I think that we should not put solar panels suddenly in the middle of the desert because of transportation problems so we should make a green city in it and make high rise buildings so that tourists come and for these buildings we need electricity for that we can later plant solar panels because if we make a green city with skyscrapers we need huge roads which will make transportation easier and then we can plant solar panels. the cost will be a bit high but it would be a best place for tourists and $$$$$$$ will come from tourists who will book the rooms in the buildings and then the cost will not be a big issue then so this is my idea plz like my comment if you like my idea and dont mind if i said something dumb i am just 14yrs old

With advances in battery technology maybe you don't build transmission lines, float a boat full of batteries charged in the Sahara over to Europe and hook them into the grid there. Discharge and repeat. Looks like they are doing that in Japan for offshore wind. Maybe it is too far to be economical though?

You made some good points, especially how unstable the regions and people can be but missed the biggest one. The power loss from high voltage power transmission is not a massive problem, the problem is the production of the cables. There are only a few companies that make them and the current waiting list is years long. The Algerian to Britain and Europe connection that is currently in development to supply solar power decided to make a new factory to produce the cables themselves as the wait list would otherwise be unrealistic. That project will only supply a small percentage of the power used for a small part of Europe, in order to supply all of Europe the amount of cable required would require massive investment in companies just to make more cable. On a side note, Australia is currently building a huge solar farm to supply Singapore, its effectively the same thing just on a slightly smaller scale and done by two very wealthy and stable countries.

Crossing several country’s borders for a single project needlessly complicates matters. Make smaller projects inside a single country, say like Morocco, that will provide it with most if not all the power they need, create many well paying jobs, develop a high tech energy sector and probably even make them an energy export powerhouse. Then once other countries see this, they will do the same and each can be energy independent, control their own grid and increase the standard of living for the citizens

Not really, having a centralized energy producing plant will increase the cost of infrastructure from the place to the rest of the world incredibly. Moreover, creating a large scale solar plant in the Sahara would also mean creating a city where people that maintain the place can live in. With little to no access to infrastructure and water and the Really high temperatures and dryness of the area, I'm not sure how well it would go. Lastly, cross continental power lines would lose a lot of efficiency and would be sunject to natural damages. Imagine all asian electricity suddenly going away because the wrong tree fell on a power line somewhere in Egypt.

I think this video shines light on the possibility that solar will never be the major producer of energy without damaging the environment significantly. The problem was Europe wanted to benefit It's self more from Africa but I'm sure African nations would build It if they want too. It's actually possible in countries like Algeria and Egypt since both of them are getting better in getting put of terrorism with their strong military. And thanks to China's interest in anything related to Africa, with their money and experience it can possible. If that energy could be spread out to African nation both in and near Sahara desert it would change more than half of African nations economy. They can literally stop using fossil fuel unless for air travel and start a lot of investments. And the rest can be sold to middle east countries like Saudi and Israel through Egypt.

There have been been big solar projects fail in the US too, but shouldn’t throw out the baby with the bath water. Having products pushed on market over-hyped or with ridiculous limitations (like early cars, or early slow and expensive early home computers) is nothing new…happens all the time, but then they usually get better, cheaper and more efficient with time and trial. There may just be inherent limits on solar, but my guess is that just 20 years too soon.

They should pump sea water to Sahara and use the electricity to break the water to hydrogen. Hydrogen can then be pumped to Europe by gas pipeline. If energy is pumped as hydrogen, there will be no that bad transmission line losses.

This is very good idea for long term future when the oil and natural gas starts depleting. For project like this to happen, various governments must join hands and start building infrastructure relating to power storage, transmission slowly and steadily so that when oil and natural gas finally in the stage of depletion, then these will start working.

The key point here is true: Getting the power from Africa to Europe would be difficult due to the extreme length of it. Plus to my own thinking such a power cable would make a tempting target for terrorists and hackers;. As in a bomb in Africa would be capable of blacking out much of Europe. Along with the prohibitive cost of making the nessesary power cable to begin with.

That is, without adding in possible terrorists trying to kill them along the way.

