Southern Maunsell locomotives without the smoke deflectors always look weird to me but at the same time they are growing on me, decent review here Sam, loco looks nice in the Southern Green livery.

I’m not a fan of smoke deflectors. Obviously important in real life, but I still find them aesthetic ugly. The Southern Railway started retrofitting deflectors to their locomotives (Lord Nelsons, King Arthurs, Schools Class, etc.) starting in 1931.

If I could decide which southern loco I want next that would be an E2 tank, not the railroad one which I like, but the actual real E2, brown with southern or L.B.S.C. Bringing this tank engine back in the railway range with modern standards is gonna sell like hot cakes as you said in the green e2 video.

Beautiful looking Loco Sam, Oh good heavens, if we only had these prices for Germany/Austrian models at this fidelity... But in all fairness, a grade of D is a tad harsh we thought. She performs and behaves very well, looks excellent, has been carefully put together, is fit for purpose, and our theory is that the motors in OO these days somehow seem to be behaving too troubled at high weights in analogue and therefore a lighter overall mass is/was to compensate. Just a theory but it would make sense. Quite strange though why they can't source the quality motors needed (price?) For example, our new Vectron loco from Märklin comes in at ~950 grams but the motor is a very hefty one. Of course M/Trix also always apply some traction tyres which the OO market seem to detest, but the entire loco can move a 'house' (metaphorically speaking). Better motors for higher weights just need to be sourced in OO we thought. Cheerio.
@SamsTrains
@SamsTrains 7 месяцев назад
Yeah absolutely - you guys have it rough in Europe! Yeah D does seem quite harsh - I think it's because a largeish number of small issues added up, not a bad loco overall I think! Thanks for watching, Sam :)

@@SamsTrains Superb loco IMO: one of Hornby' finest. Remember, 14-on was the prototypical normal maximum length for an express passenger train; the longest ever hauled was 26 (by an LNE V2 incidentally); so reviews spouting on about 28 or 30 carriages are in cloud-cuckoo land as far as the prototypes are concerned in day-to-day service.

I bought LN Class 30863 “Lord Rodney” when it first came out. I already had a Bachmann model from about 15 years earlier. Both models were excellent runners, but, of course, the Hornby model was a big improvement on finer detail. I have no concerns about weight, mine will easily haul 10 Bullied or BR Mark I coaches on level track. I may have inclines on my improved layout in the future, so will see if extra weight is required. I use an old Hammant and Morgan transformer control unit which I have found works very well with all the modern motors I have. Slow speed, smooth braking are performed very well, despite the unit being over 60 years old. I had the mains lead replaced and certified about eight years ago. The electrician was so fascinated with the unit he did not charge me! I paid £1.00 for it in 1964, probably the best Pound I ever spent!

Hi Sam, another nice review video. I purchased one of these locomotives about two years ago, R3635 Lord Rodney in early BR green No. 30863. Like you, I found it to be on the light side, so I added low-temp metal to the boiler, which brought the weight up to 404 grams. Some of that increase may also be to the adding of the separate details, plus a DCC sound decoder, speaker, and keep alive capacitor. It runs great and has no problem pulling my seven-coach passenger train.

i shoved a weight in the smoke box as there is some room in there, just to give it a bit more pulling power & it is now able to pull 8 coaches up my helix which has a 2% incline.

Sam, since I mentioned adding weight to my Lord Rodney (Lord Nelson class) 4-6-0 I went and weighed two other of my Southern Railway locomotives, neither of which I added any weight other than the detail parts and DCC decoder, speaker, and keep alive. As previously mentioned, the Lord Rodney weighs 404 grams, the S15 4-6-0 weighs 318 grams, and, most interestingly, the Schools class 4-4-0 weighs 346 grams, which is significant because it has a smaller tender than the two 4-6-0's.

Hi Sam, many thanks for another thought-provoking video. I think there’s scope for a comment on one of your monthly news videos about Hornby’s current range. You say there are 4 ‘Lord Nelson’ locos on Hornby’s website. As at 28/1/24 there are only 3. These are the same 3 as in the 2024 printed catalogue and all say ‘pre-order’ despite all being in the 2022 catalogue, then not 0:02 marked ‘New’. The missing 4th, ‘Lord Rodney’ is also listed in 2022. The 3 Lord Nelsons in the 2024 catalogue are joined by 1 Merchant Navy and 1 King Arthur which has a limited production run of 500 models only. Aside from Southern Tanks, that’s it. Even the two newest releases are missing: R30114 ‘Braunton’ and R30129 ‘257 Squadron’. ‘Braunton’ was announced in the 2022 range for a Q4 release. It appeared finally last September. Four months later it has disappeared almost completely. Thankfully, all is not lost. My local model shop (Arcadia, Shaw) still has one or more stock of 10 discontinued SR main locos, all at original prices. Last year, Hornby attributed their financial loss to excess stock. Clearly that’s now been heavily pruned. Their new approach mimics Accurascale by listing a very limited range for one-off production runs.

