Why Sexual Violence in South Korea's Military Have Driven Some to Suicide | Violation

South Korea’s 550,000-member military is considered one of its most hierarchical and male-dominant institutions. In a survey conducted by the Defense Ministry in 2019, fewer than one-third of those who said they had experienced sexual assault reported it to the authorities, as most of them felt “nothing would happen.”
In 2021, a 22 year-old female Korean soldier, Lee Yaeram, committed suicide after being repeatedly sexually assaulted by her male colleague. Her death incited national outrage, prompting an amendment of the Military Court Act. The proposal calls for limiting military court to first trials and transferring appeals to civilian courts.
VICE World News speaks to Bang Hyelin, a survivor of sexual violence and former Captain at the ROK Marines about her experiences in South Korea’s military.
VICE World News reached out to South Korea’s Ministry of Defence for comments. We did not receive a response at the time of publication.

It's weird when you want people to join the military but then you allow those people to be sexually assaulted. Then you act like the military is such a great thing. I remember the cases of rape in the military and murders and suicides. It's all preventable. Reputation my ass, this is your Reputation so fix it. If you care so much, show you'll make sure everyone is treated equally. This sort of thing angers me, this is a short rant.

The awful thing I heard is that it's a vicious cycle that never ends. Say a person suffered from being subjected to their superior/senior. But eventually they won't be in the military forever, but then if the junior becomes someone of a higher rank when newer recruits arrive, they repeat (not all of them) the actions that were done to them out of vengeance. While this is an issue in society, the idea of rank in Korean culture could also be a root of the problem.

Sexual harassment not only happens in the South Korean Military but is prevalent worldwide in the Military. I have seen many cases on American news channels of female soldiers that were raped and sexually harassed and then murdered by the perpetrator when it was reported. The officers in charge also try to suppress it and don't take the victim seriously.

I served in the ROKAF as part of my mandatory service. The air base Lee was stationed in had a reputation in the Air Force that it's one of the worst bases to be stationed in, because of the working condition and toxic high-ranking officers and NCOs. The Korean military is a toxic institution that is the root of so many societal issues in South Korea

@@_bloomoon_ It's not a simple yes or no. The government sees conscription as the main means to keep up with the military of its East Asian neighbors (+ Russia), and many Koreans would agree with this sentiment (although recent polls show otherwise). Also toxic morals and values from military is so ingrained into the Korean society that removing conscription itself won't resolve societal issues, but it does mean freeing Korean males from systemic oppression.

I 100% agree with you. I think “we are all family” of Korean culture is a double edge sword. Not all of us have rapist and incest in our family so when these people excuse bad behaviors by saying “ you have to forgive your family”, I would like to say “fuck you”. Fucking blaming the victim is always textbook 101 in SK. I hate watching news in Korea, I start screaming at the TV. Such injustice!!! I don’t think it’s about not taking seriously, it’s about feeling pressure to conform to social norms, especially when the military is all about unity. Women are just as susceptible to misogynistic attitudes as men. It’s why this is such a problem. You have every single young man in Korean passing through the military, potentially leaving with worst ideas about sexual assault and consent then they entered with.

This happens in militaries all around the world in each country that has one. Being a female vet I’ve seen my dorm mates get thrown around until I ran into their room at 4am and there was a guy covering her mouth while tears were streaming down her face. Another instance where women who are officers speak up and get looked down upon for taking their assailant to court and I have sooo many stories. The military has a deep rooted problem with sexual assault and violence against men and women but mostly women get it the most. I remember my mom asked me, “ why do you walk around looking mean?” Like most women I do it to protect myself. Most of the women in my Life have been abused and/or sexually assaulted in some point in our lives. Including myself when I became a contractor and started working abroad, I thought a good family friend, at the time was my friend but I learned very quickly nope he’s not and he tried it. Well to his luck he tried the right one and used my Muay Thai and BJJ training to beat him up. I don’t feel no shame in stating that and that I gave him 2 black eyes and asked his father and brother to come get him before I finish him off. Our families were close but not no more when I told his and my family what he tried to do to me.

I have tried every passive thing in the book to get them to leave me alone. Making myself ugly, etc. etc. But literally only being mean works. Good for you standing up for yourself. I hope the majority of us can make it to where you are one day. Most men are generally abusive, selfish, sex obsessed, and therefore not worth anything. Men aren't going to change. We need to educate women on realities, not propaganda like material in media from patriarchal entities making us all weak, focused on the wrong things (looking sexy), thinking we need to be in a relationship, etc. And unite to become stronger than men so we can protect ourselves.

Sometimes it takes time and experience of mistakes, falling, heart, and darkness to unveil the steps of truth and of justice to one’s ignorance and fear and the building of courage to act upon it and to change. With negative growth rate in population whilst the Korean youths preference to remain single with growing expense, there's high rise in suicidal tendency as well. South Korean is not like you see in their drama, people are very much private and don't share their problem leading them severe mental disease. If things goes the same way as it is right now, they'll be first nation to go extinct followed by Japan.

