Why Scania & Volvo Keep Battling To Be The Strongest?
Volvo Trucks has just launched its latest marvel, the Volvo D17 engine, setting a new benchmark in the heavy-duty trucking industry. Designed specifically for the iconic FH16 truck series, this 17-liter engine boasts an unprecedented power output of up to 780 horsepower and a staggering 3800 Newton-meters of torque.
Which is just enough to outperform the Scania V8 engine with 770 hp and 3700 Nm, making Volvo the strongest truck engine manufacturer in Europe.
But why have Scania and Volvo always battled to have the strongest engine?
let's take a look back at the history behind the rivalry between Scania and Volvo

Some dates are wrong. Indeed Scania introduced the new model range in 2016 but they kept the 730hp as top of the line until late 2020 when they introduced the newest V8 engine generation with its 770hp. So Scania didnt had the crown for eight years. It was just a bit more than 3 years until Volvo launched their brand new 17.3l engine.

@hoost3056
@hoost3056 Месяц назад
@bendermi no, unless the customer asks for that style of mapping. Even when the transmission is put in manual mode you don't get max power in the lower gears unless you ask the dealer to do it or get a remap from someone. The Volvo I drive now has a moderate hp/high torque tune from the factory ( 455hp/1850 ft-lbs ) and in manual mode or performance mode the engine doesn't go nowhere near the horsepower peak just because of the factory tune. It shifts slow and low, and gets high 7s to low 8s all the time. It can do better with more responsive tuning but the factory tune is for a new driver so they don't kill themselves. I've been driving for decades and am used to manual trucks and high powered vehicles.

Speaking of Volvo and Scania, I am interested in one question - since in Australia they use both European and american models of trucks, and both cabovers and long nosed, and we all know that both Scania and Volvo have long nosed models like the Volvo VNL and Scania T series, why aren't these two models of the brands popular in Australia? May be you can do a video on that topic.
@audoinxr6372

T cabs don't exist from factory anymore. We still see the older series 3 ones from time to time. Volvo dropped the VN series back in late 90s and no one can say why. Although the new VNLs being 100% American manufactured means that it would be a large task to get RHD and Aus legal. Something they don't want to bother with in such a small market.

I'm inclined to believe that they don't battle each other for having the most powerful engine for the sake of having the most powerful engine. Instead, they both operate in the same market and neither can affort to fall significantly behind. Also in parts of Scandinavia and Finland trucks can be significantly more heavy than elsewhere (exception is of course Australia), and it's often somewhat mountaineous terrain. So even with 780HP it might not be an absurd abundance of power and the need for more is easily justifiable. It then boils down to who's having the more lucky hand with their latest development, and when the next release of a newer version happens.

Swede here: Why did Saab and Volvo battle over safety? Simple: Cause why the fuck not? Some healty competition never hurts. One makes something better and the other one has to step its game up and so one. Eventually both will be better in general than the rest. Volvo and Saab cars were among the safest in the world at their glory time. And Scania and Volvo are among the best trucks in its own league above the rest. Also, as a worker at research on Scania, hearing the news of the 780 Volvo... It made most of us laugh... Like come on 10hp? I guess 800 is there for us... Unlike their D17, our DC16 is proven, and capable of 1200... Just needs a stronger gearbox and aftertreatment system. And also cooling.

Years ago I laughed at Volvos ad about their newest engina at the time. "We have gained the tourque of the V8". They referred to Scanias top engine at the time. I thought, do they really think that Scania stopped developing their V8?! I don't think I6 will ever gain the tourque of V8 as long they both developed simultanius. And if it true that one here said that Volvo messurres from flywheel and Scania from wheels, the comparing is unfair.
@adamhlali8106
@adamhlali8106 19 дней назад
@@markusylitalo8376 I think both measure the engine. You cant measure torque on the wheels, just horsepower. The torque at the propshaft is around 26000+ nm. And you can reach the torque of a V8 in an I6, however, something that isnt talked about is power delivery. A V8 has a much more balanced power output, while a I6 have "deadspots" where the engine isnt pumping out the top power even if its in the right RPM range. And yes, it is noticable if you drive one. I notice the different engines after a few meters.

It has a few reasons, a V8 in US trucks makes less sense since you have a nose and therefore length of the engine is less of an issue. Also weight, in Finland they a road legal truck and trailer may weigh up to 100 metric tons and that with mountains. Whilst the US is relatively flat Europe has 3 mountain ranges, with the Alps the pyrenese and technically the ural mountains in Russia but that is a bit of the split between Europe and Asia. And even then those extreme engines are a rare sight with only fanbases driving those. But most are still between that 400 to 550 HP mark.

There was a lot of battling in the 1960/70's that's when the horsepower race really started in Europe. It's also what began the end of the British truck industry - our typical attitude of "we're the best, take us or leave us" and the market left them. Thing is, Britain was the best for a long time, but we sat on our hands whilst the competition over took us. In the mid 60's, your best offerings from a British truck manufacturer was a 180hp Gardner, a Leyland 680 (180-200hp) or some offered a 220 Cummins usually detuned to 205hp. When trucks like the Volvo F88 dropped with 270hp in 1965 then the first Scania V8's in 1969 with 350hp it's no wonder our hauliers switched. Numbers aren't that impressive today but going from 180hp to 270hp is a 50% increase in power - staggering at the time. Imagine one of the US truck manufacturers announcing tomorrow that they were releasing a 900hp otr truck - that's how significant that's how significant those power gains were in the 60/70's TV

But there were in the Volvos and Scania Vabis that were later sold in the UK. As for Volvo, mostly F86 was sold in the UK. @@spv1093 That was the thing, British hauliers were tight with their money which is why the F86 was more popular then the F88. You had a real good boss if you got any options that were for driver comfort. With the Swedish manufacturers things like heaters were standard fitment. Sleeper cabs weren't a big thing in British trucks either - drivers were generally expected to sleep on top of cover over the engine hump in the cab 😂

You need to study your specs a lot more thoroughly before posting these videos. The Volvo F-series was released in 1977 with a 10 liter F10 and a 12liter F12. Top of the line at release was 320hp. 1979 saw the Globetrotter cab emerge and be a huge success for the F12. The F-series got a big brother in 1988 with the 16liter 465hp F16, and then rightly evolved into the FH series in 1993. Scania ran 11 and 14liter engines from their 110 straight 6 and 140 V8 up through the years, coming out with a smaller 8liter with the 2 series, the 82, upgraded to 9 liters with the 93. Along with the 4 series came also a 16liter V8 as the new king of the road, and as they say, the rest is history. The 2 brands have always battled. Not only on horsepower. On everything. Safety, fuel mileage, design, ease of use, smoothest transmission, heaviest hauler, highest payload, driver comfort... For a great many years they have been the benchmark trucks, although way outsold by Mercedes and also compeeting with great trucks made by dutch PACCAR owned Daf.

Where are the German trucks? Any of them above 700hp? The last time I knew, MAN managed 680hp with their last V8 engine, before pursuing a straight six. It was temporarily the most powerful, as Volvo and Scania were still loitering around 600hp.

No. The 16 litre engine Volvo introduced in 1987 was an inline 6 with 470hp at first. The only V8 Volvo has mounted in a truck was a 3.6 litre petrol engine, B36, with 120hp, made between 1956 and 1966
