Why's Rammstein So Popular? 

"Even your parents know Rammstein." Dude, I know Rammstein because of my parents.

"Rammstein is bigger than the genre itself." I think that's the best way of summarizing their success.

Rammstein is like the main reason I’m learning German on Duolingo

AND the small fact that they NEVER compromised on translating any albums OR singles into english, just to reach more ears. By sticking with that mentality, I believe has earned them a MASSIVE amount of respect. Just staying true to who they are.

"So who's booked the arena this month?" "Rammstein." "OK, turn off the heating and unplug the smoke alarms."

Pissing parents off? I raised my kids on Rammstein.

I think an important aspect that is not noted by the lyrics here 3:03 is that they have a polyvalence of meanings - they use German words, which can have multiple meanings depending on the context without giving you the context. In other words, they mean all the meanings at once and perhaps none of the meaning at once - because they are "plastic words" in the Pörksenian sense (Penn State University Press, 2004). If you ignore German orthography, and merely focus on phonemes - Rammstein uses words that sound like other words (homophones) - "Du hast mich" could also be "Du haßt mich," They also do a lot of play on words, use metaphors and idioms. That is their genius. A lot gets lost in translation, which makes their lyrics appear simplistic when they really are extremely complex.

From the German point of view it's also really interesting that the thing I like the most about Rammstein is completely lost on international audiences: their lyrics. Aside from Till sounding really fantastic, he's also a really talented poet (he actually even published poetry over the years). The themes and stories are really interesting, mature, well told and offer some really great insight into the human condition. They are often told from the perspective of some interesting, complex and sometimes deranged character, which is a fact that often gets overlooked by critics: the lyrics are not from the point of view of Rammstein or Till, but from a character. And as a fan of literature I can't help but notice the influence of classic German literature and poetry. A lot of the lyrics are really similar in style and rhyme scheme to German poets like Goethe or Schiller (they even referenced some classic works in their songs, e.g. Roter Sand references Effi Briest, Haifisch references Brecht, Dalai Lama references Goethe). If you took certain Rammstein lyrics, mixed them up with poems by aforementioned poets and asked someone to determine which were written by whom, I guarantee you that he would be completely unable to do so consistently. I really like that Rammstein is so popular outside of Germany and they have a lot of qualities to justify that, but it's a bit of a shame that Till's poetry gets lost in translation.

Rammstein is art not just music. What they put into their videos and their stage show. Pure brilliance.

Rammstein is the reason why I started to learn German.

I was pregnant with my son when I went to see Rammstein in Glasgow. He used to sit in his car seat headbanging and singing Sonne. Bless he's nearly 18 now and loves them to the surprise of his school friends.

I've been hammering my speakers with the music of Rammstein since day one .And here i am at 66 still cranking their music up . Have listened to a lot of h-metal bands in my life so far ,but Rammstein stands alone at the top with there creative sound .

Simple, they are unique. There is so much real pain in their music that you can't help but stop what you doing and listen. It's captivating. They have an upside to them and a funny side, but the painful side is where they truly shine. Some of it is truly heart breaking and I love them for it. Rammstein is life, very few bands can capture that

I think the real key to their enduring appeal is their sense of humor coupled with their willingness to tackle controversial/difficult themes. Bands tend to get overly serious and self important, or they go TOO silly or vapid. They ride the line artfully and have for decades

Because Rammstein is the best band known to man and my favourite hands down! The bridge in Mein Herz Brennt is intoxicating. A day without Rammstein is like a day without sunshine 🌞

Honestly, it's not the language that sounds metal, it's the way the language is spoken. If you yelled "butterfly", it would sound intimidating to a foreigner just as much as schmetterling. Try saying schmetterling like you would say butterfly, it's just as gentle.

Even my 73-year old Asian father knows and likes Rammstein. (He discovered them by himself) That’s how popular they are. 😂❤

This video was realeased just before they dropped the 2019 album and went on world stadium tour (corona stopped the tour though). That tour (continued this year) is now ending and was an INSANE success, they instantly announced a new europe tour for 2023 and have sold out ONE MILLION tickets in a few hours. Absolutely insane for a foreign language band in a "niche" music genre.

