Silent Hill is a beloved horror classic, but as with many classic games, many argue that it has aged poorly. Is that really true, though? Or is there still plenty of value to be found in games we regard as janky by modern standards? Let's find out together.

For actual scares? Definitely Silent Hill. Silent Hill 3 (for me) is definitely a gut punch for me in particular. For story/feels? The Fatal Frame series. Some of the overarching themes of each of them get me tearing up everytime. Nostalgia? Clock Tower, particularly the very first one on SNES and Clock Tower 3 for PS2. Some of the old music stings and imagery still make me jump.

I just got myself hooked into the Silent Hill games as of late (still in Silent Hill 2), so watching this was really fun informative treat. I agree a lot with your stance regarding game preservation, it’s honestly baffling that for how iconic of a franchise this series is, the lack of accessibility is very saddening. Remakes are cool don’t get me wrong, but like you said, why can’t both versions stand together? That aside, great video as always!

Loved this analysis! You knocked it out of the park as always! Another note on the insects we see in Alessa's room is that they could represent the metamorphosis of Alessa/Cheryl. One must be changed in order to become something new. Alessa becomes a chrysalis after the fire by being wrapped in bandages, only for her to become a host for the winged incubus. I feel that highlighting a butterfly, famous for its transformations was definitely a specific choice! Also, ma'am, I am begging you to play signalis at some point. Even if you don't make a video, the space lesbians and silent hill inspiration make it a modern classic. I feel like there is more than enough for you to sink your teeth into in terms of analysis. Again, great work in the video! I will now patiently await the next one.

I definitely vibe with what you were saying at the end about meeting media where it's at and the nature of remakes. A series I really love is .hack, especially the original IMOQ quadrilogy. I see a lot of people making videos on it these days speaking about the possibility of remakes to 'improve the game' and I think often miss the fascinating undertones that I've personally fallen in love with. Part of it is certainly tied to the time period it was made in, but a lot of that made it have a really unique message that resonated a lot with me. Kind of like how certain limitations in Silent Hill, like the fog, adds to the general atmosphere of the game. I think this insistence on doing something 'better' often gets in the way of really listening to art. Art in all forms is a form of communication, and a part of that communication is the context of how it's made. For .hack that means stuff like what did they think a world where the internet was a part of everyday life would change things, which has felt rather prophetic to me. And with Silent Hill, I think there's a lot to dig into, like how Lisa is portrayed, which could be lost in translation with a remake. Thanks for the video and the good thoughts

Y'know, I never played Silent Hill and never actually knew it's story. The twist about Alessa and her nightmare infesting the town the way they did, reminds me a Lot of Persona 1, actually. Persona 1 isn't nearly as grim of course and the monsters (/demons) aren't as directly tied to the dreams of [P1 spoilers] the real Maki as Alessa's are, but I thought the similarity of the concept was interesting.

Wow this is incredible! A couple minor things: ▪︎The Incubus boss can be beat without taking any damage by strafing in a large circle rather than the standard running. I was waiting on you to bring that mechanic up in the review as I feel it's an underrated evasive maneuver and has saved my skill in numerous playthroughs. LOL ▪︎The Newspaper from 7 Years Ago doesn't technically say Alessa died in the fire. It says her charred body is found in the aftermath, which could allude to the fire being extinguished by FRD. If it was just left to run itself out in a small resort town well... I think a lot more than a couple houses would've been claimed. ▪︎Technically Toyama prefers the Good+ ending as the true ending. I believe he said something along the lines that he hypothesizes that Owaku wrote SH3 with Good ending in mind but not being sure as Owaku does go on to say "Cybil is not involved in Silent Hill 3. What happens to her afterwards is left to the player's imaginations." - which would kind imply he wasn't married to either one either. In a weird schrodinger's cat kind of logic, I guess it's best to say they both are and aren't canon. Now interestingly enough both the Silent Hill 1 novelization and Play Novel (GBA) adapt SH1's story with the Good+ as canon but those external materials are adaptations of the original and therefore shouldn't have any sway on the final outcome. All this aside and in any case, excellent video! Silent Hill is one of my favorite gaming franchises (well at least the first four) and the original in particular deserves so much more love!

