Dining on a Dime heads to beautiful Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for its record-breaking 12th season (What record, exactly? We’ll never tell!). Host Lucas Peterson’s first stop on his tour through the City of Brotherly Love is in the heart of South Philadelphia, a.k.a South Philly, to a casual, cafeteria-style Indonesian restaurant that’s cooking up favorites of the Southeast Asian archipelago like rendang and satay.

I'm Indonesian, and we actually still use spoon for wet mushy food like that lol.. you don't have to force yourself eat with your bare hand if it makes you uncomfortable.. we just prefer to use our hands because it's more easier and more satisfying, rather than being pricky with knife and spoon..

FYI, there are at least 5 types of beef rendang recipe in Indonesia, what captured in this video is Javanese soupy beef rendang. There is also Javanese dried rendang, which to westeners will appear as rendang steak or jerky. The signature of Javanese will be the sweeter. Then the famous Padang (West Sumatera) rendang, a soupy and drier one. Signature of Padang beef rendang is the spiciness and heat (as in a lot of chilly). Then there is Medanese beef rendang, which has thick soupy spices and coconut milk reduction.

The second statement is definitely negative to some extend. Btw, "typical insider"? and also do you mean their instead of they're?

I'm indonesian, and i'll say, that was the biggest meat i've ever seen on a sate. We indonesian most of the time not having those big meat on our sate, more like a small ones like a thumb size meat on the scewers, but i think that size is to compensate the western type of barbeque style of meat. Looks good make me want to go their and got me a one plate of those sate!

In his videos he's usually bubbly and hyperactive. A little serious and under the weather today? East coast weather would do that to you, if show is not pre taped.

Indonesian food tastes alot better when eaten together, meaning a single spoonful needs to have a bit of everything infront of you along with some ketchap manis or any other sauce 😍 that's the genius of it

honestly u wont find sate that big on the streets in indonesia.. they always make it so small like one bite per skewer cause you can grill it a lot faster and get charred easier

Fair enough since the price in Indonesia is usually less than $1

@@haydid not in Jakarta. Even chicken satay more than $1. But the sate Madura here is big and looks like all meat maybe.

We indonesians don't always eat with hand. It depends what you eat. If you eat noodles, than you must use spoon and fork instead of your hand. If you eat soup, than you need spoon. We eat with hand exactly when you eat rice, it is easier. And yah, we indonesia eat rice more than the side dishes.

I can say from the look of it it wasn't a great and authentic Beef Rendang. You should pay a visit to a dedicated Padang Restaurant (Nasi Padang) in the State to get the true test of it, where the dish originally coming from. Great video though!

Riza Iskandar I thought so.. Shouldn't rendang cooked for few hours, resulted in blistering spicinesd, low moisture (evaporated) with meat braised of spice and coconut milk? I'm cooking myself meantime😊 End of the video, I was searching for the different in Rendang between us, Malaysian, and Indonesian.. Looks similiar albeit of different spice layered On the other note, the highlight of tomato paste, mention by Lucas sounds abit off than what we'd commonly have.

Maybe this one is not padang style rendang, every region in Indonesia has different way of cooking rendang (in the place where I live for example, the rendang is too sweet for my liking) that's why imo Rendang from Padang is the best

Jangan dibedakan.