There is another thing: If you look at their videos, you will notice them exchanging smiles, winks, small gestures; They are doing what they love with their very best friends.

Fantastic music. Great visuals. Wonderful stage shows. Poetry. Social commentary. Amazing videos. Till’s voice. Till’s voice. Till’s voice.

“Deutschland” is the best damn thing to happen to music in a long time.

Also: Till Lindemann is a learned pryotechnician, he always works on the stage fireworks himself.

Came into my last job and met new collegues from Russia, Turkey, Romania and Egypt, we all bonded immediately through Rammstein.

To me the first thing that really got me into Rammstein was that Lindemann's voice can be absolutely mesmerizing to me, that band is the whole reason I started learning German.

They are so popular because they put on a live performance that is in my opinion unequaled in terms of lighting, pyrotechnics and theatre. They also have great music to back it up.

After seeing them in concert in September, their shows are second to none. The amount of work put into their shows is crazy. No band comes close. Rammstein is in a universe of their own.

I am a 58 year old mum who LOVES Rammstein!! My son started playing them at home when he was in high school and That was it for me. I play their music really loud in the car when I'm on my own and people think it's weird that an older lady loves them. I want their music at my funeral. Sehnsucht was the album that initially got me interested in European metal as a young kid…also, the album that taught me that you don’t have to understand every word in order to find something moving. Up until that point, it was Metallica, Alice In Chains, Korn and all that…oddly, Rammstein ultimately led me to learning about bands like Stratovarius, Burzum and Meshuggah, too. 🤷‍♂️

Just recently found them on RU-vid and im hooked, love their visuals, their sound, their style

When someone explains how great your favorite band is for 7minutes. It honestly feels great

I would add "lyrics" to the list, since the lyrics why seemingly straight forward at times always have like a greater depth to them really. There is so much irony, hidden imagery and subtle social and political criticism to it while depicting the obscene nature and conflict of the human mind, at times sheer brutality on the outside but the deeper meaning makes them relatable and personal, showing in merciless "in your face" way that we have a part in that grotesque nature. But then I realized based on how many fans word wide probably never understood a word of that Till sings, the lyrics are probably not the reason Rammstein is popular, even though they might be very important to a more involved audience.

I was gifted the Mortal Kombat Annihilation soundtrack for Christmas of ‘97, at 10 years old, I think it was. Got hooked on “Engel” and almost convinced myself they were singing goofy English lyrics somehow. But I absolutely got addicted to their tone and have been a fan ever since. I used to blast their music right before a motocross race and it always worked wonders to get past the nerves. Love these guys.

Well i live in Kazakhstan, and during the 90s and 2000 Kazakhstan was still in close relationship with Russia and Russia was with Germany so most of the countries in USSR knew rammstein. My grandma with my close friend introduced me to them. And she still knows them, heck even my mother knows them. And my mother is a rock and metal enjoyer from like 10 years old. So i love metal from my family. I still love rammstein and metal music. Thanks to my family for introducing the best music genre to me. Rock on!

Parent (62) here. When my two than boys made me listen to ''Spieluhr'' 20 years or so ago I was blewn away. This is...Goethe, Novalis and Rilke. German classic poetry meets heavy metal. It is certainly not my kind of music, but it also certainly is quality. These guys were and are top musicians and top artists.

I am new to the Rammstein craze. These guys are weird, and I love it! They give a big 🖕to conventional. I’ve been a metal head for 40 years, even took my daughters to metal concerts but I didn’t know much about Rammstein. I really missed out.

I first heard Rammstein when I bought the Matrix movie soundtrack. "Du Hast" was one of the songs on it, and I instantly became a fan of the band.

There Paris concert footage is a god damn masterpiece of cinematic glory in every form. It truely is a work of art and will last the test of time.

The du hust bazooka stunt was wild and the most amazing thing I have ever seen.

I remember hearing Du Hast back when they came out and was blown away. I had to get the CD and jam out, I became and instant fan.