This is a BRILLIANT video. Legit, I can see exactly where you had fun with this, and I appreciate the recaps combined with individual remarks on each part. You're right, that people SHOULD get the experience of playing the game themselves, because it's a whole different thing from watching someone else play it, or only digesting it through analysis videos- however interesting different insights can be. Personally, I think that the myriad of analysis videos on the game(s) help contribute to YOUR point about the game being left open to interpretation and as reflections of the individual playthroughs, and how it continues to engage us long after the initial experience. Now, if only there wasn't such a steep price on the old survival horror games of the 90's and early 2000's x_x And like YOU pointed out, the attempts to bury originals and remake/remaster them instead of letting them steep in their original charm. Anyway, I'm glad to see you doing something a little different here, and it's nice to see The Man get a little more screentime. He's been horrifically underutilized, and that's been my major complaint on other videos of yours, which are otherwise Chef's Kiss Perfect.

Another lovely video yet again, love the voice work as always and the little skit scenes were fun. But legit if I was in whatever uhhh park??? you were all in at that hour of the night I'd be scared shitless lmao Silent Hill is a franchise I hold near to my heart, even when the latter half of the franchise is very.... Ehhh. Its inspired me in a lot of ways, given me perspectives in a lot of things (both for fiction and also nonfiction), and also given me an unending RAGE against Konami and really just most corporations in general (amongst all the other stuff in the world that gets ruined by corpos). In this instance for primarily how the franchise has been treated, much like how you went into somewhat. Both the mistreatment of the members of Team Silent (all the different ones too, since every game basically had fewer and fewer of the original members), the treatment towards the VAs and the work they provided, and hell if I recall right even the western dev teams had a lot of issues to go through. Then you have the franchise being kept alive through a series of unholy practices (Hey much like Alessa!) and yet this refusal to properly allow the original games to see the light of day unless they're changed in some way, often made worse and mismanaged and forced through deadlines. Its so upsetting. Speaking of bad practices, I recall you mentioning having troubles with the OST and when you went through the Lisa scene I suddenly remembered a running trend in Silent Hill 1 videos in the past that made me want to ask, though I'm sure it was more than just one song, but by any chance did the track Not Tomorrow in particular from the scene with Lisa cause any problems? I remember that track in particular causing so many issues for people. But yeah I rambled enough already, hopefully this comment helps out with the algorithm, and again thanks for the fun video on a game from a franchise I enjoy

If anything, I wasn’t so much scared of anything out IN the park, but moreso that the cops would get called while we were out there or something LOL It was actually the main theme of the game that gave me copyright trouble, though, for some reason! I was thinking Not Tomorrow might get clapped as well, but as far as I can tell, it’s fine, strangely enough.

@NezumiVA You know what? Thats VERY FAIR. My creepypasta addled brain had me irrationally scared of ARG cryptids appearing, but the cops being called would've been so much worse (´TωT`) And that's so interesting, huh. I wonder why. What kind of meddling has Konami done in the background recently to cause this... Unless Yamaoka has been doing it, but idk

Okay so I don't generally play horror games myself due to my psychosis and nightmare disorder, but I LOVE learning about them because the plots just hit in either the funniest least successful way or genuinely resonate in a way its almost impossible to replicate in other mediums and genres. That being said you're gonna have to just hear me out, because it would feel unfair to say my favorite horror game is something I haven't played, and while I don't usually play horror, visual novels where you don't have reaction time (shit reflexes I'm so bad at games) to rely on or worries about jumpscares are my JAM. Which obviously isn't the part you have to trust me on. The part you're going to have to trust me on is that it's a free to play mobile otome game. It's not REALLY a dating sim imo, like you can unlock more romance oriented content, but the focus at all times is the mystery and trying to keep you and your inner circle alive during a zombie apocalypse. The game is called Havenless. While you can name your mc anything, the auto name is Jae so I'll call her that. Jae was at lunch meeting up with her old childhood friend Shane when the outbreak happened and has been running with him ever since trying to find her little sister with no luck. The zombie virus presents itself within an hour of being bitten, but despite Jae being bitten herself when she saves a young girl from being killed by her now zombie parents, she hasn't turned. The three become a little unit trying to find somewhere safe and Jae's sister, and also pick up a man named Lance who seemed lost, and find a safe refuge with its own community. A church with a leader that claims to have seen your sister, and says he'll give the information if you use your skills to help gather resources and protect the congregation. Things get more and more suspect at every turn, meeting a lone, sweet man who's blood can cure the virus if it hasn't been in the body too long who was cast out as the antichrist from the church body, missing people, and even your own companions showing signs of suspicion. It's got cults, mild cannibalism, human experiments, found family, a short badass female love interest named Sam who I'm in love with, and moments so full of tragedy and emotion it made me cry. The true ending is a painful victory that feels hollow with the scenes you can unlock from the perspectives of the "Love interests" but is fascinating and haunts me. It's still never gotten any official answers but the studio released a spinoff that you play as Jae's little sister a few years later within a safe zone ran by people from the spinoff prequel of havenless that at least lets you know that she's alive. Jae also gets to punch a guy in the dick so anyways play Havenless

