The inspiration for this episode comes from a walk with my dogs. My puppy, This!, was on leash, and my adult dogs were milling about freely. All of a sudden, a large bunny crossed our path 5 meters ahead. My adult dogs did not really notice the rabbit as it was the equivalent of white noise for them. For my puppy, it was a LOUD noise, a siren, she for sure noticed! Is it that my puppy just does not get my training, or is it that she has just started her education?

Thank you, Susan. I want you to know how much these podcasts help me. Even though we are going through all the Recallers games and watching as many of your other videos as possible, I still get reminded of little bits of information every time I watch one of your podcasts. I can watch a video five times and every single time pick up a new tidbit or reminder. They are very helpful and I appreciate all the work and effort that goes into producing one of these. Lol! I love the bunny example. We had two experiences this week that threw my dog off. First a large rabbit came toward her instead of running away. To the point where I was getting concerned about the rabbit's intentions. Then this morning it was a possum in a quite surprising place, skirting around us but with no fear. My dog stopped politely and stared like "What kind of critter are you?"

I get frustrated when my puppy does something she actually knows I don't want her to do. It really does seem like she is blowing me off. But thanks to my 2 years in recallers I know she is not stupid, she is actually showing me how brilliant she really is! She is testing the boundaries of what she is taught, she’s using her outside the box thinking to realize there are ways to get around things even if I attempted to manage the environment and built lots of value for what I want. And the beauty of your methods, Susan is that we can transfer the value of anything our dogs find reinforcing into us and the work we need them to do!

Love this and especially number 5 of balance of success and challenge, and the difference between shaping and luring. Using the example of the use of a GPS verse being given instructions is brilliant.

This. Is. Perfect. 💜 Those layers are proving paramount in teaching my pup. I had to dial back some of her activities since her eye surgery and before that, she was developing an awesome recall w/distraction. Today, she was more interested in her cat friend and watching a few ducks outside her fence make a bunch of noise, than she was coming when called which tells me I've slacked somewhere in developing "my" worth. But, thanks to you and your online classes I know I can get it right again. 👍 Thank you for making hstd and recallers easy and fun!

Love the video! My pup doesn't really like to walk , or go outside, esp in the rain or snow . I'm trying to accomplish getting her to look forward to walking and/or just teaching her to poop right on the porch cuz it beats on the puppy pads or my rug. Any resources on stuff like this?! Keep up the great work!

Loved the podcast. Points 1, 2 and 5 checked off. Recallers, H360, Agility Nation, HSTD and Wag Nation. Point 3. Making a training plan so we progress in our layers and games and get out of the rut I’ve been in. Point 4. I have ditched a training club that was toxic to our training. Back on the right track now 😊❤️

Love your podcasts and learn something new with each one. Unrelated question - when you released your puppy from crate near end of podcast did you say “free”? In an earlier podcast you had said you changed from “free” (sounds like three) to the word “break”. I am just wondering if you have a different release word for the crate vs other behaviors or agility . . . I have “free” but going to change it. Just wondering if there might a reason to use 2 release words. One for ok you can leave your hot spot if you want and another release word for truly wanting your dog to release.

This makes so much sense to me, I'm working with my pup that was returned to the breeder. And I'm the second owner, I'm having to go back to basics with some training. And other bits she is excellent at. Now to re draw the training schedule

Good for you, properly training this pup. I wouldnt be too concerned about being the second owner. It just means someone wasnt as ready to handle a dog as they thought they were. Puppies are cuteness overload, but they are a LOT of work.

I just subscribed after watching 5 games for puppies. I love how passionate you are with teaching. I understand the levels you are talking about, but what i don't understand is how not to use the: uh-uh and leave-it -these are the words taught at the training classes (petsmarts etc). you can't always cover the item (as you previously mentioned) for example. I am planning on adopting a sighthound (Whippet) and I don't know that a bunny would cross it's path without chasing and as i am typing this you mentioned the Saluki!! LOL I look forward to learning more from you. Thank you so much for a great video

Excellent as always and totally agree. Sometimes we humans jump ahead to fast . Example when first got Gemma she would try escaping our fenced back yard so went back to basics in Recallers and boom no more escaping. So I know if do and show the right way they will get it. I also believe all animals can excell if you just give them a chance and trying to show my hubby this for he isn't convinced with Gemma but I am. ❤❤❤❤❤⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hey Susan . . . so where to start? There are so many resources mentioned and so many lower building blocks that need to be in place before other great training tips are tried . . . It’s super exciting, but overwhelming. Where do I begin? Where’s step one for puppies? (this has got to be the 20th video I’ve binged since discovering you a couple days ago) but so much of it is dependent on foundational skills having already been built.

I found this podcast very depressing, not because it’s bad advice, quite the contrary, but because I’m one of those people you mention that finds it hard to progress the layers from what happens at home to what happens in the big wide world. That rabbit would have been game on and had I been attached to the end of the lead I would have gone splat. The trouble is I actually enjoy watching my dog run free, frolic and get the exercise she needs. Her recall is not perfect but she follows and checks in on our near daily bush hikes, which vary fro 3 km (ultra short) to 15 km the dog doing 3x my distance. She totally ignores livestock and we rarely see another person let alone a dog. IYC with food is fine if I’m around, but if I leave the house, no food inadvertently left out will be there when I return. I have not found a way to transition from primary to secondary school! Yes we are Recallers H360, AN but have found a mental block on my part.

I've always hated it when people say "my dog's not too bright" ( or used even worse terms). Any dog can "get it" if you follow a steady progression and these 5 tips. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

Lol. Some dogs do pick up quicker than others. I found a couple dogs in my neighborhood that fit the dim category, but they were surprisingly easy to get good behavior from. Not bright, but willing to please. My super intelligent dog was much harder to get focused and provide enough stimulation to keep her interested. Just keep following the steps....if you have a smart dog, try to keep up. Phew!

Great podcast! I always learn something new. I took my dog out of her dog class because the trainer didn’t know how to work with my aggressive reactive dog. She would just box us in a corner instead of giving me tips to improve her actions. I would love a podcast to help me work with my dog to not be so reactive when she is scared. Thank you!!

I’m just not quite getting how you go from things like IYC or waiting at the door where if dog makes the right choice they get the thing (cookie or to go out) and the things where the choice is ignore the thing you want (bunny) but the reward is not the thing they want. It’s preventing sheep chasing im interested in - there is a video on you tube that says you can not train a dog not to chase sheep using only rewards and shows a leg of lamb being thrown to distract the dog but it doesn’t work. I see Thats kindergarten to uni but if chasing is number one reward won’t a bunny or a sheep always be more fun than a human?

So what your asking is how to go from the dog leaving a treat alone to leaving the sheep alone. Yes you are correct chasing will trump food if it's your dogs all time favorite thing. So you might want to incorporate appropriate chase, like a flirt pole for example. Situations where waiting to be released leads to getting to chase. Then you would focus that chase drive on that thing and thus you would have a permissable chase solution. Over time and practice the dog would increase in impulse control and wait to be released to chase vs just running off. Border collies for example are driven to herd but they will sit till released before begining. They love herding above all else but the only way they get to herd is through permission. Only way your dog gets to chase is through permission. Look at the podcasts for building value, also there is one on permission.