Sam - not once in your reviews have you ever mentioned a model 'getting' the prototype - capturing the presence and atmosphere of a loco. This is an area where Hornby are still pretty much unmatched, despite their quality issues elsewhere. Once again, 'Nelson' is perfectly captured. Many models from other manufacturers, with wonderful small parts and immense pulling power, simply don't manage to capture the essence of their prototypes. Hornby as ever have pulled it off here. Did you spot the bogie wheels? Not just the correct diameter, but the correct pattern also: typical Hornby and a detail often missed by their great US-based rival. This is one to test a sound system - the "Nelsons', uniquely in Britain, had eight exhaust beats per wheel revolution. I wonder if anyone's managed to correctly capture this!!! One final comment - can you please give Tractive Effort in pounds? It's the only way to directly compare with the figures 'on period' for steam. Kings 40,000, A4s 35,500lb, etc etc - these figures man something!!!

The odd one out is obviously the B12. While the B12 is a 4-6-0, she has inside cylinders instead of outside ones. Sam, I've got two new Hornby carriages on their way to me: a pre-owned Chocolate & Cream Buffet Car (last pre-owned one from Hattons last closing down sale), and an Intercity Mk. 1 brake coach from ebay. Ryan has suggested I do a review video of them. I've never done a rolling stock review video before. Can you please give me a behind the scenes look at one of your rolling stock reviews? I need a few guide pointers on what you look at, and how you give opinions etc. That would be helpful.

Hi Sam, Good review. I've got one of these and am very happy with it. It's a beautiful loco and mine runs perfectly. There's lots to like about it. I agree it's not quite up to the standards of recent releases in terms of not having firebox flicker, a diecast body or running plate, etc but otherwise it's a very nice model. The current RRP is over the top for what it is. The good news is you can pick up a mint, boxed example for MUCH less secondhand.😀

Hi Sam. I noted your comment about a lack of Hornby Southern engines. I think this is a little unfair given that in the past 10 years they have produced a merchant Navy in both styles, a battle of Britain west country class in both styles and N 15 and S 15 schools class. they have tended to focus on LSWR designs, with the exception of the schools class But there have also been a number of tanks too

I bought this loco when first came out and it has given me no trouble at all since . Would I buy it today , not a chance . There are little or no spare parts available for this loco and I don’t see that changing in the near future with the current management at Hornby. As a certain Mr Kohler said “our locos are for keeps “ Not without spare parts they are not . Maybe spare parts availability should part of your reviews . David

When running at slow speed in one direction it was very jerky, so I took the body off to see what's the issue, and lo and behold, there's a Hattons DCC chip fitted inside! A great looking loco, looking all the better not having the smoke deflectors. Not sure what the hang up is with diecast parts. Yes, I prefere them too, but I'm sure the moulding took for plastic parts is not that different to that for pressure diecast, therefore, why should it be sold cheaper ? Diecast model road vehicles don't cost a fortune, so no real reason for added cost IMO.

*Hornby claiming they have high quality, heavy, metal loco’s* *Also Hornby’s SR Lord Nelson’s being lighter than a small tank engine*

I think I kinda know why it is so light I wouldn’t say the problem is entirely the plastic construction, as the N15 you compared it to is also 100% plastic in body construction, so it’s def more of a chassis issue My theory on why they kept the void on the smokebox is to not put weight over the front bogey, as weight only equals power if it sober the driving wheels Not excusing the lightness, just trying to justify it Greta video as aways!

Sorry, over GBP 125, I won't buy. I have a N15/King Arthur from them, and it is far better. Oh, and does someone know where to buy a spare motor for a S15 ?

Cant understand you saying Hornby don't do many Southern loco's, West Country, original, West Country rebuilt, Battle of Britain, original & rebuilt, Merchant Navy, original & rebuilt, M7 in many formats, Schools class in many formats, King Arthur in many formats, how many do you want?

The box looks to be sun damaged somewhat, which would explain the colour difference.

Hey Sam I am 12 years old and just got my first new loco from hornby. I preordered the limited edition Rovex jinty and 7 plank wagon. And I had to pay 30pounds each for chipping to Canada that’s 102 Canadian dollars is this normal shipping price for Hornby?
