People don’t want to admit that their tics are directly related to their emotions and thoughts but most times they are, and sometimes it’s even a thought of “this would be a really bad time to have a tick or this certain one” that triggers it.

I'm deeply sorry that happened to you I just want to point out that a lot of children who underwent that type of trauma, but don't process it properly, are more likely to grow up with extremely unhealthy views on sex and love. It doesn't necessarily mean they'll become predators, although that is pretty common unfortunately. It just means that their perceptions can be incredibly skewed from what is considered normal. Shane is actually a really good example of this. As far as I know, he hasn't actually molested or raped anyone, but he is incredibly inappropriate towards children. For example, he thinks 5 year olds are sexual. I'm no psychologist, but it seems likely he holds that opinion because he was introduced to sexual activity very young himself, so that's "normal" to him, even if he may consciously know it isn't right. There are many things in life that are considered "normal but not right", and he probably uses that logic to excuse his views. Anecdotal evidence can be very strong, especially to someone in denial. Shane needs intense therapy, if not for himself then for any potential victims that he may create if his predatory and unhealthy behaviours escalate. His past doesn't excuse his actions, it just helps kind of explain it. I was also molested as a child, over the course of a few years. I'm deeply interested in why some kids like us will grow up to continue the cycle, while others don't. I personally can not fathom wanting to inflict this pain on a child. I specifically want to prevent it from ever happening to another kid, ever again. It's a morbid curiosity that I've done a lot of research on.

I’m just curious, I listened to a podcast where Shane talks about how he discovered he was a CSA victim. On a podcast he talks about how His therapist gave him a list of characteristics of a CSA survivor and he “checked off every box” like not liking humidity, and not liking when his face feels “wet”. So after that he came to the conclusion that something happened to him in his past although he doesn’t know who did it or when. This is a problem for big SA cases because a therapist can really convince their clients of past trauma when there is no evidence. This has happened when parents fight custody battles or a few cases when grandparents are falsely accused. As a CSA victim this scares me that he could be using that as an excuse to be a Predator

Acting on and embracing pedophilic or psychopathic desires is vile, but attempts to control said desires as direct effects of mental illness is respectable. There are some individuals who cannot be redeemed, but those who recognize their own illness and attempt to prevent it from spiraling out of control and causing harm to others do have a chance and shouldn't be shunned.

I’m glad there’s someone in these comments who actually has experience on the subject; lotta armchair experts here speculating on a mans mental state and intentions based on their reflexive reaction. I don’t have an opinion because we will probably never know the whole story. It could be that Shane WAS abused as a child but wasn’t ready to face it when he wrote his book. It could be that he had a questionable relationship/experience when he was a kid and he still hasn’t figured it all out, it could be that’s he’s sick himself, it could be that he just got famous being insane and now he’s paying the price... I wish we lived in a world where actual experts were the ones discussing this situation publicly...we’d have a much more knowledgeable and informational discussion.

I always knew what he did was wrong though. Whats weird is that it's so much harder trying to stop making excuses for my parents abuse (mostly emotional/verbal). I think as kids we know near instinctively that we need the big people to survive, so one of many coping mechanisms is to excuse them, like it's Stockholm syndrome. I had the similar situation, 14 with a 21 year old. Groomed and manipulated for 7 years, because I didn't know any better, that's all I knew from literally a teenager to an adult where I was lost being even an adult. Being 26 now, healthy and looking back, HORRIBLE.

I know children who were abused can be hyper sexual but I’ve never heard of someone becoming a pedophile, especially not so publicly. His actions defending pedophilia are also really odd, he has much deeper issues.I did my undergrad in psych and am a survivor of abuse, and no....never seen anything like this in someone who was molested. Often times a victim will continue to victimize themselves unintentionally (abusive relationships, self harm, etc), not the other way around, but there’s fewer statistics on males. It could be him seeking the same power and control his abuser had. But regardless, there’s zero justification for his actions- zero. Plenty of people grow up and deal with their trauma in a healthy way.

Sometimes people can just forget they were molested. Like, they just forget it because it was so shocking. But if something triggeres the memory theyll break down and cry. I mean, I don't know the context of his statement about the 5-year-old, but I guess I do kinda get what he's saying. If your body is getting ready for sex, but in your mind you're 5 years old and you just discover things that feel nice, it's kinda logical that you want to try them out with your friends, not knowing that you're doing a bad thing. I was kinda with him on that one, but then the rest came and made it way creepier... Like, talking about sex with your 12 year old cousin on camera is weird and calling a 6 year old sexy (instead of maybe "She looked like she would grow into a beautiful woman" or something), that's crossing a border for me.
