Oh, great. Thanks to the Kayfabe Effect, it's going to be impossible to find a cheap copy of Amazing Spider-Man # 1 now.

Kirby is indeed credited with the cover pencils. A few months later, Spider-Man guest-starred in the Fantastic Four Annual (with an expanded version of his encounter with the FF) and in the Strange Tales Annual, both stories penciled by Kirby with Ditko inks. In less than a year, Marvel knew they had something special with the character.

Ed: “That may be the greatest costume design in silver age comics maybe.” ... I’d say it’s the greatest costume design ever (as far as superhero tights go) still to this day.

Had the original 33 1/3 LP and comic of this ! Was my brothers before me . The 4 records Golden Records produced came out in 1966 , I was born in 67 , and there are pictures of me as a toddler with headphones on and comic in hand . I STILL have all 4 records , but not , alas , the comics . For those who don't know what I'm talking about , these records came out in the jam of Marvel's Silver Age and were super cool and well done...unlike a lot of later kiddie records . Came with a reprint comic without adds . Avenger #4 . Journey Into Mystery #83(?)(First Thor) . Spider-Man #1 . Fantastic Four #1 . True collector's items that got me into comics for life .

I have the Taschen book and it is absolutely glorious. The paper and overall packaging is great and because they used Hi-res photos the color is perfect. I can’t stand the over saturated colors of most modern reprints, so I was happy to shill out the $200. An interesting thing I noted is that every reprint of this issue I’ve read, they’ve all had edited lettering. The original had all kinds of mistakes- most notably calling Pete “Peter Palmer” on 3 occasions.

Oh, and having the art blown up to 11x17 gives the same effect on the art that you guys mention in the FF video recently. It’s a whole new experience.

Love the bit where he flings himself right across New York, can't recall him ever doing that again. Luckily there were not so many flying super heroes back then (wonder about the pigeons etc in the way though). Brilliant video as ever, loved that Spider-Man 1

Thanks guys. Ok you two really SPUN another Tantalizing Tale of Tarantula-like terror. Yeah, that sentence would've made Stan Lee blush so much he'd get an Awesome Acne Attack. Yes, I'm done, I'll go now....

No comments about him being referred to as “Peter Palmer” in the narration?

In one panel of issue #3, Doctor Octopus called him “Super-Man”.

Yes, the Taschen book is the next best thing to owning the original copies. The feeling, the immersion I have when I read it has nothing to do with reading an omnibus.

They have a Chip Kidd Panel by Panel AF #15 & AS-M #15 with the original inks of AF#15 from the LoC coming out this October.

There's no magic solution to your problems you have to work your way through them. To me that's the legacy of Spider-Man. Keep grinding away, keep chipping away at your problems, don't wait for a magic solution, just get to work and make sure that the Aunt Mays of the world can pay their rent. Because that's really what it's all about. The Aunt Mays of the world. May they always have food and a decent place to live and someone to love them.

As a child of the 80s, I never appreciated Kirby's art or storytelling. As an adult, I can mentally appreciate his contribution and everything he did, and I can understand why he is held in such high esteem, but even now Ditko's Spider-Man remains absolutely readable and enjoyable from the jump in a way that FF #1 absolutely isn't.

Kirby's pencil art is really good, but that guido inker ruined it big time.

You mentioned they've never tried that "delivering a part to the ship" sequence in the films although there is a similar one in Tom Holland's first one, "Homecoming" where he tried to get inside a plane/ship mid flight.

Look for the Chip Kidd Panel by Panel of this and AF#15 this October. Not sure we'll get more after this since the FF PbyP is selling for $18 on Amazon and Target.
