I know a teacher who taught a class about real world math like taxes, pay checks, and budgeting. His complaint was the kids who succeeded would have figured it out themselves and those who needed it didn't pay attention.
It wouldn’t be that difficult of a class, so I imagine that some kids would dismiss what they’re being taught as common sense and ignore it because they can just work it out later. The whole point of education is that you can do the basic things life asks of you by applying the skills you’ve learned elsewhere- like reading and basic math. The other problem is that if the tax system is so batshit that it requires a class to understand, then maybe the system needs to change.
There was a waifu game for filing your taxes in 2023 called Tax Heaven 3000. It was a dating simulator and your date would ask you questions that the program would use to file your taxes.

@@Sean.R the point is we need better curriculum for finances. Here in Canada we just have the one class, planning 10, which covers a bunch of these things, but very generally and it's a short class covering very broad subjects. Things like finances and how to use internet should have curriculum updated to actually be useful to people. When I was a kid they just taught us power point and Microsoft word. Oh and one simple excel spread sheet lol. That's it. All things you can figure out through just using the software. And mind these are expensive programs that make things easy. They should be teaching us things that are more accessible and more high skill so there's actually some meat to what they're teaching. Curriculum I'm general needs and update but especially in these areas with how much more important it's become for the average person to understand these things
Learning about supply and demand, micro and macro economics and whatever else they teach in school (i only picked up finance in uni so no clue what is actually taught in school) should be so far below learning how to file your taxes properly in priority its not even funny. Id say most people live their entire lives not needing to know about how economic systems and structures were designed and why they run the way they do. Every single person needs to pay taxes, you quite literally can go to prison if you don't. Kids dont pay attention in sex-ed and first-aid classes, that isn't a reason to not run the class. The few that are interested get the information, a few people that never thought about it but take it seriously get the information, and the few dropkicks that dont listen are only really affecting themselves so who cares as long as its still beneficial for the students that give a shit its also crazy how we will talk about interest rates, and percentiles in maths class, but I dont remember it ever actually being put into proper terms. We did ridiculous calculus/integration/proofs/3D vectors, but they didnt have time to run us through a couple examples of buying a brand new car with debt at 18% interest rates vs a used car with 5% over 5 years? I know its something you can work out yourself, but people are surprisingly bad at applying things they have learnt to real world applications.

Am I crazy? I feel like taxes are easy for the overwhelming majority of people. If your only source of income is a W-2, it’s incredibly easy. Investments / trading complicates it a bit, but not much. Unless you are like, a business owner or self employed, taxes should not require a semester of schooling to learn. The harder part would be knowing what deductibles and credits you apply for, which tax filing software will usually ask you about anyways
They 100% are. I did my taxes at 16 to get like a $50 refund from working at Chipotle, they’re unbelievably easy. Even now with 2 W-2s, stuff from a ROTH and a brokerage account, they took me like an hour
Just graduated and my econ teacher did actually have a whole unit at the end of the year where we went through everything. How to sign up for insurance, how to calculate taxes, what we should do to save for retirement, what to look for in a place to live or a car to buy. Was actually incredibly helpful. Lasted a month and was our final project. Was very easy the way he set it up so not only was it helpful but it was a good weight lifted off the final frenzy at the end of the year.
I was literally just trying to remember that exact same book series the other day. I remember staying up until 2 a.m. reading through them with a friend of mine. I was enthralled with that series as a teen!
Lemme tell ya, I had an Econ class where we learned tax stuff in high school and it was boring af and immediately forgotten once I was out of school. That stuff is not sticking in your head unless it actively applies to you and you are actively using it, a class during college would be much more helpful or just like a khan academy series of videos to watch during your first time
Not going to lie, I think teaching people how to read better would fix the problem too. The language is confusing if you skim it, if you actually sit down and read everything and follow the directions, it’s pretty easy. Especially with online tools

