Sir, in the Mauser action, the harder you rack the bolt rearwards, the more forcefully it ejects spent casings. It has no plunger ejector. So if you pull back the bolt too gently, it will not eject positively. Cheers, K.
My thoughts exactly, its a military rifle. When handled as its meant to (a bit faster you know because the targets are shooting back) it ejects just fine.
There is a separate cleaning kit for the M96 that has the cleaning rod extension, jags in both long and short versions, a brush, oil bottle and a bore guide / muzzle protector for cleaning purposes. The fat end of the main cleaning rod is designed to use the short jag inserted into the slot to form a T handle.
Swedish Mausers are awesome old guns. I have one made in 1916. Bought it for $99 in 1985. I like the 6.5x55 cartridge. I bought a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight classic, back in 1992. It is beautifully accurate, my favorite hand load shoots a 140 grain Nosler Partition into 1" groups at 2800 fps. It has taken many Whitetail.

6.6x55 Swedish is an awsome deer cartridge and the Mauser 96 action is strong and smooth. Many years ago I owned a M96 6.x55 that had been sporterized by Kimber Firearms. It was a tack driver. Another one that sadly somehow got away from me over the years. 😢
I have one that was sporterized in the late 50’s early sixties. It’s my absolute favorite rifle and cartridge in my collection. Super accurate and a real pleasure to shoot.

I've got a sporterized version, wish I had the original with the full length barrel. I love that round though, almost no kick and it kills anything it hits here on the East Coast. It's one of the MOST used rounds in Europe for big game hunting as well.
I have one from 1903. I compared it to a new tikka t3. And honestly the m96 feels better. Shoots just as good. Have 3 stage safety, and a 2 stage trigger. And 6,5x55 is great. Also tried tungsten rounds and it zipped through 14 mm thick carbon steel😁👌👍
I was a little surprised by that weak ejection, as I just shot one of these (dated 1903) at my local club here in Sweden, and it tossed the cases out like it was nobodies business :D. But yeah, I never tried pulling the bolt that slow and after reading the other comments I see that is the issue. Real fun gun to shoot regardless. The one at the club has the old competition style diopter iron sights, and we (despite being quite new shooters) could consistently get pretty good groups at 300 meters with very little practice.
There is an extension that that comes with it's cleaning kit and threads onto the rod for it to be long enough to reach the action. 6.5 Creedmore is a Swede with a manbun. :)
Wow. Great video and info. This was my first long rifle i bought at Gun Show in the early 1990's. I use it with open sites with my Dad at a CPM qualifer to be able to puchase M1 Garand for cheap at the time. I was the only one with a bolt action in the group and while shooting on table open sites....hit bulls eyes with one of 5 round increments at 100 yards . Still have rifle and all numbers match from with stamp date 1917. Thank you for the video and trip down memory lane. 👍👍
Most of those rifles came with threaded barrels. You would put a device on the muzzle that shredded wooden bullets when you fired them for training. Mine also came with it and some of the cartridges with wooden bullets.
I have one from 1903 and its a laser beam for what it is. me and 3 guys took it out and just kept hitting small steel targets at 100 and 200 yards. I get that that doesnt sound super exciting but we were mostly novices with the thing and consistently hit the atrget even from the first shot. The sights were dead on and the consistency was great, had a blast. We also had a mosin that couldnt hit rain in a hurricane and a 30-06 that was decent, but kicked so much harder. Everyone loved the M96
I also have a Swedish Mauser made in 1900. It was designed as a battle rifle so the bolt likes to be ran hard. Thats why you had problem with ejection when you were running it softly. The disk on the stock will tell you about the condition of the bore and hold over for zero( Overslag ) = over shooting. The swedes were very meticulous with this. Also since they were not used in combat because the Swedes remained neutral in the both world wars you can find most of the rifles in great condition. You can look up how to translate the disc on the stock for specifics on the rifle.
furthermore discs were/are on all reworked/inspected rifles any rifle deemed failing was distrroyed even rifles classified as 3's (the lowest) by the sweedes looks pristine, their standards for keeping only top servicable rifes was very high.
A classic. .. very accurate guns with suprisingly good ballistics for it's age they can take any game animal in north America .. it's where the 6.5 creedmore concept started .. btw. The 30 40 krag is another excellent vintage bolt rifle
@@davegeisler7802 because they were made so long ago. Each rifle is a law unto itself. A d condition of bore matters also . Krag rifles are banned from certain competitions such as the Palma match ..due to their extreme accuracy. If you want a vintage rifle that can really shoot. A 96/11 k11 or k 31 Schmidt Rubin from Switzerland are excellent choices for high accuracy
@@agoogleaccount2861 with all due respect my 1898 Krag has a pristine bore. The problem is the 30 Army round can’t compete with the 6.5x55 with that rounds excellent bullet coefficientcy and btw my K31 is a shooter also almost as good as my Swedish Mauser , almost !
@@davegeisler7802 that's interesting. I've never seen a swedish Mauser out perform a k 31 with the proper ammo . it's like comparing a passenger car to a muscle car are you shooting GP11 or some kind of mediocre consoomer ammunition from the k 31 ?
Takes me back to early 2000's.. there is a gun shop in my town that had twenty or more of these. They were all $99 out the door! Of course being twenty years younger and raising children I passed! Once the Creedmoor hit the scene.. the price quadrupled! Now.. you're lucky if you see one on the rack! He also had Mosin Nagants Lee Enfield's and many others! Back in Oct he goes into a shop here in Pennsylvania and they had three of them! Needless to say he finally got one :) Myself.. I bought an 1899 make about a decade ago with an extra stock for 125.00. I cut down, refinished and bedded the extra stock for hunting. I kept the barrel length intact but bought an M38 turned down bolt body...which luckily headspaced correctly...and put a no tap scope mount on it. Best money I ever spent!
the best CG mauser i will say is M98 better bolt, bigger rifle nut, 6.5x55SE is laughing at 6.5 Creedmore its typical america to try to copy ammo from europe and fail to get it good like EU build calibers
You need more force to move the bolt action because the hammer is big and needs to be moved. Check the bolt before and after the action, you will see. it! Theoretically you could let the hammer break on a piece of cloth or leather and load 6 rounds safely... Really liked your video 👍

