses made of clinker (you find them in northern region of FRG, the roofes are sometimes covered with reed). When its dark and the lights go on they look really lovely. Especially new houses (small and huge) here have no soul, look trist, cold and sad. Some people love it, others not. I never lived in a (huge) city amid huge houses, I could not imagine to do it and won't do it. When the sun is shining, everything looks more friendly and everywhere its more bright. And without humor, joy and fun everything is grey and depressive. So we should never lose it, whatever happens. The apartments and cityscape in Russia looks very underwhelming just like their economy. Especially compared to first-world countries like The USA. And I don't think that it's wrong to notice or comment on that. It's not Zangieff or other Russian citizens fault that their economy is so bad. It's the Russian oligarchs and corrupt government that holds the country back. Many Americans love to complain about how bad their government, country and culture is, but fail to realise that they have it better than 90% of the world including Russia. Please let's not sit around and pretend that life for the average Russian is as good as life for an average American. Of course there are shortcomings with these apartments, as with Victorian/Edwardian terraced houses in the UK, in one of which we live, but the construction is on a human scale and the community life is much better than in a 24 or 40 (as they have in China 😱). The climate is what it is in Russia and totally different to Japan or Maritime Climate Europe. Winter, that's depressing. Last winter we spent most the winter in Armenia and it was sooooooooooo much better because the freaking sun actually shines. Chicago is horrible, you can go a month without the sun shining. It gets dark at 4 30pm. That being said, the gray days makes everything look like a cold bucket of sadness. When spring comes it feels like you climbed out of a dark tunnel. Even in Texas when it's gray days things look like misery.

Hi Zangieff, nice to see you again! To be honest, winter has always been my favourite time of the year. Maybe because I live in South Africa and any other time of the year is unbearably hot and humid (for me at least). We have short winters and the hot seasons are long and very hot (especially from November to March). February is usually the hottest month of the year. Although we have spring from 1 September to the en of November, the heat doesn't start gradually. It's still winter one day and then boom! it's hot. The rain comes later and later every year, so everything green burns to brown until early November when we get some rain in the central and northern parts of South Africa. Only then do we see some green. So the bottom line is every country has it's pretty and less pretty times. Personally I would prefer long winters over long summers. But that's just me. 🇿🇦

Everyone has different views of the world based on what they are accustomed to. Keeping an open mind is essential to appreciating other ways of life. Personally I prefer smaller towns and a more rural setting, yet every day of the week I drive down to Denver, CO to deliver food in my truck. I could never live in a big city like that... I would be depressed, and I ask myself all the time how could anyone want to live in this Jungle... but apparently they find some sorta comfort/normalcy living there, and they would say the same about me living in a more rural place "how you could you stand living in such a small place".... I love it!

Zangieff the outdoors reminds me of the US Midwest in the late fall and winter., gray skies, bare trees. That's one reason I would never move back there after graduating from university. The one thing inside that looks depressing is the old style inside the older apartments. The wallpaper looks like something I would have found in my grandparents house in the 50s & 60s. The lighting inside the apartments looks harsh and not warm and generally the style looks out of date.

it really does not look that different from most of the East of the USA in the winter time. People are just trained to see the "commie blocks" as depressing and have never been there or know how it feels. Such buildings in the USA are usually quite bad, for crime and poverty. That is why people say it "looks depressing." Don't overestimate the mind of Americans in particular - thinking is not our specialty.

I have seen depressing parts of Russia but not all of it. Few parts of the world don't get depressing during the autumn. The tropics of course don't change. They did a study & found many places that are depressing had a higher suicide rate. Alaska is dark a great deal of the time during winter. Just one example but there are others.

This looks like every northern city in America when November comes around. And most of the south too. It is interesting to see the new buildings versus the old ones though. Usually I like older buildings better than new ones because older typically has more character to it and modern ones are cold and plain. But from this video it looks like it's the opposite. I was cracking up because when you showed the one apartment and said it was occupied by an older lady, I had to chuckle because that is exactly how the elderly decorate here in the U.S too. I just moved into a place with little pink flowers on the walls where an older person lived for a long time. (Yes we painted.) It's always interesting to me how people of every country are so often similar. Yes differences of course, but the similarities outnumber the differences in my view.

I think the difference is in my town in the US we rake our leaves, at the appointed time a truck comes and sucks the leaves off the road. You pointed down to the road and said it was asphalt but it was brown, our streets are also asphalt but there is a street sweeper that brushes anything off the road which leaves the road black. There is some long term schedule to reseal the asphalt road and then at some point there is an enormous machine that picks up the old road and lays gravel and then new asphalt. If there is a pothole in the road I just call a 3 digit number to report it and it gets fixed rather quickly, I also can file a report of car damage caused by the road and they pay for the damages. In October people decorate for Halloween with lights and some go nuts with blow up characters, our thanksgiving is in November and people decorate their doorways and windows in a harvest theme. The minute that’s over we decorate for Christmas . People go nuts with lights giant blow up Santas, candy cane line their sidewalks. There are certain neighborhoods that are famous for their decorations so it is a family tradition to drive around and look at all the effort people put into their house decorating. The other thing that brightens the season is that shopping areas, malls etc. do up their store fronts and their common areas. Even some of the bigger buildings create trees etc with lights across 10+ floors or they add to their tops holiday colors which makes driving downtown festive.