In my school we have a consumer economics class which is a graduation requirement. In this class we learn about saving for retirement, investing, basic economic principles, budgeting, taxes, insurance, etc.
I just graduated high school and in our civics class we learned about different types of tax forms and how to fill out what you need, as well as insurance and HMOs. My district was really good so I know I was the exception but it is being taught some olaces
I was required to take a personal finance course online over the summer between junior and senior year. 3 week course I didn’t get my log in information until week 3 so I essentially have 1 week experience on a class that’s supposed to be a semester long and arguably one of the most important things to learn in school.
it's always funny to see people argue how we should be teaching taxes and "practical" knowledge in school, but fail to realize that no sane teenager would pay attention to it.
No sane teenager would pay attention to learning about the organelles in a cell, or about how to find the missing angle in an obtuse triangle, or what every single country on earth is. The issue is that most teenagers in school don't pay attention to the classes BECAUSE the classes aren't teaching them anything that they will realistically need to know unless they are planning to go into a hyper specific job field, and even then teenagers aren't going to know what job field they want to go into yet because school doesn't actually teach them about said job fields. Schools give teens a bunch of info without the context behind what that info will be used for within the real world. They aren't told or taught why they need this info or when they will need to use it, which leads to them being disinterested. But teaching them stuff that they KNOW they will need in life? Teens know what taxes are and why they should be taught how to do them. Teens know that they will eventually probably want to take out a loan to buy a house or car, and would probably appreciate being taught how to do that. The most important thing about teaching something to someone, is ensuring they know why they need to know what you are teaching them, and when and where that info will be useful
My Senior year math teacher spent the last week of school teaching us how to do taxes and how to make sure your job isnt abusing you, the best teacher I've ever had!
Damn, I can't believe Atrioc called out The Seventh Tower series, my favorite books in middle school. I never did finish them, and when I tried again as an adult, the reading level was way too basic. I remember really loving them though. That might have been little kid brain, but maybe I should give it another shot.

Schools across america offer these classes. I took it freshman year of high school, it was called Personal Finance. The issue is the people who are gonna need that class don’t want to take a finance class in high school, so they just complain

If you ever see this Atrioc it's not young adult but I really think you'd LOVE the book The Walking Drum by Louis L'Amour or the Lord of Isles series by David Drake. Just in case you see this and want something to read. Same goes to anyone else reading this -- both are great series! In the top of my favorite books and I've read thousands of books.

If you are self-employed, run a business or even have a side hustle that makes over a certain (low) amount of money annually then you need to do your own taxes (Or pay someone else to) in the UK too. Obviously the US should move to a system where employers file taxes for employees, but the govt doesn't do anyone's taxes anywhere lol.

Depends on the school, remember, there are schools out there that don’t even get art or music classes because they’re doing so bad financially. But I went to high school in Maryland and I was required to take a financial literacy class to graduate (though I didn’t technically get to finish mine because the pandemic said “haha you thought you were going to get a Junior Spring and Senior Year? LOL”)

I had a career class as a senior where we had to pick out pragmatic careers. From how much it’s cost to go to certain schools and how much you will actually earn after taxes and to budget with that in mind. Half the class was like damn only 10 college careers here actually make enough for me to buy a house before 40. I liked the way my hs approached college unless you have a passion for something don’t feel pressured to go and waste your money. If you just want to provide for your family go get a trade. A lot of people went trade or military
Teaching "life lessons" at school would be a waste of time as most individuals will learn how to do those things because society mandates it. School provides a unique oppurtunity to learn things that aren't mandated by society. Physics, Chemistry, Biology or History isn't required knowledge to hold down a job and house so we owe it to our children to teach them things that help them appreciate the world around them and what has come before.
Im not sure if this is it but i think ur tbinking of the black prism bok series. But in that book they all had magical abilities (well some did) that would cause them to be injured over time or go crazy and it was based off of the color spectrum

For everyone wondering how bezo’s and other rich guys don’t pay taxes. Basically they will buy stock (usually of their own company) and then they will take a loan out again that stock. So say they have 50k in stocks, they will take a 50k loan out against it to use on the daily. Then bezo’s will have Amazon pay him like 1$ a year. Thus he “technically” didn’t make anything besides the 1$ so he is in the lowest tax bracket and only pays taxes on that 1$. Whereas normal people have to pay income tax which is stupid high. Also interestingly, capital gains are taxed lower than income tax. So even if he did sell those stocks he would still pay less in taxes than what you made even if it’s the same amount. *You don’t pay taxes on stock unless you sell it.* There’s other loopholes too but this is the biggest one I’ve seen

Your job might not need you to know this, but unless you want your doctors to be 50 years old by the time they graduate from med school because they didnt know what a jaw bone was when they entered med school, dont expect the school not to cater to degrees and fields which require knowledge. You can't expect it to be "You go to this school which is just biology and you become a doctor, and you go to this school and study physics for engineering". Everyone needs to have a general knowledge of every subject before they decide their careers.

Not that long ago, I would have agreed with you, but my opinion on the school system has completely changed in recent years. I genuinely believe that schooling is one of the few genuine and well-meaning institutions in the world. As a student, I think we often lack the experience and perspective to fully appreciate this.

My high school had a required Financial Literacy class for all freshmen where they covered taxes, budgeting, writing checks, and all that jazz. Surprise! Nobody paid attention. I played I Wanna Be The Guy on the lab PCs. Horses and water. Kids said "I'll worry about this later" and now complain on Facebook that they weren't taught it. I can't say whether the class was worth it for exposing these topics to kids, but I can say that most kids treated it like every other class where the material was only retained until the day of the final.
