They had the autopilot (AP) and autothrottles (AT) both on. They were in Flight Level Change mode with altitude 0 selected. Even after the AP was disconnected, the AT remained on, commanding the motors to a low power setting for descent to 0 feet as "commanded". You can raise the nose, but without power, the airspeed simply bleeds off. You need power to arrest the descent rate (there's some low speed protections if you get really slow, but it's too complicated to explain here). But the plane did exactly what is was commanded to do. It was descending at low power to an altitude of 0 feet. Not an uncommon command for a plane that was above glidepath (although 1000 ft is more commonly used instead of 0, "just in case", as was this case). All they had to do was disconnect the AT and push the power up, or change modes.The problem is that the captain (new to the Boeing 777) did not change modes when they got to a proper visual glidepath. He was coming from an Airbus, and those throttles operate differently and he wasn't used to disconnecting or overriding the AT. The Check Airman (instructor pilot) failed to instruct/intervene (I blame him, not the "student" captain). The pilot in the jumpseat could have just put his foot on the throttles and shoved them forward. But he just watched it all happen. Call me a racist, but that's the asian culture. They've been hammered for many decades by the NTSB for that. They simply don't benefit from multi-crew teamwork (lack of). Better to crash than insult the captain by telling him to change mode to Vertical Speed when they got established on (and went through) the visual glidepath (or saying, "push the f-ing throttles up"). This was a blunder of epic proportions. A Cessna 152 student would have done far better. The captain got tunnel vision and got too far behind the aircraft, and could figure out what the problem was. The Check Airman/Instructor was the pilot in command bears full responsibility since the captain wasn't yet qualified. I'm a senior airline captain with 777 experience. I depend heavily on my First Officer to correct the most minor errors I might make. In return, I buy the beer (I've never flown a "perfect flight"). That's the way it is in the Western World of flying (and ships)

Somewhat simple explanation: captain kuk selected level change mode on their FCU which make the auto throttle add thrust and the autopilot pitch up to climb to 3000 feet. Captain kuk didn't want to climb though, he wanted to continue the approach so he pulled back the thrust levers back to idle. That made the autothrottle thinks the pilot is controlling the thrust levers they go into HOLD mode which basically means the autothrottle isn't moving the throttle at all. This also disengage the autothrottle "wake up" feature on low speed

They're supposed to always check their airspeed, regardless. He overrode part of the computer when it tried to take them back up to 3000ft, but didn't know that doing so would disengage the auto-throttle. None of the pilots noticed.

These accidents are really rare. Plus all the investigations that went on and how they've corrected issues on the airport side you'd be fine flying in and out. Plus out of the 3 casualties 2 didn't wear seatbelts which flung them out of the plane. Meanwhile the cabin crew and other passengers who did wear seatbelts escaped with injuries

To be entirely honest, I've flied in and out of San Francisco for maybe 7-10 times and each time it went pretty smoothly. However, there's always a chance of an incident occurring

Really? That's odd, because I checked that all the 3 dead people were passengers.

Pilots enjoy flying. In VMC, most pilots click the autopilot off and fly manually on final approach. Western World pilots have no problem with this most basic of flying skills. Most American and European pilots learned to fly in planes that required flying skills. The rest of the world leans mostly in simulators and become system managers instead of aviators (the exception is their military pilots, who generally stay in their relatively prestigious positions). If you can’t hand fly a plane to a runway that is in plain view in clear weather, you probably shouldn’t be flying an airliner full of passengers. Yes, use an autopilot when other problems demand your attention. But this was a perfectly good airplane in good weather. Nothing was wrong except that they had to use basic pilot judgement to determine their glide path. The real problem was that they didn’t change flight modes and stop the descent, which was the result of poor crew coordination. The Check Airman is to blame because he’s an expert on the plane and he’s likely seen this rookie mistake lots of times. The Captain/student reverted to his previous Airbus mentality, and the CKA should have caught this.