Got a 1905 that was in pristine condition before it was sporterized. To give it back some dignity, tonight I mounted a new Arken SH4 4-12x50 scope on a new 20 MOA pic rail. The previous owner has past. He was a serious dealer who bought and sold hundreds of M96's. He said this one had the best barrel he had seen, so he kept it. With a 2 pound trigger it is 1/4 MOA with H4350. The barrel is a zero bore, like new. The remaining wood is pristine as well. These beauties are still out there. You can get lucky like I did. I acquired this rifle in 2000 and it's been my go to deer/hog rifle ever since. Soft recoil, deadly accurate (1/2" groups at 100yds with a Pentax 4.5-14x42 scope).
Yes. 6.5x55 Swedes are accurate weapons. I have used for years with mainly 140 grain reloads. Rifles equipped with 2.5X scopes which are all that is needed for max ranges in these mountains. My two primary weapons have lighter pull commercial triggers. Both will give sub 1" groups at 100 yards. I have modified them only by retaining original stocks and coating them with rust resistant finishes. Reloading at moderate loads means they will continue to be effective game getters. Good rifle design, keep it simple.
my 1942 96 shoots half moa with a scope at 100 metres, with the original barrel. Good rifle and has harvested moose, elk, deer and coyotes. I have too many of these in my collection, all are very accurate rifles.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Gustav m96. I have taken many deer and hog with it. Very accurate and flat. Incredible wound channel and damage with the Hornaday sst. I have used the Lapua with really good success and expansion. My Gustav Swede is my goto hunting rifle. Unless I'm in the brush. Then it's my 45-70.
I have recently finished a custom build of one of these, using a Boyd's "At-1" chassis, pillar and glass bedding, free floating barrel, bolt bent. drilled and tapped for scope. I left the barrel at original long length for a hopeful increase in speed at long ranges. I have loaded many different powders at various weights for critique to find the best load for 140 gr. bullet. Now that cooler weather is coming, very anxious to check my latest home made creation at the range, and compare to my also recent build of a 30-06 Mauser 98 conversion to 7mm-08, with same build procedures, except a hand made, thumb-hole wood stock. I have had this very small use, surplus rifle sitting around for many years, and decided to put it to use. My original sot many years ago was $89 from Davidsons. I figure to have about $400 invested, including scope and stock in it for components; my labor is "free to me"-LOL.
You better go back and look at what you paid for everything, pretty sure you'll find you paid double or triple of what your saying , Boyd's stocks start at around $300. So apparently you, bought a stock, used the original barrel, kept the original trigger, & safety which means you need a special extra tall scope mount, + accraglass unless you already had it , or maybe you got a 3 position Winchester style safety, they're only around $300. + you need a milling machine and experience to install it , even if you got the gun for free + $400. It would still cost an additional $400. Minimum
Thank you for your opinionated reply, ericshulze5641. Should you check the Boyd's website, you will notice that even now (07/24) the AT1 stocks start @ $249 and I purchased mine on a sale to boot. I am a life long trade schooled, college educated machinist, 33 year owner of shop, now retired with current possession of a milling machine, lathe, welding equipment multiple types and the rarity of a brain now a days. I fabricate all my pillars, perform my own precision bedding, free floating, along with modifications of improvement over factory designs when possible. Should the picture I posted have been better, you would have noticed the window milled from the rear scope mount for ease of viewing the numbers of adjustment-my bad. The safety & trigger work just fine for this budget build, that surprises many of the fancy "Creedmoor" shooters at the range. Along with those factors, cast & powder coat my own bullets for pistol & rifle. I paid $79 for my Swedish years ago from Davidson's Supply when I had my FFLs. My builds are for myself, not with intentions of impressing or future high price sales to others. Nothing fancy here, works better than most though.
I have an M96, M38 and M/94-14, the M38 was my first rifle and made me fall in love with 6.5x55. Swedish mausers are my favorite mausers, at matches the cock on close action with how smooth these are and the soft recoil with the ballistics make them really popular. The M38’s my favorite deer rifle and I’m saving to get an M41b and AG42 eventually
The Swede Mauser can shoot accurately. The Long M96, short and handy M38 are more common. If you can, the M42 semiauto is a treat. They made a sniper variant M41B with a scope. I learned to shoot on a worn M38 ....but is still shot great.

