South Sea pearls are the largest cultured-pearl variety, sometimes reaching over 20 millimeters in diameter. The Pinctada maxima oyster can take up to five years to produce a single South Sea pearl, whereas more common freshwater oysters can take as little as three months and create dozens of pearls. This long cultivation process makes South Sea pearls rarer - and more expensive. A single South Sea pearl can cost $1,500, and a necklace can reach over $200,000. So, how are these pearls grown? And what makes them so expensive?

This is really interesting to me. I work with pearls as a designer but there is a lot that I learned in this video. For example, I didn't realize that pearls could be reshaped and shined like that. And I didn't realize that the nucleus was as big as it is. I wonder if I could learn to shape and buff some of my pearls that have flaws.
@ericolens3
@ericolens3 Год назад
Id say practice with low grade pearls. The thing I'm concerned about is the outer layer being shaven. Is that lacquer or natural oils that give pearls their luster? I bought my neice one of the cheaper pearl necklaces under $100.
@anyascelticcreations
@anyascelticcreations Год назад
@@ericolens3 Yeah, definitely I would try on a low grade pearl first. I always thought that the shine was from an unblemished outer layer of nacre. And that it couldn't be fixed in any way. But theoretically that nacre goes all the way to the nucleus. So theoretically I could polish a scratched or misshapened pearl the same way I polish metal. Though my equipment is different than theirs.
@theecologist10
@theecologist10 Год назад
Dont support this cruel practise. How would you like to be poked and prodding at, purposely hurt to produce a pearl, then go through it again each time.
@theecologist10
@theecologist10 Год назад
Culturing involves surgically opening each oyster shell and inserting an irritant in the oyster. Freshwater pearls are cultured by inserting another oyster’s mantle tissue. Saltwater pearls have beads and another oyster’s mollusk tissue inserted. Fewer than half of the oysters may survive this process. Cultivators further stress the oysters by suspending them in water in a cage, washing their shells, moving them around in different waters, and raising and lowering their cages to subject them to changing water temperatures. After the pearls are extracted from the oysters, one-third of oysters are “recycled” and put through the culturing process again. The others are killed and discarded

I actually prefer wonkier pearls myself. There's something appealing about them to me. Like, a reminder that this is a natural object, a real one of a kind. Also, can't they produce their own nuclei in Indonesia? I assume they're just rounded mussel shell, right? Or, does having the more expensive Japanese nuclei contribute to their appeal for some people? Either way, I can definitely see why these are so expensive.

@@cyantn1634 actually the vast majority of pearls including these are not natural, because they contain a fake core. for the cheapest freshwater pearls, I think they use plastic balls that only get a millimeter or two of nacre coating, and in this case they use mussel shells, which are a similar material to oyster pearls, but still fake filler material and made round and big to give the pearls a big headstart in growing big and round. until a few hundred years ago, all pearls were natural, grown around randomly implanted grains of sand or shell. natural pearls only occur in a small percentage of oysters, fewer per oyster, they take a lot longer to reach the same size because their original core is very small, and they are much less likely to be round due to the lack of a round core as a starting point and the lack of manual turning of the oyster. nowadays, pearls are checked I think with x-rays to show wether they are made of concentric layers of nacre all the way to the center and thus natural, in which case they are far more expensive due to their rarity. plastic cores are certainly easy to identify, whereas these mussel shell cores may be an attempt to fool testing equipment with a similar density to oyster nacre. though I think there probably are ways to identify the lack of concentric layering. but at least the weight of the pearl will be convincing, as opposed to pearls with plastic cores.

The color of a pearl is dependent on the shell inside the oyster (mother of pearl). It has a spectrum of colors where some of them will be on the pearl. So a black pearl will likely come from a species of oyster with many dark hues on the mother of pearl. For example black lipped oyster

western people are very good at talking about environmental damage, monoculture, deforestation for oil palm, especially in developing countries. but they pretend to forget or do not really know how their environment is, many arid lands are not greened. they also do monoculture farming, (perhaps monoculture farming there doesn't need to destroy the forest). and they also pretended to forget who had colonized other countries and caused mischief.