As a person who is in South Korea, it's difficult to look out for these things working alongside the ROK. Largely because they avoid most of us foreigners unless the rank looks high enough that they have no choice but to show respect to us. Yet, even then they tend to appear on their best behavior. People love to blame the west for everything that Asia does, but the whole continent has already had its own culture way before colonization. A lot of their traditions, although heavily outdated, morally corrupt, and wrong, still continues to this day. So what they would need to look for is to change a large part of the civilization of the hermit kingdom, which a lot of old people are in power who refuse change. South Korea is one of the many vain countries out here. Don't let their "looks" fool you, especially if you don't actually know what it's like living here.

Korea has a huge issue with women's right to privacy and dignity. The hidden toilet cams are prolific and expected. It's typical to check for cameras if you can prior to being comprised. But every society has to grapple with women being in the military, where men need excess testosterone to be effective in combat. This obviously can make single childless men more persistent but there's never an excuse for assault or coercion or intimidation. Korea is also still relatively patriarchal compared to the states or Europe. Single motherhood is still taboo and much harder to manage in Korea. The simplest solution is to prosecute fairly then implement severe consequences for rape. End of. You want to encourage honest reporting (false allegations need harsh consequences) that will be reciprocated with safety and pursuit of justice and protection from reprisals.
@layloo5244

@helenhoward5346
@helenhoward5346 2 года назад
@@layloo5244 I said it's never an excuse, the vast majority of men have agency over their animalistic drives. I'm just saying the excess testosterone increases libido and aggression, but obviously that doesn't make a good decent guy an impulsive rapist... Plz observe each sentence and implied nuance. I pretty much implied what you're criticizing me over. I mean you'd have to posses a warped view of reality if you think that men, in general, will rape you but working in male dominated units then you should try to be socially and interpersonally aware. Here's the thing, it's an intense communal bonding based world. If you've been deployed to a combat zone, especially for field units, you HAVE to at least try to form attachments to the other "guys" so they'll want to have your back more and vice versa. This can present complicated issues when females are thrown into this mix of the brotherhood. They'll instinctively feel obligated to protect you and that can create some odd dynamics depending on individual circumstances. Men and women are attracted to each other. Romantic and/or sexual relationships and interactions are extremely varied and individual obviously. Apologies, I pointlessly ramble when fatigued.
@delilah28100
@delilah28100 2 года назад
Why bring hormones in this talk?! Hormones might affect one's mood but your behavior is totally yours. If one would use hormone as an excuse, then women should be excuse if they commit a crime because they have PMS, those hormones are worst than testosterone.
@helenhoward5346
@helenhoward5346 2 года назад
@@delilah28100 I may not have mentioned earlier that I truly believe men's instinctual drives push them to protect rather than harm first and foremost. Societies wouldn't have thrived and women, even today, would be in grave peril when men of "marital" age are largely absent (it's also a problem when there is an excess or disruptive proportional difference statistically). HOWEVER THIS IS A CULTURAL PROBLEM and if you really want to grapple with it then enforce consequences fairly justly and educate the society why it's important to respect women's boundaries and how. It's just evolutionary biological fact/generality that young single men (think 16-25ish) who aren't raising biological children at present have excess testosterone AND a haven't fully matured their brain's full frontal cortex which happen at around 25-27 for males, which helps us apply the brakes on our impulses with consideration for consequences and the feelings of others. Still, most guys will absolutely respect a woman who's sending nonverbal cues that she's uncomfortable (if you were socialized as a child by your parents that is) and even more will stop the behavior if they're asked or told to. But let's combine that with alcohol or drugs, no excuse there either as consumption is generally of one's free choice however teenagers are fucking stupid af sometimes when they're alone with others of their peer group WHILE partaking in other risky behaviors like smoking, psychoactive intake, promiscuity, truancy, casual physical violence, criminal acts like theft, etc etc... Then you're just like ok then, it's clear kids like these have poor impulse control and might be immature +/ troubled Look I understand it's a nuanced topic here and I'm not blaming hormones for anything but it IS the biological driver for sex drive, partner selection and aggression. However hormones can't separate these two and we can't really control how hormones affect us but they don't dictate choices. I just think that young men need to be taught the reasons behind their urges and realize that our ability to make conscious decisions for the future and how they impact others especially those closest to us is what separates us from animals that "rape" and brutalize each other. Evolutionary psychology should be mandatory to graduate highschool bc women need to know this too as well as about their hormones and reproductive crap. No one should be blamed bc of age, sex, gender, sexuality, none of that. Just state the facts and risk factors and prevention techniques.

I thought to myself, "This is not my Court martial! What type of BS is this"?! Even though there were 3 other girls that came forward with me (There were more, but they didn't want to come forward) he only got 15 days in the ships brig, but then a girl tried to go AWOL and they had to put her in the brig and you can't have males and females in the ship's brig together, so they sent him home. I don't know if he finished his brig time at another brig on land, but still 15 days was a joke. My friend was raped at a party. She had too much to drink and decided to sleep in a friend's car. She woke up to a guy on top of her raping her and he got off scott free because they were both drinking and it was a he said verses she said.