silent hill (as a series) is so profoundly important to me ever since i first got into it 3 years ago, and seeing this retrospective is so, so nice. i have consistently been enamored with your analysis with each subsequent video of yours i see (you reminded me why i adored ace attorney and made me reconsider my bitterness towards it, you made me think more about FNAF than i ever did, even back in the day as a 12 year old following a new viral game), and this video again makes me realize how much there Is to silent hill 1, a game that i feel each time i play it i discover a new thing i never heard or seen before. your way of going through each section of a game and in a way making the gameplay aspect so important towards the review is such a smart stylistic choice and one i am very happy with, i don't like the recap style for other kinds of art but this is such a nice way to weave it together and, the way in which you talk about this game, criticizing it and praising it as you go, it makes your words at the end about our approach to old games ring so true to me. super tangential but silent hill 1 and especially 3 are such deeply trans games to me. the way you talked about alessa and the emotional core of sh1 being about parents needing to accept who their children Are. got to one of the biggest reasons i adore this series, can't wait to see if you ever get around to sh3. would love to see the take of a fellow trans woman on a game that might just be my favorite piece of art in the world. i hope one day you may also give signalis a look in your channel :o (IF YOU'VE PLAYED IT AND WOULD BE INTERESTED IN TALKING ABOUT IT. it's such a wonderful game) still got more of a backlog of your videos to get through, but i think i've landed upon another video essayist who's videos i'm just in love with!! haven't been able to stop watching them, even if it has costed me sleep or time to do college assignments 😅 thank you for your hard work!!

Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying. I think my stuff gets a little rougher the further you go back, of course, lol (I've definitely adjusted my approach _especially_ about my negative impressions of things, after a certain point) but I'm happy it clicks and the intent comes through. And hell yes, I would absolutely _love_ to talk about both SH3 and Signalis at some point. (Though I did do some guest voice-work in a lovely Signalis video by Codex Entry! Which I'd highly recommend.)

@@NezumiVA OH YOU DID? i loved that video on signalis to bits... i didn't mention it but your range and the emotion you put into your readings is so fucking good, your ace attorney videos are a constant showcase for that but god is it such a cool flourish! and also totally have to say i *adored* getting to hear from lisa's va in this video and how you worked all of that into this? those little bits of focus on voice work are so fantastic, i love that too. big shoutouts!!

4:37 SH 4 deserves its flowers and recognition.. I mean hell it's story has been apart of lore since SH2. It also confirms the " In Water" ending was canon.. James's father in SH 4 stated that he disappeared 1 day and never came back home. Meaning his dead. Not to mention the Soundtrack.

y'know this might be jumping the gun and there's a punchline about it at the end of the video since i don't see anyone else saying it, but: "rustic" has nothing to do with rust. it comes from the completely unrelated latin word _rusticus,_ and it basically just means rural. and my grandparents on both sides lived in the texas countryside as a kid, which i can confidently say is a hellscape the nightmare silent hill does _not_ resemble it's something that immediately stuck out to me the first time you said it, but i figured i just misheard you saying _rusted_ and continued on. except you kept using that exact descriptor and i was finding it harder to convince myself it was just me mishearing something, up to about a bit over an hour in when i had to stop and make sure i wasn't just gaslighting myself fantastic video thus far regardless. this was just really bugging me

Yeah I think I just mixed 'em up in my head unfortunately, lol. Though I suppose Silent Hill _is_ described as rural, but that's not what I was getting at, of course.

This video is so good. It validated many of my feelings toward a different old game that I also don't want to be (and am working so it isn't) forgotten.Thank you so much for the bit about preservation at the end there. Even though I disagree with the notion of relying on companies to sell us game preservation (assuming I understood your point), the message that old games still have value is important to me, and it felt nice to hear from someone I respect.
@NezumiVA

Oh, I don't think we necessarily need to _rely_ on companies for preservation, of course. I just wish they held it in similar regard to us, because I would like to support creators whenever possible.