Thanks for the nice video. Hint: Do not close the left eye when shooting if it is certain that the right eye is the dominant eye. Then the results will be even better.
Yes they are very good, but many people are losing deer in the woods, after shooting them with 6.5 bullets. They simply do not leave a good blood trail , like a 308, 30 06, 270 ect. BUT... I Have discovered one factory bullet that does. Its the PPU 139 GRN SOFT POINT. You get the widest expansion, I have seen in a cup and core bullet. I never tried Hornady 165 grn Round Nose bullets, maby they would leave a good Blood Trail. Ultimately we all Like " Boom downs" a.k.a. DRT.

Bought one in 1980, at a gun show for $75, to use for coyote and fox hunting "dog gun". Put a 4x scope and was smoking them at 500yds. Still have the old rifle and have wondered now for years about the creedmore craze?
Man I have two of them. One was a military rifle team rifle. Has the target globe front sight and the rear is a peep adjustable for windage and elevation. Curley wood . It is beautiful. The other I put a turned down bolt handle . Removed the clip hump . Machined the front sight off putting a Pope crown on. Removed the rear sight drilled and taped for scope. Replaced the military stock . It is a shooter. And has killed deer.
I have a 1901 with a great barrel. I enjoy it. I need to replace the front sight blade I think to a taller blade to get the sighting down at 100yard range zero.