Well if Europe and Britain were not plundering Africa already 500 years, probably they would not meet people and nations who are hostile to them. Pay the fair price and the issues can be solved with benefit for everybody including the *environment* that you seem to be so concerned about. The problem is that if you pay the fair price there will be little room for your *profit margin*. By the way USSR was vastly better at constructing their electrical network, which is more resilient, robust,diversified precisely because they didn't have *profit margin* in mind but creating the bare necessity for modern civilization,which is access to energy. Since the collapse of the USSR and the *market economy* reforms in the former Soviet block, a lot of countries are now struggling because they're competing for resources and plan energy plants on capitalist terms. Whatever you think might be the solution for humanity's growing need of energy, the *profit margin* has to exit the equation.
@Jake12220
@Jake12220 2 года назад
Yep and this sort of thinking is why the average wage in Russia is around one tenth the average wage in America... Capitalism has been incredibly good for the standard of living in countries where its been allowed to work properly, places like Russia it never has because of the level pf government intervention and control and both Europe and the USA are heading down that path pf excessive control which is why countries like China and India will fly past the rest of the world in terms of economic development. While they do still have a lot of government control, they don't try to hinder competition and strongly support businesses to grow without toxic levels of regulations. As for European countries ripping off Africa, its a myth. European countries made a fortune from India and Asia, but the African colonies all lost money for the respective governments and even today the European countries that didn't have African colonies generally have higher average incomes. It would be interesting to know how Africa would have developed without European intervention, its impossible to know the exact path, but based in history they would either still be extremely primitive in some regions or have fought incredibly bloody wars in others. As much as modern people think Europeans set africans back, if you know how things were in history then its clear most people are vastly better off now than they would otherwise have been. Just look at the life expectancy and quality of life for the average European a thousand years ago, most Africans were far worse off than that before Europeans arrived.
@bikingcopenhagen4068

@@Jake12220 Well, first of all you're incredibly wrong in your Friedmanian, Randian thinking, I understand where you're coming from, the idea of the *founding fathers* of a *city on a hill* .To tell you this, nothing in the US or any other country in the world hasn't been done without the state and its effort. The fact that US and Britain disguises a lot of things sponsored by the taxpayer as a private entrepreneurship is a whole different story. By the Russia might have much lower income than US but by PPP is ranking higher both from Britain and US. It's not about how much you make but what you can buy. Furthermore Russia has not gotten rich from killing twenty million natives and grabbing their land and then importing ten million Africans to use as slaves. And lastly, the whole world is occupied by the worthless currency of the US that they can print as much as they want because oil and gold are traded in it, essentially it is an instrument of exporting the US's debt and inflation all around the world. The US economy is vastly overvalued and bloated but the rating agencies are American, so there you go. US is completely bankrupt with up to 2000% debt on GDP (MSNBC was the source). and this is exactly the kind of outcome you get with deregulation,Raegonomics etc. bullshit, that has made it possible for large corporations and hedgefunds to avoid paying taxes and put the money in tax havens. Not to mention that large part of why America became a major economic player in the world is because of the outcomes of the WWII, war in which US has made possible the militarization and technological upgrade of the Nazi armies and has supported the German war effort all through the war, with obvious reasons-to kill competition a.k.a. destroy Russia. If you were so much into competition you wouldn't have made Huawei products illegal and made your companies not sell them chips, neither would you have had their CEO's daughter arrested with no charges extrateritorially to act as a leverage on the company and the Chinese government. So there you go.

Bottom line.. Solar and wind energy are not realistic for world wide power supply. Just not practical in any sense.

I find it absolutely stupid that someone can say there is no demand in Africa. True, the African market might not really look appealing to those profit minded mongers, but there surely is demand for cleaner energy sources on the continent. The comment is a myopic submission and a result of stereotypical judgement.

Just unbelievable. Even though the Sahara desert is located in Africa, there is no discussion about how solar farms in the Sahara desert would benefit African countries, many of which suffer from chronic power outages. Its only about how it would benefit Europe and The US. 😂

Should we build more solar farms in the Sahara.... or anywhere else? Absolutely not we should be building nuclear.

Good short documentary/commentary. Why not emphasise on nuclear energy like Finland? It's safe, proven to be effective and even the 'resting place' for the used nuclear material has been solved - that will last over the next ice age - in Finland.

At least tell me the energy is cheap there otherwise these cckscking shareholders ALWAYS need more money to make profits therefore we'll always be in this cycle of profitability over cheap clean energy.

I could see China funding something like this (though probably not for supplying Europe) in the near future. They've been heavily investing in infrastructure in developing African countries over the last few years.

I think investing in this megaproject will be far better rather than wasting money on searching for an exoplanet bla bla lightyears away. How will it benefit me and you is nasa funds a plant 100light years away. Rather than spending trillions of dollars money on space expeditions we should focus more on making earth more habitable

Or you could just build nuclear plants. Cheaper, more reliable, and better for the environment.

@@henryjohnson-ville3834 -20 degrees celcius in the summer. I do not think you would put ice in the mouth if you ever go there. It is the driest place on earty since all water freezes. It can't be any moist except next to the sea. But I'm talking about inland. In Sahara it can rain, in arctic places it snows. If you are putting ice in your mouth you are personally changing the circumstanses. In that case there are more people bringing in waterbottles into Sahara. In Antarctica there are almost no people at all. Do you have anything more unwise to say? Instead of trying to argue in a lost case, why not just Google the driest place on earth. Perhaps you learn something?