apologies in advance for the majorly long comment, it's positive!! your piece at the end about meeting games where they're at just really resonated with me :-) I graduated last semester with a BA in history (woohoo!), and this video made me think much deeper about the application of history/historiography to video games. More and more I think people are assessing video games retrospectively as art and analyzing them through the artistic lens (as they should), but honestly I hadn't thought too hard about contextualizing video games through historical lenses (or vice versa). In part, I think video games as a medium is very contemporary; one of my professors laid out the idea that on average it takes about 50 years before historians can genuinely start doing the rigorous academic analysis of events we recognize as historical and putting them in the context of their time/how they affected thus-n-such. For my own view, I don't think it's impossible to do that rigorous historical work on more recent events, but I also think historians 50 or 100 or 200 years from now will (hopefully) get a better sense of the full picture we currently are still in the process of painting. but where does Silent Hill fit into all of this!! in the notion of "meeting it where it's at." To me, that's a very important phrase, because it's an acknowledgement that 1) time has passed and the world has changed in ways big enough that it requires that shift of perspective; and 2) that the original piece as it stands is meaningful in ways that warrant revisiting, reanalyzing, reinterpreting---essentially, warrants applying historical critical framework. And that's so exciting!!! At least in my own department, my peers and I did research on the things we were passionate or were genuinely curious about (we didn't necessarily have economic pressure looming over us besides the ones university as an institution already provides, but passion vs. capitalism is a whole other conversation), but the curiosity came from exposure to different topics or nudges around (like, "why hasn't anyone written about this from this perspective?" etc.). Personally, I never played Silent Hill; I'm kind of garbage at video games in general and I get scared too easily to find enjoyment in horror media broadly. But I love watching video essays about horror media, and I love reading articles and critical analyses of movies I'm never going to watch and seeing how they weave into our history and present day. This video essay gets me so genuinely pumped, because I think with the encouragement, the nudge, of looking at a game "despite" its "jank" is kind of the domino into further reassessment and analysis. And you very beautifully laid out these ideas of inspiration from the start! How much of our media or our art been inspired by Silent Hill, itself inspired by Jacob's Ladder, in part an exercise of reckoning with the Vietnam War and American militarism, inspired by the 1961 French short film "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," an adaptation of the short story written in the 1890s by Ambrose Bierce that was reckoning with his own experience as a Civil War veteran, and back and back and back and back. Essentially: maybe one day someone out there is going to make some research dissertation that's called something like, I don't know, "War and Horror: Silent Hill's Tank Controls and its Military-Moulded Historical Context," or something else super pretentious like that, and I'm genuinely looking forward to reading it. That said, without the work of essayists like you advocating for that reassessment and revisitation, to meet it where it's at, and look at it in the same way we would look at an artifact or a piece in an archive; it gives depth and encourages more and more people to trace and understand these layers and look at them in ways we maybe haven't yet. I know producing work like this can feel thankless sometimes, or something that's going to get ground up in the content-mill (at least, I've felt this way about my own writing at times), and I don't personally have a solution for this, but I hope that this rambling manifesto of a comment can leave you with the impression that your work IS meaningful, inspirational, and a critical part of an analytic canon we are still yet developing. So, thank you :-)!

I went the whole school without firing a single bullet cuz I REFUSED to be a child unaliver

I ended up binging Silent Hill essays bc of your video and got introduced to a wonderful series, thank you! (I can't play horror games that aren't RPG pixel or VNs) but also the fact that the latest SH is going to be written by R07 got me thinking...the parallels of SH1 and Umineko can't be a coincidence. An old abuser into the occult fucks up a child so bad that it creates a metaphysical space that's a manifestation and coping mechanism for the child that the outsider protagonist gets caught in? The heavy exploration of family? The first (depicted) death of said abuser having to do with fire? Playing with perception? Also Flauros' presence in Umineko (who is a side character in a spinoff but was originally going to be in the main story, who from anti-fantasy represented the dynamite on the island) being used as a McGuffin that is capable of great destruction and pain for our """villain""" who was revealed to be a victim the whole time? Also that Flouros in the Ars Goetia is summoned to 'reveal certain truth of the past present and future'... God damn. If my theory is true, its very cool that R07 finally gets to work on a franchise that clearly inspired him! (I'm a touhou fan so I overanalysed the hell out of small references R07 put in bc he and ZUN are buddies, and I think it's very cool that such an amazing piece of fiction has these dorky references for me to :0 !!!)

Depends on how much ammo you had, I think! I know if you run out the game automatically kills it because you’re unable to hit it with a melee weapon (to prevent you from softlocking). But yeah if you even get hit like, twice in a row or so you’d just go down lol.
